23rd FEB, 2017 Çrémad Bhägavatam.7.10.13 - Sri Mäyäpur Dham, India

The following is a class given by His Holiness Jayapataka Swami Maharaj, on February 23rd, 2017, in Sridham Mäyäpur, India. The class was given with English repetition.

Gurumaharaj:

mükaà karoti väcälaà

paìguà laìghayate girim

yat-kåpä tam ahaà vande

çré-guruà déna-täraëam

paramananda madhavam

Hari Om Tatsat

So now Nrsinghadev gave His blessings to Prahläda Maharaj. Today is the first day of the kirtal mela. Prahläda maharaj taught the demon colleagues of his at school to chant the Hare Krsna mahamantra. This mantra was used by Prahläda, and he chanted it all the time.

Nrsinghadev, our Lord is very special, most special. He is the most everything. So when He became angry He was the supreme anger. Even Lord Brahma, Laxmi were not able to approach Him, He was so angry, He was so angry, I mean He was more angry than anyone had ever seen before. So then they sent Prahläda ahead. They said, “Because of your father He is angry. So it’s your fault.” (laugh). He was a child, he said, “Ok, it’s my fault.”, so he went ahead, and then Nrsinghad seeing the boy offering his obeisance’s, He became naturally very compassionate.

The parents love to see their children submissive. Actually I was in Bombay I was asked to mediate between the school and the temple many decades ago. The parents, “We are so grateful. You know what it is like. Our children come back from school and touch our feet. They are so grateful, they say, “our parents have given us Krsna Consciousness. We will do anything to keep the school open, if it needs destroy you, we will do anything, this is the best school in the world, you can’t close it.”… (inaudible) they are very appreciative.

So Nrsinghadev, He is the original father. So He was very grateful that this little boy is offering Him respect. So in this verse He blessed him.

Because this world is a very dangerous world. In the Kirtan Mela, we are reminded of the first verse of the Sikshastakam where Lord Caitanya said, “ceto-darpaëa-märjanam - the consciousness, the mirror of the consciousness is clean, is cleansed.”

All those mental states like stress, depression, anxiety, love, greed, anger, all those thing are used for wrong purpose. They are all wiped clean. ceto-darpaëa-märjanam, one becomes peaceful, cleansed.

bhava-mahä-dävägni-nirväpaëam- In South California we see on the T.V sometimes, that they have this forest fires. They burn down houses… So this material world is compared to a forest fire, because here, just like in the forest fire, the animals are running, “which way to go? Where to go? Where is freedom? Fire here, Fire there, Fire everywhere, where to go? Ah… Ah…” We are in the world of birth and death. Where to go? Everywhere some anxiety, some crisis. Now you may be in the holy dham, in a peaceful place, but recently one disciple of … devotee in ..(inaudible), his son, was not yet a devotee, partly. He had some pancreas problem and his whole body became infected. So the doctor said, “You have no hope, you will die.” The son was seven or eight years old, he dried of draught. Recently this young man, devotee, suddenly passed away in the ocean.

This is happening in Siliguri, one of our life members, his son was driving his motorcycle, got with an accident with a lorry, died. So this world is a very dangerous place, place of birth and death.

I was in the I.C.U in a hospital, there were three patients screaming in the I.C.U. One was saying, “mama, mama, o mother, mother, I have such pain.”, and one was saying, “Baba, baba, father, father, I have such pain.”, one was just screaming, ah… ah… All three died that night, very dangerous place, this material world, but this chanting of the holy name, bhava-mahä-dävägni-nirväpaëam, it can end the cycle of birth and death, and take one back to the spiritual world, and free you from the forest fire of the material illusion.

çreyaù-kairava-candrikä-vitaraëaà - it gives the benediction of moonlight. Sreya… Sreya means auspicious benediction. In this material world, there are sreya and preya. Preya like Prahlad, the example here, that you do auspicious things. Therefore you neutralize your inauspicious activities. The preya is the immediate sense gratification, sometimes pious, sometimes impious. When such a situation that sometimes we are obliged to do preya, you don’t have to, but such is the material world.

Sreya means auspicious activity. So this chanting is the supreme auspicious activity, and by doing that all good fortune is on the person.

çreyaù-kairava-candrikä-vitaraëaà, simply giving good fortune to everybody. That’s why as many hours you can spend in the kirtan mela it’s good. I was watching from T.V upstairs, they have a hotline in my room, I see all of you in the temple, and I see the deities. I heard how Bhakti Purusottam Swami, he spoke of the coming of Lord Caitanya, and then he spoke how the son of Sachi came and Sachi Nandan Swami came to give us the Kirtan mela and other things, and others spoke.

So, vidyä-vadhü-jévanam, a life of spiritual knowledge. We all to read the books, that Prabhupäda  spent so much time writing. I saw 12 midnight, he would get up and start writing. He would have the Dictaphone, but when we read the book we don’t understand it sometimes, and then people would say, “I don’t understand, but by the chanting of Hare Krsna He can understand what the books say.” So it’s very important to chant Hare Krsna.

