Viśvambhara Eating Betel Leaf and Nut and “I am going home”

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 1.8.1

iti śrutvā vacastasya cintayitvā vicārya ca
natvā hariṁ punaḥ prāha śṛṇuṣva susamāhitaḥ

Bengali translation: Dāmodarera praśna śuniyā, murāri cintā o vicāra kariyā, śrīharira caraṇe daṇḍavat praṇatipūrvaka punarāya balilena,—‘sāvadhāne śravaṇa. karuna.

Jayapatākā Swami: In regard to this pastimes of the Lord when the Lord said he will go home, Dāmodara Paṇḍita asked a question to Murāri Gupta das which has opened up many topics. So Murāri Gupta in Caitanya-līlā was Hanumān in Rāma-līlā so he has his unique perspective on these. So he said to Dāmodara “Listen carefully to what I am about to say!”

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 1.8.2

janasya bhagavaddhyānāt kīrtanāt śravaṇādapi
hareḥ praveśo hṛdaye jāyate sumahātmanaḥ

Bengali translation: Bhagavānera dhyāne, kīrtane o śravaṇe mahā-bhāgyavān bhaktajanera hṛdaye hari praveśa karena.

Jayapatākā Swami: When the Lord’s devotees, by meditating on the Lord, by chanting his holy names and by listening to the kīrtana of the Lord, the Lord enters into the heart of His devotees.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 1.8.3

tasyānukāraṁ cakre sa tattejastatparākramam
dadhāti puruṣo nityamātmadehādivismṛtaḥ

Bengali translation: Prabhu ei līlārai anukaraṇa karilena. tāṅhāra teja— tāṅhāra parākrama. ātmadehādi-vismṛta mānava ai parākramake nityai dhāraṇa karena.

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord performed his pastimes for sometime, for he enters into the heart of His devotee and His devotee forgets His material identification and rather sees everything in relation to Kṛṣṇa and the Lord endows Him with certain potencies.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 1.8.4

bhavedevaṁ tataḥ kāle punarvāhyo bhavettataḥ
karoti sahajaṁ ka
rma prahlādasya yathā purā

Bengali translation: Ei bodha haya yuktiyukta kathā. tāra pare ābāra kālakrame tāṅhāra vāhyāveśao haya evaṁ sāhajika karmādio kariyā thākena. yemana purākāle ei prabhu prahlādera sahita.

Jayapatākā Swami: As the time goes on the devotee gradually performs his activities more spontaneously so that his material activities are going on spontaneously just as in the ancient time Prahlāda Mahārāja was having the transcendental potencies of Kṛṣṇa.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 1.8.5

tādātmyo'bhūttoyanidhau punarddehasmṛtistaṭe
evaṁ hi gopasādhvīnāṁ tādātmyaṁ sambhavet kvacit

Bengali translation: Samudra-madhye tādātmya prāpta haiyāchilena, punarāya taṭe āsile dehasmṛti haiyāchila. eirūpei gopīgaṇerao kakhanao bhagavānera sahita tādātmya haite śunā yāya.

Jayapatākā Swami: As one bathes in the ocean waters one feels oneness with the ocean but when one comes to the shore, then one remembers that one is small compared to the ocean. In a similarly, way, the gopīs in their confidential service of Kṛṣṇa felt oneness with Kṛṣṇa, but when they took up their household chores again they felt a duality.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 1.8.6

īśvastasya saṁśikṣāṁ darśayaṁstaccakāra ha
lokasya kṛṣṇabhaktasya bhabedetatsvarūpatā

Bengali translation: Īśvara ei śikṣāi divāra janya sei (phaladānakārī bhakta brāhmaṇera dehe praveśa kariyā) līlā kariyāchena. rahasya ei ye, kṛṣṇa-bhakta lokera īśvara-sārūpya prāpti haya arthāt bhaktadehe bhagavadadhiṣṭhāna haile bhaktadehe āra bhagavad-dehe bhinnabhāva thāke nā.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Kṛṣṇa shows these pastimes to instruct that how the body of His devotees is transcendental, that the devotee is acting according to his svarūpa or spiritual relationship with Kṛṣṇa. In this way there is not a difference between the body of the Lord and the body of the devotee but the devotee is fully engaged in devotional service to the Lord.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 1.8.7

yathātra na vimuhyanti janā ityabhyaśikṣayan
bhaktadeho bhagavato hyātmā caiba na saṁśayaḥ

Bengali translation: Yāhāte loka ei kathāya vimugdha nā haya—ei śikṣāi prabhu dāna karilena. bhaktadehai bhagavānera ātmā—ihāte saṁśaya nāi.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya gave this instruction so as to avoid the misconception of the non-devotee that by His entering into the heart of His devotee and by using the body of the devotee to perform different activities He is showing how His devotee is worshipable and how there is no difference between his transcendental form and the body of His devotee although the devotee is not the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because he is fully engaged in Kṛṣṇa’s service and because Kṛṣṇa can take over his senses transcendentally to perform spiritually difficult tasks. Of this there is no doubt.
