Introduction: So, continuing with Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book compilation, today’s chapter is entitled:

Assurance of Sudarśana's Protection, Entrance into Orissa and Eating Jagadānanda's Cooking

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.130

rāmacandra khāṅna-kartṛka prabhura gamanera janya naukā-ānayana—

henai samaye kahe rāmacandra khāṅna
“naukā āsi' ghāṭe prabhu, haila vidyamāna”

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time Rāmacandra Khān came and said, “the boat has arrived at the ghāṭa, O my Lord.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.131

prabhura naukāya ārohaṇa o nīlācalābhimukhe yātrā—

tata-kṣaṇe ‘hari’ bali’ śrī-gaurasundara
uṭhilena giyā prabhu naukāra upara

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time Lord Śrī Gaurasundara chanted, “Haribol! Haribol!”, saying Hari He, the Lord entered the boat and sat down.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.132

śubha-dṛṣṭye lokere vidāya diyā ghare
calilena prabhu nīlācala—nija-pure

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the Lord Caitanya gave His auspicious glance on the assembled people and bid them farewell and sent them home. And then He departed for His own abode of Nīlācala.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.133

naukāpari mukundera kīrtana—

prabhura ājñāya śrī-mukunda mahāśaya
kīrtana karena prabhu naukāya vijaya

Jayapatākā Swami: By the order of the Lord Caitanya, Śrī Mukunda dutta Mahāśaya he performed kīrtana as the Lord departed on the boat.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.134

nābikera bhaya—

abodha nāvika bale,—“haila saṁśaya
bujhilāṅa āji āra prāṇa nāhi raya

Jayapatākā Swami: The foolish boatman said, “I am in doubt. I think we will not survive beyond day.” So the foolish boatmen he didn’t know the actual position of Lord Caitanya therefore he was afraid and the details of his fear is given below:

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.135

kūlete uṭhile vāghe laiyā palāya
jalete paḍile kumbhīrete dhari' khāya

Jayapatākā Swami: “If we reach the shore, and if we get out the tigers will take us away and run, and if we fall in the water, the crocodiles will grab us and eat us.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.136

nirantara e pānīte ḍākāita phire
pāilei dhana-prāṇa dui nāśa kare

Jayapatākā Swami: Constantly in these waters there are dacoits, criminal thieves moving about. If they catch anyone, they take their wealth and their life.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): When Śrī Gaurasundara boarded Rāmacandra Khān's boat, Mukunda began to chant the glories of Kṛṣṇa. At that time the foolish boatman became full of anxiety as he thought about his imminent destruction. If one travels through the insurmountable forests of Sunderban, one would generally encounter tigers on land and crocodiles in the water. Apart from this, many pirates would plunder and kill in those waterways. That is why the boatman told everyone to stop the kīrtana. Another reason for the boatman's anxiety was that if he did not obey Rāmacandra Khān's order, that is, if he did not take Mahāprabhu to Orissa, then Rāmacandra Khān would kill him. Moreover, there was every chance of being seen by the enemy camp on the way to Orissa. If they performed kīrtana while sailing, the enemy soldiers would follow the sound of the kīrtana and attack. Therefore there was danger in the boat, there was danger on the land, and there was even danger of drowning. There was danger from Rāmacandra Khān, there was danger from the enemy king, and there was danger from the subordinates of Rāmacandra Khān. If pirates or the enemy camp heard the tumultuous sound of the kīrtana, then they would attack.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this was the anxiety of the boatmen, He didn’t realise the potency of Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.137

eteke yāvata uḍiyāra deśe pāi
tāvata nīraba hao sakala gosāñi!”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Therefore, until we reach Orissa, please remain silent!” O all of your Gosāñi, until we reach Orissa, please remain silent!”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.138

nābikera vākye sakale saṅkucita haileo prabhura premonmāda o huṅkāra—

saṅkoca haila sabe nāvikera bole
prabhu se bhāsena niravadhi prema-jale

Jayapatākā Swami: When they heard the boatman’s words, they became somewhat anxious. But the Lord Caitanya, however, continually floated in the waters of ecstatic love.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.139

kṣaṇeke uṭhilā prabhu kariyā huṅkāra
sabāre balena,—“kene bhaya kara kāra

Jayapatākā Swami: After a while the Lord Caitanya stood up and roared loudly “Haribol!” He told everyone, “Why are you afraid?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.140

prabhura abhaya-vāṇī-vaiṣṇava-rakṣaka’ sudarśana’ sarvatra virājamāna—

ei nā sammukhe sudarśana-cakra phire
vaiṣṇava-janera niravadhi vighna hare

Jayapatākā Swami: “Can't you see the Sudarśana cakra escorting us? It always removes the obstacles faced by Vaiṣṇavas.”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (9.4.28) it is stated: “Being very pleased by the unalloyed devotion of Mahārāja Ambarīṣa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead gave the King His disc, which is fearful to enemies and which always protects the devotee from enemies and adversities.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.141

prabhura sakalake niścinte kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtanārtha ādeśa—

kichu cintā nahi, kara kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtana
torā ki nā dekha-hera phire sudarśana”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Don’t worry. There is no any cause of worries. Chant the glories of Kṛṣṇa in the saṅkīrtana. Don't you see Sudarśana guarding us, accompanying us?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.142

