Lord’s Mercy Towards Murāri Gupta (Part 1)

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.7

mahāprabhura murāriguptake nija līlāmaya vaicitra o tadīya abhīṣṭa-devatā saparikara śrīrāmacandrera rūpa-pradarśana; murārira mūrchā—

murārire ājñā haila,—“mora rūpa dekha”
murāri dekhaye raghunātha parateka

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga, He ordered Murāri Gupta, “Behold My form!” and then He showed Murāri Gupta, His form as Lord Rāmacandra.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.8

dūrva-dala-śyāma dekhe sei viśvambhara
vīrāsane vasiyāche mahā-dhanur-dhara

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvambhara Prabhu showed His form, dark like the fresh grass. He took the posture of vīrāsana, as a powerful archer.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.9

jānakī-lakṣmaṇa dekhe vāmete, dakṣiṇe
caudike karaye stuti vānarendra-gaṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: He saw Jānakī, Sītā to the Lord’s left and Lakṣmaṇa to His right. And in all directions were the leaders of the monkeys were offering prayers.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.10

āpana prakṛti vāse ye hena vānara
sakṛt dekhiyā mūrchā pāila vaidya-vara

Jayapatākā Swami: Murāri Gupta, the best of the physicians, he realized his own nature was also to be one of the monkeys. Seeing the Lord face-to-face, Murāri Gupta lost his consciousness.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.12

The thief of Sītā burnt your tail?”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.13

tui tāra purī puḍi’ kaili vaṁśa-kṣaya
sei prabhu āmi, tore dila paricaya

Jayapatākā Swami: You burnt his entire city and destroyed his dynasty. I am that Lord. I have revealed Myself to you. So he burnt the Śrī Laṅka nagar. It means that Murāri Gupta was Hanumān. And he had participated in the Lord’s līlā as Hanumān, Rāma-līlā. And now he was in the Caitanya-līlā as Murāri Gupta! Haribol!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.14

uṭha uṭha murāri, āmāra tumi prāṇa
āmi—sei rāghavendra, tumi—hanumān

Jayapatākā Swami: “Rise up, rise up, Murāri! You are My life! I am that Rāmacandra and you are Hanumān!”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.15

sumitrā-nandana dekha tomāra jīvana
yā’re jīyāile āni’ se gandamādana

Jayapatākā Swami: “See your life and soul, the son of mother Sumitrā. You brought the Gandamādana hill to revive His life.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.16

jānakīra caraṇe karaha namaskāra
yā’ra duḥkha dekhi’, tumi kāndilā apāra”

Jayapatākā Swami: You offered your obeisances at the lotus feet of Sītā, Jānakī. Seeing Her distress, you cried profusely.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.17

caitanyera vākye gupta caitanya pāilā
dekhiyā sakala preme kāndite lāgilā

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing Lord Caitanya’s words, Murāri Gupta regained his consciousness. Seeing the Lord’s manifestation, he began to cry in love. So, Murāri Gupta was actually Hanumān. And seeing Lord Caitanya manifesting as Rāghavendra or Rāmacandra form, he had fainted in ecstasy. Hearing the words of Lord Caitanya, he regained his consciousness, and then seeing the Lord in that Rāmacandra form, he started to cry profusely. Lord Caitanya was enjoying these unlimited pastimes with His devotees, who had come from different pastimes, during His previous incarnations. This shows how Lord Caitanya is actually Kṛṣṇa and all the avatāras are not different. So Lord Kṛṣṇa comes as Rāma, He comes as different avatāras. So this is being shown by Lord Caitanya to Murāri Gupta.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.18

guptera krandane bhaktagaṇera cittera ārdrabhāva—

śuṣka kāṣṭha drave śuni’ guptera krandana
viśeṣe dravilā saba bhāgavata-gaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Murāri Gupta’s crying was such that even dry wood would melt! And when the pure devotees present heard the crying of Murāri Gupta, their hearts were especially melted!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.19

murārike vara-grahaṇārtha prabhura ādeśa o murārira nitya bhagavadbhaktasaṅga o bhagavad dāsya prārthanā—

punar api murārire bale viśvambhara
“ye tomāra abhimata, māgi laha vara”

