Giving the Title of Bhāgavatācārya to Raghunātha

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.110

prabhura varāha-nagare janaika brāhmaṇa-gṛhe āgamana—
tabe prabhu āilena varāha-nagare
mahābhāgyavanta eka brāhmaṇera ghare

Jayapatākā Swami: Thereafter Lord Caitanya went to Varāha-nagara and stayed in the house of one of the most fortunate brāhmaṇa (Śrī Raghunātha Bhāgavata Ācārya).

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.111

bhāgavate suśikṣita viprera prabhu-darśane bhāgavata-pāṭha—
sei vipra baḍa suśikṣita bhāgavate
prabhu dekhi’ bhāgavata lāgilā paḍite

Jayapatākā Swami: That brāhmaṇa was expert in reciting the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, so on seeing Lord Caitanya he began to recite the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.112

śuniyā tāhāna bhakti-yogera paṭhana
āviṣṭa hailā gauracandra nārāyaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: When Lord Gauracandra Nārāyaṇa heard his recitation of verses glorifying devotional service, bhakti-yoga, Lord Caitanya became absorbed in ecstasy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.113

śrī-gauraharira bhāvāveśe nṛtya, punaḥ punaḥ bhūtale patana—
‘bala bala’ bale prabhu śrī-gaurāṅga-rāya
huṅkāra garjana prabhu karaye sadāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga-rāya said, “Read on! Read on!” repeatedly. He loudly roared, and Lord Gaurāṅga repeatedly exclaimed.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.114

sei vipra paḍe parānande magna haiyā
prabhu o karena nṛtya bāhya pāsariyā

Jayapatākā Swami: That brāhmaṇa as he recited Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, he became absorbed in transcendental ecstasy. Lord Caitanya lost His external consciousness and He danced in ecstasy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.115

bhaktira mahimā-śloka śunite śunite
punaḥ punaḥāchāḍa paḍena pṛthivīte

Jayapatākā Swami: The ślokas which were glorifying devotional service, Lord Caitanya was hearing again and again. Then He repeatedly fell to the ground in ecstasy. Lord Caitanya by hearing the Bhāgavatam, especially the verses glorifying bhakti-yoga or devotional service He became ecstatic, lost His external consciousness, sometimes He fell to the ground. So, He was very inspired, very ecstatic by hearing this recitation of the Bhāgavatam.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.116

hena se karena prabhu premera prakāśa
āchāḍa dekhite sarva-loke pāya trāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya manifested wonderful ecstatic love and then all the people became frightened seeing Him fall forcefully to the ground.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.117

rātri tina prahara paryanta bhāgavata-śravaṇe nṛtya—
ei mata rātri tina-prahara-avadhi
bhāgavata śuniyā nācilā guṇa-nidhi

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way for nine hours during the night, Lord Caitanya was hearing the Bhāgavatam and dancing in ecstasy, ocean of good qualities.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.118

vāhya pāiyā viprake āliṅgana o praśaṁsā—
bāhya pāi’ vasilena śrī-śacīnandana
santoṣe dvijere karilena āliṅgana

Jayapatākā Swami: Thereafter Lord Śrī Śacīnandana regained His external consciousness and sat down being totally satisfied. He embraced happily that brāhmaṇa. After hearing the brāhmaṇa, non-stop all night reciting the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, He sat and then He embraced the brāhmaṇa.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.119

prabhu bale,—“bhāgavata e-mata paḍite
kabhu nāhi śuni āra kāharo mukhete

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya said, “I have never heard such a nice explanation of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam from anyone!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.120

prabhura vipake ‘bhāgavatācārya’ padavī-pradāna—
eteke tomāra nāma ‘bhāgavatācārya’
ihā vinā āra kona nā kariha kārya”

Jayapatākā Swami: “From this time Your name will be Bhāgavata Ācārya. Your only duty is to recite Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.121

vipra-prati prabhura padavī yogya śuni’
sabe karilena mahā-hari-hari-dhvani

Jayapatākā Swami: When everyone heard the suitable name that Lord Caitanya gave the brāhmaṇa, they all chanted loudly the name of Hari. Hari Bol! Hari Bol! So everyone was very pleased to hear Lord Caitanya giving the title Bhāgavata Ācārya and they all in great bliss chanted Hari Bol! Hari Bol!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 5.122

ei mata prati-grāme grāme gaṅgā-tīre
rahiyā rahiyā prabhu bhaktera mandire

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way through the various villages along the bank of the Ganges, Lord Caitanya stayed in the houses and temples of various devotees. So, from Pānihāṭi, the Lord went along the Ganges side and he visited different houses of the devotees and different temples and in this way He proceeded North.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Giving the Title of Bhāgavatācārya to Raghunātha
Under the Section: The Lord’s Attempt to Go to Vṛndāvana

Jayapatākā Swami: We see how Lord Caitanya, He was expanding His pastimes, actually I don't know if Varāhanagar is south or north of Pānihāṭi, that could be ascertained, since Caitanya-bhāgavata is not always chronologically organized. But anyway even to this day there is a temple where this brāhmaṇa was staying the Bhāgavata Ācārya, and that temple has a large library. So they still remember Lord Caitanya going there and meeting the brāhmaṇa, Bhāgavata Ācārya.

Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura writes in his Anubhāṣya, “In the Gaura-gaṇoddeśa-dīpikā (203) it is said, ‘Bhāgavata Ācārya compiled a book entitled Kṛṣṇa-prema-taraṅgiṇī, and he was the most beloved devotee of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu.’ When Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu visited Varāhanagara, now a suburb of Calcutta, He stayed in the house of a most fortunate brāhmaṇa who was a very learned scholar in Bhāgavata literature.

(—Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi 10.113 purport by Śrīla Prabhupāda)