śuniyā prabhura vākya sarva bhakta-gaṇa
ānande lāgilā sabe karite kīrtana

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the Lord Caitanya's instructions, all the devotees joyfully began to perform kīrtana.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.143

bhaktakṣaka sudarśana nitya virājamāna thākāya kāhārao bhaktalaṅghana-sāmarthya nāi—

vyapadeśe mahāprabhu kahena sabāre
“niravadhi sudarśana bhakta-rakṣā kare

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu used this situation to teach everyone, “Sudarśana cakra continuously protects the devotees.”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): In the Vāmana Purāṇa, Chapter Seventy-nine, it is stated: “O Lord of lords, greatest of all living beings, this best of weapons, Sudarśana, destroys all other weapons. It has twelve spokes and is nondifferent from the mind.” In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (9.4.48) it is stated: “As fire in the forest immediately burns to ashes an angry snake, so, by the previous order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, His disc, the Sudarśana cakra, immediately burnt to ashes the created demon to protect the Lord's devotee.” “O all-powerful one, please take this best of weapons and without hesitation defeat the enemies of the demigods. This weapon, worshiped by the King of the demigods, cannot be frustrated. On the strength of my austerities I wield it as part of my body.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.144

ye pāpiṣṭha vaiṣṇavera pakṣa hiṁsā kare
sudarśana-agnite se pāpī puḍi' mare

Jayapatākā Swami: “Any sinful person who attacks violently or acts against a Vaiṣṇava, the fire of Sudarśana burns to ashes that sinful person.”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): Śrī Gaurasundara felt no anxiety as He declared, “Sudarśana cakra constantly protects the devotees. Sinful people who attack a Vaiṣṇava will be burnt to death by the fire of Sudarśana.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.145

viṣṇu-cakra sudarśana rakṣaka thākite
kāra śakti āche bhakta-janere laṅghite”

Jayapatākā Swami: “When Lord Viṣṇu's weapon Sudarśana cakra is there protecting the devotees, who has the power to attack the devotees?” In the Nārada-pañcarātra (1.2.34) it is stated: “Lord Janārdana is not content even after engaging Sudarśana to protect His devotees, so He personally goes to see and protect them.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.146

ei-mata śrī-gauracandrera gopya-kathā
tāna kṛpā yāre sei bujhaye sarvathā

Jayapatākā Swami: So in this Lord Śrī Gauracandra revealed confidential topics, who is blessed by Him can actually understand these confidential topics. Someone who has the mercy of Lord Caitanya can understand that actually Kṛṣṇa is protecting his devotees personally or through the Sudarśana cakra.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.147

saṅkīrtana karite karite prabhura utkala-deśe praveśa o prayāga-ghāṭe avataraṇa—

hena-mate mahāprabhu saṅkīrtana-rase
praveśa hailā āsi' śrī-utkala-deśe

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu merged in the mellow of saṅkīrtana chanting the glories of Kṛṣṇa, He entered the kingdom of Orissa, which is known as utkala.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.148

uttarilā giyā naukāśrī-prayāga-ghāṭe
naukā haite mahāprabhu uṭhilena taṭe

Jayapatākā Swami: When the boat arrived at Śrī Prayāga-ghāṭa, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu stepped out of the boat onto the shore.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.149

oḍradeśe praveśa—

praveśa karilā gauracandra oḍra-deśe
ihā ye śunaye se bhāsaye prema-rase

Jayapatākā Swami: Anyone who hears about Lord Gauracandra’s arrival in Orissa floats in the mellows of ecstatic love.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.150

ānande ṭhākura oḍra-deśa hai' pāra
sarva-gaṇa-sahita hailā namaskāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Very blissfully Lord Caitanya arrived in Orissa with all His associates He offered obeisances. So we can see how the devotees are always being protected by Sudarśana cakra when they are engaging in saṅkīrtana. Although there was so many natural dangers while travelling by boat to Orissa – tigers, crocodiles, pirates, enemy’s armies. various dangers Lord Caitanya said no fear, the Sudarśana cakra is protecting us therefore they did loud kīrtana the whole way Haribol!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.151

