Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

Introduction: Haribol! We will try to be here every night at 8 so that we can finish at 9 and that you can attend maṅgala-ārati. What language do the Russians, Spanish, etc. listen to?

The result of hearing Lord Caitanya’s manifestation as Varāhadeva

Haribol!

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.2.27

aparedyuḥ paṇḍitasya
śrīvāsasya pure vasan
vyākhyāṁ cakāra ślokasya
vakṣyamānasya tac chṛṇu

On the following day, while Gaura was staying in the home of Śrīvāsa Paṇita, He recited a verse and then elucidated upon it. Please hear that.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.122½-123

āra-dine śrīnivāsapaṇḍitera ghare

saba nijagaṇa yata saṃhati kariyā
basiyā kahaye nija-prema prakāśiyā

Guru Mahārāja: In the following day while sitting in Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita’s house with all His intimate associates sitting with them , Lord Caitanya expressed or manifested His ecstatic love.

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.124

harihari bali’ ḍāke antare kautuka
nija jane kahe-śuna śuna aparūpa

Guru Mahārāja: with a joyful heart he called out Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari! With His own associates and devotees, he spoke, “Listen, listen to these wonderful words.

 Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.125

sei rādhākṛṣṇa pābe kalite yemate
se kathā kahie torā śuna ekacite

Guru Mahārāja: How you will get Rādhā Kṛṣṇa in the age of Kali, I will tell you I speak that, listen with one-pointed attention.

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.126

ihā bali nāradīya paḍhila eka śloka
ihāra marma-vyākhyā nāhi jāne loka

Guru Mahārāja: At the Nāradīya Purāṇa, there is one verse, common people even the Paṇḍitas, they don’t understand what this actually means, the actual purport of this verse.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.2.28 (&)
Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.1.128

harer nāma harer nāma harer nāmaiva kevalam
kalau nāsty eva nāsty eva nāsty eva gatir anyathā

Translation: In this Age of Kali there is no other means, no other means, no other means to realize the Lord than chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name of Lord Hari.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.2.29

“nā” pumān ādi-puruṣaḥ kalāv asty eva rūpavān
nāma-svarūpiṇaṁ taṁ tu jānīhi sa tu “kevalam”

The word “nā” means a person and indicates Śrī Hari, the original person, who is present in the age of Kali possessing a form. Know Him to be the form of His holy name. This is the intended meaning of the word “kevalam”

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.128

nāmarūpī, nāma—eka ādi ye purukha
kali mūrtimanta āche-nā jāne murukha

Guru Mahārāja: So, the Lord and His name they are one, The Lord the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His holy name are one. In Kali the form of Lord is manifested but the foolish people doesn’t understand that the Lord is present in the form of His holy name

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.129

nāmarūpī bhagavān jānibe kevala
dvidhā ghucāite vyāsa bole tin-bāra

Guru Mahārāja: The Supreme Personality of Godhead is identical with the His holy name, that is indicated by the word “kevalam”, in order to dispel any doubts Vyāsadevā stated this three times.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.2.30

vāra-trayaṁ “harer nāma ” dṛḍhārthaṁ sarva-dehinām
“eva”-kāraś ca jīvānāṁ pāpānāṁ nāśa-hetave

Translation: The reason for repeating thrice the words ‘harer nāma’ is to establish conclusively that only the names of Hari award actual benefit to all embodied beings (karmī, jṣānī, yogi, bhakta etc.). The word ‘eva’ (also three times) to emphasize that the Lord's name destroys the sins of all living beings.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.130-131

tinabāra bahi āra āche ekabāra
durāśaya pāpī jīva jana bujhābāra

harināmamātre haya kaivalya tāhāra
kevala—kaivalya artha jānibe vicāra

Guru Mahārāja: one another meaning of the word “kevalam” is kaivalya, liberation. By chanting the Holy name one also achieves liberation. He mentioned it three times so that it can be understood by the conditioned souls. Only in the age of kali by the process of chanting the holy names, one achieves liberation. If you understand this that’s why Vyāsadevā repeated this three times.

