“At Viṣṇu-kāñcī there is Lord Viṣṇu, at Māyāpur Lord Hari, and throughout the universe a variety of other forms.

Purport:

All of these forms are mūrti forms, and They are worshiped in the temples. Their names are Keśava at Mathurā, Puruṣottama or Jagannātha at Nīlācala, Śrī Bindu Mādhava at Prayāga, Madhusūdana at Mandāra, and Vāsudeva, Padmanābha and Janārdana at Ānandāraṇya, which is situated in Kerala, South India. At Viṣṇu-kāñcī is Lord Varadarāja, and Hari is situated at Māyāpur, Lord Caitanya’s birth site. Thus in different places throughout the universe there are various Deities in temples bestowing Their causeless mercy upon the devotees. All these Deity forms are nondifferent from the mūrtis in the spiritual world of the Vaikuṇṭas. Although the arcā-mūrti, the worshipable Deity form of the Lord, appears to be made of material elements, it is as good as the spiritual forms found in the spiritual Vaikuṇṭalokas. The Deity in the temple, however, is visible to the material eyes of the devotee. It is not possible for one in material, conditioned life to see the spiritual form of the Lord. To bestow causeless mercy upon us, the Lord appears as the arcā-mūrti so that we can see Him. It is forbidden to consider the arcā-mūrti to be made of stone or wood. In the Padma Purāṇa it is said:

arcye viṣṇau śilā-dhīr guruṣu nara-matir vaiṣṇave jāti-buddhir viṣṇor vā vaiṣṇsnavānāṁ kali-mala-mathane pāda-tīrthe ’mbu-buddhiḥ śrī-viṣṇor nāmni mantre sakala-kaluṣa-he śabda-sāmānya-buddhir viṣṇau sarveśvareśe tad-itara-sama-dhīr yasya vā nārakī saḥ

No one should consider the Deity in the temple to be made of stone or wood, nor should one consider the spiritual master an ordinary human being. No one should consider a Vaiṣṇava to belong to a particular caste or creed, and no one should consider caraṇāmṛta or Ganges water to be like ordinary water. Nor should anyone consider the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra to be a material vibration.

His Holiness Jayapatākā  Swami: Caitanya Caritāmṛta Madhya Līlā chapter 20 up to text 217 so far.

So, it is a very technical instruction given by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to Sanātana Goswami, regarding the expansions of the Lord. This writing of Śrī Caitanya charitamrita is considered to be the post graduate study for the devotee because it is a very high topics simply dealing with the spiritual world and the transcendental nature of the lord in the rasas between the lord and his devotee of course discussed in detail although not at this moment.

Here we have understood the different forms of the Lord which are expanding in the spiritual world.

From Goloka Vṛndāvana where Kṛṣṇa resides has three parts: Gokula, Mathurā and Dwaraka, another part is where Caitanya resides is the Swetadwip. Then the on the 8 sides of Goloka Vṛndāvana were 3 forms of the Lord in each part, where the Vaikunta lokas. From there unlimited Vaikunta lokas are manifesting each with different forms of the Lord.

So, the cosmology in the spiritual world is not the same as cosmology of the material world. In material world there are 14 planetary systems divided in different ways so many space in the sky and the sun.

So, here in the material world is a different cosmology than in the spiritual world is to be understood by studying the spiritual cosmology of the Lord one can also fully understand the material cosmology in the Vedas as well. So, there is no hard in studying both.

One point here is how the different forms of the Lord in the material world, the different deity forms are actually not different than the spiritual forms in the spiritual sky. Although we are able to see them because they appear to be made of different material objects. We shouldn't think that this is some material object. We should think that this is the Lord. We are worshipping Kṛṣṇa Himself and Kṛṣṇa will reciprocate. We need to bow down before the form of the Lord offering our obeisance’s surrendering.

Similarly, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains every time we see the spiritual master, we should pay our obeisance’s, we should offer our respect to the Vaiṣṇavas not considering them according to their material body designation owing to caste, creed and so on.

