Introduction: Today we are continuing with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book, today’s chapter is entitled:

Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya Brings the Unconscious Sannyāsī to His House

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.426

sārvabhauma bhaṭṭācāryera jagannātha-darśana—

īśvara-icchāya sārvabhauma sei kale
jagannātha dekhite āchena kutūhale

Jayapatākā Swami: By the will of Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya at that time, was happily taking darśana of Lord Jagannātha.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.431

ajña paḍihārī prabhuke mārite udyata haile sārvabhaumera nivāraṇa—

ajña paḍihārī saba uṭhila mārite
āthe-vyathe sārvabhauma paḍilā pṛṣṭhete

Jayapatākā Swami: As the ignorant guards prepared to beat Lord Caitanya, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya hurriedly threw himself on to the Lord Caitanya’s back, to block the guards from beating Lord Caitanya.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): The guards are supposed to chastise those pilgrims who commit sevā-aparādha, or offenses in Deity worship. As those extremely foolish guards prepared to beat Śrī Gaurasundara for falling unconscious in ecstatic love within the temple, which they considered an offense, Sārvabhauma checked them.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.5

daivāt sārvabhaumera prabhuke darśana o āghāta haite rakṣaṇa:—

daive sārvabhauma tāṅhāke kare daraśana
paḍichā mārite teṅho kaila nivāraṇa

Translation: When Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu fell down, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya happened to see Him. When the watchman threatened to beat the Lord, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya immediately forbade him.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya understood that there was something special about Lord Caitanya so he stopped the guards from beating Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.6

sārvabhaumera vismaya :—

prabhura saundarya āra premera vikāra
dekhi’ sārvabhauma hailā vismita apāra

Translation: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya was very surprised to see the personal beauty of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, as well as the transcendental transformations wrought on His body due to love of Godhead.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya was crying in ecstasy, fell unconscious His hairs were standing on end and various ecstatic symptoms were present in His body. On seeing His personal beauty and all these symptoms Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya was surprised.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.432

sārvabhaumera vismaya o vicāra—

hṛdaye cintena sārvabhauma mahāśaya
“eta śakti mānuṣera kona kāle naya

Jayapatākā Swami: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya thought in his heart, “Such potency no human being can ever exhibit.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.433

e huṅkāra e garjana e premera dhāra
yata kichu alaukika-śaktira pracāra

Jayapatākā Swami: “Loud roaring, loud bellowing, and this current of ecstatic symptoms all these are exhibitions of transcendental potencies.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.434

ei jana hena bujhi—śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya
ei mata cinte sārvabhauma ati dhanya

Jayapatākā Swami: “This person appears to be Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya,” in this way the most fortunate, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya was thinking.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.435

sārvabhauma-nivāraṇe sarva paḍihārī
rahilena dūre sabe mahā-bhaya kari'

Jayapatākā Swami: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, he stopped all the guards who remained at a distance and they were very frightened.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.436

prabhu se haiyā āchena acetana-prāya
dekhi' mātra jagannātha-nija-priya-kāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya was almost unconscious as soon He saw the form of His beloved Lord Jagannātha.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.437

ki ānande magna hailā vaikuṇṭha-īśvara
vede o e saba tattva jānite duṣkara

Jayapatākā Swami: What loving ecstasy the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha, Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya was absorbed in are difficult even for the Vedas to understand.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.438

śrī-jagannātha o śrī-gauracandra abhinna-svarūpa—

sei prabhu gauracandra catur-vyūha-rūpe
āpane vasiyā āche siṁhāsane sukhe

Jayapatākā Swami: That Lord Gauracandra in His quadruple expansions as Lord Jagannātha and Saṅkarṣaṇa, He was happily sitting on the siṁhāsana.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (12.11.21) it is stated:

vāsudevaḥ saṅkarṣaṇaḥ
pradyumnaḥ puruṣaḥ svayam
aniruddha iti brahman
mūrti-vyūho 'bhidhīyate

“Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha are the names of the direct personal expansions of the Supreme Godhead, O brāhmaṇa Śaunaka.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.439

īśvarera acintya-līlā—

āpanei upāsaka hai' kare bhakti
ataeva ke bujhaye īśvarera śakti

Jayapatākā Swami: The Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself became the worshiper and executed devotional service. Therefore, who can understand the potencies of the Supreme Personality of Godhead? Lord Caitanya, He is also Kṛṣṇa Himself but He was engaged in devotional service of Kṛṣṇa, worshipping Himself. So, who can understand these unlimited potencies of Supreme Personality of Godhead, simultaneously He is being worshipped and the worshipper.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.439

prabhui nija-tattvera marmajña—

āpanāra tattva prabhu āpane se jāne
vede, bhāgavate ei mata se vākhāne

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya, He alone knows His own glories. This is the explanation of the Vedas and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. No one can understand the Lord except the Lord.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): Since Gaurasundara jumped on to the jewel-studded altar on which the three Deities were seated, the consideration of catur-vyūha arose. In this case Gaurasundara considered Himself a worshiper and not the object of worship as Māyāvādīs do. In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.87.41) it is stated: “Because You are unlimited, neither the lords of heaven nor even You Yourself can ever reach the end of Your glories. The countless universes, each enveloped in its shell, wander within You.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.441

