Lord Viśvambhara Sends the Prayers to Kṛṣṇa in the Role of Rukmiṇī
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.70
prabhura rukmiṇī-sāja o tadāveśe nijake rukmiṇī-jñāne tadrūpa abhinaya
gṛhāntare veśa kare prabhu viśvambhara
rukmiṇīra bhāve magna hailā nirbhara
Jayapatākā Swami: So, in the green room, Lord Viśvambhara put on His costume, and He became fully absorbed in the mood of Rukmiṇī.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.71
āpanā nā jāne prabhu rukmiṇī-āveśe
vidarbhera sutā yena āpanāre vāse
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga, in the mood of Rukmiṇī, because fully absorbed and forgot Himself. He considered Himself, the daughter of the King of Vidarbha.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.72
nayanera jale patra likhaye āpane
pṛthivī haila patra, aṅgulī kalame
Jayapatākā Swami: So, He started to write a letter, using the tears from His eyes as the ink, the earth was His letter or paper, and His fingers were His pen.
Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Being absorbed in the mood of Rukmiṇī, Śrī Gaurasundara began to shed tears of love. Those tears were used as ink, the surface of the earth was used as the letter or paper, and His finger was used as a pen.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.73
rukmiṇīra patra—sapta-śloka bhāgavate
ye āche, paḍaye tāhā kāndite kāndite
Jayapatākā Swami: So Rukmiṇī’s letter was seven slokas from the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and He read the letter of Rukmiṇī, He was crying and crying.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.74
gīta-vandhe śuna sāta ślokera vyākhyāna
ye kathāśunile svāmī haya bhagavān
Jayapatākā Swami: Hear the significance or purport of these seven verses of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, in the form of a song, by hearing those verses, the Supreme Lord, became Her husband.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.75
tathāhi (bhāg 10/52/37)—
The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.52.37) states:
śrutvā guṇān bhuvana-sundara śṛṇvatāṁ te
nirviśya karṇa-vivarair harato 'ṅga-tāpam
rūpaṁ dṛśāṁ dṛśimatām akhilārtha-lābhaṁ
tvayyacyutāviśati cittam apatrapaṁ me
Translation: “O most beautiful Kṛṣṇa, I have heard about Your transcendental qualities from others, and therefore all my bodily miseries are relieved. If someone sees Your transcendental beauty, his eyes have attained everything profitable in life. O infallible one, I have become shameless after hearing of Your qualities, and I have become attracted to You.”
Jayapatākā Swami: So, these verses were sent to Kṛṣṇa by Rukmiṇī, and these show Her attachment to Kṛṣṇa, and these verses were able to convince Kṛṣṇa to be Her husband.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.76
(kāruṇyaśāradā rāgena gīyate)—
śuniyā tomāra guṇa bhuvana-sundara
dūra bhela aṅga-tāpa trividha duṣkara
Jayapatākā Swami: By hearing of Your transcendental qualities, O beauty of the worlds, three kinds of insurmountable miseries have been destroyed.
Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: The phrase trividha duṣkara tāpa refers to the three unavoidable miseries of adhyātmika, adhibhautika, and adhidaivika—miseries inflicted by the body and mind, by other living entities, and by natural disturbances.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.77
sarva-nidhi-lābha tora rūpa-daraśana
sukhe dekhe, vidhi yāre dileka locana
Jayapatākā Swami: To have the vision of Your form is like achieving the greatest treasure. The happiness to see Your form, is only awarded by the will of Providence, to those who have achieved suitable eyesight. This is the Bengali translation of the verses that Rukmiṇī sent.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.78
śuni’ yadu-siṁha tora yaśera vākhāna
nirlajja haiyā citta yāya tuyā sthāna
Jayapatākā Swami: Your fame has been spread, and I have heard that You are the lion-like personality of the Yadu-vaṁsa. So, hearing these descriptions, my heart has become shamelessly drawn to You.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.79
kon kulavatī dhīrā āche jaga-mājhe
kāla pāi’ tomāra caraṇa nāhi bhaje
Jayapatākā Swami: What sober, aristocratic, chaste woman within this universe, would not worship Your lotus feet, upon receiving the opportunity?
Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: The phrase kāla pāi means “on getting the opportunity.”
The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.52.38) states:
kā tvā mukunda mahatī kula-śīla-rūpa-
vidyā-vayo-draviṇa-dhāmabhir ātma-tulyam
dhīrā patiṁ kulavatī na vṛṇīta kanyā
kāle nṛ-siṁha nara-loka-mano-‘bhirāmam
Translation: “O Mukunda, You are equal only to Yourself in lineage, character, beauty, knowledge, youthfulness, wealth and influence. O lion among men, You delight the minds of all mankind. What aristocratic, sober-minded, marriageable girl of a good family would not choose You as her husband when the proper time has come?”