One sees a sanyasi one bows down in the morning, the first time one sees, Prabhupāda even said one should fast the whole day if they do not bow down and many advice are given in the Padma purāṇa. We should not consider the Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahā mantra to be material vibration or caraṇāmṛta or Ganges water to be by ordinary water "pada tīrthe' mbu buddhir" pada tīrthe means caranamrt. Pada means the Lotus feet and Tīrthe means the sacred nectar coming from the Ambu-buddir bathing waters of the Lord's lotus feet.

In South India they just say tīrtha. Give me tīrtha, Ambu means water buddi Ambu buddi to think that "oh this is water. What's the big deal."

There was once a famous sādhu in India who said that "What is the use of watering the Tulasī plant, better to water eggplant. If we think Tulasī and eggplant are the same that's an offensive mentality. There is difference in Tulasī and eggplant although the eggplant gives you a big fruit but Tulasī doesn't have a big fruit but Tulasī has a spiritual quality that can awaken our dormant Kṛṣṇa Consciousness.

Just as some people they think "Well, what's the use of watering the Tulasī you can get medicinal fruits?

But even though there are some plants that are giving medicinal benefits." Tulasī is also very medicinal but we generally don't use it for that purpose. Although there are other medicinal plants, they don't give any proof they use a leaf or bark or something. But they are very rather why to seek cure for diseases.

So, Tulasī cures our material bondage in the material world, cures our forgetfulness of Kṛṣṇa gives us remembrance of Kṛṣṇa. So, this is actually the greatest medicine. So, how valuable is Tulasī we cannot imagine the sacred plant form of Kṛṣṇa's pure devotee.

So, like this if someone considers all of these transcendental objects with material vision then it's considered nārakī saḥ. That they are only living in hell. This type of hellish mentality one who doesn't respect. The Guru the Vaiṣṇavas the deity form of the Lord, this is Viṣṇu or the Vaiṣṇava pada tīrtha, bathing water the foot bathing water if we think that this is ordinary water, we think that Viṣṇu's name is ordinary word even though it has ordinary vibration, this is hellish mentality.

It’s his Lordships mercy he comes in his deity form to accept our worship.

This reminds me of how there was one brāhmaṇa who was regularly worshiping the deity form, he took it very seriously this is actually the system of the deity worship. We should take it very seriously never taking the deity for granted. [Not Clear – 00:15:25].

This is the story of you all know this story of course to some extent how the someone or other. How there was one travelling brāhmaṇa. He used to carry the deity of saligram and Gopal with him and he went to the house of Jagannath Miśra somehow.

Lord Caitanya was only a baby.

So, at that time Jagannath Miśra was very happy to receive the brāhmaṇa and he offered him stay in my house.

They were discussing Kṛṣṇa kathā and so he requested the brāhmaṇa even though the system was that the brāhmaṇa wouldn't eat without first offering to his deity. So, what Kṛṣṇa had eaten he had to eat.

So, this system of deity worship, one has to follow very strictly. Routine once fixed, not that once in a week changing. One shouldn't think that "Well, someone else can do my service" I mean to say that one should take it as their personal responsibility whatever service they have extracted for the deity and not just take it lightly. If I don't show off then may be someone else might do it. We should take it personally that I have to be there If my turn is to be there. This is my service for the deity.

In fact, in Māyāpur we had started something that we had done before. We had stopped for a couple of years due to some influence or resolution, I guess. We used to regularly have the deity reporting system where we would offer our reports to the deity.

Sometimes in a monthly basis sometimes in a weekly. Now we are doing it in a monthly basis.

Prabhupāda mentions this in Nectar of Devotion and this also I personally witnessed in Los Angeles in 1970.  When Prabhupāda was there even I was there in India.

At that time, they had this small Rādhā Kṛṣṇa deities and everyone would go before the deities and temple would make their report what were the results of the week, they do it weekly.

And then individually devotees would come and offer their report to the deity, what service they had done for the Lord in the entire week. So, that was quite an enlightening experience to be able to come before the deity for the first time and actually recognize oneself as I am the servant of the deity and explaining in this week, I was in sankirtan or I did this and this service for you. What I would like to do in the next week or begging for forgiveness for any offenses and mistakes we may knowingly or unknowingly make. So, this is very nice.

