Introduction: So today we are continuing with the drama Lord Caitanya performed at Māmā Ṭhākura’s house, Candraśekhara’s house.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.151

prabhura nṛtya-darśana-śravaṇa-gānakārīra premabhāva—

sarva-śakti-svarūpe nācaye viśvambhara
keha nāhi dekhe hena nṛtya manohara

Jayapatākā Swami: So Viśvambhara acted and danced in the form of His different consorts and energies, no one had seen such a beautiful and enchanting dance before!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.152

ye dekhe, ye śune, yebā gāya prabhu-saṅge
sabei bhāsena prema-sāgara-taraṅge

Jayapatākā Swami: Whoever saw, whoever heard, and those who sang along with the Lord, all floated in the waves of the sea of ecstatic love.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.153

eka vaiṣṇavera yata nayanera jala
sei yena mahā-vanyā vyāpila sakala

Jayapatākā Swami: The tears of even one of the Vaiṣṇavas was enough to create a great flood, but everyone was crying. So, this meant that there was a huge flood of tears, and seeing the drama, the audience was floating in the waves of love.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.154

ādyā-śakti-veṣe nāce prabhu gaurasiṁha
sukhe dekhe tāṅra yata caraṇera bhṛṅga

Jayapatākā Swami: Dressed in the form of the Supreme goddess of the material world, the lion-like Lord Gaura, was seen by His servants, just like bees going around His lotus feet, in great happiness. So Ādyāśakti means the Supreme Energy, and it is explained as follows:

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: From the material point of view, the Lord's original energy in the material world, which is born from His external energy, is called “ādyā-śakti.” The mother of the universe within the limited time factor is called “ādyā-śakti.” The eternal energetic Lord has three types of energies. The energy that produces, maintains, and destroys the perishable universe is the Lord's bahiraṅgāśakti, or external energy. This energy has two propensities—covering and throwing. Apart from this, the Supreme Lord’s antaraṅga-śakti, or internal energy, manifests the eternal Vaikuṇṭha planets. In this material world, which is a product of the external energy, five types of miseries and three modes of nature are present in mutual contention, but in the eternal self-manifested spiritual world, which is a product of the internal energy, there is no interruption in its blissful state. Between the internal and external energies there is one other energy that sometimes comes under the control of the internal energy and sometimes eagerly pursues the external energy.

Accepting the activities of His ādyā-śakti, Lord Gaurasundara enacted the pastime of dancing as a female. By accepting the dress of Rukmiṇī, who is a manifestation of the internal energy, and by manifesting her worship of the Lord, Gaurasundara displayed her worldly connection through the material point of view.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sometimes Lord Gaurasundara, He danced as Rādhārāṇī, sometimes He played and danced as Rukmiṇī, sometimes He played and danced as the external energy, Ādyāśakti. So, we being the jīva-śaktis, we can be either controlled by the internal potency or the external potency, it depends on our desire. If we want to serve Kṛṣṇa, we come under the control of the internal energy. If we desire to enjoy the material world, then we come under the control of the external energy. So, the conditioned souls are under the control of the external energy. And Lord Caitanya’s mission is to get us to serve Kṛṣṇa and be under the control of His internal energy.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.155

kampa, sveda, pulaka, aśrura anta nāi
mūrtimatī bhakti hailā caitanya-gosāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya Gosāñi, became the personification of devotional service or pure bhakti. And therefore, there was no limit to His ecstatic symptoms like shivering in the body, like perspiring, hairs standing on end and shedding of tears.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.156

nācena ṭhākura dhari’ nityānanda-hāta
se kaṭākṣa-svabhāva balite śakti kā'ta

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga while acting and dancing, He held the hand of Lord Nityānanda who was also acting as an old lady. Who has the power to describe the power of the nature of His sidelong glance?

