Viṣṇu-priyā Wants Viśvambhara to Clean Up the Hearsay About Sannyāsa

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.1

barāḍi rāga— dhūlākhelājāta karuṇā-chanda

tabe devī śacīvāṇī, kahe mana-kāhinī
hiyā-duḥkhe virasavadana

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, mother Śacīrāṇī spoke her heart. Her heard was sorrowful. Her face was withered.

mukhe nā niḥsare vāṇī, du-nayane jhure pānī,
dekhi’ viṣṇupriyā acetana

Jayapatākā Swami: No words came from her mouth, and her eyes were profusely streaming tears, seeing this, Viṣṇu-priyā fell unconscious.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.2

sudhāite nāre kathā, antare-marama-bethā,
lokamukhe śuni’ ghanāghunā

Jayapatākā Swami: Viṣṇu-priyā devī could not inquire, about the different talks that she heard from the mouths of people, that people exchanged amongst themselves. She was feeling in her heart, very painful.

iṅgite bujhila kāja, paḍila akāla-rāja,
cetana harila sei dīnā

Jayapatākā Swami: By hints, she understood what was happening. And it was like being hit by an untimely lightning, poor Viṣṇu-priyā fell unconscious.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.3

viṣṇupriyā mane guṇe, prabhu dina-avasāne,
gharere āilā haraṣite

Jayapatākā Swami: Viṣṇu-priyā was contemplating within her heart what to do. At the day’s end, Lord Gaurāṅga cheerfully returned to His home.

kariyā bhojana-pāna, sukhe śayyāya śayāna,
viṣṇupriyā āilā turite

Jayapatākā Swami: After eating His meal and drinking water, He happily laid down on His bed. Viṣṇu-priyā quickly approached Him.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.4

caraṇakamala-pāśe, niḥśvāsa chāḍiyā baise,
nehāraye kātara-vayāna

Jayapatākā Swami: Beside His lotus feet, she sighed and sat down. Her face anxious, she intensely looked at Him.

hṛdaya-upare thuñā, bāndhe bhuja-latā diyā,
priya-prāṇanāthera caraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Wrapping the vines of her arms, around the feet of her dear master of her life, around His lotus feet, she pressed those lotus feet to her heart.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.5

dunayāne bahe nīra, bhijila hiyāra cīra,
caraṇa vāhiyā paḍe dhārā

Jayapatākā Swami: Tears from her two eyes flowed, moistened her cloth, and the streams fell on the Lord’s lotus feet.

cetana pāiyā cite, uṭhe prabhu ācambite,
viṣṇupriyāya puche abhipārā

Jayapatākā Swami: So being made conscious, Lord Gaurāṅga suddenly rose, got up. He asked Viṣṇu-priyā ’s intentions.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.6

mora priyā-priyā tumi, kānda ki kāraṇe jāni,
kaha devi ihāra uttara

Jayapatākā Swami: “You are most dear, most dear to Me. May I know, why do you weep? What is the cause of your weeping? My dear goddess, tell Me.”

khuñā ūru-upara, cibuke dakṣiṇa kara,
puche kichu madhura akṣara

Jayapatākā Swami: He placed her on His thigh, He held her chin with His right hand. With some sweet words, He asked something.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.7

kānde devī viṣṇupriyā, vidariyā yāya hiyā,
puchite nā kahe kichu vāṇī

Jayapatākā Swami: Viṣṇu-priyā devī was crying. Her heart was broken. She could not ask or say anything.

antare gumare prāṇa, dehe nāhi sannidhāna,
nayāne jharaye mātra pānī

Jayapatākā Swami: She was suffering within, unable to speak. She could not think that she could stay in her body, only tears streamed from her eyes.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.8

punaḥ punaḥ puche pahuṁ sumati nā dei tabhu,
kānde mātra caraṇe dhariyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Again and again, Lord Gaurāṅga asked, but Viṣṇu-priyā did not respond. She held on to His lotus feet and only cried.

prabhu saba kalā jāne, puche nānā-vidhāne,
aṅgabāse vayāna muchiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga knows every art, and so He asked in various ways. With His own cloth, He wiped her tears.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.9

nānāraṅga parathāva, kariyā bāḍhāya bhāva,
ye kathāya pāṣāṇa mañjare

Jayapatākā Swami: Speaking how They would happily enjoy many pastimes, in this way, He made the love within her grow. His sweet talks could turn stones into flowers!

prabhura vyagratā dekhi’, viṣṇupriyā candramukhī,
kahe kichu gadagad-svare

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing Lord Gaurāṅga’s anxiety, the moon faced Viṣṇu-priyā spoke some words in a voice choked with emotion.

We see that Lord Caitanya, on one hand, He wants to pacify and please all His devotees. At the same time, He wants to fulfill His mission, which is to spread the Harināma saṅkīrtana all over. So, He wants to deliver all the fallen souls. But people are taking Him as just another gṛhastha. So therefore, He is not able to preach sufficiently, and people are offending Him, which would be very bad for their spiritual advancement. So, He decided to take sannyāsa. So that in that time, He would be respected, by all the students and others. But this is putting the devotees in great anxiety and separation, and then He tried to pacify His mother Śacī. To some extent He pacified her. But still she was very grief stricken. When Viṣṇu-priyā saw her, she knew something is wrong. She heard from people, rumors that Viśvambhara would take sannyāsa. Lord Viśvambhara is very dear to her than her life. So Viśvambhara is speaking with her, and pacifying her. We will see how He can pacify Viṣṇu-priyā. These are very intense pastimes. For the residents of Māyāpur, Navadvīpa, Lord Caitanya, leaving and taking sannyāsa is something unbearable.