In Māyāpur we have started this system again but there is some research that is done by our chief pundits informing that there are a lot of ceremonies. We will take the deity in a procession, place the deity on a special mandapa for praying and then list of ceremonies that can be done, these are one of the major aspects of deity worship in temples. So now we started that system again.

So, this Tīrtha brāhmaṇa is a wandering mendicant brāhmaṇa he was of course not even elaborate worship like that because he had his own personal deity couldn't do temple worship. But he did this much even he wouldn't eat before he offered to his deity. Could only take the prasad or remnants from the deity.

So, after discussing with Jagannath das Miśra having very enjoyable time. Then he decided to offer. So, then Jagannath Miśra requested "let us give you all the ingredients. I am assisting and you make all offering to your deity." So, actually the whole family they assisted.

Śacī mata they cut the vegetables, cut everything Brāhmaṇa prepared nice offering. Brāhmaṇa himself was cooking made a nice plate and the brāhmaṇa took the plate out that should be for the deity then he started to meditate. There is a system called you meditate that the Lord should come to manasā pūjā, he should come and accept the offering.

He was meditating on Kṛṣṇa, saligram śilā, Nārāyaṇa please come and take the offering.

So, of course Lord Caitanya he knew he was the Super Soul, he knows what everyone was thinking.  So, he knew what the brāhmaṇa was thinking.

Immediately the little baby came and start eating the offering. The brāhmaṇa was obviously like "Oh No! This little baby eaten my offering. He has ruined the offering.

Oh, No! Alas! Alas! What has happened."

Then everyone Jagannath Miśra runs

"Oh No! what have you done!

You little rascal Nimāi."

And Nimāi after seeing his father angry. Giving a good slapping as he was running away.

Ummm [Devotees laughing].

Then the brāhmaṇa sees that Jagannath Miśra is "I am gonna teach you for eating the Kṛṣṇa bhoga" and he jumps up and grabs then brāhmaṇa says

"Oh No! Don't do. What has this little baby. What is the use of beating this baby?

He doesn't know right or wrong. He came and ate. Why beating him?

He doesn't know anything. Please I request you do not do this.

I think that I am not meant to eat rice let me offer some fruits and roots to the deity and some prasad, simple prasad.

So, then Jagannath Miśra he was pleading him

"No! No! If you accept me as your servant, I request you, you came here as my guest I have to serve you. Please one more time you prepare. Doesn't matter one offering was spoiled. Please make one more offering. This is my humble request."

And everyone said "Yes. Please do it. Please Come on."

Answering them he said, "Alright.  I will come and do it again."

So then all began to go and clean the kitchen up and get there cut down the sabjis they are already he goes and start cooking just trying to keep baby Nimāi away, far away so he won't bother.

He said "Don't worry he is sleeping in the next house.

Mother Śacī takes them into the next house. So, by the time they prepared the offering it's about to sun set.  Takes it before the deity and he offers it again. When he started to offer, he meditates.

Gopāla come take the offering. I am offering to the deities. Immediately like yoga māyā covers everyone and little baby Nimāi comes from the next house and started taking his offering. "Oh, No!" And Jagannath Mishra How did he make it here?

This time l am gonna give you a lesson."

He took a stick and he ran and chanted "Nimail am gonna beat you"

The brāhmaṇa said, "No! No! No! Don't beat him. Don't beat him."

There is a whole other thing don’t beat him, everyone pleaded Jagannath Mishra.

And said you are very sober minded. You are very sattvic. How will it be good for your Brahminical quality to beat a little baby with a stick. [Devotees laughs] This is not proper. I am not meaning to just argue with you. This is the will of the Lord. No need to be in anxiety. I will just offer some fruit and No problem for Jagannath miśra. [Devotees laughs] All very frustrated.

And all the devotees were very morose. Because the brāhmaṇa couldn't get any offering and couldn't take prasad.