Jayapatākā Swami: So again, Viśvambhara said to Murāri Gupta, “Whatever you desire, ask a benediction from Me.” So since Lord Caitanya, He is in the mood of Rāmacandra avatāra, the Lord’s līlā is, He gives benedictions. So, naturally He asked Murāri Gupta, the Hanumān avatāra to ask for some benediction.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.20

murāri balaye,—“prabhu āra nāhi cāṅa
hena kara prabhu yena tora guṇa gāṅa

Jayapatākā Swami: Murāri replied, “Oh, Lord, I do not want anything else! Simply allow me, oh Lord, to sing Your glories!”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.21

ye-te ṭhāṅi prabhu kene janma nāhi mora
tathāi tathāi yena smṛti haya tora

Jayapatākā Swami: “Oh my Lord, Wherever I take birth again, doesn’t matter where I take birth, but wherever I take birth, let me always remember You!”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.22

janma janma tomāra ye saba prabhu—dāsa
tā sabāra saṅge yena haya mora vāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: “Birth after birth, let me reside in the association of Your servants! May my residence be in their association.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.23

tumi prabhu, muñi dāsa—ihā nāhi yathāhena
satya kara prabhu, nā pheliha tathā

Jayapatākā Swami: “You are My Lord; I am Your servant! Do not put me in any condition in which this is not true. Make this true in all conditions, Lord! Don’t throw me away!”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.24

sapārṣade tumi yathā kara avatāra
tathāi tathāi dāsa haiba tomāra”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Wherever You and Your associates descend, or incarnate, may I always remain Your servant, in such incarnations. So Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura is summing up what Murāri stated:

As Mahāprabhu was about to award Murāri a benediction, Murāri said, “I have no desire other than Your service, birth after birth. May I not forget You and fall into some other state in any lifetime. May I be able to serve You in every lifetime. May my intelligence not be diverted from Your service.”

So this is the desire of the pure devotee, they always want to be associate with the Lord and His devotees. They don’t necessarily want to be freed from and go back to the spiritual world. And if they don’t have the service of the Lord, they want rather want always be in the service of the Lord even if that means being the material world.

So The great devotee Hanumān prayed:

“I do not wish to take liberation or to merge in the Brahman effulgence, where the conception of being a servant of the Lord is completely lost.”

So the same prayer given in the fourth verse of Śīkṣāṣṭaka.

In the Viṣṇu Purāṇa it is said: “O my Lord, even if I wander throughout the universe in thousands of different species of life, may I always have unflinching devotion to You.”

So you can see how the pure devotees are so attached to Kṛṣṇa and to Lord Caitanya. So that’s the mood that we should be in, and we want to serve the Lord in every birth. Haribol!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.25

murārike prabhura vara dāna evaṃ bhaktagaṇera jayadhvani—

prabhu bale,—“satya satya ei vara dila”
mahā mahā jaya-dhvani tata-kṣaṇe haila

Jayapatākā Swami: So then Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, “I certainly grant you this benediction!” And all the devotees present, they started to make a tumultuous vibration of jaya-dhvani, arose there!

So, here we have experienced a great consciousness of devotion that Murāri Gupta had. We heard previously that even if one is a great sinner, Lord Caitanya agrees to deliver him. But He says that if one offends a Vaiṣṇava, He won’t deliver him. We see how great a Vaiṣṇava is! And why the Vaiṣṇava is so dear to the Lord! Because the Vaiṣṇava has no other purpose in life, but to serve the Lord, and naturally the Lord reciprocates. He is very touched by such devotion! We see that in this world, sons and daughters, they generally don’t generally approach the parents, “I want to serve you!” Generally, they say, “Give me this, give me that! I want my allowance. I want to go to the cinema” or something! But here, we see how the pure devotees, the only thing they want to always serve the Lord!

We will continue reading the glories of Murāri Gupta tomorrow. There is a Latin American meeting at 7.30 pm.
