Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya Arranges for Darśana

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 6.124: Gopīnātha Ācārya: His intention is to easily take darśana of Lord Jagannātha.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.5: Seeing Sārvabhauma, Śrī Hari addressed him in a faltering voice, “Kindly tell Me - how may I see My eternal Lord of lords, Śrī Jagannātha?”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.149

sārvabhauma dekhi’ prabhu kahila vacana
jagannātha dekhibāre utkaṇṭhita mana

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya said seeing Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, “My heart longs to see Lord Jagannātha.”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.150

kemane dekhiba āmi deva-deva-rāya
sākṣāt karite mora sambhrama-hiyāya

Jayapatākā Swami: “How will I see the master of the great demigods? My heart longs to have the personal darśana of Him.”

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.6: Sārvabhauma heard the Lord’s request, but as that renowned scholar observed intently at Gaurāṅga’s form, His lotus eyes opened wide with astonishment.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.151

e bela śuniyā sārvabhauma mahāśaya
prabhu-aṅga nirakhiye vismita-hiyāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing these words from Lord Caitanya, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya looked at Lord Caitanya’s transcendental form. Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya’s heart was amazed.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.7: Gaurāṅga’s complexion had the sublime effulgence of molten gold, like another Mount Meru. His face appeared like the moon as it generates of nectar throughout the night, and His eyes resembled lotus flowers.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.152

e tapta-kāñcana gaura sumeru-sundara
nayana-candramā mukha kare jhalamala

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga’s form was glorious like molten gold, beautiful like Mount Sumeru. His eyes were effulgent like moonlight and His face was brilliant.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.8: His nose was aristocratic, and His neck resembled a conch. His chest was broad and His arms very long. His charming crimson lips resembled budding bandhūka flowers.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.153

siṁhagrīva, kambukaṇṭha, sudīrghalocana

Jayapatākā Swami: His waist was thin like a lions, and His neck was like a conch shell. His eyes were very long reaching back almost to the ears and His arms was long reaching to His knees. His form was marked with all auspicious signs.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.9: His teeth were white like jasmine buds, and His smile defeated the radiance of limitless moons. His arms extended to His knees, and His lotus feet shone brightly.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.10: In His heart, kṛṣṇa-prema forever brightly blazed. The hairs of His body thrilled out of rapture, and the tops of His feet resembled the curved shells of tortoises. Sārvabhauma was astonished to see all this, and thought:

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.11: “Who is this illustrious male, with every sign of a great personality? It appears that He has descended from Vaikuṇṭha to play a role of divine pastimes.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.12: “Can He possibly be the original primeval personality, the reservoir of eternity, bliss and knowledge, the personified form of all rasa? Could He be the benefactor of all living beings, the original Personality of Godhead, the Iśvara Himself?”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.154

Jayapatākā Swami: Gazing at Lord Caitanya, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya was overcome with bliss. He thought: What I see here is all, very wonderful.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.155

e-rūpe mānuṣa nāhi sakala jagate
devatā-bhitare ihā nā pāri gaṇite

Jayapatākā Swami: In the entire universe there is no form like Him. Within the demigods I am not able to ascertain who He is.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.156

vaikuṇṭha-nāyaka prabhu āilā āpane
‘ei sei bhagavān’ bujhi anumāne

Jayapatākā Swami: As the Lord of Vaikunṭha, Lord Nārāyaṇa, had come personally before Me! I can guess that this person is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself.”

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.13: Thinking in this way, the wise Sārvabhauma told his younger brother, “Quickly go with this blessed soul, Śrī Caitanya, to the temple of the Lord. Let Him behold without hindrance the ultimate Supreme Person, who expands into limitless forms, and possesses sublime attributes.”

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.11.15: Hearing these wonderful nectarean words uttered by Śrī Sārvabhauma, his intelligent younger brother departed in the company of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya seeing the form of Lord Caitanya, with all His auspicious characteristics. he was convinced that this is the Supreme Personality of Godhead who has descended to the material world to enact His pastimes.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.459

sārvabhaumera lokera sahita bhaktagaṇera jagannātha-darśane gamana—

manuṣya dilena sārvabhauma sabā’-sane
calilena sabe jagannātha-daraśane

Jayapatākā Swami: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya then deputed one man to go with all of them when they departed for darśana of Lord Jagannātha.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.460

pradarśakera ukti—
ye manuṣya yāya dekhāite jagannātha

Jayapatākā Swami: The person who was deputed to take them to have darśana of Lord Jagannātha, folded his hands and appealed to them.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.461

