Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!
Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees! Today we will continue with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book. Today's chapter is entitled as:
Phalaśruti – Understands What Love is and Achieves Ecstatic Love of Kṛṣṇa
Under the section: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s loving dealings with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu
Śrī Gauṛāṅga Līlā Smaraṇa Maṅgala Stotra 69
–By Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura
Translation: I meditate upon Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Strictly following the rules of sannyāsa, He refused to accept the oil offered by Jagadānanda Paṇḍita.
Jayapatākā Swami: Although Jagadānanda Paṇḍita offered scented oil with great love, Lord Caitanya following strict rules of sannyāsa, refused it. This caused great anger to Jagadānanda Paṇḍita.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.121
bhaktapremavaśa bhagavānera bhaktamānabhañjana vā kṛpā-yācñā :—
tṛtīya divase prabhu tāṅra dvāre yāñā
’uṭhaha’ paṇḍita’—kari’ kahena ḍākiyā
Translation: Three days later, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu went to the door of his room and said, “My dear Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, please get up.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya was reciprocating the loving dealings of Jagadānanda Paṇḍita.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.122
bhaktagṛhe bhagavānera svayaṁ upayācakarūpe bhikṣāṅgīkāra :—
‘āji bhikṣā dibā āmāya kariyā randhane
madhyāhne āsiba, ebe yāi daraśane’
Translation: “I want you personally to cook My lunch today. I am going now to see the Lord in the temple. I shall return at noon.”
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya understood that Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was angry out of love. But he would not refuse to do service to Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.123
prabhupremika paṇḍitera prabhura janya bhoga-randhana o samarpaṇa :—
eta bali’ prabhu gelā, paṇḍita uṭhilā
snāna kari’ nānā vyañjana randhana karilā
Translation: After Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu said this and left, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita got up from his bed, bathed and began to cook varieties of vegetables.
Jayapatākā Swami: Because Jagadānanda Paṇḍita had spontaneous love for Lord Caitanya, he got up, bathed and cooked for Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.124
madhyāhna kariyā prabhu āilā bhojane
pāda prakṣālana kari’ dilena āsane
Translation: After finishing His noontime ritualistic duties, the Lord arrived for lunch. Jagadānanda Paṇḍita washed the Lord’s feet and gave the Lord a sitting place.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.125
saghṛta śālyanna kalā-pāte stūpa kailā
kalāra ḍoṅgā bhari’ vyañjana caudike dharilā
Translation: He had cooked fine rice, mixed it with ghee and piled it high on a banana leaf. There were also varieties of vegetables, placed all around in pots made of banana tree bark.
Jayapatākā Swami: This is a very aesthetic way of presenting mahā-prasāda. A banana leaf is said to be better than a silver plate.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.126
anna-vyañjanopari tulasī-mañjarī
jagannāthera piṭhā-pānā āge āne dhari’
Translation: On the rice and vegetables were tulasī flowers, and in front of the Lord were cakes, sweet rice and other prasādam of Jagannātha.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita arranged a very opulent prasāda for Lord Caitanya.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.127
abhinnātmā praṇayapātra bhaktasaha bhaktapremavaśa bhagavānera ekatra āhārecchā :—
prabhu kahe,—“dvitīya-pāte bāḍa’ anna-vyañjana
tomāya āmāya āji ekatra kariba bhojana
Translation: The Lord said, “Spread another leaf with a helping of rice and vegetables so that today you and I may take lunch together.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya very cleverly wanted Jagadānanda Paṇḍita to take his prasāda with Him. Jagadānanda Paṇḍita had been fasting for three days, out of his loving anger.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.128
hasta tuli’ rahena prabhu, nā karena bhojana
tabe paṇḍita kahena kichu saprema vacana
Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu kept His hands raised and would not accept the prasādam until Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, with great affection and love, spoke the following words.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.129
paṇḍitera prabhuprītyukti; paścāt upaveśanāṅgīkāra
“āpane prasāda laha, pāche muñi la-imu
tomāra āgraha āmi kemane khaṇḍimu?”
Translation: “Please first take prasādam Yourself, and I shall eat later. I shall not refuse Your request.”
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.130
prabhukarttṛka paṇḍitera premapācitānna-prasādera stutipūrvaka tadbhāgya-praśaṁsā :—
tabe mahāprabhu sukhe bhojane vasilā
vyañjanera svāda pāñā kahite lāgilā
Translation: In great happiness, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu then accepted the lunch. When He had tasted the vegetables, He again began to speak.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.131
“krodhāveśera pākera haya aiche svāda!
ei ta’ jāniye tomāya kṛṣṇera ’prasāda’
Translation: “Even when you cook in an angry mood,” He said, “the food is very delicious. This shows how pleased Kṛṣṇa is with you.
