Introduction: So today we are continuing with the Lord Caitanya sannyāsa ceremony.

Chapter today is entitled:

Keśava Bhāratī Gives the Name “Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya” to Viśvambharadeva

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.169

prabhura nāmakaraṇārtha bhāratīra cintā o śuddhā sarasvatīra bhāratī-jihvāya prabhura sannyāsa-nāma-varṇana—
tabe nāma thuibāre keśava bhāratī
mane mane cintite lāgilā mahāmati

Jayapatākā Swami: Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja, it was time for him to give a name for Viśvambharadeva. So, he was thinking to himself, what name to give. So Keśava Bhāratī is described as mahāmati or magnanimous.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.170

“caturdaśa-bhuvanete e-mata vaiṣṇava
āmāra nayane nāhi haya anubhava

Jayapatākā Swami: Within the fourteen worlds this kind of Vaiṣṇava, I cannot find. I have never seen anyone like this. This is my realization.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.171

ataeva kothāo nā thāke yei nāma
hena nāma thuile mora pūrṇa haya kāma

Jayapatākā Swami: Therefore, I will give such a name which is not to be found anywhere. By giving such a name, my heart’s desire will be fulfilled.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.172

mūle bhāratīra śiṣya `bhāratī' se haye
ihāne ta' tāhā thuibāre yogya nahe”

Jayapatākā Swami: Normally any disciple of a Bhāratī, should also be named Bhāratī. But that name is not suitable for Him.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.173

bhāgyavān nyāsibara eteka cintite
śuddhā sarasvatī tāna āilā jihvāte

Jayapatākā Swami: As that topmost, fortunate sannyāsī was thinking in this way, pure Sarasvatī devī, appeared on his tongue. Pure Sarasvatī devī, the transcendental goddess of learning, appeared on his tongue.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): The titles used by each class of person within a sampradāya (community) are accepted along with the person's name in that sampradāya, but in this case Śrī Gaurasundara did not accept the title of Bhāratī from Keśava Bhāratī. By the influence of pure devotional service, the goddess of transcendental knowledge appeared on the tongue of Bhāratī during Mahāprabhu's name-giving ceremony.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So a unique name had to be given to Viśvambhara Mahāprabhu. So, saying that He was the topmost Vaiṣṇava, no one like Him had ever been seen by Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja. So He deserves a unique name.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.174

bhāratī-kartṛka prabhura nāmakaraṇa o tadartha prakāśa—
pāiyā ucita nāma keśava-bhāratī
prabhu-vakṣe hasta diyā bale śuddha-mati

Jayapatākā Swami: Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja, finding the appropriate name, placed his hand on the chest of Lord Gaurāṅga, and with a pure heart, he spoke.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): The goddess of material knowledge is known as Duṣṭā-Sarasvatī. When statements that inspire service to the Supreme Lord are spoken, the goddess of learning remains engaged in the service of the Lord

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.144

henai samaya kahe bhāratī-gosāñi
ki nāma tomāra habe—śunaha nimāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time, Keśava Bhāratī Gosāñi spoke, “O, what name will be Yours? Please listen, Nimāi.”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.145

yateka vaiṣṇavagaṇa chila seikhāne
sabhe mili nyāsibara kare anumāne

Jayapatākā Swami: There were many Vaiṣṇavas present there. They were all guessing what name, the best of the sannyāsīs would give.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.146

buddhi-anusāre kahe–yāra yei mane
henakāle śubhavāṇī uṭhila gagane

Jayapatākā Swami: According to their intelligence, everyone was speaking, whatever came to their mind. At that time, an auspicious voice appeared from the sky.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.147

dhvani śuni’ saba loka haila camatkāra
śrīkṛṣṇacaitanya nāma karaha ihāra

Jayapatākā Swami: All the people were filled with wonder hearing the voice. The voice said “Give Him the name Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya”.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.148

nidrārūpā mahāmāyā devī bhagavatī
ācchādila sarvajana – channa bhela mati

Jayapatākā Swami: In the form of sleep, the goddess Māhamāyā, Bhagavatī devī covered all living entities. In this way, everyone’s intelligence had been covered.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.149

yateka karaye saba nideṁra svapane
āpane ṭhākura sabhāra karāya cetane

Jayapatākā Swami: She made everyone thus dream in sleep. But the Lord Himself, made everyone conscious.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.175

“yata jagatera tumi ‘kṛṣṇa’ bolāi
yākarāilā caitanya—kīrtana prakāśiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Throughout the universe, You have induced all the people to chant the name of Lord Kṛṣṇa, and by manifesting the saṅkīrtana movement, You have awakened the consciousness of the people.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): Since the Lord made the arrangement for chanting the names of Kṛṣṇa while introducing the materially intoxicated people of the world to Kṛṣṇa, Keśava Bhāratī awarded Him the name “Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya.”

