paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram
Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

Introduction: So, we are continuing with the pastime of Lord Caitanya being initiated as a sannyāsi, and this pastime of the Lord fulfills the predictions in the Purāṇas, that this avatāra will spend 24 years in the house and 24 years as a sannyāsī. We will continue the chapter entitled:

Keśava Bhāratī “Initiates” Viśvambharadeva into Sannyāsa Āśrama (Part 2)

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.92

bujhila sakala kāja bhāvatī gosāñi
sannyāsa karāba tore - śunaha nimāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: Keśava Bhāratī Gosvāmī understood everything. He said, “I will give You sannyāsa, please hear Nimāi.”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.93

e bola śuniyā prabhu nācaye ānande
hari hari’ bolaye gabhīra-meghanāde

Jayapatākā Swami: When Lord Gaurāṅga heard these words, from Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja He joyfully danced and He called out in a voice like a thundering cloud, “Haribol! Haribol! Hari! Hari!”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.94

gaura-śarīre bhela pulaka sāri sari
amiyā pasāre yena aṅgera mādhurī

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga’s body, His fair form had all the hairs standing erect in lines. The sweetness of His bodily limbs was like a flood of nectar.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.95

aruṇa-nayane jala jhare anibāra
dekhiyā sakala loka kare hāhākāra

Jayapatākā Swami: His reddish eyes incessantly shed tears. Seeing this all the people present shouted, “HA! HA!”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.158

bhāratī balena,—“ei mahā-mantra-vara
kṛṣṇera prasāde ki tomāra agocara

Jayapatākā Swami: Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja said, this is the greatest of all mantras. By the mercy of Lord Kṛṣṇa, what is unknown to You?

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.138

pūravī sindhurā—rāga
muṇḍana karila prabhu dekhi’ śubhakṣaṇe
sannyāsa karaye śubhadine saṁkramaṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: On seeing the shaving of His head which was now done, Lord Gaurāṅga looked for an auspicious moment, and He accepted sannyāsa, on an auspicious day, at an auspicious moment.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 11.56: Though He was the actual guru, playing the role of a disciple He received the mantra, spreading mercy to the world. Seeing that the Lord with His hairs standing on end desired to go, Keśava Bhāratī, saying “Take this,” gave Him red cloth and a daṇḍa

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.159

prabhura ājñāya tabe keśava bhāratī
sei mantra prabhure kahilā mahāmati

Jayapatākā Swami: On receiving the instruction of Lord Gaurāṅga, Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja gave the Lord the very mantra, into the ear of the Lord. Being very broadminded, Keśava Bhāratī.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.8: He uttered that transcendentally pure mantra which is chanted by sannyāsīs. three times in his ear. Hearing it, Śrī Keśava replied, "Indeed, this is the supremely purifying mantra of Śrī Hari.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja said the same mantra that he received from Lord Gaurāṅga, and he admitted that this mantra is the supremely purifying mantra of Śrī Hari.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.9: Thus by a pretense the one supreme and changeless guru, who is the Master of all worlds, initiated His guru. Then with hands folded in supplication, Prabhu said, “He guru! Kindly fulfil My heart's longing and today endow Me with the order of sannyāsa.”

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.10: Then at the auspicious moment of the sun's journey from Capricorn into Aquarius, that intelligent mahātmā, Śrī Keśava, who was learned in the precepts of spiritual life, gave back the sannyāsa-mantra to Śrī Hari.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya received sannyāsa at the auspicious time of Makara-saṅkrānti.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.139

makara leuṭe kumbha āise hena vele
sannyāsera mantra śuru kahe henakāle

Jayapatākā Swami: At the junction of Capricorn and Aquarius, at that very moment, Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja, recited the sannyāsa mantra in the ear of Lord Gaurāṅga.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.140

caudige vaiṣṇavagaṇa kare saṅkīrtane
mastra kahe nyāsī viśvambharera śravaṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: In all directions, the assembled Vaiṣṇavas were doing saṅkīrtana, congregational chanting of the holy name. At that time, Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja whispered the sannyāsa-mantra in the ear of Lord Viśvambhara.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.11: As the hairs of His slender body thrilled with joy, and His chest became wet with tears, Śrī Hari Deva personally said with a faltering voice, “I have got sannyāsa!”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.141

mantra pāñā viśvambhara pulakita-aṅga
śataguṇa bāḍhe kṛṣṇapremāra taraṅga

Jayapatākā Swami: Having received the sannyāsa-mantra, Lord Viśvambhara’s hairs on His body stood erect. The waves of pure ecstatic love of Kṛṣṇa, kṛṣṇa-prema, increased by hundreds of times!

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.142

aruṇa-nayane jala jhare anibāra
kṣaṇe mālasāṭa māre chāḍe huhuṅkāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Tears flowed incessantly from His reddish eyes. For a moment He slapped His arms and let out a loud roar.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.143

‘sannyāsa karila’ ihā baliyā ullāsa
punaḥ punaḥ premānande aṭṭa-aṭṭa hāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: The sannyāsa is done, He joyfully said, again and again, He laughed very loudly.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.160

catur-dike hari-nāma sumaṅgala-dhvani
sannyāsa karilā vaikuṇṭhera cūḍāmaṇi

Jayapatākā Swami: In all directions the most auspicious sound of the chanting of the holy names of Hari occurred, while the crest jewel of Vaikuṇṭha accepted the order of sannyāsa.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.161

prabhura sannyāsa-veśe mahābhāratera ślokera yathārthya-sthāpana—
parilena aruṇa vasana manohara
tāhāte hailā koṭi-kandarpa-sundara

