Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees! Today we will continue with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book, Today's chapter is entitled as:

Phalaśruti- The Result of Hearing About the Pastime of Blasphemer of Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita Being Punished with Leprosy and Delivered
Under the Section: The Lord’s Attempt to Go to Vṛndāvana

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.368

aparādhīra anuśocanā o prabhura śaraṇa-grahaṇa—
sei kuṣṭha-rogīśuni' prabhura uttara
dante tṛṇa kari' bale haiyā kātara

Jayapatākā Swami: When the leper heard Lord Caitanya's reply, he took straw between his teeth and spoke with great humility.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.369

“kichu nā jāniluṅ muñi āpanā' khāiyā
vaiṣṇavera nindā kailuṅ pramatta haiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: “I did not know anything. Out of madness I ruined myself by blaspheming a Vaiṣṇava.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhāta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: The leper said, “Out of madness I have blasphemed a Vaiṣṇava without understanding his glories. I have already suffered the punishment that was destined for my offense. You alone know the atonement for my offense. ” In reply, the Lord said, “ This ordinary suffering is just the beginning. Unlimited further suffering is given by Yamarāja to the blasphemer of a Vaiṣṇava. Yamarāja awards eighty-four thousand varieties of punishment. An offense is nullified only when the person who was offended forgives the offender just as a thorn is taken out from where it entered by the help of another thorn.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.370

ataeva tāra śāsti pāiluṅ ucita
ekhane īśvara tumi-cinta mora hita

Jayapatākā Swami: “Therefore I have received appropriate punishment. O Supreme Lord, please, now think about my welfare.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.371

sādhura svabhāva-dharma—duḥkhīre uddhāre
kṛta-aparādhīre o sādhu kṛpā kare

Jayapatākā Swami: “It is the natural duty of a saintly person to deliver the distressed. Saintly persons display mercy even on the offenders.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.372

eteke tomāre muñi lainu śaraṇa
tumi upekṣile uddhāribe kon jana?

Jayapatākā Swami: “Therefore I take shelter of You. If You neglect me, who will deliver me?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.373

yāhāra ye prāyaścitta-saba tumi jñātā
prāyaścitta bala' more—tumi sarva-pitā

Jayapatākā Swami: ““You know the proper atonement for everyone, and You are the father of all. Please therefore tell me what is my atonement. So, the leper is asking Lord Caitanya, how he can be forgiven for his offense, this is known as atonement. He is trying to find out what is the proper atonement.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.374

vaiṣṇava-janera yena nindana kari
luṅucita tāhāra ei śāsti ye pāiluṅ”

Jayapatākā Swami: “I have committed an offense to a Vaiṣṇava and whatever punishment I have already received is certainly suitable.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.375

prabhu kartṛka vaiṣṇava-nindakera śāstira gurutva kathana
prabhu bale,—“vaiṣṇava nindaye yei jana
kuṣṭha-roga kon tāra śāstiye likhana

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya said, “Leprosy is insignificant compared to the other punishments for a person who blasphemes a Vaiṣṇava.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.376

āpātataḥśāsti kichu haiyāche mātra
āra kata āche yama-yātanāra pātra

Jayapatākā Swami: You have received only a temporary punishment. There is more to come, for you are fit to be punished by Yamarāja. So, the warning is given by Lord Caitanya, that the punishment for offending or blaspheming a Vaiṣṇava is very great.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.377

caurāśi-sahasra yama-yātanā pratyakṣe
punaḥ punaḥ kari bhuñje vaiṣṇava-nindake

Jayapatākā Swami: A blasphemer of a Vaiṣṇava suffers again and again eighty-four thousand punishments awarded by Yamarāja.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.378

prabhura vaiṣṇavāparādha-mocanera ekamātra upāya kathana—
cala kuṣṭha-rogi, tumi śrīvāsera sthāne
satvare paḍaya giyā tāṅhāra caraṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: “O leper, go and quickly and take shelter at the feet of Śrīvāsa Prabhu.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.379

tāṅra ṭhāñi tumi kariyācha aparādha
niṣkṛti tomāra tiṅho karile prasāda

Jayapatākā Swami: “Since you have committed an offense against Śrīvāsa Prabhu, you will be relieved when he forgives you.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.380

kāṅṭā phuṭe yei mukhe, se-i mukhe yāya
pāye kāṅṭā phuṭile ki skandhe bāhirāya?

Jayapatākā Swami: “When a thorn enters the body, it must come out from the same place. If a thorn gets stuck in the foot, can it be taken out of the shoulder?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.381

ei kahilāṅa tora nistāra-upāya
śrīvāsa-paṇḍita kṣamile se duḥkha yāya

Jayapatākā Swami: “I have told you the means for your deliverance. If Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita forgives you, you will be relieved of your suffering. When He, Srivasa Pandita, was asked, because of you, you want someone to suffer, “No, No! I don’t want anyone to suffer because of me”, “then you should forgive this leper!”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.382

mahā-śuddha-buddhi tiṅho tāṅra ṭhāñi gele
kṣamibena saba tore, nistāriba hele”

Jayapatākā Swami: “His intelligence is most pure. If you approach him, he will easily forgive your offense and deliver you.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.383

śuniyā prabhura ati susatya vacana
mahā-jaya-jaya-dhvani kailā bhakta-gaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: After hearing Lord Caitanya's most truthful statements, the devotees all loudly chanted, “Jaya! Jaya! Hari Bol! Hari Bol!”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.384

