Śrī Gaurāṅga's attachment to scriptural studies; His father's ban of His studies (Part one)

23rd December 2014 New Delhi on Day 30

Jayapatākā Swami: These chapter headings are just for reference and my book should be with different chapter headings, should be short and sweet.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.115

nimāira krīḍā-cāpalyādi-tyāga o anukṣaṇa pāṭhe manoniveśa —
khelā sambariyā prabhu yatna kari’ paḍe
tilārddheka pustaka chāḍiyā nāhi naḍe

Jayapatākā Swami: Nimāi gave up His fabulous sports and He observed Himself in studies and he gave attention to His parents so that they will not suffer from the absence of Viśvarūpa. Without His books He would not go anywhere [3:47]

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.116

viśvambharera amānuṣika smṛti vā medhā śakti—
eka-bāra ye sūtra paḍiyā prabhu yāya
āra-bāra ulaḍhiyā sabāre ṭhekāya

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Ulaṭiyā, (hindī ‘ulṭā’ śabda), phiriyā, pakṣāntare; ṭhekāya,—vipade phele, parājaya kare.

Jayapatākā Swami: Nimāi had amazing memory. He would just read Sanskrit grammar śūtra just one time and immediately remember. Not only remember, He would also defeat the others in arguing with the Sanskrit code. He could also turn the code around from different angles and present the subject matter and again defeat others.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.117

taddarśane sakalera viśvambharake o miśra śacīke praśaṁsā —
dekhiyā apūrva buddhi sabei praśaṁse
sabe bole,—“dhanya pitā-mātā hena vaṁśe”

Jayapatākā Swami: [8:00] All the people who saw the superb intelligence of Nimāi, praised him and they praised his mother and father. How glorious is this family that this child has grown up with.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.118

sakalera miśra-bhāgya-praśaṁsā—

santoṣe kahena sabe jagannātha-sthāne
tumi ta’ kṛtārtha, miśra, e-hena nandane

Jayapatākā Swami: Everyone was appreciating the good fortune of Jagannātha Miśra that you have such a child as your son. You’re certainly blessed to have such a son.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.119

viśvambharera pāṇḍitya-sambandhe sakalera bhaviṣyadvāṇī —

e-mata subuddhi śiśu nāhi tribhuvane
bṛhaspati jiniñā haibe adhyayane

Jayapatākā Swami: In the whole three worlds there is not a boy who has such an intelligence. Even if you were to meet Brihaspati, he would defeat him in arguments. He could defeat Brihaspati in this matter of his studies.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.120

śunibā-mātrai nimāira sarvavidha artha vyākhyāna-sāmarthya—

śunilei sarva artha āpane vākhāne
tā’na phāṅki vākhānite nāre kona jane”

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Phāṅki,—saṁskṛta ‘phakkikā’ śabdera apabhraṁśa; siddhānta o saṅgatira madhye doṣa pradarśanapūrvaka punarvāra saṁśaya o pūrvapakṣa-sthāpana; kuṭa tarka, cāturī.

Jayapatākā Swami: By studying a subject matter one time he would grasp it totally and in the debate he can create such a doubt that over the original subject matter that no one could break it then he would again defeat all his doubts and establish the original.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.121

tacchuvaṇe putra-sneha-vatsalā śacīra harṣa o gauravānu-bhava, kintu miśrera āśaṅkā —
śuniñā putrera guṇa jananī hariṣa
miśra punaḥ citte baḍa haya vimariṣa

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Vimariṣa, —vimarṣa, viṣanna.

Jayapatākā Swami: [17:48] When Śacīmātā heard all the praise of her son, she was very happy. But the more praise that Jagannātha Miśra heard of his son the more morose he became.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.122

viśvambharera bhāvi-sannyāsa-sambandhe śacīra nikaṭa miśrera āśaṅkā jñāpana —
śacī-prati bole jagannātha miśra-vara
“eho putra nā rahibe saṁsāra-bhitara

Jayapatākā Swami: Jagannātha Miśra tells to Śacīmātā this child will not stay within the material family life.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.123

pūrve viśvarūpera anitya-gṛha-tyāgābhinayera dṛṣṭāntollekha—
ei-mata viśvarūpa paḍi’ sarva-śāstra
jānilā,—’saṁsāra satya nahe tila-mātra’

