Come join us as His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja reads from the new Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book on January 18th, 2019 in Chennai, India.

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram

Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

Introduction: Sorry that we are late today. There was some meeting. Doctor had given me injections, so we got little late. Heard you already got the report of today so I will go directly to the class. Since half of my face is paralyzed, since my stroke in 2008, so I wanted some voice therapy so if there are any words which you find difficulty in understanding, please note it down or send it by internet. On internet we have the two sisters, Gīteśvarī Viṣṇupriyā and Kairava Candrikā devī dāsīs, who are noting down the words and here Ekarāṇī is taking the notes of the words and she is the beautiful lady at the back. So those who are here, you can give the words to her. So, Deva Gaurāṅga will read the verse in Bengali and I will translate it.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.335

sarbabhaktapriẏa śrīvāsera bhṛtyādirao vedabāṇī stutya prabhura darśana-lābha—

sarva-vaiṣṇavera priya paṇḍita-śrīvāsa
tāna bāḍī gele mātra sabāra ullāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita was dear to all the Vaiṣṇavas. They all became happy simply by entering into his house.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.336

anubhave yāṅre stuti kare veda mukhe
śrīvāsera dāsa-dāsī tāṅre dekhe sukhe

Jayapatākā Swami: The Supreme Lord who was offered prayers by the four Vedas on the basis of their realizations was easily seen by Śrīvāsa’s servants and maid servants. The Supreme Personality of Godhead who is realized by the four Vedas, by the different literatures that come from the Vedas, by mantras, by the teachings of the different realized souls, recitation of Vedic mantras by great personalities, what to speak of these highly qualified personalities? The servants and maid servants of Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura could see the Lord FACE TO FACE!! That is why it is said that even if we have sādhu-saṅga’, ‘sādhu-saṅga’ sarva-śāstre kaya lava-mātra sādhu-saṅge sarva-siddhi haya. That if one has the darśana of a pure devotee of Kṛṣṇa even for a second or less, they can get all perfections. So those entering the house of Śrīvāsa and those who worked for Śrīvāsa, because he was such a great devotee, a pure devotee, therefore they got all kinds of perfections.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.337

ataeva vaiṣṇaba sebā-kṛpā-balei kṛṣṇapada kṛpā-lābha—

eteke vaiṣṇava-sevā parama-upāya
avaśya milaye kṛṣṇa vaiṣṇava-kṛpāya

Jayapatākā Swami: So here service of Vaiṣṇavas is glorified. That serving a Vaiṣṇava is the supreme method. Certainly, they receive Kṛṣṇa by the mercy of the Vaiṣṇava.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.338

bahirdaśāẏa āsiẏā prabhura lajjā o śrīvāsake sāntbanānte sagṛhe āgamana—

śrīvāsere ājñā kailā prabhu viśvambhara
“nā kahio, e-saba kathā kāhāro gocara”

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Viśvambhara instructed Śrīvāsa prabhu “Don’t tell anyone these topics.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.339

bahirdaśāẏa āsiẏā prabhura lajjā o śrībāsake sāntvanānte sagṛhe āgamana—

bāhya pāi’ viśvambhara lajjita antara
āśvāsiyāśrīvāsere gelā nija-ghara

Jayapatākā Swami: On attaining again His external consciousness, Lord Viśvambhara, He felt ashamed in His heart. After solacing Śrīvāsa Prabhu, He went to His own home.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.340

sāgoṣṭhī śrībāsera premānandasukha—

sukha-maya hailā tabe śrīvāsa paṇḍita
patnī-vadhu-bhāi-dāsa-dāsīra sahita

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita and his wife, his brother’s wife, brother, servants and maid servants they all along with them felt immense happiness.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.341

ei śrīvāsa-stuti-śravaṇe kṛṣṇadāsya-lābha—

śrīvāsa karilā stuti—dekhiyā prakāśa
ihā yei śune, sei haya kṛṣṇa-dāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: When Śrīvāsa Prabhu offered prayers when he saw the Lord’s manifestation, anyone who hears these prayers will certainly become a servant of Kṛṣṇa.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.342

ei grantha-racanāṛtha granthakārera nityānandājñā-lābha —

antaryāmī-rūpe balarāma bhagavān
ājñā kailā caitanyera gāite ākhyāna

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Balarāma Bhagavān in the form of the Supersoul had ordered me to glorify and to sing the glories connected with Śrī Caitanya Māhaprabhu.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.343

