20230220 Jagadānanda Paṇḍita in Angry Love Breaks the Jug of Oil

The following is a Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book Compilation given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on february 20th,2023 in Śrī Dhāma Māyāpur, India.

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees! Today we will continue with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book. Today's chapter is entitled as:

Jagadānanda Paṇḍita in Angry Love Breaks the Jug of Oil
Under the section: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s loving dealings with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.102

kāñcanapallī haite candana-taila saṁgraha evaṁ purīte giyā prabhura vyavahārārtha govindake pradāna :—

śivānanda-sena-gṛhe yāñā rahilā
‘candanādi’ taila tāhāṅ eka-mātrā kailā

Translation: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita stayed at the house of Śivānanda Sena for some time, and they prepared about sixteen seers of scented sandalwood oil.

Jayapatākā Swami: A seer is about 900 grams, 900 grams’ times 16 seers of sandalwood is a very large amount.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.103

sugandhi kariyā taila gāgarī bhariyā
nīlācale lañā āilā yatana kariyā

Translation: They filled a large earthen pot with the aromatic oil, and with great care Jagadānanda Paṇḍita brought it to Nīlācala, Jagannātha Purī.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sandalwood oil is very expensive and it is a kind of very opulent oil.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.104

govindera ṭhāñi taila dhariyā rākhilā
“prabhu-aṅge diha’ taila” govinde kahilā

Translation: This oil was placed in the care of Govinda, and Jagadānanda requested him, “Please rub this oil on the body of the Lord.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Rubbing sandalwood oil would be very cooling for the body.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.105

prabhuke govindera jagadānandecchā-jñāpana :—

tabe prabhu-ṭhāñi govinda kaila nivedana
‘jagadānanda candanādi-taila āniyāchena

Translation: Govinda therefore told Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, “Jagadānanda Paṇḍita has brought some scented sandalwood oil.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.106

jagadānandera aprākṛta naravapu prabhura prati aprākṛta atula-prema :—

tāṅra icchā,—prabhu alpa mastake lāgāya
pitta-vāyu-vyādhi-prakopa śānta hañā yāya

Translation: “It is his desire that Your Lordship apply a little of this oil on Your head so that blood pressure due to bile and air will be considerably diminished.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sandalwood oil has a very medicinal effect.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.107

eka-kalasa sugandhi taila gauḍete kariyā
ihāṅ āniyāche bahu yatana kariyā”

Translation: “He prepared a large jug of it in Bengal, and with great care he has brought it here.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Govinda dāsa is explaining how Jagadānanda Paṇḍita had brought the oil from Bengal and very carefully he brought it to Jagannātha Purī.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.108

jagadguru lokaśikṣaka ācāryarūpī prabhura ādarśa-ācāra-pradarśana :—

prabhu kahe,—“sannyāsīra nāhi taile adhikāra
tāhāte sugandhi taila,—parama dhikkāra!

Translation: The Lord replied, “A sannyāsī has no use for oil, especially perfumed oil such as this. Take it out immediately.”

Purport: According to Raghunandana Bhaṭṭācārya, the spokesman for the smārta regulative principles:

“One who smears oil on his body while observing a vow in conjunction with a ritual, while bathing in the morning, while performing the śrāddha ceremony, or on Dvādaśī day may as well pour wine over his body. Therefore, oil should be rejected.” This word vrata (vow) is sometimes understood to refer to the sannyāsa-vrata. Raghunandana Bhaṭṭācārya has also said in his book Tithi-tattva:

This means that clarified butter (ghee), mustard oil, floral oil and boiled oil may be used only by gṛhasthas, householders.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, although the oil was brought by Jagadānanda Paṇḍita for Lord Caitanya, Lord Caitanya was saying it was not suitable for a sannyāsī, it is on the smārta rules.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.109

paṇḍitake upalakṣya kariyā jagadguru prabhukarttṛka sādhakake sarvotkṛṣṭa upakaraṇadvārā ekamātra bhoktā īśvarerai svārasikī sevā-kartavyopadeśa ; tāhātei jīvera sevā-śrama-sārthakatā :—

jagannāthe deha’ taila,—dīpa yena jvale
tāra pariśrama haiba parama-saphale

Translation: “Deliver this oil to the temple of Jagannātha, where it may be burned in the lamps. In this way, Jagadānanda’s labor in manufacturing the oil will be perfectly successful.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya while refusing the oil, He gave a method of using the oil in Kṛṣṇa’s service.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.110

jagadānandake govindera prabhura ādeśa-vāṇī-jñāpana, jagadānandera praṇayābhimāna-krodha :—

ei kathā govinda jagadānandere kahila
mauna kari’ rahila paṇḍita, kichu nā kahila

Translation: When Govinda informed Jagadānanda Paṇḍita of this message, Jagadānanda remained silent, not saying even a word.

Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Prabhu is an incarnation of Satyabhāmā, therefore, he would get angry very easily.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.111

pare govindera punarāya prabhuke jagadānandecchā-jñāpana :—

dina daśa gele govinda jānāila āra-bāra
paṇḍitera icchā,—‘taila prabhu kare aṅgīkāra’

Translation: When ten days had passed, Govinda again told Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, “It is the desire of Jagadānanda Paṇḍita that Your Lordship accept the oil.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Govinda dāsa communicated the desire of Jagadānanda Paṇḍita again.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.112

jagadguru lokaśikṣaka prabhura sādhaka vā ācāryake ātmendriya tarpaṇārtha bhogaceṣṭāra anaucitya-śikṣā-dāna :—

śuni’ prabhu kahe kichu sakrodha vacana
mardaniyā eka rākha karite mardana!

Translation: When the Lord heard this, He angrily said, “Why not keep a masseur to massage Me?

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya as the sīkṣā-guru, He was practicing very strict method of sannyāsa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.113

ei sukha lāgi’ āmi kariluṅ sannyāsa!
āmāra ‘sarva-nāśa’—tomā-sabāra ‘parihāsa’

Translation: “Have I taken sannyāsa for such happiness? Accepting this oil would bring My ruination, and all of you would laugh.

Purport: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu declared Himself a strict sannyāsī. A sannyāsī is not supposed to take help from anyone. Retaining a masseur to give Him massages would indicate His dependence on others. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu wanted to follow very strictly the principle of not accepting anyone’s help for His bodily comfort.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya was following this very strict standard of sannyāsa life, by which Jagadānanda Paṇḍita would obviously become angry.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.114

nijendriyatarpaṇa-sambhogapriya yativeṣīke garhaṇa :—

pathe yāite taila-gandha mora yei pābe
‘dārī sannyāsī’ kari’ āmāre kahibe

Translation: “If someone passing on the road smelled this oil on My head, he would think Me a dārī sannyāsī, a tantric sannyāsī who keeps women.”

Jayapatākā Swami: In North India there are so called sannyāsīs who worship demigoddesses and they keep women.

So, Lord Caitanya is saying that, “if they smell scented oil on Me, then they may think I am such a sannyāsī.”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.115

prabhura roṣahetu govinda nirvāka : —

śuni prabhura vākya govinda mauna karilā
prātaḥ-kāle jagadānanda prabhu-sthāne āilā

Translation: Hearing these words of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Govinda remained silent. The next morning, Jagadānanda went to see the Lord.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.116

svayaṁ sarvavastura bhoktā haiyāo jagadānandera āgamane loka-śikṣaka ācāryarūpe prabhura sādhaka vā ācāryake indriyasukha-tyāga vā ādarśa-vairāgyācāra-pradarśana :—

prabhu kahe,—“paṇḍita, taila ānilā gauḍa ha-ite
āmi ta’ sannyāsī,—taila nā pāri la-ite

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu said to Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, “My dear Paṇḍita, you have brought Me some oil from Bengal, but since I am in the renounced order, I cannot accept it.

Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita understood who Lord Caitanya was, and He wanted to serve Lord Caitanya, but this reply frustrated his desire to serve.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.117

paṇḍitake upadeśacchale sarvacidupakaraṇa-bhoktā bhagavānera sarvot-kṛṣṭa-dravyadvārā sevātei jīvera sevā-sāphalya-śikṣādāna :—

jagannāthe deha’ lañā dīpa yena jvale
tomāra sakala śrama ha-ibe saphale”

Translation: “Deliver the oil to the temple of Jagannātha so that it may be burned in the lamps. Thus your labor in preparing the oil will be fruitful.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, offering the oil to Lord Jagannātha, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, would be a useful offering.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.118

prabhupremika paṇḍitera prabhuprati praṇayābhimāna-roṣa :

paṇḍita kahe,—‘ke tomāre kahe mithyā vāṇī
āmi gauḍa haite taila kabhu nāhi āni’

Translation: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita replied, “Who tells You all these false stories? I never brought any oil from Bengal.”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.119

prabhu-sammukhe tailapātra-bhaṅga :—

eta bali’ ghara haite taila-kalasa lañā
prabhura āge āṅgināte phelilā bhāṅgiyā

Translation: After saying this, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita took the jug of oil from the room and threw it down before Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu in the courtyard and broke it.

Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita had a very loving relationship with Lord Caitanya, and being unable to accept this reply of Lord Caitanya, he broke the pot.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 12.120

svagṛhe āpanāke āvaddhakaraṇa :—

taila bhāṅgi’ sei pathe nija-ghara giyā
śuiyā rahilā ghare kapāṭa khiliyā

Translation: After breaking the jug, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita returned to his residence, bolted the door and lay down.

Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was so frustrated, but he wanted to offer a simple service to Lord Caitanya. But Lord Caitanya taking the excuse of being a sannyāsī, did not accept Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s offering. So, he said, I didn’t bring you any oil from Bengal and broke the oil pot in front of the Lord and then he lay down in his room, very frustrated.