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way Viśvarūpa had studied all the scriptures and He realized that the material family life was not real, even as much as the sesame seed.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.124

sarva-śāstra-tātparyāvat viśvarūpera kṛṣṇa-sevā-hīna gṛha-vrata-dharmake duḥsaṅgane varjana-pūrvaka kṛṣṇāmveṣaṇārtha pravrajyā-līlā—
sarva-śāstra-marma jāni’ viśvarūpa dhīra
anitya saṁsāra haite hailā bāhira

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa understood all the subject matters of the scriptures. Therefore, when He realized that the material family life is illusion and therefore, he went outside and took sannyāsa.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.125

viśvarūpera anusaraṇe viśvambharerao sarva-śāstra-tātparya jñāna-lābhānantara kṛṣṇāmveṣaṇe pravrajyā-sambhāvanā —
eho yadi sarva-śāstre haibe jñānavān
chāḍiyā saṁsāra-sukha karibe payāna

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Payāna,—prayāṇa-śabdera apabhraṁśa, prasthāna, gamana, yātrā.

Jayapatākā Swami: So this way Viśvambhara follows the example of Viśvarūpa and studies all the scriptures, He will renounce the happiness of the family and go out.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.126

sarvaśeṣa putradvayera madhye viśvarūpera sannyāsa-phale taddarśanāśā tyāga, punarāya viśvambharera sannyāse ubhayera prāṇatyāgera niścayatā —
ei putra—sabe dui-janera jīvana
ihāre nā dekhile dui-janera maraṇa

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Duijanera, —pitāmātāra.

Jayapatākā Swami: This Viśvambhara is our life and soul. If we cannot see him, we would certainly die.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.127

viśvambharera bhāvi-sannyāsāśaṅkāya bhīta miśra-kartṛka putrera adhyayana tyāga-pūrvaka gṛhe avasthiti kāmanā—
ataeva ihāra paḍiyā kārya nāi
murkha hañā ghare mora rahuka nimāñi”

Jayapatākā Swami: In other words, there is no work for this child. Let him stay home. Even if he is a fool let him stay at home. In other words, there is no studying to be done by Nimāi. Let him stay at home even if people call him a fool.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.128

paṇḍita-putrera mātṛtve gauravānubhava-kāriṇī śacī-kartṛka nimāira adhyayana tyāgera bhāvi kuphala-varṇana—
śacī bole,—“murkha haile jīveka kemane?
murkhere ta’ kanyāo nā dibe kona jane”

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Jīveka,—jīvita thākibe—rāḍha deśe vyavahṛta.

Jayapatākā Swami: Śacīdevī said to her husband if he is a fool, how he will he survive and who will give their daughter in marriage to a fool.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.129

śacīke miśrera tiraskāra; miśrera ekānta śaraṇāgati vā kṛṣṇa-para-tantratā o nirbharatā—
miśra bole, “tumi ta’ abodha vipra-sutā!
harta kartā bhartā kṛṣṇa—sabāra rakṣitā

Jayapatākā Swami: Jagannātha Miśra scolded his wife. You are the ignorant daughter of a brāhmaṇa. You don’t know that Kṛṣṇa is the doer, controller, maintainer and protector of all living entities.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.130

jagannātha kṛṣṇai jagat-poṣāka, jaḍavidyādi jīva-pauruṣa nahe—
jagat poṣaṇa kare jagatera nātha
‘pāṇḍitye poṣaye,—kebā kahilā tomāta?

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Poṣaye,—poṣaṇa kare.

Jayapatākā Swami: The universe is run by the Lord of the universe, Lord Jagannātha. Who has told you that by being a paṇḍita that you can be protected.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.131

sarvaphaladātā kṛṣṇecchārūpa adṛṣṭai vivāhādira nirbandhakāraka—
kibā murkha, ki paṇḍita, yāhāra yekhāne
kanyā likhiyāche kṛṣṇa, se haibe āpane

Jayapatākā Swami: A great scholar or an illiterate person who says that they will get a good wife. Wherever Kṛṣṇa has written for each they will get that girl. Kṛṣṇa is the bestower of the results of the karma.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.132

sarva-śaktimāna kṛṣṇai viprera poṣaka o pālaka—

kula-vidyā-ādi upalakṣaṇa sakala
sabāre poṣaye kṛṣṇa, kṛṣṇa-sarva-bala

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Upalakṣaṇa,—yāhā āśraya kariyā vastuvṛtti paricita haya, kintu prakṛta-prastābe yāhā vastura vṛtti nahe; gauṇa viśeṣaṇa.

Jayapatākā Swami: Family education etc., are simply the external indications. The actual cause is Lord Kṛṣṇa. Everyone is protected by Kṛṣṇa and sustained by Kṛṣṇa and He is the strength of everyone.