śrīnityānandake gururūpe lābhārtha granthakārera vaiṣṇaba vandanā—

vaiṣṇavera pāye mora ei namaskāra
janma-janma prabhu mora hau haladhara

Jayapatākā Swami: I fall at the feet and offer my respectful obeisances to all of the vaiṣṇavas so that they give me their blessing that I can, birth after birth, Haladhara may be my Lord, birth after birth. Haladhara is another name for Balarāma. Kṛṣṇa is known as the go-rakṣaka, the protector of the cows and Lord Balarāma is famous as the carrier of the plough and promoting the kṛṣi, the nobility of agriculture. One part of vaiśyas’ qualities is kṛṣi-go-rakṣya-vāṇijyaṁ. So Balarāma is kṛṣi, he is the farmer and Lord Kṛṣṇa is the go-rakṣya or the protector of the cows. Therefore, He is known as Gopāla or Govīnda.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.344

ekaï svaẏaṃprakāśa-vigrahera nityānanda o baladeva-nāma o līlā-dbaẏa—

narasiṁha’ ’yadusiṁha’—yena nāma-bheda
ei-mata jāni,—`nityānanda’ ’baladeva’

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Narasiṁha and the Yadu-siṁha are different names of the same person. In this way, I know that Nityānanda and Balarāma, Baladeva are different only in names.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.345

gaurakṛṣṇa preṣṭha nityānanda-baladevaī avadhūtakula-cūr̤āmaṇi—

caitanya-candrera priya vigraha balāi
ebe ’avadhūta-candra’ kari’ yāṅre gāi

Jayapatākā Swami: Balarāma or Balāi is the dearest person to Caitanya-candra. He is now known as Avadūta-candra.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 2.346

kīrtana-vilāsātmaka madhyakhaṇḍa-śravaṇārtha anurodha—

madhya-khaṇḍa-kathā, bhāi! śuna eka-citte
vatsareka kīrtana karilā yena mate

Jayapatākā Swami: So in the Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Vṛndāvana dāsa Ṭhākura says, listen brothers to the Madhya-khaṇḍa topics. Listen very attentively. These describe the kīrtana pastimes of the Lord over the course of one year.

Thus ends the chapter, “The Lord proves His words to remove the doubts of Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura” of the book Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, the Supreme Personality of Godhead as a devotee.

Normally we have verses from various books which tell something of the pastimes of Lord Caitanya. These particular pastimes are described in the Caitanya-Bhāgavata and I asked why other scriptures are not given. But apparently these particular līlās are mentioned in the Caitanya-Bhāgavata. Sometimes a particular līlā is mentioned in a number of different scriptures but each pastime being a little different, different details are given in each scripture. This particular līlā, the scripture Caitanya-Bhāgavata is used.

Are there any questions?

Gaurāṅga Karuṇa Sindhu dāsa: How to properly understand the statement that all perfection can be achieved by having darśana of a pure devotee even for a second and at the same time, Śrīla Prabhupāda saying it is a gradual process?

Jayapatākā Swami: The process may be gradual, but you have to start it somewhere. By seeing a Vaiṣṇava, you may be inspired to start your own process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. It is also gradual, but it depends how intensely you want it. If you want it very intensely it can happen very quickly. I gave the example like a baby cries whaaaa… mildly, mother says well, oh, the baby always cries. But if the baby really cries, Whaa MUMYYYYYYYYY AHHHH mother drops everything. So, if you want Kṛṣṇa so bad, then the gradual process will be very fast. Problem is we don’t usually want as Locana dāsa sings how Nitāi-Gaura are most merciful, how they got even the animals to cry, they got the stones to melt by Their chanting. But then he says, saṁsāre majiyā. rohili poriyā, se pade nahilo āśa - I am lost in this material world of birth and death, trying to enjoy my senses, I have fallen in this illusion, I don’t have any hope to get the mercy of Nitāi-Gaura, to get Their lotus feet. I am suffering and enjoying just according to my karma. So, sings Locana dāsa, āpana karama, bhuñjāye śamana, kahoye locana-dāsa.

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing Lord Caitanya is manifesting three types of consciousness, His external consciousness, where He can relate with the ordinary things of the world, and His internal consciousness where He is seeing everything with a spiritual perspective, and something in between, He partially see the world and He can partially see the eternal līlā. So, in the third consciousness He sometimes tells what He is experiencing. So this pastime with Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura was in the internal consciousness and He was speaking from the spiritual platform. He was manifesting Himself as Viṣṇu but when He came back to His external consciousness, He felt a little ashamed that He had spoken so many secret things, confidential matters. That is why He told Śrīvāsa that don’t reveal these topics to anyone. So these things were revealed only after Lord Caitanya left. The little girl Nārāyaṇī she told Vṛndāvana dāsa Ṭhākura and he wrote down the Caitanya-Bhāgavata.

Alright thank you very much.