“sthira hai’ jagannātha sabei dekhibā
pūrva-gosāñira mata keha nā karibā

Jayapatākā Swami: “Maintain your composure while seeing Lord Jagannātha. Don’t do anything like the Gosvāmī did in the past.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.462

ki-rūpa tomarā, kichu nā pāri bujhite
sthira hai’ dekha, tabe yāi dekhāite

Jayapatākā Swami: “I cannot understand what kind of persons you are. If you remain peaceful while seeing Lord Jagannātha, then I will take you.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.463

ye-rūpa tomāra karilena eka jane
jagannātha daive rahilena siṁhāsane

Jayapatākā Swami: “It was by the arrangement of providence that Lord Jagannātha remained on His siṁhāsana after what one of did. So, Lord Caitanya had approached Lord Jagannātha to embrace Him then He fell unconscious, so all the guards went to beat Him. He was saved by Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya. So, this person deputed by Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, appealed to them with folded hands, “Please don’t do anything unusual, just remain peaceful and have darśana of the Lord” I heard that when devotees see Lord Jagannātha they pay obeisances, then people say, "Oh, he must be from ISKCON."

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.464

viśeṣe vā ki kahiba ye dekhila tāna
se āchāḍe anyera ki dehe rahe prāṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: “What more can I say? Everyone who saw Him fall forcefully to the ground thought that He could not survive.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.465

eteke tomarā saba-acintya-kathana
samvariyā dekhibā, kariluṅ nivedana”

Jayapatākā Swami: “These topics are beyond my understanding. My request for all of you, that you should control yourselves while taking darśana.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.466

bhaktagaṇera pratyuttara—

śuni’ sabe hāsite lāgilā bhakta-gaṇa
`cintā nāhi’ bali’ sabe karilā gamana

Jayapatākā Swami: On hearing his words, the devotees began to laugh. They told him, “Don’t worry,” and all left.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 6.125: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya: By all means it will be so. Oh! Who is here? Call Candaneśvara (Candaneśvara is Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya’s son).

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.33

putra candaneśvara-saṅge sakalake jagannāthadarśane preraṇa:—

sārvabhauma pāṭhāila sabā darśana karite
‘candaneśvara’ nija-putra dila sabāra sāthe

Translation: The Bhaṭṭācārya then sent them all back to see Lord Jagannātha, and he asked his own son, Candaneśvara, to accompany them as a guide.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 6.126: (Candaneśvara hastily enters. He bows before the Lord, and then he bows before His father).

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.157

eteka cintiyā sārvabhauma mahājana
āpana tanuja dekhi’ kahiche vacana

Jayapatākā Swami: Thinking in this way, the saintly Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, glanced at his own son and said the following,

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 6.127: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya: O Candaneśvara, please accompany this sannyāsī. Arrange it so that every day, whenever He likes, He may gaze on the beautiful face of Lord Jagannātha and see that no one obstructs Him. Let everyone allow Him. Let no one stop Him. I have great respect for Him

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.158

satvare calaha tumi caitanya-saṁhati
sāvadhāne śunibe–ye kahe mahāmati

Jayapatākā Swami: Go Quickly with Lord Caitanya. Whatever this great soul says, hear with great attention and care.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.159

śrī-jagannātha mahāprabhu yathā āche
saṅgati sahite ihāya thobe tāra kāche

Jayapatākā Swami: Wherever Lord Jagannātha is there, staying in close association with Lord Caitanya, keep Him there.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 6.128: Candaneśvara: As my Lord orders.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 6.129: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya: Lord, let us get up.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 6.130: (Accompanied by Lord Nityānanda and the other devotees, and taking Candaneśvara with Him, Lord Caitanya exits).

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 12.5: Understanding the Lord’s desire, Sārvabhauma immediately sent him off respectfully with his son to the temple, as he desired to see Jagannātha.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.160

e bola śuniñā hṛṣṭa hailā gaurārāya
calilā ta sārvabhauma-tanuja sahāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the words, Lord Gaurārāya was delighted. He departed being accompanied by Sārvabhauma’s son. So, Lord Caitanya had a great desire to see Lord Jagannātha again and again. and that person that Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya sent with Him was His own son. So we will continue tomorrow with reading about the “Sacred Darśana of Lord Caitanya with the Lord Jagannātha Deity.