Lord Caitanya came to give us this chanting, and He thought how to deliver all the souls. That’s why Prabhupäda  gave us the song, “parama koruëa, pahü dui jana

nitäi gauracandra

saba avatära-sära çiromaëi

kevala änanda-kanda”, what other avatar thinks how to deliver all the souls. I mean, they come, the deliver the universe, they kill some demon. But actually to come and think, how to get every man, woman and child, how to get everybody to become Krsna Conscious. Where is there an avatar so merciful? Even when at 24 years, He was as a g8/4rihastha , then He thought, “Logicians, argumentative students, mayavadis, all these people are somehow avoiding Me, avoiding My mercy. So then He took sanyas, and with that He got all the others.

In fact, He went to Benaras, and there Kashi Mishra and Chandrasekhar….. Chandrasekhar was considered like a sudra and he ate Prasad at the house of Kashi Mishra but they stayed at the house of Chandrasekhar. But they both approached them, but they couldn’t tolerate hearing all the mayavadi sanyasis criticizing Lord Caitanya.

Lord Caitanya on the way back stopped at Benaras. The He devised a plan to liberate the sanyasis. The brahmana came by, and invited him to his house for Prasad. He said, “I have invited all the sanyasis of Benares. I know that you don’t come. You don’t mix with the other sanysis, but I am begging from you, just have mercy on me, please come.”, so Lord Caitanya agreed. He went and He saw all the mayavadi sanysis were there. He went by the doorway, washed His feet, He offered His obeisances, sat down by the dirty foot water. Then he started to emit effulgence like millions of suns, and all the mayavadis were impressed by the effulgence and stood up. The head was prakasananda Saraswati. He said, “Why are you sitting there in that dirty place.”, He said, “Oh, I am a lower class sanyasis. I am not worthy to sit with you.”, then Prakasananda Saraswati went and took Him by the hand, brought Him to the midst of them.

“I heard you took sanyas from Kesava Bharati. He is one of our sanyasis. Your name is Krsna Caitanya, but you don’t associate with us. You don’t read the Vedanta sutra and meditate. You chant Hare Krsna like a sentimentalist and you associate with other sentimentalist and chant the holy names, chant Hare Krsna. Why is this, you don’t do your duty as a sanyasi?

“See, I can tell you what my guru told me. You see, he told me that I don’t have the intelligence to understand the Vedanta Sutra, instead I should just chant the holy names. He told me one mantra, harer näma harer näma

harer nämaiva kevalam

kalau nästy eva nästy eva

nästy eva gatir anyathä

So since then, I have been chanting the Hare Krsna mahamantra, and I saw that about chanting, sometimes I would laugh, sometimes I would cry, sometimes my hair would stand on end, I have all these symptoms. I went back to my guru and said, “What mantra you gave me, it made me like a mad man.”, he told me, “Wow, this is a good sign, this is Krsnaprema, love of Krsna. So he encouraged me to continue to chant. So I have been doing this.” So like this Lord Caitanya spoke to the Mayavadi sanyasis. He spoke for a long time, and afterwards He convinced them, that actually chant the Hare Krsna mantra. So in this way, everybody was swept away by His Hare Krsna movement.

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare….Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare (repeated by devotees)

Vidya Vadhu Jivanam, anandam burdhi bardhanam. I was listening to a lecture by Prabhupäda . He said, “We go to the ocean and we always find it at the same level.”, but this is anandam burdhivardhanam, the ocean of transcendental bliss, is ever increasing.

So last night, they were singing the adhivas kirtan. I don’t know if you could understand the Bengali but the singer was… one of the last line he was singing. In this kirtan yajna, he said, anander sima nai, ananda means happiness, bliss, pleasure. Sima means limit, the border, anander sima nai, nai means no limits, there is no limits to the spiritual happiness, to the spiritual bliss.

Anander sima nai… Anander sima nai (repeated by devotees)

Anander sima nai… Anander sima nai (repeated by devotees)

Nirananda dure jai…. Nirananda means no happiness, means sadness, unhappiness, dure is far away, Nirananda dure jai… jai means go, it goes far away. All unhappiness, all anxiety, all suffering, all unhappiness, far away.

This is the sankirtan yajna, unlimited happiness and all the sadness far away. What mercy Lord Caitanya gave us! ………………..Haribol (everyone)

This is the ocean of happiness which is ever increasing. Anandar budhi vardhanam, pratipadam purnamrita aswadam, sarvatma snapanam, we are always anxious to taste nectar at every step, with this Hare Krsna mantra gives us this nectar at every step, for everybody, which we are always anxious for.

So Lord Caitanya taught as Krsna, “That I have tasted this wonderful pastimes, especially the pastimes in Vridavan, I would like to share this with everybody.” So He came again as Lord Caitanya and He give us this Hare Krsna mahamantra.

