Viśvambhara Eating Betel Leaf and Nut and “I am going home”

Jayapatākā Swami: We can mention that (in the introduction) …We are combining the different books and introducing in some places Murāri Gupta and some places Dāmodara Paṇḍita. It will be confusing. So, we are just saying the līlās and some purports and then we mention that this book is actually a discussion between Murāri Gupta and Dāmodara Paṇḍita and those who like to read that book, they are [UNCLEAR]. We are particularly combining different books, not to make the combination complicated.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.622

sei kāle eka dvija āsi ācamvita
āni dila guyā-pāna ati śuddhacita

Jayapatākā Swami: So, at that time, suddenly a brahmana appeared carrying a plate with betel nut, pan and fruits and he offered that with pure consciousness.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.623

hāsiyā takhane prabhu guvāka khāila
kṣaṇeka-antare punaḥ māyere ḍākila

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Viśvambhara took some betel nuts from that plate. For a bite He was silent from inside then He called for His mother. Smilingly he ate some of the contents of the plate He had some betel, for a moment He was thinking to Himself then He called for His mother.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.624

māyera kahila prabhu-āmi yāi geha
yatane pāliha tumi -nijasuta eha

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya said “I’m going home. This body will lie senseless for some time and you should take care of it.”

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.625

ihā bali kṣaṇārddha rniśceṣṭa hañā rahi
daṇḍa-paraṇāma kare loṭāiyā mahī

Jayapatākā Swami: Then the Lord offered His obeisances flat on the earth rolling around for a moment and then being unconscious.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.626

niḥśabde rahilā punaḥ-śacī tarāsita
gaṅgājala mukhe dei hṛdaya tvarita

Jayapatākā Swami: Then Śacīmātā got Ganges water and sprinkled it on the mouth of her son quickly and feeling afraid she put her hand on the chest of Viśvambhara.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.627

kṣaṇeke takhana prabhu hailā samvita
sahaja rūpera teje ghara ālokita

Jayapatākā Swami: After a moment Lord Viśvambhara became conscious again and his natural effulgence lit up the room.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.628

māyere kahila prabhu- āmi yāi geha
e kathā vicāra karibāre āche keha

Jayapatākā Swami: Then the Lord Viśvambhara told to His mother Śacī that “I’m going home” Who can understand the inner meaning of these words.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.629

śrī-murāri guptabejhā prabhura antarīṇa
sarva tattvaveoā sei bhakata-pravīṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Some of the very long standing well established realized devotees who spent time discussing what these four words could mean “I am going home”.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.630 -33

dāmodara paṇḍita puchila tāra sthāne
e kathāra tattva more kaha mahājane

kibā māyā kaila prabhu kibā kona śakti
ihāra vicāra more kari deha yukti

murāri kahaye-śuna śuna mahāśaya
āmi ki sakala jāni kṛṣṇera āśaya

ye kichu kahiye nija buddhi-anumāne
yuktisiddha haya yadi rākhiha parāṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: What power do I have to discuss the Lord’s transcendental pastimes and his unlimited spiritual potency; I will try to say something to my limited knowledge if you it makes sense accept it. If you don’t, it’s all I can do.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.634

śravaṇa, darśana, dhyāna āra saṅkīrtane
hṛdaye praveśe prabhu nija bhaktajane

Jayapatākā Swami: By hearing observing, meditating and saṅkīrtana the Lord enters the heart of his own devotee to share the transcendental experience.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.635

nija deha-deha nahe—nirguṇa ākāra
guṇe se guṇera bhoga ācāra vicāra

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord’s body is not a body: it’s his own form which is not made of material elements. He is sac-cid-ānanda to the material world.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.636

eteke bhakatadeha deha kari māne
svacchanda-vihāra tahi saba ācaraṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: Through the body of the His pure devotee of the Lord, He freely performs His transcendental pastimes.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.637

nijapūjā-adhika bhakatapūjā māne
pūjāra saṁgraha tāthe jāne mane mane

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord accepts the worship of His devotee as superior to His own worship. Because He accepts the worship of His devotees more than His own devotees and that He is accepting the worship through His devotees and considering that to be His worship.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.638

āpane ṭhākura sei tadadhīna jana
loka-ācaraṇe māyā bali dui jana

Jayapatākā Swami: Without understanding the transcendental position of the Lord, the conditioned souls misunderstand the transcendental activities of the Lord. Because the Lord is acting as subservient to His devotees, because that is His transcendental pleasure, but some of the conditioned souls think that this is the manifestation of material maya or illusion and don’t consider Kṛṣṇa in His topmost actual position.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.639

āpanā adhika kene mānaye bhakta
e kathā bujhite nāre sakala jagata

Jayapatākā Swami: That the Lord sees His devotees as greater to Himself, some of the conditioned souls are not able to understand this and therefore they think that the Lord is a conditioned soul.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.640

rasamaya-vigraha lāvaṇyamaya deha
sakala sampad tanu niramila seha

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord’s form is filled with transcendental emotions and most beautiful to see. His transcendental form is the treasure of all His devotees and it is transcendentally pure.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.641

vilāsa-vinoda-līlā bine nāhi āra
nirguṇa baliyā gāli dei kon chāra

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord has no other activity than enjoying transcendental pastimes. Who is the foolish person who accuses the Lord of being impersonal and having no qualities.

Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi 3.642

māyāra kāraṇe āpe nā haya bekata
bhaktadehe vinoda karaye avirata

Jayapatākā Swami: Due to the influence of His divine illusory energy the Lord remains improperly described to the conditioned souls while he is revealed to His devotees. Thus he is enjoying the transcendental pastimes in the body of His devotees.