All of a sudden Viswaroopa comes in, the elder brother of Lord Caitanya. He just came from hearing the Bhāgavatam class given by Advaita goswami most likely and gazing on the man above told so at that age and the brāhmaṇa sees him.

Actually, Viswaroop is non different from Sankarshana. He is non different form of Nityānanda Prabhu.  He is so beautiful and immediately he becomes attracted. Who is this boy, father of this blessed child? So wonderful. And someone said this is also the oldest son of Jagannath Miśra and Śacī mata. This is very glorious.

He blessed Viswaroopa "May all the glories be on you." And Viswaroopa offeres his obeisance’s to the brāhmaṇa. He started to speak. "His voice is so sweet." The brāhmaṇa was feeling so ecstasy just be hearing his voice.

Voice of the Lord himself in the disguise of as a small brāhmaṇa boy, house of Jagannath Miśra. We should serve.

You know that guest is Lord Nārāyaṇa. You are carrying them in your heart being a pure devotee of the Lord. You have blessed our home by coming.  We are truly blessed by your presence you being a great Vaiṣṇava. And he knew he couldn’t eat anything; we are very sad that you could not take your meal. If suppose it wasn't written for me to take today. So, I will take some fruits. So, you are a great renunciant, you live in the forest. For you taking fruits and roots is quite alright. Because you are habituated to it.

But when such a great person has come to our house, we are grihastas we are living in the household. So, it is our duty to feed the guest, especially the great Vaiṣṇava. And for us it would not be appropriate to simply give fruits and roots to great personality like this. [devotees laugh] In fact for that offense we may have to go to hell and I am sure you would not desire this evil upon us.

So, therefore since you are so renounced a little austerity of again cooking.  (Not clear: 26:00) So, he spoke so Nectarian the brāhmaṇa said alright. Hari bol! Everybody jumped up and they again cleaned the kitchen.

Now you really hide Nimāi Pandit.  Why are you complaining to me?

You called me I came. What are you talking about?

How can you eat a brahman food?

I am a cow herd boy. I can’t eat brahmins food?

Brahmans are always giving food to the cow herd boys. Now they are laughed. What are you talking about?

Funny little child [ devotees laughs].

So, they took Nimai and he fell asleep on the lap of Saci and everyone is sound asleep. Then the brahman prepares everything but this time it almost becomes mid night.  Everybody gradually fell asleep. Whole house is asleep. He finishes all his preparations he takes all the offering in a plate and takes it out to deities places in front and then he again goes into meditation. Meditates on Gopal. Please come and take the offering.

So, hearing he comes Lord Caitanya baby Nimai two-year-old baby. He gets up from where he is comes over and brahmana sees that again he has eaten.

"Oh No!!"

Why you always call me I come, why you are so upset?

[devotees laughs]

And then he takes on his transcendental form. You are my true devotee I am revealing my form.  You are always calling and I am coming. He takes on eight handed form. Form of Shanka, Chakra, Padma and Gadā. [Not Clear – 00:29:30]

Four hand Nārāyaṇa form and another four hands one holding butter in the left hand and with the right hand he is eating. In other hand he is holding on a flute he is playing with two hands.

So, in this way the brāhmaṇa could see this transcendental form he became so ecstatic he is offering obeisance’s he jumped up. He became so ecstatic "oh!" he just fainted. Because not only he could see the form he could see Vṛndāvan, he could see the cow herd boys. And so many cows and the peacocks, the Mālatī flowers and everything he saw was like the whole vision. He fainted in ecstasy.

So, actually he is worshipping Nārāyaṇa. He could see Nārāyaṇa. He is worshipping Gopal, he saw the two forms of Gopāla, the baby form and the form playing the flute or mādhurya form. All in one deity. Most rare deity to see all these things. Because he was worshipping the deity form, whatever he was worshipping, he could actually see in original spiritual form that is visible in the spiritual world. It is not possible for ordinary persons. Its only possible for only highly blessed.

Actually, what happened after he fainted it will be discussed today.

But I was reminded of the pastime because how the deity form Prabhupāda said is non different from the mūrti in the spiritual world of the Vaikunta.

