Introduction: So, we are continuing with the compilation of the Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book. This chapter is entitled:

Lamentation of the Residents of Navadvīpa Hearing About Nimāi Leaving the Home for Sannyāsa

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.89

sarva navadvīpe prabhura gṛhatyāga-saṁbāda-pracāra o sakalera śoka—
kata-kṣaṇe sarva-navadvīpe haila dhvani
sannyāsa karite calilena dvija-maṇi

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time all of the residents of Navadvīpa, spread the news that the crest jewel of the twice born, Nimāi Paṇḍita, had left Navadvīpa to take sannyāsa.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 2.13.6

kibā dina-mājhe yena rabi lukāila
sarovara teji’ haṁsagaṇa kothā gela

Jayapatākā Swami: The lamentation was such that it was as if, in the middle of the day the sun had disappeared, as if the swans had deserted the lakes and had gone somewhere.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 2.13.7

kibā deha teji’ prāṇa gela acambite
bhramarā chaḍila yena padmera pīrite

Jayapatākā Swami: Suddenly it was as if the life airs had left their bodies, and as if the bumblebees, had given up their affection for the lotus flowers.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 2.13.8

biccheda-viyogamaya haila navadvīpe
śokera parvata yena sabhākāre cāpe

Jayapatākā Swami: A grief of separation filled Navadvīpa, it was as if a mountain of anguish and lamentation now crushed on everyone.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.090

śuni’ sarva-lokera lāgila camatkāra
dhāiyā āilā sarva-loka nadīyāra

Jayapatākā Swami: On hearing the news, people of Navadvīpa were struck with wonder. They ran to the house of the Lord. All the people of Navadvīpa went to the house of the Lord.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.091

āsi’ sarva-loka dekhe prabhura bāḍīte
śūnya bāḍī sabe lāgiyāchena kāndite

Jayapatākā Swami: All the people of Navadvīpa came to Lord Gaurāṅga’s house. When they saw the empty house they also began to cry.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.092

prabhu-virahe pāṣaṇḍī nindakerao khedokti—
takhane se ‘hāya hāya’ kare sarva-loka
parama nindaka pāṣaṇḍī o pāya śoka

Jayapatākā Swami: All the people were lamenting and saying, “Haya! Haya! Haya!” Even the great criticizers and atheists also were lamenting.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.093

“pāpiṣṭha āmarā nā cinila hela jana”
anutāpa kari' sabe karena rodana

Jayapatākā Swami: “We are very sinful, therefore we could not recognize Lord Viśvambhara”, as they repented in this way, they also began to cry.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.094

bhūmite paḍiyā kānde nagariyā-gaṇa
“āra nā dekhiba tāṅra se candra-vadana”

Jayapatākā Swami: The Navadvīpa town people fell to the ground crying and rolled on the ground. We will not see again, His moonlike face. So, by Lord Gaurāṅga leaving, everyone was lamenting. They realized that they had not really valued sufficiently, the association of the Lord, the deliverer of the most fallen, also Jagāi Madhāi and others, were delivered by Him. Now that He was gone, even the atheists and offenders were lamenting. What hope do they have to be delivered when the Lord left?

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.095

keha bale,—“cala ghare dvāre agni diyā
kāṇe pari' kuṇḍala caliba yogī hañā

Jayapatākā Swami: Someone said, “Let us go to our house and light it on fire.” Let us leave this place and become yogī, mendicant and wear ivory earrings as a sign of a mendicant.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): Realizing that Śrī Gauracandra has taken sannyāsa, some people decided that they would set fire to their house and leave that place to become kāṇphāṭ-yogīs. Kāṇphāṭ-yogīs prevent external sound vibrations from entering their ears by piercing their ears and putting pegs in those two holes to cover their eardrums.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, these are the category of the bogus yogīs. People were saying irrational things in anguish, over the departure of Lord Viśvambhara.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.096

hena prabhu navadvīpa chāḍila yakhana
āra kene āche āmā'-sabāra jīvana”

Jayapatākā Swami: When Lord Gaurāṅga had left Navadvīpa, why should we continue to live?

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.097

ki strī puruṣa ye śunila nadīyāra
sabei viṣāda bai nā bhāvaye āra

Jayapatākā Swami: Whether women or men, whoever in Navadvīpa heard this, simply lamented. They could not think of anything else.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.098

sarva jīvoddhārābhilāṣei prabhura līlā—
prabhu se jānaye yāre tāriba ye mate
sarva-jīva uddhāra kariba hena mate

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga knew how to deliver the fallen souls, to deliver all the conditioned souls, in which way. Lord Caitanya was being offended by the students and therefore, the students by offending Him, they could not achieve pure devotional service. In order to deliver all the fallen souls, He decided to take sannyāsa. By doing that, all the people of Navadvīpa, started to lament. So, the Lord’s plan how to deliver everyone, was manifested.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.099

nindā-dveṣa-ādi yāra manete āchila
prabhura viraha-sarpa pāṣaṇḍe daṁśila

Jayapatākā Swami: Those criticizers and envious people, offenders, etc. of this kind of mentality, they were also bitten by the snake of separation from Lord Gaurāṅga.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.100

sarva-jīva-nātha gauracandra jaya jaya
bhāla raṅge sabe uddhārile dayā-maya

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord of all living entities, Lord Gauracandra, all glories to You! All glories to You! He is, the all merciful Lord! He delivered everyone by His expert pastime.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.101

prabhura sannyāsa-kathā-śravaṇera phala—
śuna śuna āre bhāi, prabhura sannyāsa
ye kathāśunile karma-bandha yāya nāśa

Jayapatākā Swami: “Listen, listen my dear brothers! By hearing the description of Lord Gaurāṅga’s accepting sannyāsa, this narration will destroy the bondage resulting from fruitive activities.”

So, hearing how the devotees and non-devotees of Navadvīpa, everyone was lamenting because of the departure of Nimāi. In this way, everyone got purified. Even hearing about this pastime frees one from the reaction of karma, or fruitive activities. So, in this way the whole of Navadvīpa, and all the people subsequently hear about this are delivered.

Thus Ends the Chapter, Lamentation of the Residents of Navadvīpa Hearing About Nimāi Leaving the Home for Sannyāsa