Jayapatākā Swami: Prasāda cooked by Jagadānanda Paṇḍita in an angry mood was very delicious. Therefore, Lord Caitanya was saying that Kṛṣṇa must have been pleased with his offering.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.132
āpane khāibe kṛṣṇa, tāhāra lāgiyā
tomāra haste pāka karāya uttama kariyā
Translation: “Because He will personally eat the food, Kṛṣṇa makes you cook so nicely.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.133
aiche amṛta-anna kṛṣṇe kara samarpaṇa
tomāra bhāgyera sīmā ke kare varṇana?”
Translation: “You offer such nectarean rice to Kṛṣṇa. Who can estimate the limit of your fortune?”
Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita understood that Krsna in the form of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya was taking the prasāda, therefore he cooked with great devotion.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.134
gaura-sarvasva, gauragataprāṇa paṇḍitera prabhukei sarvakarttṛ-svarūpe jñāna :—
paṇḍita kahe,—“ye khāibe, sei pāka-kartā
āmi-saba—kevala-mātra sāmagrī-āhartā”
Translation: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita replied, “He who will eat has cooked this. As far as I am concerned, I simply collect the ingredients.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita is taking a very humble position and he is saying that a person who will eat it, cooks it, he just gathers the ingredients
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.135
bhaktera abhimāna-bhaye bhagavānera pracura bhojana :—
punaḥ punaḥ paṇḍita nānā vyañjana pariveśe
bhaye kichu nā balena prabhu, khāyena hariṣe
Translation: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita continued to offer the Lord varieties of vegetables. Out of fear, the Lord said nothing but continued eating happily.
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya was afraid that He would make Jagadānanda Paṇḍita angry again. So He ate whatever was served.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.136
āgraha kariyā paṇḍita karāilā bhojana
āra dina haite bhojana haila daśa-guṇa
Translation: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita eagerly forced the Lord to eat so much that He ate ten times more than on other days.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.137
bāra-bāra prabhu uṭhite karena mana
sei-kāle paṇḍita pariveśe vyañjana
Translation: Again and again when the Lord wished to get up, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita would feed Him more vegetables.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.138
kichu balite nārena prabhu, khāyena tarāse
nā khāile jagadānanda karibe upavāse
Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu dared not forbid him to feed Him more. He just continued eating, fearful that Jagadānanda would fast if He stopped.
Jayapatākā Swami: Since Jagadānanda Paṇḍita had not eaten for three days, Lord Caitanya was fearful that if He did not eat whatever he had given, then Jagadānanda Paṇḍita would fast again.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.139
pariveśana-virāmārtha paṇḍitake kātarabhāve anurodha
tabe prabhu kahena kari’ vinaya-sammāna
‘daśa-guṇa khāoyāilā ebe kara samādhāna’
Translation: At last the Lord respectfully submitted, “My dear Jagadānanda, you have already made Me eat ten times more than I am used to. Now please stop.”
Jayapatākā Swami: They tell us that the system for feeding the guests is that you should give them more, even if they say no, and if they say no very forcefully, you should still feed them. Even if they tell you, roar and put you their hands over their plate, then you can let them go!
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.140
ācamanānte prabhura paṇḍitake svasammukhe bhojane anurodha :—
tabe mahāprabhu uṭhi’ kailā ācamana
paṇḍita ānila, mukhavāsa, mālya, candana
Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu stood up and washed His hands and mouth, while Jagadānanda Paṇḍita brought spices, a garland and sandalwood pulp.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya, He wanted to see Jagadānanda Paṇḍita eating in front of Him.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.141
candanādi lañā prabhu vasilā sei sthāne
‘āmāra āge āji tumi karaha bhojane’
Translation: Accepting the sandalwood pulp and garland, the Lord sat down and said, “Now, in front of Me, you must eat.”
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.142
vāmyasvabhāva paṇḍitera aiśvarya buddhite prabhura maryādā-saṁrakṣaṇa, prabhuke viśrāme gamanārtha-prārthanā :—
paṇḍita kahe,—“prabhu yāi’ karuna viśrāma
mui, ebe la-iba prasāda kari’ samādhāna
Translation: Jagadānanda replied, “My Lord, You go take rest. I shall take prasādam after I finish making some arrangements.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.143
govindera saṅgī prabhubhṛtya rāmāi o raghunāthabhaṭṭera sei bhoga randhanānte prabhu-prasāda-prāpti :—
rasuira kārya kairāche rāmāi, raghunātha
iṅhā sabāya dite cāhi kichu vyañjana-bhāta”
Translation: “Rāmāi Paṇḍita and Raghunātha Bhaṭṭa did the cooking, and I want to give them some rice and vegetables.”