Although the Archa mūrti the deity form of the Lord appears to be made of material elements, it is as good as the spiritual forms found in the vaikuṇṭha loka. So, because of the devotee's determination and his rigid fixed vow to always maintain and serving the deity, the Lord blessed him in this way he could actually see the spiritual form of the Lord.

If we want to have this depth in Kṛṣṇa consciousness we have to be determined to follow our vows, follow the instructions of the spiritual master. We have to take that initial effort to avoid breaking the regulative principles, to avoid offenses against the Vaiṣṇavas, to avoid the weeds, weeds like or disobeying the legislative principles, kuti nati not being straight forward in our dealings, being violent to other 5, not preaching to them or desiring fame adoration and distinction, or material desire. All these things are obstacles in the devotion. So, we have to avoid. We have to take necessary action to avoid these. That's why we also pray at the time of prasāda

"Mahā prasāde Govinde Nāma brahmaṇi vaishnave svalpa puṇya vrat rājan vishwasa naiva jāyate"

Glorifying the mahā prasādam, Govinda's name, the brāhmaṇas, the Vaiṣṇavas. These are all transcendental connected to the Lord. Even though they are in the material world, they are spiritualized, they are purified. Therefore, they are worshipped by the ordinary living entities.

When Jagannath Miśra and Śacī mata, they are always worshipping the Vaiṣṇavas.

When mother Śacī was carry the baby Caitanya in her body, that time when she was six months in the pregnancy, guess who suddenly came to visit her house.

Without any advance warning, just on day knocking on the door, calling him was Advaita goswami. Advaita goswami, leader of all the brāhmaṇas, most respectful brāhmaṇa in the community, hardly they expected him to visit their humble house. They can see themselves very junior brāhmaṇa to him, calling in their house, sat him down and paid their obeisance’s to him. Then they wanted to bathe their Lotus feet.

So, mother Śacī she got the water, since he was grihasta women could bathe his feet. So, she took the water and was bathing his feet with water.

Advaita was looking at Mother Śacī who was carrying Lord Caitanya in her six months, he started to manifest ecstatic symptoms tears are coming from his eyes, his body was shaking, voice was choking.

Jagannath Miśra " What's the matter?

Everything alright?

What's the matter?

He couldn't understand what's happening.

And then Advaita's eyes are so wide looking at mother Śacī.

Suddenly he jumped up and started to circumambulate mother Śacī.

Then Jagannath Miśra says"

What are you doing?

You know, my wife, why this great Brāhmaṇa is walking around my wife. [devotees laughs]

She is so insignificant. Why is he doing this?"

And he went like seven times and Jagannath Miśra says " Please don't do this. We are your servant don't do this. Why are you" and he goes around several times and pays his obeisances and gets up and Jagannath Miśra was really bewildered. What you are doing is filled with doubt. Please take away our anxiety. Why are you doing all this?"

Jagannath Miśra spoken to by Advaita says," My Dear friend do not worry. We will reveal everything to you a message. Now I cannot tell you. Just do one thing for me. Take some sandal wood and make a nice pot of scented oil, put it over the womb of your dear wife.

Hare Kṛṣṇa.

After he told they were really puzzled (laughing) Obviously it’s not wrong they discussed must be a great child.

So, he did this. He could see that how Jagannath Miśra and Śacī mata were immediately offering their respects to the brāhmaṇas.

That wandering brāhmaṇa one time when Lord Caitanya grew older, Īśvara Purī arrived, they requested him to stay at their house. This was always they used to respect the Brāhmaṇas, the Vaiṣṇavas and the Sanyasis, they worship the deity form of the Lord, they were perfect Brāhmaṇa and Vaiṣṇava. So, they were blessed to have Lord Caitanya as their son.

So, Lord Caitanya he taught that we should be careful not to see the deity form material not to say rather, as Objects connected with Lord as material. We should chant Hare Kṛṣṇa with faith taking shelter of all these merciful manifestations of the Lord. Because the Lord has come here in deity form, we are getting mercy upon us so we can worship him. We should not take this mercy for granted. We should be always very enthusiastic to worship, very carefully worship how it's possible.