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.157

śrīmān paṇḍitera abhinaya—

sammukhe deuṭi dhare paṇḍita śrīmān
catur-dike haridāsa kare sāvadhāna

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Śrīmān Paṇḍita was acting in the play, He held a lamp before the Lord. Haridāsa was alerting everyone, in all directions.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.158

nityānandera kṛṣṇāveśe mūrchā evaṁ vaiṣṇavagaṇera premakrandana—

henai samaye nityānanda haladhara
paḍila mūrcchita hañā pṛthivī-upara

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time, Lord Nityānanda, Haladhara, playing on the stage, fell unconscious to the ground.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.159

kothāya vā gela buḍi-baḍāira sāja
kṛṣṇāveśe vihvala hailā nāgarāja

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda was dressed, acting as an old lady, what happened to that role? He became overwhelmed, in love of Kṛṣṇa, that source of Lord Śeṣa.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: The word Nāgarāja refers to Lord Śeṣa. Since Nityānanda Prabhu is the origin of Lord Śeṣa, He has been addressed by this name.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.160

yei mātra nityānanda paḍilā bhūmite
sakala vaiṣṇava-gaṇa kānde cāri-bhite

Jayapatākā Swami: As soon as Lord Nityānanda fell to the ground, all the Vaiṣṇavas began to cry, in all directions.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.161

ki adbhuta haila kṛṣṇa-premera krandana
sakala karāya prabhu śrī-śacīnandana

Jayapatākā Swami: How wonderful was this crying, out of pure love of Kṛṣṇa. Lord Śrī Śacīnandana was doing everything by His sweet will.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.162

kāro galā dhari’ keha kānde uccarāya
kāhāro caraṇa dhari' keha gaḍi’ yāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Someone cried loudly, while holding someone else by the neck - embracing someone else by the neck. Someone held the lotus feet of others, and someone rolled on the ground.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.163

mahāprabhura gopīnāthake laīyā viṣṇukhaṭṭāya ārohaṇa—

kṣaṇeke ṭhākura gopīnāthe kole kari’
mahālakṣmī-bhāve uṭhe khaṭṭāra upari

Jayapatākā Swami: Then at that time, Lord Gaurāṅga, in His role as Mahā-lakṣmī, He took the deity of Gopīnātha on His lap, and He sat on the Deity throne.

Thus, ends the chapter, The Purpose of the Lord’s Role as Ādyāśakti.

So here is the rainy season and it just started to rain and we lost all our translators. We have five more minutes to answer some questions. There is so much ecstasy that Lord Nityānanda, He couldn’t contain Himself, He was overwhelmed with love of Kṛṣṇa, and He fell on the ground unconscious. And the devotees started to cry. Someone is embracing each other, and someone is grabbing someone else’s lotus feet, someone is rolling on the ground. They are completely ecstatic and this drama, what an amazing drama!! Lord Caitanya is taking the role of Mahā-lakṣmī here, He takes the Gopīnātha Deity on His lap. So, this is a really amazing drama, that everybody is completely overwhelmed in love of Kṛṣṇa. I have seen many dramas, but I have never seen such a drama where the whole audience is completely overwhelmed, rolling on the ground, crying, hugging each other. Even the actors, they fall on the ground, completely overwhelmed by ecstasy. Haribol! Haribol!

Question: Dear Guru Mahārāja. Please accept my respectful obeisances. (Jayapatākā Swami: Accepted) All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda! (Jayapatākā Swami: Jaya!) We worship Sīmantinī-devī in Sīmantadvīpa and see how dear she is to Lord Gaurāṅga. But in this jīv jāgo song, Lord Gaurāṅga calls māyā-piśācīra kole. What is her fault, as we, the jīva have the tendency to fall and we have volunteered to choose this material world? Is it the jīva’s fault? Then why is it she is called this way in the song?

Your servant,
Śānta Gopī devī dāsī.

Jayapatākā Swami: You see, since we want to enjoy material life, we are kept and bonded by the Ādyāśakti. In that aspect, we are taking shelter of her, to enjoy material life, and therefore, we are conditioned. But then Sīmantinī, she is worshipping Lord Caitanya and she is Prauḍa māyā, she is the protectress of the holy dhāma, and by her mercy we can enter into the esoteric aspect of the hoy dhāma. So, if we want material sense gratification, then she is like a witch. But if we want to serve Kṛṣṇa, then she is like a friend, and she helps us. So, we should want to serve Kṛṣṇa, not want to enjoy this material world. Hare Kṛṣṇa!