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.132

nāmamātra nāmābhāsa spaṣṭārtha ihāra
kaivalya se mukhya haya śāstraparacāra

Guru Mahārāja: So by saying only by chanting the holy names its also nāmābhāsa or the accidental chanting of the holy name. By saying kaivalya, means that even by nāmābhāsa or the accidental chanting of the holy name one can achieve liberation. This is taught in the śāstras.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.2.31-32

sarva-tattva-prakāśārthaṁ “kevalaṁ” manyate ca hi
prārabdha-karma-nirvāṇaṁ kathyate’dvaita-vādibhiḥ
bhaved iti ca bodhārthaṁ kaivalyaṁ kevalaṁ smṛtam
kṛṣṇa-prema-rasāsvāda-prāpakaṁ karuṇā-mayam

Translation: To illuminate all truths, ‘kevalam’ is to be considered. The cessation of prārabdha-karma as stated by the advaita-vādis happens (even by nāmābhāsa) is understood by Kaivalya in kevalam. The holy name is full of mercy and causes one to relish the mellows of prema.

Haribol! Haribol

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.133

nāmābhāse mokṣa haya satya śāstravāṇī
nāmodaya premānanda purāṇe bākhāni

Guru Mahārāja: By chanting the nāmābhāsa or the accidental chanting of the holy name, one achieves liberation. This is the version confirmed by the Vedic scriptures. When one chants the holy name purely, then one attains ecstatic spiritual love of Kṛṣṇa, this, the Purāṇas explain.

 Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.2.33

tat-svarūpaṁ harer nāma yo’nyad eva vadet pumān
tasya nāsty eva nāsty eva gatir ity avadat svayam

Translation: The name of Hari is His original form. If someone should state otherwise, then Veda Vyāsa has personally said three times, ‘There is no other way, there is no other way, there is no other way for spiritual perfection’.

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.134

ihā bahi āna deva māne yei jana
tāra gati nāhi—tinabāra e vacana

Guru Mahārāja: So, if someone in spite of hearing this verse, they pursue some other path, then Vyāsadevā said three times in this verse, there is no other way, there is no other way, there is no other way.

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.135

go-gopī-gopāla-saṅge dhyāna harināma
jānibe e saba artha vedera pramāṇa

Guru Mahārāja: The cows, the gopīs, the gopās, they are all surrounding Lord Kṛṣṇa, Gopāla, and chanting the holy name, Harināma, is the same as meditating on this form of Kṛṣṇa, surrounded by His cows, gopis and gopas, in the holy land of Vṛndāvana. All these meanings are evident in the Vedic literatures.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.2.34

ity asau śūkaro brūte sarva-deva-mayaḥ pumān
ity uktvā nartanaṁ cakre kīrtanaṁ ca viśeṣataḥ

Translation: So spoke the Lord in His form of the boar, the personification of all the devas. Having spoken thus, He began to dance ecstatically in the kīrtana!

Haribol! Haribol!

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.136

eteka balila gaura varāha-āveśe
nāmasaṅkīrtana kare nāce premāveśe

Guru Mahārāja: Thus spoke Lord Gaurāṅga in the form of Varāhadeva, the Boar incarnation. He performed nāma-sankīrtana, the congregational chanting of the holy name and danced in loving ecstasy. Haribol! Haribol!

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.2.35

etad yaḥ śṛṇuyān nityaṁ kīrtayed vā samāhitaḥ
harau prema bhavet tasya vipāpmā ca bhaved dhruvam

Translation: One who constantly hears or recites these narrations with fixed attention attains love for Śrī Hari and is certainly freed from sin.

Guru Mahārāja: So, who wants love of Kṛṣṇa? Who wants to be freed from sin? Who would like to be freed from sin? So you get that simply by reciting or hearing or remembering these narrations with fixed attention, certainly your love for Śrī Hari and certainly you are freed from sin. Hari bol!

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.137

ye śunaye gauraguṇa nadīyāvihāra
abilambe kṛṣṇaprema upaje tāhāra

Guru Mahārāja: So who hears the pastimes, the qualities of Lord Gaurāṅga, as He enjoyed His pastimes in Nadīa, he quickly awakens pure love of Kṛṣṇa!

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.2.36

śrīmac-caitanya-pādābje prabhu-buddhir dṛḍhā bhavet
ante caitanya-devasya smṛtir bhavati śāśvatī

The intelligence that Śrī Caitanya's lotus feet is one’s Lord becomes firm and at the end of life the memory of Śrī Caitanya-deva becomes constant.

Haribol!

Caitanya  Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.138

daśane dhariyā tṛṇa kahaye locana
gaurapada binu mora anya nāhi dhana

Guru Mahārāja: Holding a straw between my teeth, I, Locana dāsa Ṭhākura say that I do not have any other treasure than the lotus feet of Lord Gaurāṅga!

Thus ends the chapter, The Result of Hearing Lord Caitanya’s manifestation as Varāhadeva.

