Introduction: Today Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya pastimes class:

Madness Due to Separation on the Path to Nīlācala

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.110

nīlācala-pathe prabhura vipralambhonmāda— niravadhi jagannātha-prati ārti kari' āisena saba patha āpanā' pāsari'

Jayapatākā Swami: For the entire journey, the Lord Caitanya prayed to Lord Jagannātha and on the road He forgot Himself.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.111

kāre bali’ rātri dina pathera sañcāra kibā jala, kibā sthala, kibā pārāpāra

Jayapatākā Swami: He wasn’t aware what people call as ‘night’ or ‘day’ or what is the way of travel – through water or land or how to cross over whether He is on this side or that side. Lord Caitanya was in complete ecstasy of love of Godhead and He was not aware of the outside world. He is only thinking about Lord Jagannātha.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.112

kichu nāhi jāne prabhu ḍubi' prema-rase
priyavarga rākhe niravadhi rahi’ pāśe

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya didn’t know anything, He was submerged in the ecstasy of pure love of Kṛṣṇa. His dear associates always stayed by His side and were protecting Him constantly.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.113

ye āveśa mahāprabhu karena prakāśa
tāhā ke kahite pāre vine vedavyāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was manifesting such ecstasy other than Vedavyāsa who else can describe those symptoms?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.114

īśvarera caritra bujhite śakti kāra
kakhana ki-rūpe kṛṣṇa karena vihāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Who has the ability to understand the character of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. How Lord Kṛṣṇa and in when and in what way He will perform His pastimes who can understand it?

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): The foolishness that ignorant people display by accepting Śṛgāla Vāsudeva of Rāḍha-deśa or various living entities forced to enjoy the fruits of their karma in present day Bengal as the Supreme Lord, as the spiritual master of the entire world, as the authority on the synthesis of all religions, or as the ācārya of the present age is certainly an exhibition of their utter weakness. As a result of the impersonal conceptions found in pañcopāsanā (the process of worshiping the five deities Viṣṇu, Śiva, Durgā, Gaṇeśa, and Sūrya), the acceptance of human beings as God has gradually developed in Kali-yuga. But svayam-rūpa Kṛṣṇacandra manifested His own Śrī Caitanya pastimes to distribute love for Kṛṣṇa to all living entities. The attempt to accept as God human beings who imitate Śrī Caitanya is an act of foolishness. Svayam-rūpa Kṛṣṇacandra does not give those whose hearts are polluted the power to realize His Gaura pastimes, which are meant for instructing all. Without the mercy of Śrī Nityānanda no one has the qualification to serve Śrī Gaurasundara, to understand Him, or to attain love of Kṛṣṇa. In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (4.9.17) it is stated: “My Lord, O Supreme Lord, You are the supreme personified form of all benediction. Therefore, for one who abides in Your devotional service with no other desire, worshiping Your lotus feet is better than becoming king and lording it over a kingdom. That is the benediction of worshiping Your lotus feet.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.115

ekamātra nityānandai ihāra marmajña—

kāre vā karena ārti, kāndena vā kāre
e marma jānite nityānanda śakti dhare

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda has the power to understand why the Lord lament and why does He cry. This secret is only known to Lord Nityānanda and those who are empowered to understand.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.116

nija-bhakti-rase ḍubi’ vaikuṇṭhera rāya
āpanā nā jāne prabhu āpana-līlāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya, the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha by submerging Himself in mellows of His own spiritual love, His devotional service to the Lord. Lord Caitanya doesn’t know His own pastime because of His ecstasy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.117

āpanei jagannātha bhāvena āpane
āpane kariyā ārti laoyāyena jane

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord Himself is Lord Jagannātha and He contemplates on Himself. He experiences His lamentation and at the same time He helps others.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.118

prabhura kṛpāya aparera nikaṭa marma-prakāśa—

yadi kṛpā-dṛṣṭi nā karena jīva-prati
tabe kāra āche tāne jānite śakati

Jayapatākā Swami: If the Lord Caitanya does not glance mercifully upon the conditioned living entities, who has the power to understand Him?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.119

nityānandādi-priyavarga-saha bhojana—bhojana-kāleo kṛṣṇānusandhāna-līlātanmayatā—

nityānanda-ādi saba priyavarga laiyā
bhojana karite prabhu vasilena giyā

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord Caitanya would sit down to take His meals along with Lord Nityānanda and others, His dear associates.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.120