HARE KṚṢṆA HARE KṚṢṆA KṚṢṆA KṚṢṆA HARE HARE, HARE RĀMA HARE RĀMA RĀMA RĀMA HARE HARE.

We shouldn't think that all those books are ordinary books. We chant some literatures which are empowered. By giving them to the fallen souls they will benefit the fallen souls will benefit immensely, inconceivably and unlimitedly.

Any questions?

Devotee: (Not clear 38:30 devotee speaking)

Yes. We find that sometimes there is mentioned only one book. Other pastimes are mentioned in several books.  This pastime is mentioned in one śloka in Caitanya caritāmṛta. 20 ślokas in Bhakti Ratnakar, 1so ślokas in Caitanya Bhagavat.

So, sometimes there is overlapping, sometimes one gets first through it. Sometimes one gets other details like when Lord Caitanya first broke the Ekadashi vrata the first grain you call that Annaprasana and Naamkaran, giving the name we tell that the same day.

So, the Caitanya caritāmṛta explains one may not have the decision how they called Nīlāmbara chakravarti and how they decided to have that festival.

The Caitanya Bhagavat explains who Lord Caitanya sent invites for that festival what they were addressed when they came what the discussions were which name should be given

What are the reason why the purports were written?

Why Vishvambar was chosen and the second name Nimāi was also given suggested by the women.

Then Caitanya Mangal gives the details of how Lord Caitanya appeared at that function as a little 6-7-month baby.

How was he decorated, what does he do?

How there were different objects piled up not only money but gold silver there was Bhāgavatam and many Vedic literatures all piled together.

There was rice, pile of rice in case he was farmer or something to see what was his last life. There were 7,6-7 different can’t remember all of them I go to brāhmaṇa I go to translate them all the different many different things and they left them His father was on the other side, come on. We just only put the money and the Bhāgavatam. They had a whole pile of Vedas, whole pile of gold, silver, small coins see this is big coin money medium one and everything (laughing).

Lord Caitanya as soon as he was let go, he didn't hesitate. Bom Bom Bom He just crawled to the pile of the Vedas, He picked up the Bhāgavatam and he placed it on his head [Devotees laughs] and smiles at everyone and all the people there were amazed. We never saw anything like that. Obviously, he is going to be a very great pandit. Then the Vaiṣṇavas noticed what book it was. It wasn't ordinary Veda. He picked up from the whole pile he picked up the Bhāgavatam.

They said "Oh He's going to be a great Vaiṣṇava.

"NITĀI GAUR PREMANANDI!

SACHINANDANA GAURA HARI!

We did get it from Caitanya Mangal. So, all these we take different combining them together as one flowing pastime. You can read anyone you won’t get the same picture as the all combined together. Should we be hopefully by the grace of Lord's mercy, Vaiṣṇavas mercy, author's mercy. Any other question? discipline, succession and all?

Prabhupāda said that when we have in our community installed deity, that it's not recommended to worship deity at home. There shouldn't be other installed deities in the community. Other installed deities should be places behind the main installed deity and the main deity should be worshipped so that the whole community doesn't have the energy diverted. One can have a picture in the home and offer worship but installed deities in our community in all the community we can have.

But if you like in the spiritual community like in the Māyāpur he didn't like the people would like I can worship my deity but I can’t worship the main deity. That's not the system where all the Community worships the presiding deity of the place which is installed as small grihasta deity. It's all the same Lord so we put the deity behind, take the deity in the behind. Yeah! For the people outside of the community it's a different level.  Both are different levels depending on whether they are initiated, whether the deities are installed, what type of deities they are, this can only worked out with the spiritual master,

Other questions?

His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami: If the deities are installed deities and regular worship is going on.  You can have the deities with you can have a brāhmaṇa after you install the deity, how they install the deity by Brāhmaṇa same way. Worshiping deity is like worshiping Kṛṣṇa, anyway you can keep it behind the altar and get installed the detity.  Do the actual system of archana deity wiorship in the house like this brāhmaṇa installed the deity śāligrāma Śilā.