Jayapatākā Swami: When Lord Gaurāṅga put on the enchanting saffron dress, He appeared as beautiful as millions of Cupids.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.162

sarva aṅga śrī-mastaka candane lepita
mālāya pūrṇita śrī-vigraha suśobhita

Jayapatākā Swami: All over His beautiful body and His auspicious head were decorated with sandalwood pulp, and He was wearing flower garlands on His transcendental body, and all appeared very beautiful.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.12: Then seeing that Śrī Hari was about to depart, His guru overtook Him and quickly placed the daṇda and sannyāsa cloth in His hand, saying, “Bho! Good sir! Please take these also!” Hearing him, that conqueror of the foes of spiritual life, accepted those articles of sannyāsa.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.163

daṇḍa-kamaṇḍalu dui śrī-haste ujjvala
niravadhi nija-preme ānande vihvala

Jayapatākā Swami: Holding in His auspicious hands, the daṇḍa and the kamaṇḍalu (water pot) in His two brilliant hands, the Lord was constantly overwhelmed with the ecstasy of His own ecstatic love.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.164

koṭi koṭi candra jini' śobhe śrī-vadana
prema-dhāre pūrṇa dui kamala-nayana

Jayapatākā Swami: The beautiful transcendental face of the Lord was more attractive than millions and millions of moons, and His two lotus eyes were filled with tears of spiritual love.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.165

kibā se sannyāsi-rūpa haila prakāśa
pūrṇa kari' tāhā varṇibena vedavyāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: That wonderful sannyāsa form of Lord Gaurāṅga was manifested, and that will be elaborately described by Vedavyāsa.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.166

`sahasra-nāme' te ye kahilā vedavyāsa
`kona avatāre prabhu karena sannyāsa'

Jayapatākā Swami: In the thousand names of Viṣṇu, which was chanted by Vedavyāsa, in one of the avatāras of the Lord, the Lord appears as a sannyāsī. This is actually the form of Lord Caitanya. He is the incarnation of the Lord, who accepted sannyāsa. We don’t see any other incarnation who took sannyāsa. Vāmana-deva was a brāhmaṇa midget, dwarf, and He expanded into Trivikrama, but it never says He took sannyāsa. And others like Lord Rāma, He also did not take sannyāsa. So who else other than Lord Caitanya took sannyāsa?

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.167

ei tāhā satya karilena dvijarāja
e marma jānaye saba-vaiṣṇava-samāja

Jayapatākā Swami: This statement has been fulfilled by the best of the twice-born. This secret is well-known to all the society of Vaiṣṇavas.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.168

(mahābhārate dānadharme 149, sahasranāma-stotre 75 saṃkhyā)—
In the Mahābhārata, Dāna-dharma, Viṣṇu-sahasra-nāma-stotra, it is stated:

sannyāsa-kṛc chamaḥ śānto
niṣṭhā-śānti-parāyaṇaḥ

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): In His later pastimes He accepts the sannyāsa order, and He is equipoised and peaceful. He is the highest abode of peace and devotion, for He silences the impersonalist non-devotees.” The names of the Lord mentioned in this regard in the Viṣṇu-sahasra-nāma are sannyāsa-kṛt (He who takes sannyāsa), Śama-śānta (He who is detached from material enjoyment), and Bhagavān-niṣṭha (He who is attached to the Supreme Lord). Śrī Gaurasundara fulfilled or revealed the meaning of all of His own names.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sometimes people wonder whether Lord Caitanya is the Supreme Personality of Godhead? So, there are many predictions and statements in the Vedas, that confirm that Lord Gaurāṅga is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So, Lord Caitanya fulfilled this prediction.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.13: Then being very eager to teach the principle of guru-bhakti, he honored the instruction of His guru and resided in that place for the day. Then suddenly at night our Prabhu began to sing and dance in the company of His guru.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.14: In great bliss the guru of the gurus of all embodied beings danced there with his disciple, Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya. Filled with ānanda, which ever increased more and more, that mahātmā then considered brahma-sukha to be insignificant.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.15: When their singing and dancing had ended, Keśava Bharatī said to Śrī Hari, “Who actually accepted the daṇda from my fingertips? Who is He that held Me within His arms and commanded me to dance?”

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.16: "Now that I have begun to dance, I am wholly overwhelmed and happily float in an ocean of bliss.” Hearing his, the Vaiṣṇavas became most astonished and were agitated due to prema and lost their patience.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.17: Hearing these great words with full of meaning from His guru, Śrī Hari, who is the shelter to all sublime qualities and ātmarāma, in a mood of immense exultation, sang and danced with His men in that place.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.2.18: That Keśava Bhāratī had become a soul fully immersed in love of Kṛṣṇa. Tossing far away his daṇda and kamaṇḍalu, he danced with Mahāprabhu to purify his sannyāsa-dharma.

Jayapatākā Swami: So Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja after giving sannyāsa to Lord Caitanya, he joined in the kīrtana with Lord Caitanya, congregational chanting and dancing, He became overwhelmed in spiritual ecstatic love and he wondered, who have I given sannyāsa to? And he was now floating in an ocean of spiritual, loving, ecstasy, by the mercy of Lord Caitanya.

Thus ends the chapter, Keśava Bhāratī “Initiates” Viśvambaradeva into Sannyāsa Āśrama (Part 2)