kichu-mātra anna prabhu parigraha kari'
uṭhilena huṅkāra kariyā gaurahari

Jayapatākā Swami: After the Lord took a morsel of rice, Lord Gaurahari would stand up and loudly roar.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.121

kata dūra jagannātha?—

āviṣṭa hailā prabhu kari’ ācamana
“kata dūra jagannātha?” bale ghane ghana

Jayapatākā Swami: As Lord Caitanya became overwhelmed in transcendental ecstasy as He washed His hands and mouth. He repeatedly and intensely asked, “How far is Jagannātha Purī?”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): If Śrī Gaurahari does not glance mercifully on the conditioned souls, they can never become Vaiṣṇavas by becoming liberated from their conditional life. That is why Mahāprabhu personally displayed the affliction of separation from the Lord and ascertained the essential characteristics of the object of worship. Śrī Gaurasundara is Lord Jagannātha Himself. By being continually forgetful of this fact, He did not allow unqualified people to understand this. For otherwise unqualified devotees would consider Him as simply a Māyāvādī, and then they would themselves take to the path of Māyāvāda. That is why He did not reveal to everyone that all of His other manifestations are included in His manifestation as a devotee.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Gaurahari would not display to others His being Kṛṣṇa because people may consider that He is Māyāvādīs. Since the Māyāvādī address each other as Nārāyaṇa. So He took the role as the devotee and as a devotees He was feeling separation from Himself.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.122

mukundera kīrtana, prabhura adbhuta nṛtya, chatrabhoga-vāsīra saubhāgya—

mukunda lāgilā mātra kīrtana karite
ārambhilā vaikuṇṭhera īśvara nācite

Jayapatākā Swami: As soon as Mukunda dutta began to perform kīrtana, Lord Caitanya, the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha began to dance.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.123

puṇyavanta yata yata chatrabhoga-vāsīsabe
dekhe nṛtya kare vaikuṇṭha-vilāsī

Jayapatākā Swami: All the pious persons of the province of Chatrabhoga watched how the Lord who enjoys pastimes in Vaikuṇṭha danced.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.124

sāttvika vikāra-samūhera yugapat prakāśa—

aśru, kampa, huṅkāra, pulaka, stambha, gharma
kata haya, ke jāne se vikārera marma

Jayapatākā Swami: Who can understand the mystery of the Lord Caitanya's display of transcendental transformations of ecstatic love like crying, shivering, loud roaring, hairs standing on end, being stunned, and perspiring?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.125

kibā se adbhuta nayanera prema-dhāra
bhādra-māse ye-hena gaṅgāra avatāra

Jayapatākā Swami: The wonderful stream of loving tears that flowed from His eyes resembled the descent of the Ganges in the month of Bhādra [during the monsoon season].

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.126

pāka diyā nṛtya karite nayane chuṭe jala
tāhātei loka snāna karila sakala

Jayapatākā Swami: Everyone there was bathed by the tears emanating from the Lord Caitanya's eyes as He whirled around dancing. emanating from the Lord Caitanya's eyes as He whirled around dancing.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.127

premamaya avatāra gaurasundara—

ihāre se kahi prema-maya-avatāra
e śakti caitanyacandra vine nāhi āra

Jayapatākā Swami: That’s why Lord Caitanyacandra is described as the incarnation of love of God. He only has the śakti the potency the power no one has.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.128

tṛtīya prahara rātri paryanta prabhura bhāvāveśe yāpana—

ei mate gela rātri tṛtīya prahara
sthira hailena prabhu śrī-gaurasundara

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way nine hours of the night passed, then Lord Śrī Gaurasundara became pacified.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.129

sakala lokera citte ‘yena kṣaṇa-prāya’
sabāra nistāra haila caitanya-kṛpāya

Jayapatākā Swami: All the people there thought that hardly a moment had passed. They were all delivered by the mercy of Lord Caitanya. So Lord Caitanya by His association, and by His transcendental manifestation of ecstasy all the people of Chatrabhoga who witnessed this they were completely spell bound, they didn’t think that the time was passing. That means that the Lord’ s emotions and pastimes are transcendental and people who are participate they also don’t realise the passing of time. By being fully absorbed in Kṛṣṇa consciousness we can be completely transcendental to the time, place, and circumstances.