The consciousness of people throughout the entire world of sense gratification was awakened. Previously they had been indifferent to the Supreme Lord. Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya personally awarded all living entities the qualification to hear the fact that Śrī Kṛṣṇa Himself is Śrī Caitanya.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.176

eteke tomāra nāma śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya
sarva-loka tomā' haite yāte haila dhanya”

Jayapatākā Swami: Therefore, Your name will be Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya. Because of You, everyone will be fortunate.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.150

āpanei kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa bujhāya sabhāre
‘śrīkṛṣṇacaitanya’ teñi baliye iṁhāre

Jayapatākā Swami: You are Yourself, Lord Kṛṣṇa, and You instruct everyone to chant about Lord Kṛṣṇa. So, You will be called Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.151

eteka vacana yabe daivamukhe śuni
ānandita sarvaloka kare haridhvani

Jayapatākā Swami: Therefore, hearing this statement from the divine mouth, all the people became filled with ecstasy, and shouted out, “Haribol! Haribol! Haribol!”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.177

prabhura nāma-śravaṇe caturdike jayadhvani o puṣpavṛṣṭi—
eta yadi nyāsibara balilā vacana
jaya-dhvani puṣpa-vṛṣṭi haila takhana

Jayapatākā Swami: When the best of the sannyāsīs spoke these words, everyone chanted, “Jaya! Jaya!” “All Glories! All Glories!” And flowers were raining down on them from the sky.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.178

catur-dike mahā-hari-dhvani-kolāhala
kariyā ānande bhāse vaiṣṇava-sakala

Jayapatākā Swami: In all directions, the great sound of Haridhvani, “Haribol! Haribol! Hari Hari!” filled the air. All the Vaiṣṇava devotees of the Lord were floating in transcendental happiness.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.179

bhaktagaṇera bhāratīke praṇāma o prabhura nija-nāma pāiyā santoṣa—
bhāratīre sarva bhakta karilā praṇāma
prabhu o hailā tuṣṭa labhi' nija nāma

Jayapatākā Swami: All the devotees offered their obeisances to Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja. Even the Lord felt satisfaction on receiving His sannyāsa name.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 28.180

‘śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya’ nāma haila prakāśa
daṇḍavat haiyā paḍilā saba dāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: When the holy name Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya was manifested, offering their prostrate obeisances, all the servitors of the Lord, prostrated themselves before of the Lord.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.152

śurura ājñāya prabhu sedina tathāi
gurubhakti kari’ sukhe vañcilā gosāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: On the order of His guru, spiritual master, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, stayed there that day. By showing His devotion to His guru (guru-bhakti), He happily passed that day.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.153

rajanī vaiṣṇava-mile kare saṅkīrtana
gurura saṁhati nṛtya karaye mohana

Jayapatākā Swami: When the night came, all the Vaiṣṇavas assembled and performed saṅkīrtana, congregational chanting of the holy names. Then, dancing with His guru, Lord Caitanya enchanted all the worlds!

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.154

keśavabhāratī nāce premānanda-sukhe
ṭhākura nācaye-hari bole sarvaloke

Jayapatākā Swami: Keśava Bhāratī danced in happiness, of loving ecstasy. Lord Caitanya was also dancing. And all the people present chanted, “Haribol! Haribol! Hari Hari!”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 13.155

premānande pūrṇa doṁhe pāśare āpanā
brahma-sukha alpa kari’ mānaye du’janā

Jayapatākā Swami: Filled with spiritual ecstasy of love of Kṛṣṇa, They both forgot themselves. The happiness of impersonal brāhmaṇa, was thought to be very insignificant, by the two persons.

So Lord Caitanya and His sannyāsa guru, Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja, were dancing together in spiritual bliss, spiritual ecstasy. And at that time, the happiness of impersonal brāhmaṇa, seemed very insignificant. And everyone should chant the name of Kṛṣṇa, and thus they will be most fortunate. And the highest bliss, highest ecstasy is achieved by service of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa. So, this is the special mercy of Lord Caitanya. He gives everyone love of Kṛṣṇa. His spiritual master who took sannyāsa in the impersonal disciplic succession, was a Vaiṣṇava. But by chanting with the Lord, he actually realized unlimited, spiritual, loving bliss. And at that time, the happiness of impersonal brāhmaṇa, seemed very small indeed. Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Thus ends the chapter, Keśava Bhāratī Gives the Name “Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya” to Viśvambharadeva.
