22 Jan 2019|Duration: 00:45:30|English|Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book|Chennai, India

Come join us as His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja reads from the new Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book on January 23rd, 2019 in Chennai, India.

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram

Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

So the topic of today is Explanation of offence of mother Śacī. So we will start Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya-kaṇḍa, Chapter 22, 58th verses. So today, happy January 23 to all of you… Everyday is a happy day if we can serve Kṛṣṇa, I was hearing how they had discovered a city submerged in the water above the modern city of Dvārakā in the sea, 5kms off the shore and they got all kinds of artifacts, they say that the city was five to six thousand years ago. Some of the Vedic texts that they were attacked by Sālvā who had extraterrestrial airplanes and how Kṛṣṇa fired special weapons. So the people who are thinking this all mythology, but with the finding of the city of Dvārakā they are realizing these are history and not mythology. So, similarly the pastimes of Lord Caitanya are only five hundred years old! Lord Caitanya was 6 years old when Christopher Columbus discovered America. So, this is the thing which has been recorded in history. So, we are very happy to be remembering how the Lord comes down to earth to show His pastimes, five thousand years ago Kṛṣṇa came in His original form and five hundred years ago Kṛṣṇa came as a devotee to give people a chance to enter into His nītya līlā.

So today, I had my physiotherapy this morning. I went on cycle ride and did 720 cycles. And I am giving a class here! So that is just a short explanation we have.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.059

śacīdevīra vaiṣṇaba aparādha ki

vastu-vicārete seha aparādha nahe
tathāpiha `aparādha' kari' prabhu kahe

Jayapatākā Swami: If it is analyzed, mother Śacī did not really commit any offence. Even then, Prabhu Lord Caitanya said it was an offence.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.059

`ihāre advaita-nāma kene loke ghoṣe?'
`dvaita' balilena āi kona asantoṣe

Jayapatākā Swami: Why do people call Him Advaita? And what dissatisfaction caused mother Śacī to call Him Dvaita?

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.060

sei kathā kahi, śuna hai' sāvadhāna
prasaṅge kahiye viśvarūpera ākhyāna

Jayapatākā Swami: I will narrate that topic, listen carefully! That topic is related to Viśvarūpa, the elder brother of Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.061

prabhura agraja—viśvarūpa mahāśaya
bhuvana-durlabha-rūpa, mahā-tejomaya

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa Mahāśaya was the Lord’s elder brother. He was greatly powerful and effulgent. His form was rare in this material world!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.062

sarva-śāstre viśārada parama sudhīra
nityānanda-svarūpera abheda śarīra

Jayapatākā Swami: He was expert in all the scriptures and He was very sober. He is non-different from Nityānanda prabhu! And His form is non-different from Nityānanda prabhu.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.063

tāna vyākhyā bujhe, hena nāhi navadvīpe
śiśu-bhāve thāke prabhu bālaka-samīpe

Jayapatākā Swami: There was no one in Navadvīpa who was able to understand His explanation of the śāstras. Yet He remained in a child mood. Prabhu remained in the association of young boys.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.064

eka-dina sabhāya calilā miśravara
pāche viśvarūpa putra parama sundara

Jayapatākā Swami: One day Jagannatha Miśra went to an assembly of scholars. After him, Viśvarūpa prabhu his son, followed. He was very handsome.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.065

bhaṭṭācārya-sabhāya calilā jagannātha
viśvarūpa dekhi' baḍa kautuka sabhā'ta

Jayapatākā Swami: As Jagannātha Miśra entered the assembly of the Bhaṭṭācāryas, the learned brāhmaṇas, seeing Viśvarūpa, everyone there became very pleased, on seeing Viśvarūpa!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.066

nityānanda-rūpa prabhu parama sundara
harilena sarva-citta sarva-śakti-dhara

Jayapatākā Swami: The eternal blissful form is non-different from Prabhu Nityānanda and Viśvarūpa was most beautiful. He stole away everyone’s heart, for He possesses all the potencies!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.067

eka bhaṭṭācārya bale,—“ki paḍa chāoyāla?”
viśvarūpa bale,—“kichu kichu sabākāra”

Jayapatākā Swami: One Bhaṭṭācārya said, oh child, what are you studying? Viśvarūpa replied, I know a little of everything! So, a Bhaṭṭācārya is a learned brāhmaṇa scholar. So when he asked Viśvarūpa oh child, how far have you progressed, in the field of education, and in reply Viśvarūpa replied that I have studied something from all scriptures. As a result of this His father Jagannātha Miśra became disturbed and chastised the child Viśvarūpaa.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.068

śiśu-jñāne keha kichu nā balila āra
miśra pāilena duḥkha śuni' ahaṅkāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Considering Him a child, no one said anything else to Him. Jagannātha Miśra was disturbed on hearing his son’s arrogance.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.069

nija kārya kari' miśra calilena ghara
pathe viśvarūpere mārilā eka caḍa

Jayapatākā Swami: So after finishing his business, Jagannātha Miśra headed for home. On the path, Jagannātha Miśra slapped one time, Viśvarūpa.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.070

ye puṅthi paḍis beṭā, tāhā nā baliyāki
bola balili tui sabhā-mājhe giyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Son, rather than telling them what books you read, why did You speak like that in the assembly?