gaṅgāghāṭe prabhura snāna—

sei sthāne āche tāra `gaṅgā-ghāṭa' nāma
tahiṅ gauracandra prabhu karilena snāna

Jayapatākā Swami: So at the place which is known as Gaṅgā-ghāṭa, there Lord Gauracandra He took His bath. We see that Lord Caitanya has a very special relationship with Ganges, even though this ghāṭa was known as Gaṅgā-ghāṭa although it may be far away from the Ganges still Lord Caitanya took His bath there.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.152

yudhiṣṭhira-sthāpita maheśa tathi āche
snāna kari’ tāṅre namaskarilena pāche

Jayapatākā Swami: After taking His bath, Lord Caitanya offered His obeisances to the deity of Śiva, Maheśa who was established there by Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira. The devas headed by Maheśa, Mahādeva, they are all devotees of the Lord . Lord Caitanya is reciprocating and offering Maheśa his humble obeisances, although, He is the Lord of Maheśa. He is acting as devotee to teach us we should also respect Śiva and other devas even though we don’t want any material benediction from them but we respect them as servitors of the Lord.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.153

oḍra-deśe praveśa karilā gauracandra
gaṇa-saha hailena parama ānanda

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gauracandra and His associates were most happy and were transcendentally joyful to have entered Orissa.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.154

bhaktagaṇake devasthāne rākhiyā sannyāsirūpī prabhura prati-dvāre bhikṣā-līlā—

eka deva-sthāne prabhu thuiyā sabāre
āpane calilā prabhu bhikṣā karibāre

Jayapatākā Swami: In one temple Lord Caitanya left all left His associates and He went alone to beg alms.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.155

yāra ghare giyā prabhu upasanna haya
se vigraha dekhite kāhāra moha naya

Jayapatākā Swami: Whoever’s house the Lord Caitanya went to beg from, the people there became enchanted on seeing His transcendental form.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.156

āṅcala pātena prabhu śrī-gaurasundara
sabei taṇḍula āni' deyena satvara

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Śrī Gaurasundara held out His cloth for alms, brought grains and everyone immediately placed grains in cloth.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.157

bhakṣya dravya utkṛṣṭa ye thāke yāra ghare
sabei santoṣe āni’ deyena prabhure

Jayapatākā Swami: They offered Lord Caitanya with great satisfaction finest eatables they had in their house, they brought and offered to the Lord.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.158

‘jagatera annapūrṇā’ ye lakṣmīra nāma
se lakṣmī māgaye yāṅra pāda-padme sthāna

Jayapatākā Swami: Lakṣmīdevī, who is known as Annapūrṇā, the supplier of food to the entire universe, that goddess of fortune begs a place at the lotus feet of the Lord.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.159

hena prabhu āpane sakala ghare ghare
nyāsi-rūpe bhikṣā-chale jīva dhanya kare

Jayapatākā Swami: That very Lord Caitanya personally delivered the living entities on the pretext of begging as a sannyāsī from door to door. the pretext of begging alms, as a sannyāsī from door to door.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (1.16.33) it is stated: “Lakṣmījī, the goddess of fortune, whose glance of grace was sought by demigods like Brahmā and for whom they surrendered many a day unto the Personality of Godhead, gave up her own abode in the forest of lotus flowers and engaged herself in the service of the lotus feet of the Lord.” This was Śrī Caitanyadeva's pastime of begging alms door to door.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.160

bhaktagaṇa samīpe bhikṣālabdha-dravyasaha prabhura pratyāvartana—

bhikṣā kari' prabhu hai' haraṣita mana
āilena yathā vasi' āche bhakta-gaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: After begging alms the Lord Caitanya became very joyful and He returned to where the devotees were sitting.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.161

bhikṣā dravya dekhi’ sabe lāgilā hāsite
sabei balena,—“prabhu, pāribā poṣite”

Jayapatākā Swami: When the devotees saw the foodstuffs that Lord Caitanya collected has alms, they began to laugh and said, “O Lord, You will be able to maintain us.”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): […] Just as Śrī Gaurasundara acted as the maintainer of the devotees by nourishing their spiritual lives and removing their obstacles, His servants also do the same for His service. This fact cannot be understood by the pseudo-devotee, so-called-Vaiṣṇava prākṛta-sahajiyās.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.162

jagadānandera randhana o sakalera sahita prabhura bhojana—

santoṣe jagadānanda karilā randhana
sabāra saṁhati prabhu karilā bhojana

Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita with great satisfaction, He cooked, and the Lord Caitanya along with all the devotees ate prasāda. We see how the devotees are very blissful to serve the Lord and how the Lord took the prasāda along with the devotees.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.163

sarva-rātri sei grāme kari’ saṅkīrtana
ūṣaḥkāle mahāprabhu karilā gamana

Jayapatākā Swami: They chanted the congregational chanting of the glories of the Lord the entire night in that village. Early in the morning Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu departed. So this was the pastime of Lord Caitanya chanting the holy name in the night and leaving early in the morning.
