The following is a reading from the new Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on August 30th, 2020 in Śrī Dhāma Māyāpur, India.

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānanda-mādhavam śrī caitanya iśvaram

Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.33

śrīdharera lāu-bheṭa o janaika sukṛtimānera dugdhabheṭa, tāhā pākārtha jananīke ādeśa—

eka lāu hāte kari’ sukṛti śrīdhara
henai samaye āsi’ hailā gocara

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time the pure devotee Śrīdhara, he appeared there with a bottle gourd in his hand.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.34

lāu-bheṭa dekhi’ hāse śrī-gaurasundare
“kothāya pāilā?” prabhu jijñāse tāhāre

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing the bottle gourd offering, Lord Śrī Gaurasundara laughed and asked him, “Where did you get that?”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.35

nija-mane jāne prabhu “kāli calibāṅa
ei lāu bhojana karite nārilāṅa

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Gaurāṅga thought that tomorrow I will leave. Therefore, I will not be able to eat this bottle gourd.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.36

śrīdharera padārtha ki haibe anyathā
e lāu bhojana āji kariba sarvathā

Jayapatākā Swami: Whatever My devotee Śrīdhara brings, cannot be wasted. So, I must eat this bottle gourd today.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.37

eteka cintiyā bhakta-vātsalya rākhite
jananīre balilena randhana karite

Jayapatākā Swami: Thinking in this way, to maintain His affection for His devotees, He requested His mother to cook the bottle gourd. So, the Lord He is so affectionate to His devotees. His mood is Bhakta-vatsala. Very affectionate to His devotees. In His different avatāras, He shows His affection. In Narasiṁha-avatāra He showed His affection for Prahlāda Mahārāja. In Vāmana-avatāra, He showed His affection to Bali Mahārāja. In Kṛṣṇa avatāra He showed His affection to Arjuna and the Pāṇḍavas. So, in all the avatāras His mood is affection for His devotees. So, it seems normally, He would take bottle gourd at this time, but He is asking His mother to cook because of His affection for His devotee.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.38

henai samaye āra kona bhāgyavān
dugdha-bheṭa āniyā dilena vidyamāna

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time, a fortunate person appeared and offered a pot of milk to Lord Gaurāṅga.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.39

hāsiyāṭhākura bale,—“baḍa bhāla bhāla
dugdha lāu pāka giyā karaha sakāla

Jayapatākā Swami: While smiling, Lord Gaurāṅga said, this is very nice, very nice! Cook the milk and the bottle gourd together. So, milk and bottle gourd makes a very nice sweet preparation - kind of special, like sweet rice, but instead of rice we use bottle gourd.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.40

santoṣe calilāśacī karite randhana
hena bhakta-vatsala śrī-śacīra nandana

Jayapatākā Swami: Mother Śacī immediately went to cook in great satisfaction. In this way Lord Śrī Śacīnandana, the son of mother Śacī was so affectionate to His devotees.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.41

ei mate mahānande vaikuṇṭha-īśvara
kautuke āchena rātri dvitīya prahara

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha, in great happiness, passed the evening in ecstatic pastimes.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.42

prabhura bhojana o viśrāmānte yātrā—

sabāre vidāya diyā prabhu viśvambhara
bhojane vasilā āsi’ tridaśa-īśvara

Jayapatākā Swami: After bidding everyone farewell, seeing them off, Lord Viśvambhara, Lord of the three worlds, sat down to take His dinner.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.43

bhojana kariyā prabhu mukha-śuddhi kari’
calilāśayana-ghare gaurāṅga-śrī-hari

Jayapatākā Swami: When He finished eating, Lord Gaurāṅga, Śrī Hari, washed His mouth and went to His bedroom.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.44

yoga-nidrā-prati dṛṣṭi karilā īśvara
nikaṭe śuilā haridāsa gadādhara

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga glanced at His yoga-nidrā (mystic sleep), while Haridāsa Ṭhākura and Gadādhara Paṇḍita laid down nearby.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): Śrī Śacīdevī cooked a preparation with the bottle-gourd and milk offered by Śrīdhara and another fortunate soul. After taking that preparation, Gaurasundara went to His bedroom later in the night. As He slept, Gadādhara Paṇḍita was also sleeping nearby. They all slept under the influence of yoga-nidrā.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.45

āi jāne āji prabhu karibe gamana
āira nāhika nidrā, kānde anukṣaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Mother Śacī knew that Lord Gaurāṅga would leave at night. Mother Śacī was unable to sleep, and she constantly wept.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.46

‘daṇḍa cāri rātri āche’ ṭhākura jāniyāu
ṭhilena calibāre nasā-ghrāṇa laiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Knowing that four daṇḍas (two hours) were left in the night, the Lord Gaurāṅga rose up in order to leave. He observed the passage of air through His nose.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): “During the brahma-muhūrta, Śrī Gaurasundara observed the movement of His breath through His nose and decided that the auspicious time for His departure had come.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.47

gadādharera prabhu-saṅge gamanecchā o prabhura pratyākhyāna—

gadādhara haridāsa uṭhilena jāni’
gadādhara balena,—“caliba saṅge āmi”