Sometimes we are preoccupied with big institutions, temple to build, various activities to do, deity worship, but he basis is very simple, chanting the Hare Krsna mahamantra, but we forget that sometimes, but that’s the actual basis of everything. So we hope that there will be supreme success, glories of the sankirtan movement.

Param vijayate Krsna sankiratanam, so this land of Nabadwipa, you go walking around after this kirtan mela in our parikrama, and we are continually chanting Hare Krsna in procession. One of the places we go to is Nrsingha palli, and in this part of the Bhagavatam, He is so angry, no one could approach Him except for Prahläda, but here in Nabadwipa, He became so accessible, but all the devas build cottages. The other name of it is called Devapalli. There the wives of the devas cooked for Nrsinghadev. The devas –Ganesh, Indra, Vayu, all the devas they came down, and they served the Lord, He became accessible and He became friendly, and gave mercy to everybody.

Also our Nrsinghadev is very ugra, very angry looking. “Who is molesting my devotee Prahlad, where is the demon?” Here also when Lord Caitanya, Murari Gupta was chanting the Visnu sahasranam, he came to the names of Nrsinghadev. When he chanted the names, Lord Caitanya went of ecstasy, the mood of Nrsinghadev. He ran out into the street, “Where are the demons? Where are the demons?”, and everybody started running, and then He became conscious externally. He had caused all these people to run. Murari Gupta said, “You gave them the mercy, you gave them liberation. By seeing You in that mood they are all liberated.”

So we are here in the place of the Lord’s appearance and the pastimes. He appeared in Mathura as Krsna but His pastimes were in Vrindavana, but Nabadwipaa is non-different from Vrindavana. He appeared here, and His pastimes were here.

Hari bol……………..Hari bol (everyone)

And you are here. You can participate in Lord Caitanya’s pastimes by chanting the Hari nam.

Hare Krsna.

Any questions or comments.

Question :Could you be kind to say a little something about Iswara Puri, because this is his disappearance day today?

Gurumahraj: Iswara  Puri was one of the favorite disciples of Madhavendra Puri. He would clean up after Madhavendra Puri.  When Madhavendra Puri was sick, he would take care of him. So he got the blessings to be a lover of Krsna, and he had another disciple who he was angry with, because he was feeling separation in the mood of the gopi’s. He was lamenting in separation of Krisha. His disciple, Ramchandra Puri, he came up and said, “Oh, why are you crying, why are you lamenting? You should meditate on the impersonal brahmana and be peaceful, om shanti, Om Shanti.. , He got angry, he is in ecstasy of love of Krsna, and the stupid guy, his disciple, is telling him to meditate on the impersonal brahmana. So he said, “don’t show your face to me, especially when I am leaving my body. If I see your face, I will take birth again.”

So Iswar Puri, he was a very special disciple, and he came once in a while in Nabadwipa. He came once when Jagannath Mishra was present. Stayed at the house, he took prasadam, then he came back, he was in disguise at that time, he didn’t tell anybody, he was just as a sanyasi, but he went to Advaita Gosai. Advaita Gosai could see His effulgence as a devotee. He said, “You seem to be a vaiasnava, a vaisnava sanyasi, who are you?”, and he told them that he was Madhavendra Puri disciple. So he was a godbrother of Advaita Gosai. Advaita Gosai was very happy to see him. Then he met Lord Caitanya, who was at that time Nimai Pandit, and Nimai Pandit invited him to his house for meals. That’s the duty of the grihastas, to be very charitable, at least to offer meals to the sanyasis. So then Iswara Puri said that he was writing a book on Krsna lila, and he asked Nimai Pandit, if He would check his book for any mistakes.

Nimai said that, “Krsna doesn’t care whether one makes a mistake or not, He sees the devotion.”

“Still I would like to have my book free from errors.”

Like in sanskrit, visnave nama or one may say vainava nama. So visnave is proper, vaisnava is a bit unclear, colloquial, but Krsna sees the devotees’ mood, and if someone finds fault and they fall down, Iswar Puri said, “Well, I don’t take any offences. Please tell me whatever you want.”

So like this for some hours he would come everyday, and hear Lord Nimai Pandit speak on the grammar of this book. So they would have this academic talks. But Lord Caita+nya went to Gaya to perform the pindi for His diseased father, He met Iswar Puri and then He asked for initiation. At first Iswar Puri said, “Well, you are a great pandit. Who am I to initiate you.”, then He said, “Well, if you don’t initiate me, then there is no use to my living.”

So afraid that He may commit suicide, Iswar Puri gave Him initiation. So like that Iswar Puri was such a great soul. The supreme Lord took him as His guru although He is the guru of all gurus, to show us the example for us to have a guru, he took a guru. So that means that Iswar Puri was an exemplary guru.

So those are a few words about Iswar Puri.

Thank you very much.