jīvera uddhārārtha vedera līlā-gāna—

tathāpi ye līlā prabhu karena yakhane
tāhā kahe vede jīva-uddhāra-kāraṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: Yet the pastimes which the Supreme Personality of Godhead performs the Vedas explains or describes the purpose for delivering the conditional living entities.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.442

prabhura vaiṣṇavāveśa-līlā—

magna hailena prabhu vaiṣṇava-āveśe
bāhya dūre gela prema-sindhu-mājhe bhāse

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya became absorbed in the mood of a Vaisnava devotee of the Lord. He lost external consciousness and was floating in an ocean of ecstatic love. Since Lord Caitanya, He descended to this material world to act as His own devotee. Therefore, when He saw the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Jagannāthadeva He became overwhelmed in the loving mood of the devotee.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.443

sārvabhauma kartṛka pāṇḍuvijayera bhṛtyagaṇera sāhāyye mūrchita

prabhuke haridhvani-mukhe nijagṛhe ānayana—

āvariyā sārvabhauma āchena āpane
prabhura ānanda-mūrcchā nā haya khaṇḍane

Jayapatākā Swami: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya personally continued to guard Lord Caitanya, whose ecstatic trance remained unbroken.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.7

prabhura caitanya haite vilamba dekhiyā prabhuke nijagṛhe ānayana :—

bahu-kṣaṇe caitanya nahe, bhogera kāla haila
sārvabhauma mane tabe upāya cintila

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu remained unconscious for a long time. Meanwhile, the time for offering bhoga to Lord Jagannātha came, and the Bhaṭṭācārya tried to think of a remedy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.444

śeṣe sārvabhauma yukti karilena mane
prabhu lai' yāibāre āpana bhavane

Jayapatākā Swami: Eventually Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya decided to take Lord Caitanya to his own house.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.445

sārvabhauma bale,—“bhāi paḍihāri-gaṇa!
sabe tuli' laha ei puruṣa-ratana”

Jayapatākā Swami: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya said, “O dear brother guards, pick up and take this jewel-like personality.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.446

pāṇḍu-vijayera yata nija bhṛtya-gaṇa
sabe prabhu kole kari' karilā gamana

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Jagannātha’s personal servants, who carry the deities to their chariots during the Pāṇḍu-vijaya ceremony, then picked up Lord Caitanya and carrying Him they departed.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): As Lord Jagannātha is carried to His chariot during the Pāṇḍu-vijaya ceremony, the servants of Jagannātha picked up the unconscious Gaurasundara and brought Him to Sārvabhauma's house. They may not have understood that by carrying Lord Caitanya, they are doing the same service as carrying Lord Jagannātha to the chariot.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.447

ke bujhibe īśvarera caritra gahana
hena-rūpe sārvabhauma-mandire gamana

Jayapatākā Swami: Who can understand the grave personality of Godhead’s characteristics? In this way He was carried to Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya’s house.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.8

śiṣya paḍichā-dvārā prabhu nila vahāñā
ghare āni’ pavitra sthāne rākhila śoyāñā

Translation: While Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu was unconscious, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, with the help of the watchman and some disciples, carried Him to his home and laid Him down in a very sanctified room.

Purport: At that time, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya lived on the southern side of the Jagannātha Temple. His home was practically on the beach and was known as Mārkaṇḍeya-sarastaṭa. At present it is used as the monastery of Gaṅgāmātā.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 12.1

The performer of countless pastimes, entering Purī, went to Sārvabhauma’s house. The brāhmaṇa, suddenly seeing the sannyāsī attractive with knowledge, felt great bliss.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 12.12

Rising and offering food, water with devotion, Sārvabhauma gave him a wide seat and after offering respects, quickly and intelligently asked about him with politeness.

Jayapatākā Swami: This is obviously after he became conscious first. He was laid down in the house unconscious and then when he became conscious Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya bathed His lotus feet

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.4: When Śrī Gaurāṅga first arrived in Puruṣottama Kṣetra, He went to the house of Vāsudeva Sārvabhauma. At once that intelligent scholar rose to greet Him and fell before Him offering obeisances.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.16.147

tabe seimate prabhu calilā satvara
uttarilā vāsudeva-sārvabhauma-ghara

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya quickly walked, and He came to the house of Vāsudeva Sarvabhuama.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.16.148

sārvabhauma prabhure dekhiyā haraṣite
gṛha-vyavahāre dila āsana basite

Jayapatākā Swami: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, seeing Lord Caitanya, He felt immense joy or bliss. He offered the Lord a place to sit according to the standard of household reception. It was seen that when Lord Caitanya was taken to the house of Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, at that time He was unconscious and no symptom of life and finally Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, he placed a cotton swab under the nostril of Lord Caitanya so there was a slight movement, and He could understand that He was in deep samādhi. On that time Lord Nityananda and other devotees arrived by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa the Lord awakened then this verse is described that Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya offered Him appropriate reception.

Thus ends the chapter entitled Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya Brings the Unconscious Sannyāsī to His House