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was making some excuse why he should do some service first and then eat.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.144
paṇḍitera bhojana-saṁvāda-jñāpanārtha govindake ādeśa diyā prabhura gṛhe gamana :—
prabhu kahena,—“govinda, tumi ihāṅi rahibā
paṇḍita bhojana kaile, āmāre kahibā”
Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu then told Govinda, “You remain here. When the Paṇḍita has taken his food, come inform Me.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya wanted to make sure that Jagadānanda Paṇḍita took prasāda.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.145
prabhusukhai-kaniṣṭha paṇḍitera ātmendriya-prītivāñchā nā kariyā govindake prabhu-sevanārtha preraṇa :—
eta kahi’ mahāprabhu karilā gamana
govindere paṇḍita kichu kahena vacana
Translation: After Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu had said this and left, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita spoke to Govinda.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.146
“tumi śīghra yāha karite pāda-samvāhane
kahiha,—’paṇḍita ebe vasila bhojane’
Translation: “Go quickly and massage the Lord’s feet,” he said. “You may tell Him, ‘The Paṇḍita has just sat down to take his meal.’
Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita is concerned that Lord Caitanya’s service would not be done by Govinda.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.147
prabhura nidrānte prabhūcchiṣṭa-sammānārtha āsite anurodha
tomāre prabhura ‘śeṣa’ rākhimu dhariyā

Translation: “I shall keep some remnants of the Lord’s food for you. When He is asleep, come and take your portion.”
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.148
sakalera baṇṭanapūrvaka prabhūcchiṣṭa-sammāna :—
rāmāi, nandāi āra govinda, raghunātha
sabāre bāṅṭiyā dilā prabhura vyañjana-bhāta
Translation: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita thus distributed remnants of the Lord’s food to Rāmāi, Nandāi, Govinda and Raghunātha Bhaṭṭa.
Jayapatākā Swami: Remnants of Lord Caitanya’s prasāda was considered as mahā-prasāda. Everyone was eager to accept that.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.149
svayaṁ prabhūcchiṣṭa-grahaṇa :—
āpane prabhura ‘śeṣa’ karilā bhojana
tabe govindere prabhu pāṭhāilā punaḥ
Translation: He also personally ate the remnants of food left by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Then the Lord again sent Govinda.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, after Jagadānanda Paṇḍita ate the remnants of Lord Caitanya, Govinda could go and report to Lord Caitanya.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.150

Translation: The Lord told him, “Go see whether Jagadānanda Paṇḍita is eating. Then quickly return and let Me know.”
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya wanted to be sure that Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was eating.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.151
paṇḍitera bhojanānte prabhura śayana; bhaktera tṛpti vā santoṣei prabhura nijakārya-samādhāna jñāna o sukha

jagadānande-prabhute prema cale ei-mate
satyabhāmā-kṛṣṇe yaiche śuni bhāgavate
Translation: The affectionate loving exchanges between Jagadānanda Paṇḍita and Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu continued in this manner, exactly like the exchanges between Satyabhāmā and Lord Kṛṣṇa related in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was like a lefthand queen and his relationship with Lord Caitanya was like Satyabhāmā’s relationship with Lord Kṛṣṇa.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.153
jagadānandera saubhāgyera ke kahibe sīmā?
jagadānandera saubhāgyera teṅha se upamā
Translation: Who can estimate the limit of Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s fortune? He himself is the example of his own great fortune.
Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita alone can be used to exemplify His great mercy. He got such mercy in dealing with Lord Caitanya, that he could not be compared with anyone else.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.154
paṇḍitera ‘prema-vivartta’-śravaṇe gaurakṛṣṇe premodaya
jagadānandera ‘prema-vivarta’ śune yei jana
premera ’svarūpa’ jāne, pāya prema-dhana
Translation: Anyone who hears about the loving exchanges between Jagadānanda Paṇḍita and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, or who reads Jagadānanda’s book Prema-vivarta, can understand what love is. Moreover, he achieves ecstatic love of Kṛṣṇa.
Haribol!
Purport: The word vivarta means accepting something to be the opposite of what it appears. Here, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita appeared very angry, but this anger was a manifestation of his great love for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Prema-vivarta is also the name of a book written by Jagadānanda Paṇḍita. Therefore the author of Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī, uses the words prema-vivarta to refer to one who reads the book or hears about Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s loving dealings with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. In either case, such a person very soon achieves love of Kṛṣṇa.
Jayapatākā Swami: We have used some of the examples of Prema-vivarta of Jagadānanda Paṇḍita in the Caitanya Book, and we visit some of the places in our Navadvīpa Maṇḍala Parikramā which are mentioned by Jagadānanda Paṇḍita.
In one place, in Godrumadvīpa the devotees are so ecstatic that they start rolling on the dust. So, this book is very wonderful and it tells the special pastimes of Jagadānanda Paṇḍita and Lord Caitanya. Svarūpa Dāmodara admonished Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, why are you writing such confidential things, but Jagadānanda Paṇḍita said whatever I feel like I will write.
Haribol!
Thus ends the chapter entitled, Phalaśruti – Understands what love is and achieves ecstatic love of Kṛṣṇa
