20200824 Viṣṇu-priyā is Pacified by Seeing the Four-handed Form of Viśvambhara.

Introduction: Tonight, we had the Latin American RGB, because we ended late, we had to shift our class. So, we are late in the schedule. So, we will continue with the reading of the Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book. Lord Caitanya is going to take sannyāsa. When His wife Viṣṇu-priyā heard about it, she said, that if I am the obstacle, let me take poison, and You can stay at home. So, Lord Caitanya comforted her with sweet words and embraces, now we will continue the explanation today. The chapter today

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram
hariḥ oṁ tat sat

Viṣṇu-priyā is Pacified by Seeing the Four-handed Form of Viśvambhara.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.26

e bola śuniṣā paṁhu, mucaki hāsiyā lahu,
hāsi kahe śuna mora priyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing these words from Viṣṇu-priyā, Lord Viśvambhara gently smiled and said, with a smiling voice, “Please listen My dear.”

kichu nā kariha cite, ye kahiye tora hite,
sāvadhāne śuna mana diyā

Jayapatākā Swami: “Don’t do anything, or think of, in your heart. What I am about to tell you is for your well-being, carefully listen, give your mind and concentration.”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.27

jagate yateka dekha, michā kari’ saba lekha,
satya eka sabe bhagavān

Jayapatākā Swami: Whatever you see in this universe is an illusion. Only truth is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

satya āra vaiṣṇava, tā-vine yateka saba,
michā kari’ karaha geyāna

Jayapatākā Swami: And the Vaiṣṇavas are also true. Apart from them, everything else is a false illusion, know this for sure.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.28

michā suta, pati, nārī, pitā mātā yata bali,

pariṇāme ke vā kāhāra

Jayapatākā Swami: It is illusory or false, to say, son, husband, wife, father, mother - whatever you say, in the end, who is whose?

śrī-kṛṣṇacaraṇa bahi, āra ta kuṭumba nāhi,

yata dekha e māyā tāhāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Other than Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet, there is no other family. Whatever you see is Lord Kṛṣṇa’s māyā, illusory energy.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.29

kibā nārī, puruṣa, sabhāri se ātmā eka’
michā māyāvandhe rahe dui

Jayapatākā Swami: Whether a woman or a man, for everyone the soul is one, ātmā. But due to the false bondage of māyā, the illusory energy, they seem to be two.

śrīkṛṣṇa sabhāra pati, āra saba prakṛti,
ei kathā nā bujhaye koi

Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the husband and master of everybody. Everyone else is His energies or wives. This truth no one understands.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.30

rakta-retaḥ-sammilane, janma viṣṭhā-mūtra-sthāne,
bhūme paḍe haṣā ageyāna

Jayapatākā Swami: Blood and semen combine, and one is born from the place of stool and urine, one falls to the ground in ignorance.

bāla, yuvā, vṛddha haṣā, nānāduḥkhe kaṣṭa pāṣā,
dehe gehe kare abhimāna

Jayapatākā Swami: There are many troubles and sufferings that one experiences, from their childhood, youth, to old age, still one is very proud of his body and home.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.31

bandhu kari yāre pāli, tārā saba dei gāli,
abhimāne vṛddhakāla vaṣce

Jayapatākā Swami: All the friends that one has maintained as well-wishers, all of them rebuke criticism, and in one’s old age one passes on broken pride.

śravaṇa-nayāna-āndhe, viṣāda bhāviyā kānde,
tabhu nāhi bhajaye govinde

Jayapatākā Swami: Deaf and blind, one laments, weeping, but they don’t worship Lord Govinda.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.32

kṛṣṇa bhajivāra tare, deha dhari’ e saṁsāre,
māyāvandhe pāśare āpanā

Jayapatākā Swami: To worship Lord Kṛṣṇa, one takes birth as a human being in this world of birth and death. But due to be being bound by māyā, the illusory energies, he forgets his spiritual identity.

ahaṅkāre matta haṣā, nijaprabhu pāśariyā,
śeṣe mare narakayantraṇā

Jayapatākā Swami: Being intoxicated with false pride, forgetting one’s master, one dies, undergoing a hellish suffering.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.33

tora nāma viṣṇupriyā, sārthaka karaha ihā,
michā śoka nā karaha cite

Jayapatākā Swami: Your name is Viṣṇu-priyā, (she who is very dear to Lord Viṣṇu). Please make that an appropriate name for you. Please give up this false lamentation in your heart.

e tore kahiluṁ kathā, dūra kara āna-cintā,
mana-deha kṛṣṇera carite

Jayapatākā Swami: I tell you this confidential instruction. Throw your other thoughts far away and dedicate your mind and body in Lord Kṛṣṇa’s spiritual activities.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.34

āpane īśvara haṣā, dūra kare nija-māyā,
viṣṇupriyā parasannacita

Jayapatākā Swami: Being Himself the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He threw away His illusory energy and He made Viṣṇu-priyā joyful at heart.

dure gela duḥkha-śoka, ānande bharala buka,
caturbhuja dekhe ācambita

Jayapatākā Swami: Her suffering and lamentation went far away, Her heart was filled with transcendental bliss, suddenly she saw the four-armed form of Lord Viṣṇu.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.35

tabe devī viṣṇupriyā, caturbhuja dekhiyā,
pati buddhi nāhi chāḍe tabhu

Jayapatākā Swami: Although goddess Viṣṇu-priyā saw the four-armed form of Lord Viṣṇu before her, she never abandoned the idea that Lord Gaura was her husband.

paḍiyā caraṇatale, praṇati minati kare,
eka nivedana śuna prabhu

Jayapatākā Swami: Falling down before the Lord’s lotus feet, she humbly submitted her plea. “Oh Lord, please hear one request I place before You!”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.36

mo ati adhama chāra, janamila e saṁsāra,
tumi mora priya prāṇapati

Jayapatākā Swami: I am the most worthless person, like a pile of ashes. I have taken birth in this material world of birth and death. You are the only dear master of my life.

ehena sampada mora, dāsī haiyāchilu tora,
ki lāgiyā bhela adhogati

Jayapatākā Swami: You are my great treasure. I am Your maidservant. Why then have I got this downfall?