śrīvāsera nikaṭa kṛta-aparādhera kṣamā-bhikṣā o śrīvāsera prasāda-phale aparādhīra niṣkṛti—
sei kuṣṭha-rogīśuni' prabhura vacana
daṇḍavata haiyā calilā tata-kṣaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: After hearing the Lord Caitanya's instructions, the leper offered prostrate obeisances and immediately left.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.385

sei kuṣṭha-rogī pāi' śrīvāsa-prasāda
mukta haila-khaṇḍila sakala aparādha

Jayapatākā Swami: Thereafter that leper received the mercy of Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita. He was thus delivered from his suffering as his offenses were destroyed. Caitanya-caritāmṛta tells this story as Capala-Gopāla that he offended Śrīvās Ṭhākura. Somehow here it doesn’t mention the name of the leper, otherwise the details are not different.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.386

mahāprabhura svayaṃ vaiṣṇava-nindāra anartha-kathana—
yateka anartha haya vaiṣṇava-nindāya
āpane kahilā ei śrī-vaikuṇṭha-rāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya, the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha thus personally explained the havoc that is created by blaspheming a Vaiṣṇava.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.387

tathāpiha vaiṣṇavere ninde yei jana
tāṅra śāstā āche śrī-caitanya-nārāyaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: If anyone still blasphemes a Vaiṣṇava, he will be punished by the Supreme Lord, Śrī Caitanya Nārāyaṇa.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.388

vaiṣṇavera paraspara kondala o āpātamatānaikya-darśane ekapakṣa grahaṇapūrvaka aparapakṣera nindā vināśera hetu —
vaiṣṇave vaiṣṇave ye dekhaha gālāgāli
paramārthe nahe, ithe kṛṣṇa kutūhalī

Jayapatākā Swami: (The author says that) The bickering between One Vaiṣṇava and another Vaiṣṇava, does not destroy their spiritual life; Since Lord Kṛṣṇa is delighted in this sportive spirit (which He Himself creates). So, sometimes Vaiṣṇavas disagree on some details and they have a discussion on that matter, the fact that bickering is not punished but one should be careful that not to unnecessarily blaspheme a Vaiṣṇava.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhāta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: When foolish people see Vaiṣṇavas quarrel, they think that their quarreling is like that of the non-devotees. But this is not the case. Rather, such quarreling increases their love for Kṛṣṇa. The love for Kṛṣṇa that Rukmiṇī and Satyabhāmā amass while competitively reproaching each other is enhanced by such quarreling and competition. Therefore, by creating quarrels and differences of opinion among Vaiṣṇavas, Śrī Caitanyadeva has established the ideal of quarrels in this world.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, we should try to increase our devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa and that is the transcendental quarrel.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.389

satyabhāmā-rukmiṇīye gālāgāli yena
paramārthe eka tānā, dekhi bhinna hena

Jayapatākā Swami: Although Satyabhāmā devī and Rukmiṇī devī abuse each other and appear as opponents, they have a common spiritual goal, though they appear to be different. Their common goal is to please Kṛṣṇa and that is the goal of all the devotees. So if there is a disagreement then that will be what will please Kṛṣṇa more, that’s not an obstacle.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.390

ei mata vaiṣṇave vaiṣṇave bhinna nāi
bhinna karāyena raṅga caitanya-gosāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: Similarly, there are no differences between one Vaiṣṇava and another. Differences are created by Lord Caitanya Gosāi for His pastimes.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.391

ithe yei eka vaiṣṇavera pakṣa haya
anya vaiṣṇavere ninde, se-i yāya kṣaya

Jayapatākā Swami: Therefore, if one takes the side of one Vaiṣṇava and blasphemes another, he is doomed. One should avoid of taking sides in some argument and blaspheming one Vaiṣṇava. The goal is to please Kṛṣṇa, so all those Vaiṣṇavas are auspicious and not worthy of being blasphemed.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.392

vaiṣṇavagaṇa sakalei kṛṣṇera vibhinna aṅga o paraspara abhinna —
eka haste īśvarera sevaye kevala
āra haste duḥkha dile tāra ki kuśala?

Jayapatākā Swami: If one serves the Supreme Lord with one hand and gives Him distress with the other hand, then how can he be benefited?

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhāta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: If one serves the Supreme Lord with one hand and gives Him trouble with the other hand, he can never achieve any auspiciousness. The Lord's devotees are like the limbs of Kṛṣṇa's body. Therefore they never become averse to His service. Śrī Hari, Guru, and Vaiṣṇava are equal in the vision of one who sees all living entities as devotees of the Supreme Lord. Only such a person is qualified to attain liberation from material existence.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.393

ei mata sarva bhakta-kṛṣṇera śarīra
ihā bujhe, ye haya parama mahādhīra

Jayapatākā Swami: One who understands that all devotees are limbs of Kṛṣṇa's body is a most sober person.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.394

abheda-dṛṣṭite kṛṣṇa-vaiṣṇava bhaji
yāye kṛṣṇa-caraṇa seve, se yāya tariyā

Jayapatākā Swami: One who regards Lord Kṛṣṇa and the Vaiṣṇavas as nondifferent while serving the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa is delivered from material existence.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 4.395

ye gāya, ye śune, e sakala puṇya-kathā
vaiṣṇavāparādha tāra nā janme sarvathā

Jayapatākā Swami: One who chants or hears these auspicious topics never commits offenses to the Vaiṣṇavas.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhāta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: By considering that there are differences between the devotees of the Supreme Lord or that the Supreme Lord is not being served by a devotee, one commits vaiṣṇava-aparādha. But there is no possibility of one committing an offense if he realizes that there are no differences between Hari, Guru, and Vaiṣṇava. Such a person can never commit any vaiṣṇava-aparādha.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, if a devotee understands how every Vaiṣṇava is connected to Kṛṣṇa then the idea will not arise in his mind to commit any offense. After hearing all these instructions, one should be very careful not to commit any offenses.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Phalaśruti - The Result of Hearing About the Pastime of Blasphemer of Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita Being Punished with Leprosy and Delivered.