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.80
vidyā, kula, śīla, dhana, rūpa, veśa, dhāme
sakala viphala haya tomāra vihane
Jayapatākā Swami: Without You, one’s education, aristocratic family, character, wealth, beauty, dress and residence, are all useless.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.81
mora dhārṣṭya kṣamā kara tridaśera rāya
nā pāri' rākhite citta tomāre miśāya
Jayapatākā Swami: O Lord of the three worlds, please forgive my arrogance, for I am unable to control my heart, which wants to combine with You.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.82
eteke varila tora caraṇa-yugala
manaḥ, prāṇa, buddhi—toṅhe arpila sakala
Jayapatākā Swami: That’s why I have accepted Your two lotus feet, my mind, my life, my intelligence, everything I offer to You.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.83
patnī-pada diyā more kara nija dāsī
mora bhāge śiśupāla nahuka vilāsī
Jayapatākā Swami: Make me Your maidservant, by accepting me as Your wife, don’t let me be the object of Śiśupāla’s enjoyment.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.84
kṛpā kari’ more parigraha kara nātha
yena siṁha-bhāga nahe śṛgālera sātha
Jayapatākā Swami: Having mercy on Me, accept Me O Lord! What is meant for a lion should not be taken by the jackal.
The Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (10.52.39) states:
tan me bhavān khalu vṛtaḥ patir aṅga jāyām
ātmārpitaś ca bhavato 'tra vibho vidhehi
mā vīra-bhāgam abhimarśatu caidya ārād
gomāyu-van mṛga-pater balim ambujākṣa
Translation: “Therefore, my dear Lord, I have chosen You as my husband, and I surrender myself to You. Please come swiftly, O almighty one, and make me Your wife. My dear lotus-eyed Lord, let Śiśupāla never touch the hero's portion like a jackal stealing the property of a lion.”
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.85
vrata, dāna, guru-dvija-devera arcana
satya yadi seviyāchoṅ acyuta-caraṇa
Jayapatākā Swami: If I have observed penances, charity and worshipped the gurus, the brāhmaṇis and the devas, and served the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Acyuta, then.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.86
tabe gadāgraja mora hau prāṇeśvara
dūra hau śiśupāla, ei mora vara
Jayapatākā Swami: Let Gadāgraja Kṛṣṇa, become the Lord of My life, and may Śiśupāla go far away, this is the benediction I pray for.
The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.52.40) states:
pūrteṣṭa-datta-niyama-vrata-deva-vipra
gurv-arcanādibhir alaṁ bhagavān pareśaḥ
ārādhito yadi gadāgraja etya pāṇiṁ
gṛhṇātu me na damaghoṣa-sutādayo 'nye
Translation: “If I have sufficiently worshiped the Supreme Personality of Godhead by pious works, sacrifices, charity, rituals, and vows, and also by worshiping the demigods, brāhmaṇas, and gurus, then may Gadāgraja come and take my hand, and not Damaghoṣa's son or anyone else.”
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.87
kāli mora vivāha haiba hena āche
āji jhāṭa āisaha, vilamba kara pāche
Jayapatākā Swami: My marriage is fixed for tomorrow, so come quickly today, without delay.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.88
gupte āsi’ rahibā vidarbhapura-kāche
śeṣe sarva-sainya-saṅge āsibe samāje
Jayapatākā Swami: Stay secretly near Vidarbhapura, and later enter the city with Your army.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.89
caidya, śālva, jarāsandha—mathiyā sakala
haribeka more dekhāiyā bāhubala
Jayapatākā Swami: After defeating Śiśupāla, Śālva and Jarāsanda, display Your unlimited strength and steal Me away.
The Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (10.52.41) states:
śvo bhāvini tvam ajitodvahane vidarbhān
guptaḥ sametya pṛtanā-patibhiḥ parītaḥ
nirmathya caidya-magadhendra-balaṁ prasahya
māṁ rākṣasena vidhinodvaha vīrya-śulkām
Translation: “O unconquerable one, tomorrow when my marriage ceremony is about to begin, You should arrive unseen in Vidarbha and surround Yourself with the leaders of Your army. Then crush the forces of Caidya and Magadhendra and marry me in the Rākṣasa style, winning me with Your valor.”
