Introduction: Today we are continuing with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book, second part of the chapter entitled:

Lord Caitanya Resolves to See Jagannātha From the Side of the Garuḍa-stambha (PART 2)

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.60

tomāra saṅga lāgi’ mora ihāṅ āgamana
sarva-prakāre karibe āmāya pālana

Translation: “I have come here only to associate with you, and I am now taking shelter of you. Will you kindly maintain Me in all respects?”

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.61

prabhura kṛtajñatā jñāpana:—

āji ye haila āmāra baḍa-i vipatti
tāhā haite kaile tumi āmāra avyāhati”

Translation: “The incident that happened today was a great obstacle for Me, but you have kindly relieved Me of it.”

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.62

bhaṭṭācāryera prabhu prati snehopadeśa:—

bhaṭṭācārya kahe,—ekale tumi nā yāiha darśane
āmāra saṅge yābe, kimvā āmāra loka-sane

Translation: The Bhaṭṭācārya replied, “Do not go alone to see the Deity at the Jagannātha temple. It is better that You go with me or my men.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya has extended his help to Lord Caitanya and He advised Lord Caitanya not to have darśana of Lord Jagannātha Deity alone. Since He may fall in ecstasy or do something unexpected which would put him in great danger. So in this way Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya was taking responsibility for Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.63

prabhura sammatisūcaka ukti:—

prabhu kahe,—’mandira bhitare nā yāiba
garuḍera pāśe rahi’ darśana kariba’

Translation: The Lord said, “I shall never enter the temple but shall always view the Lord from the side of the Garuḍa-stambha.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this was the culture of Lord Caitanya, to have darśana of Lord Jagannātha Baladeva and Subhadrā Deity from the Garuḍa-stambha started. There in the Garuḍa-stambha are the finger prints of Lord Caitanya as He was holding the Garuḍa-stambha, the stone of the stambha melted where His fingers were, He had such intense love for Lord Jagannātha.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.487

prabhura garuḍa-stambhera paścāte thākiyā jagannātha-darśane pratijñā—

āji haite āmi ei bali daḍāiyā
jagannātha dekhibāṅa bāhire thākiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: “From today onwards, I will take darśana of Lord Jagannātha staying outside of the temple room.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.488

abhyantare āra āmi praveśa nahiba
garuḍera pāche rahi' īśvara dekhiba

Jayapatākā Swami: “I shall not enter the temple. I will see Lord Jagannātha while standing next to Garuḍa-stambha.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.489

bhāgye āmi āji nā dhariluṅ Jagannātha
tabe ta' saṅkaṭa āji haita āmā'ta”

Jayapatākā Swami: “It was my good fortunate that I didn’t grab Lord Jagannātha today. If I had done so, from today I would be in great trouble.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.490

nityānandera prabhuke snānārtha anurodha—

nityānanda bale,—“baḍa eḍāile bhāla
velā nāhi ebe, snāna karaha sakāla”

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda then said, “It’s good that You avoided that calamity. Now it is late. Let us all go and take a bath.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.491

nityānanda-prāṇa gauracandra—

prabhu bale,—“nityānanda, samvariyā more
ei āmi deha samarpilāṅa tomāre”

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya said, “Lord Nityānanda, You should protect Me. I am surrendering My body to You.” So, Lord Nityānanda was assigned the responsibility of protecting Lord Caitanya body. Since Lord Caitanya would often go out of the external consciousness and He would not be aware of what’s going on so He assigned Lord Nityānanda the responsibility of protecting His body.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.64

bhagnīpatike prabhura tattvā-vadhāna-janya anurodha :—

gopīnāthācāryake kahe sārvabhauma
‘tumi gosāñire lañā karāiha daraśana

Translation: Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya then told Gopīnātha Ācārya, “Take Gosvāmījī and show Him Lord Jagannātha.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.65

āmāra mātṛ-svasā-gṛha—nirjana sthāna
tāhāṅ vāsā deha, kara sarva samādhāna’

Translation: “Also, the apartment belonging to my maternal aunt is in a very solitary place. Make all arrangements for Him to stay there.”

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.66

gopīnātha prabhu lañā tāhāṅ vāsā dila
jala, jala-pātrādika sarva samādhāna kaila

Translation: Thus, Gopīnātha Ācārya took Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu to His residential quarters and showed Him where to find water, tubs and waterpots. Indeed, he arranged everything.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 6.67

gopīnāthera prabhuke jagannātha-sevā-pradarśana :—

āra dina gopīnātha prabhu sthāne giyā
śayyotthāna daraśana karāila lañā

Translation: The next day Gopīnātha Ācārya took Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu to see the early rising of Lord Jagannātha.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Gopīnātha Ācārya was assigned by Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya with the responsibility of taking Lord Caitanya to His living quarters and to have darśana of Lord Jagannātha and in this way Lord Caitanya would have darśana from the Garuḍa-stambha and thus He had the darśana of Lord Jagannātha from outside the temple.

Thus, ends the chapter entitled, Lord Caitanya Resolves to See Jagannātha From the Side of the Garuḍa-stambha.

When Lord Caitanya realized, if He would go and grab Lord Jagannātha, then the priest would have taken great exception so by Lords mercy He fell unconscious before. So, in order to respect He decided not to enter the temple, so that He would see Lord Jagannātha from outside the temple from the Garuḍa-stambha.