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.37

ihā bali’ viṣṇupriyā, kānde utaroli haṣā,
adhika bāḍhala paramāda

Jayapatākā Swami: Speaking these words, Viṣṇu-priyā wept loudly. Her grief increased immensely.

priyajana-ārati dekhi’, chala chala kare āṁkhi,
kole kari’ karilā prasāda

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing His very dear devotee’s distress, Lord Gaurāṅga also wept. The tears flowing from His eyes, then He embraced her and gave her His mercy.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.38

śuna devī viṣṇupriyā, e tore kahila hiyā,
yakhane ye tumi mane kara

Jayapatākā Swami: He said, “Please listen, Oh dear goddess Viṣṇu-priyā. I will tell you what is in My heart. Which is what you think.”

āmi yathā tathā yāi, āchiye tomāra ṭhāṁi,
satya satya kahilāma dṛḍha

Jayapatākā Swami: Wherever I go, when you think of Me, I will be by your side. I solemnly tell you, this is the truth. I say, this is the truth.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.39

kṛṣṇa-ājñāvāṇī śuni’, viṣṇupriyā mane, guṇi
svatantra īśvara tumi prabhu

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing Lord Kṛṣṇa’s commanding words, Viṣṇu-priyā thought for a moment and said. You are the independent Supreme Lord.

nijasukhe kara kāja, ke dibe tāhāte vādha,
pratyuttara nā dileka tabhu

Jayapatākā Swami: You should do whatever gives you happiness. Who will give you obstacle to that? Still Lord Viśvambhara did not reply to that.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.40

viṣṇupriyā heṭhamukhī, chalachala kare āṁkhi,
dekhi’ prabhu sarasa sambhāṣe

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Viṣṇu-priyā hang her head and tears flowed from her eyes. Seeing this Lord Viśvambhara, succulently conversed with her.

prabhu-ācaraṇa-kathā, śunite lāgaye vyathā,
guṇa gāya e locanadāse

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the talk of Lord Gaurāṅga’s activities, when heard, increases one pain. The qualities sung by this Locana dāsa.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.41

barāḍi rāga—diśā
mora prāṇa āre dvijacāṁda nāre haya

Jayapatākā Swami: O! He who is the moon of the brāhmaṇas, is my very life.

madanamohana gaurā-rūpera madhurī
sadāi jāgiche rūpera bālāi laṣā maridhru

Jayapatākā Swami: The sweetness of Lord Gaurāṅga’s form charms even Kāmadeva, Cupid. May always be awake in me, the form of the Lord Gaurāṅga.

eimane anumāne dina-rātri yāya
āguna jvalila yena sabhāra hiyāya

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, thinking, the days and nights passed. It was as if, flames blazed in everyone’s hearts. So, Lord Gaurāṅga tried to convince everyone, His associates, His mother, His wife, that He had to leave and take sannyāsa. So, everyone agreed, but they were still in love with Him. They couldn’t bear being separated from Him. So, instead of hearing the inevitable, they were burning in their hearts.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.42

sakala bhaktagaṇa ekatra haiyā
gaurā-guṇagāthā kahe marame kāndiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Gathering together, all the devotees sang the glories of Lord Gaurāṅga. Revealing their hearts, they wept.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.43

śacī, viṣṇupriyā doṁhe kānde divāniśi
daśadik andhakāra—śūnya hena vāsi

Jayapatākā Swami: Mother Śacī and Viṣṇu-priyā, the two of them were crying all day and night. The ten directions seemed like darkness. The world appeared to be void.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 12.44

purajana parijana soyātha nā pāya
chaṭapaṭa kari’ saba nagare beḍāya

Jayapatākā Swami: The people of Navadvīpa and the friends and relatives of Lord Gaurāṅga found no peace. Impatiently, they wandered around in the city.

So, although they understood the inevitable that the Lord would take sannyāsa, although He convinced everyone that He has to do this, still no one was satisfied, because they had such intense love of the Lord. They could not think to be separated from Him. So restlessly they were wandering around, and everyone was disturbed. They were fidgeting, and they had no peace thinking of the Lord’s departure.

Thus ends the chapter, Viṣṇu-priyā is Pacified by Seeing the Four-handed Form of Viśvambhara.

So, Viṣṇu-priyā is fixed in her relationship with Lord Gaura, as His wife. Just as mother Śacī is fixed with Lord Gaurāṅga as His mother. And the different associates of the Lord are fixed as the Lord’s friends or servants. Everyone was fixed in their particular spiritual relationship, and although they heard the instructions, they understood that He is the independent lord, He can do whatever He wants. But they all love Him, and they cannot think to live without Him. That is why Locana dāsa who composed this Caitanya-maṅgala, is feeling great pain in his heart. So, this detail of Lord Gaurāṅga’s discussion with His different devotees, is mentioned in the Caitanya-maṅgala. Like that the different pastimes of the Lord are detailed in different scriptures. We are trying to combine all of them together to get a more complete vision of the Lord’s pastimes, this is our humble attempt.

Otherwise, a dream of a guru under normal circumstances, is a very auspicious thing.