Jayapatākā Swami: Gadādhara Paṇḍita and Haridāsa Ṭhākura also woke, Gadādhara Paṇḍita said to the Lord, “I will accompany You.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.48

prabhu bale,—“āmāra nāhika kāru saṅga
eka advitīya se āmāra sarva raṅga”

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord replied, “No one will go with Me. I am one without a second and this is My personal pastime.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.49

āi jānilena mātra prabhura gamana
duyāre vasiyā rahilena tata-kṣaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Mother Śacī realized that it was time for Lord Gaurāṅga’s departure. So, she came, sat in the doorway, and remained there.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.50

prabhura jananīke prabodha-dāna—

jananīre dekhi’ prabhu dhari’ tāna kara
vasiyā kahena bahu prabodha-uttara

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing His mother, Lord Gaurāṅga held her hands. He sat and, in many ways, He solaced her.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.51

vistara karilā tumi āmāra pālana
paḍilāṅa, śunilāṅa tomāra kāraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: You have maintained Me very nicely. Because of you, I have nicely studied and learnt.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.52

āpanāra tilārddheko nā lailā sukha
ājanma āmāra tumi bāḍāilā bhoga

Jayapatākā Swami: Without caring a bit for Your personal happiness, since My birth, you have increased My pleasure.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.53

daṇḍe daṇḍe yata sneha karilā āmāre
āmi koṭī-kalpe o nāriba śodhibāre

Jayapatākā Swami: At every moment, the amount of affection you have given to Me, even in ten million days of Brahmā, I will not be able to repay, that debt.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): At the time of departure Śrī Gaurasundara said to His mother, “Apart from serving Me, you have not done anything for your own happiness. Therefore, I will not be able to repay My debt to you even in millions of kalpas.”

The eternal Śrī Gaurasundara never leaves His eternal mother. That is why Śrī Śacīdevī, who is the shelter of transcendental vātsalya-rasa, is the shelter of Śrī Gaurasundara's vātsalya-rasa in His eternal unmanifest pastimes. She never leaves His association for even a moment.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, mother Śacī is the personification of parental love, and that is why she is eternally connected with Lord Caitanya, and so, He is expressing His indebtedness to her.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.54

tomāra prasāde se tāhāra pratikāra
āmi punaḥ janma janma ṛṇī se tomāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Only by your mercy will I be relieved of My debt. Life after life, I will still be indebted to you. So, we can see that mother Śacī, she is always serving as the Lord’s mother. She is so affectionate that the Lord every time He appears, takes her as His mother.

So, we know that there are five primary rasas. In Vṛndāvana and in Śrī Māyāpur Navadvīpa dhāma, there are friendship, parental love and conjugal love are the principle emotions. So, these relationships which mother Śacī is something transcendental. Any questions?

Question: Hare Kṛṣṇa, dear Guru Mahārāja! Please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda. When you tell us Caitanya-līlā it all floats before our eyes like pictures. This comes and goes without wanting to imagine. Is it an offence?

—Trying to be your servant, Sudevī Jayaśrī devī dāsī

Jayapatākā Swami: I don’t know, I don’t know, when I am telling the pastime, I personally see it, and I feel it. And it is very difficult to tell the pastime of how Lord Caitanya leaving, with the mood of mother Śacī. But somehow Lord Caitanya is satisfying her, He is solacing her. But I don’t think there is any way you can satisfy her. So, the Lord is the Lord of all the rasas, and I don’t exactly know what your question, but if you are able to feel a little bit of the transcendental emotion of the Lord, then that will be my success. So, if you don’t feel anything, at least by listening, maybe eventually you will be able to feel. So how Kholaveca Śrīdhara brought a lāu, a bottle gourd, the Lord is thinking that this pure devotee has brought Me an offering of bottle gourd, and I will leave tonight. Tomorrow I won’t be able to take it. And then He told His mother to cook it up, and someone else, a fortunate soul, we don’t know who, he brought a pot of milk. So, Lord Caitanya, He said this is very good, Cook the lāu, the bottle gourd and the milk together. So we see how merciful the Lord is and how much He appreciates His devotees. That, He, just to please His devotee, He is taking the offering. Although normally He wouldn’t be taking this, bottle gourd at night.

So, how the Lord is so merciful to His devotees, how He is so kind. At the same time, He is leaving to take sannyāsa, and now He is trying to solace His mother, console His mother. And He is going to break the hearts for many people. But He is independent, and He is doing this for His pastime. So it‘s very interesting to see – we are getting real scientific knowledge about the Personality of Godhead, how wonderful He is, and the impersonalists, the Māyāvādīs, the materialists, they have no idea. They are not into this confidential knowledge of the Lord. The impersonalists think that He is a material manifestation. They don’t believe that any Personality can be spiritual. They think personality, by definition is material. They believe that the Supreme Truth is impersonal. But the Lord, He is sac-cid-ānanda - eternal, blissful and know. And only the devotees can appreciate. And actually, the pastime of Lord Caitanya are post-graduate studies of the Personality of Godhead. So, we hope that all of you appreciate these pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa Caitanya.

His Grace Mahāvarāha dāsa: Guru Mahārāja said, I have requested all the devotees to pray for His Holiness Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Goswami Mahārāja, for his very speedy recovery and also Her Grace Ramā devī, a disciple of Śrīla Prabhupāda, who has been residing in Māyāpur, to pray for her health recovery. Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare