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.90
darpa-prakāśera prabhu ei se samaya
tomāra vanitāśiśupāla-yogya naya
Jayapatākā Swami: Now is the time My Lord, for You to manifest Your pride. Your wife is never meant to be taken by Śiśupāla. Your wife is not worthy to be taken by Śiśupāla.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.91
vini bandhu vadhi’ more haribā āpane
tāhāra upāya baloṅ tomāra caraṇe
Jayapatākā Swami: Without killing any friends, and well-wishers or relatives, You can kidnap Me. That method I am telling you, I am placing before Your lotus feet.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.92
vivāhera pūrva-dine kula-dharma āche
nava-vadhu-jana yāya bhavānīra kāche
Jayapatākā Swami: It is the family tradition that the day before the wedding, the bride to be, goes to the temple of the goddess Bhavānī.
The Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (10.52.42) states:
antaḥ-purāntara-carīm anihatya bandhūn
tvām udvahe katham iti pravadāmy upāyam
pūrve-dyur asti mahatī kula-deva-yātrāyasyāṁ
bahir nava-vadhūr girijām upeyāt
Translation: “Since I will be staying within the inner chambers of the palace, You may wonder, ‘How can I carry you away without killing some of your relatives?’ But I shall tell You a way: On the day before the marriage there is a grand procession to honor the royal family's deity, and in this procession the new bride goes outside the city to visit goddess Girijā.”
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.93
sei avasare prabhu haribe āmāre
nā māribā bandhu, doṣa kṣamibā āmāre
Jayapatākā Swami: Taking advantage of this situation, my Lord kidnap me, don’t kill my friends or relatives. Please forgive me for any offence.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.94
yāhāra caraṇa-dhūli sarva aṅge snāna
umāpati cāhe, cāhe yateka pradhāna
Jayapatākā Swami: To bathe in the lotus foot dust, the husband of goddess Umā wants or desires, that dust which is desired by many exalted personalities.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.95
hena dhūli prasāda nā kara yadi more
mariba kariyā vrata, baliluṅ tomāre
Jayapatākā Swami: If You do not bless Me with that lotus foot dust, I vow to end My life, I told You this much.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.96
yata janme pāṅa tora amūlya caraṇa
tāvat mariba, śuna kamala-locana
Jayapatākā Swami: My dear lotus-eyed Lord, until I achieve those priceless lotus feet, I will continue to give up my body birth after birth, until I achieve Your invaluable lotus feet.
The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.52.43) states:
yasyāṅghri-paṅkaja-rajaḥ-snapanaṁ mahānto
vāñchanty umā-patir ivātma-tamo-'pahatyai
yarhy ambujākṣa na labheya bhavat-prasādaṁ
jahyām asūn vrata-kṛśān śata-janmabhiḥ syāt
Translation: “O lotus-eyed one, great souls like Lord Śiva hanker to bathe in the dust of Your lotus feet and thereby destroy their ignorance. If I cannot obtain Your mercy, I shall simply give up my vital force, which will have become weak from the severe penances I will perform. Then, after hundreds of lifetimes of endeavor, I may obtain Your mercy.”
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.97
cala cala brāhmaṇa satvara kṛṣṇa-sthāne
kaha giyā e sakala mora nivedane”
Jayapatākā Swami: Go quickly, my dear brāhmaṇa, to the place of Kṛṣṇa and tell Him all these prayers of Mine.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.98
prabhura abhinaye sakalera premāśru—
ei-mata bale prabhu rukmiṇī-āveśe
sakala vaiṣṇava-gaṇa preme kāṅde hāse
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Viśvambhara spoke in this way, acting in the mood of Rukmiṇī devī. All the Vaiṣṇavas present were crying and laughing, in ecstatic love of Godhead.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 18.99
hena raṅga haya candraśekhara-mandire
catur-dike hari-dhvani śuni uccaiḥsvare
Jayapatākā Swami: Such pastimes took place in Candraśekhara’s house, and the loud vibrations of the names of Hari, could be heard from all the four directions.
So, this is another act or play, Lord Viśvambhara did, We heard one act in Vṛndāvana, and this was another act in Dvārakā. Where Rukmiṇī is praying to Kṛṣṇa to please take Me away, to be Your wife. This was the custom in the kṣatriya families. That one may steal away a bride, and you will have to fight with all the other ksatriyas. So, Lord Caitanya in the mood of Rukmiṇī, He is writing this letter to Lord Kṛṣṇa and sending that with a brāhmaṇa. The contents of the letter are given in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and these were given in Bengali by Śrīla Vṛndāvana dāsa Ṭhākura. So, all the devotees by seeing Lord Caitanya acting as Rukmiṇī, they became ecstatic in the love of Kṛṣṇa, and started to chant the holy names. Haribol! Haribol! Haribol! Haribol!! the ladies were naturally giving their ulu-dhvani.
Thus, ends the chapter, Lord Viśvambhara Sends the Prayers to Kṛṣṇa in the Role of Rukmiṇī.