Haribol! Haribol! Haribol!

Questions?

Guru Mahārāja: If you want to get love of Kṛṣṇa, chant the holy names.

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare, Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare!

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Question: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahārāja: Thank you for revealing the Lord’s holy name is nondifferent from Lord’s form with associates by Caitanya translations. Why is nāma, nāma prabhu mentioned separately. Why nāma prabhu is mentioned separately?

Guru Mahārāja: In the material world we think, we realize there is a difference between the word and the object. For instance, say that we are thirsty, you say, water, water, water, water! Don’t quench your thirst, you need to drink the water. But if want Kṛṣṇa, you chant His name, you actually achieve Kṛṣṇa. There is no difference from Kṛṣṇa and His name. Water, water! Ha! Ha! I am showing you! See, there is a difference, that we are thirsty, we have to drink water. If we want Kṛṣṇa, we can chant Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare, Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare! Just like Locana dāsa Ṭhākura said that his only treasure is the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya, Gaura-pāda.

Question: Does attending mangala-ārati in person and attending online gives one the same benefit?

Guru Mahārāja: Ha! Ha! It would depend how much concentration you have and if you can’t attend in person for some reason, then the Lord may give you His special mercy. You have heard the Lord is all merciful? If you can attend it is very nice. I am not able to say this whether one gets same benefit by watching, but if u can’t attend then watch, certainly there is benefit.

(Devotees were introduced to Guru Mahārāja after this.)

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

Question: Dear Guru Mahārāja, Please accept my respectful obeisances, All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda! (Guru Mahārāja: I accept your obeisances!) Do you recommend worship of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa deities at home or simply Jagannātha and Gaura-Nitāi deities?

Guru Mahārāja: It depends, how strict you are. Nitāi Gaura, Jagannātha, Baladeva Subhadrā are a bit more merciful and tolerant. Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, Rādhārāṇī doesn’t tolerate any inattention to serving Kṛṣṇa. So one has to be very careful in worshipping Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. So I do not recommend that unless one is very strict, they should worship Nitāi Gaura, Jagannātha Baladeva Subhadrā .

Question: It is said here that by chanting the holy name once, one is liberated. Then as devotees who are chanting, are we already liberated from karma, reaction? … Nanda priyaNivedita devi dasi

Guru Mahārāja: If you chant the holy name, even accidentally as nāmābhāsa, then we get liberation. But we actually want Kṛṣṇa Prema or pure ecstatic love of Kṛṣṇa. So, that you get by chanting the offenseless name. Some offense is to chant is a sin on the strength of chanting. So if one thinks that I am liberated, I can sin, then that counteracts the mercy of the holy name. We should avoid sin and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, we will be guaranteed to achieve the mercy of the Lord. We should try to avoid the ten offenses to the holy name. If someone doesn’t know what the offences are doesn’t commit any offenses, just accidentally they chant the holy name. Just like Ajāmila, he was calling his son Nārāyaṇa come here! Nārāyaṇa eat with me! Nārāyaṇa go for a walk with me. Nārāyaṇa! By chanting Nārāyaṇa again and again, he got mercy. He wasn’t particularly sinning on the strength of chanting. He was sinning but he wasn’t thinking that by chanting I will get rid of the sins. He was chanting his son’s name. So that is what we call nāmābhāsa. So that way he was liberated. But we should avoid sinning on the strength of chanting, or committing any other offense. If we do that, they we get freed from the karmic reaction. One more question?

Question: In Navadvīpa we heard about Narasiṁhadeva and Varāhadeva pastimes. Any other incarnation, pastimes, please tell us.

Guru Mahārāja: There is also Gaurāṅga, and Advaita and Nityānanda. But there are various pastimes of the Lord. Many pastimes of the devotees of the Lord. Like Surabhī Kunja, Śiva, in the Haṁsa-vāhana. Also, Lord Brahmā in the Puskara-tīrtha. Like that Rādhārāṇī in Ritudvīpa. Lord Rāma in Modadrumadvīpa and Kṛṣṇa in the tip of (I don’t know if it is) in the beginning of Ritudvīpa or end of Koladvīpa. But there the king of Suvarna-vihār, he had darśana of Kṛṣṇa, Lord Caitanya a līlā was there. Like that, different avatars like in the Sīmantadvīpa, apart from Jagannātha Baladeva Subhadrā, Balarāma came there and He defeated the Māyāsura. So, like that most of the avatāras, they had some connection with Navadvīpa dhāma. Hare Kṛṣṇa!