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.071

tomāre ta' sabāra haila mūrkha-jñāna
āmāre o dile lāja kari' apamāna”

Jayapatākā Swami: Everyone thought You to be a fool! And You insulted me by embarrassing me!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.072

parama udāra jagannātha mahābhaga
ghare gelā putrere kariyā baḍa rāga

Jayapatākā Swami: The greatly magnanimous Jagannātha Miśra who was most fortunate, returned to his home, after showing great anger to his son.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.073

punaḥ viśvarūpa sei sabhā-mājhe giyā
bhaṭṭācārya-saba prati balena hāsiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Meanwhile, Viśvarūpa went back to that assembly and spoke to the Bhaṭṭācāryas with a smile on His face!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.074

“tomarā ta' āmāre jijñāsā nā karilā
bāpera sthānete āmā' śāsti karāilā

Jayapatākā Swami: None of you have questioned Me and so My father punished Me.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.075

jijñāsā karite yāhā kāro laya mane
sabe meli' tāhā jijñāsaha āmā'-sthāne”

Jayapatākā Swami: Whatever you want to ask Me, ask Me now! Or you all can unite and ask Me whatever you want!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.076

hāsi' bale eka bhaṭṭācārya,—“śuna śiśu!
āji ye paḍile, tāhā vākhānaha kichu”

Jayapatākā Swami: One Bhaṭṭācārya with a smile on his face, said, listen child, today what You have read, please give some explanation.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.077

vākhānaye sūtra viśvarūpa-bhagavān
sabāra cittete vyākhyā haila pramāṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa Bhagavān started to explain some of the sūtras. And everyone became struck that what He was saying was conclusive!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.078

sabei balena,—“sūtra bhāla vākhānilā”
prabhu bale,—“bhāṇḍāiluṅ, kichu nā bujhilā

Jayapatākā Swami: So everyone said, You have explained the sutras very nicely! The Lord said, My dear, I have cheated you, I have deceived you. You have understood nothing. Or you have not understood anything. kichu nā bujhilā.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.079

yata vākhānila, saba karila khaṇḍana
vismaya sabāra citte haila takhana

Jayapatākā Swami: Whatever He had said, He refuted everything. Everyone’s heart was struck with wonder at that time!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.080

ei mate tina-bāra kariyā khaṇḍana
punaḥ sei tina-bāra karila sthāpana

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, He established and refuted His arguments three times. And then He would reestablish His arguments explanations’ three times. So after being chastised by His father, Viśvarūpa returned to the assembly of brāhmaṇas or scholars or Paṇḍitas, and then when he was questioned by the scholars, He began to explain the Vedānta-sūtras. He gave the audience great satisfaction with His explanations. He then refuted His explanations, and then He reestablished his refuted explanations, and then he refuted them again! Ha! Viśvarūpa ki jai! Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.081

parama subuddhi' kari' sabe vākhānila
viṣṇu-māyā-mohe keha tattva nā jānila

Jayapatākā Swami: Greatly intelligent, He explained everything very intellectually, but by the influence of the illusion of Vishnu māyā, no one could understand what He said. Viśvarūpa is Himself the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, all these scholars being bewildered by the illusory energy of Viṣṇu, they could not understand anything about the science of the Absolute Truth. Since devotional service, the eternal propensity of the soul, had not awakened in them, they were unable to understand those explanation This did not surprise Saṅkarṣaṇa prabhu. Viśvarūpa is the incarnation of Saṅkarṣaṇa, who is the expansion of Nityānanda prabhu.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 22.082

hena mate navadvīpe vaise viśvarūpa
bhakti-śūnya loka dekhi' nā pāya kautuka

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa in this way lived, resided in Navadvīpa. Yet He was not happy or pleased that people were bereft of devotional service – not pleased.

So we will stop here verse 83 of chapter 22, Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇda.

This tells a little bit about the situation in Navadvīpa prior to the saṅkīrtana movement.

Jayapatākā Swami: You know, in different cultures, they have different standards for bringing up children. So thinking that Viśvarūpa had acted in a very proud manner, he gave him a tap on His face, asking him, why did you do like that? He obviously did not hit Viśvarūpa very hard but he displayed his displeasure with His proud answer. So, there is saying, like spare the rod and spoil the child. So Prabhupāda said that you threaten but don’t use the stick! Since some parents may get carried away, generally these corporal punishments is forbidden in many societies. Jagannātha Miśra did not beat his son; he just gave Him a tap! Actually, He was not in false ego, He told the truth and went back and defeated all the scholars. He also said, I was chastised by my father. He didn’t take it that He was beaten, but that He was chastised. If the parent shows all time their love to the child, but sometimes if they correct the child, the child knows that they are correcting out of love. Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Online devotees watching were ready by the repeater. 179 devotees. Almost 200.

Question: The relation between Lord Caitanya and Viśvarūpa in the childhood is the same as Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda?

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa was much older than Lord Caitanya. Maybe like four or five years. So, like when Lord Caitanya was a small toddler Viśvarūpa was like a nine-year-old student. So, the difference between Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda only joined Lord Caitanya at the beginning of the sankīrtana movement. And so Viśvarūpa was acting as the elder brother to Viśvambhara. While Lord Nityānanda acted more like an assistant of Lord Caitanya. Although He was higher up in the disciplic succession.

So I have some prasāda here from Śrīraṅgam and also some sweets there. So enjoy!
