The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on January 27, 1992 – in Bangalore, India. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 4.21.8-9.

It. Maitreya speak about the various activities of King Pritu, the original king who was fully qualified, glorified and widely praised all over the world. Didura, the great devotee, very submissively worshipped by prayer Rishi and asked him the following. Just now you read that words. That has put the number for 319. My dear Brāhmaṇa Maitreya, it is very enlightening to understand that King Pritu was enthroned by the great sages and Ramas. All the demigods presented him with innumerable gifts and he also expanded his influence above personally receiving strength from Lord Vishnu. Thus he greatly developed the earth Vidura seh Translation repetition Vidura said My dear Brahman, it is very enlightening. It is very enlightening to understand that King Pluto to understand what King Pluto was enthroned by the great sages and Brahmanas was enthroned by the great sages. And.

He also expanded his influence upon personally receiving strength. Because Bhaitu Mahārāja was an empowered incarnation of Lord Vishnu and was naturally a great Vaishnava devotee of the Lord. All the demigods were pleased with him and presented different gifts to help him in exercising his royal power. The great sages and saintly persons have also joined in his coronation. Thus, blessed by them, he ruled over the earth and exploited its resources for the greatest satisfaction of the people in general. This has already been explained in the previous chapters regarding the activities of Being Pitu as we attempt the next verse. Every executive head of state should follow in the footsteps of Maharaj Pitu in ruling over his kingdom, regardless of whether the chief executive is the king or president or whether the government is monarchical or democratic.

This process is so perfect that if it is followed, everyone will become happy and thus it will be very easy for all to execute devotional service to the supreme personality of God. Thus the Swami translation referred Forward to text 88 and 9 of chapter 21. Character form the Shiva advantage of the without instructions by Maharaj preachers. So the Dura is appreciating the aspects and glories and activities of ritual Mahārāja because what he has done is establish a standard how Kṛṣṇa conscious ruler or government should progressively serve the citizens.

And.

Rule over them in such a way that they will be able to correct their lives to the ultimate destination. So Bridga Maharaj, as we can understand here, this example is not simply for the monarchs, but also for democratic government to follow. These principles are universal. The principles of government, the Śiva and Bhāgavatam is not simply book which is meant for the Hindus. It’s a book meant for the whole society, for the whole humankind, how to uplift them. It gives instructions how to have a proper government, so how to have a proper family life, how to have a proper student life, how to have a proper retired life and how to live a proper renounced life. It gives various kinds of instructions, giving the essence of instruction.

Most important of all, Śrī Mahavata is telling us how we can achieve this unique personality of Gandha which is the real purpose of life. If anybody wants to be successful in their endeavor, simply reading these instructions of Maharaj Btu are especially recommended. The pastimes of Maharaj Bhitu in general are very auspicious. You see, Madreya Rishi had given a synopsis of Maharashtrita’s life ended with him flight back to Gaga. But when Madura is asking the next nurse as he wants to hear more details about Viju Maharaj. In other words, the pastimes of Vija Maharaj were so enlightening to Madura he thought for the welfare of the world it would be good to hear even more. So. My treat is where to tell off into Maharaj met the fourth Dumaras and God’s spiritual instruction and how Bidu Maharaj went back to home, back to Gandhi.

Later on in the 23rd chapter. It mentions that the glories of hearing the pastimes of Reza Maharaj like a little Prithu Maharaj Mahatya for listening to his narrations as if the king was desirous of attaining victory and ruling power, chants the narration of Bhitu Maharaj three times before going forth on his chariot, all subordinate kings will automatically render all kinds of taxes unto him as they rendered them after King Maharashtritu simply upon his order. When the politicians want to run for election, he could tell them to read the aspects of Mr. Maharaj three times. Boy, then they can get a good vote. Those who hear the narration three times will become very reputable. It appears not recognizing society, you will become a great scholar and he is a literate.

In other words, during generations of Ritu Maharaj is so auspicious that it drives away all bad karma or luck. By hearing the duration of Pritu Maharaj, one can become great, increase his duration of life, gain promotion to the heavenly planets, counteract the contaminations of this age of Kali. In addition, one can promote the causes of religion, economic development, sense gratification, liberation. Therefore, from all sides it is advisable For a materialistic person who is interested in such things to reappear the durations of life and character from the Maharaj. Of course, then it explains that for a pure devotee who has exit during the different processes of devotional service is more important for us may be situated in the transcendental position, being completely absorbed in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

But even he, while discharging devotional service must here read and induce others to hear about the character and life of Ritu Maharaj. In other words, the pure devotee has nothing to gain. He’s already achieved Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Still, we should hear a read and induce others to hear a read about the character of Kritu Maharaj. So then he concluded that my dear Bendur, I have as far as possible spoken about the narrations. Excuse me, spoken the narrations about written Maharaj which enrich one’s emotional attitude. Whoever takes advantage of these benefits also goes back home, back to Godhead like Maharaj Gītā. The Reva, with great reverence and admiration regularly reads chants and describes the history of Maharaj. Bhitu’s activities most certainly increase unflinching faith and attraction for the lotus beaver of the Lord.

The Lord’s mother’s feet are the boat by which one can cross the ocean of missions. You have a couple more chapters to go about Peter Maharaj. Because the Dura is now requesting Maitreya to go deeper into Mahira, into Maharaj’s pastimes. So by concentrating on Bhitu Mahārāja’s activities and qualities, it’s good for everyone. If you’re a materialist, you get materialistic benefits. If you are a devotee, increase your devotion, increase your faith, go back to Godhead for everyone. There’s some blessings of Bhuta Maharaj’s mysteries are very auspicious. Those who want to get rid of bad luck, just encourage them to mention here. People come to us all the time with some material problems or here’s a good solution and we can give to them you having bad luck. All right, leave this three times you can tell so much.

So apart from the devotees, learn the third way becoming Kṛṣṇa conscious so they may see all these material benefits and think, well, what does this have to do with me? The end also is explained that this is also good for devotees. Good for devotees to encourage others to chant. It increases one’s devotion also especially the next past Jaisal are very elevated Instructions of the 4th Kumaras to Pritu Maharaj. And then Prithu Maharaj is going back to Gaga. So these are very important Instructions Prithu Maharaj is actually a Jīva. He’s a living entity. But he is empowered by the Lord. The Lord sometimes empowers the individual soul with some of his divine potency. So when he gives his full potency to someone in a particular area, then it’s called Shakta Resh. If it’s less powerful, then it’s just called of the Mooty.

Even less powerful than there’s another name. So Shankara our time means that actually little Maharaj was given fully the potency of Kṛṣṇa to rule. Therefore, although he’s a Vaishnava, he’s a pure devotee. At the same time he’s manifesting Kṛṣṇa’s potency of bullying. So so there’s a supernatural potency to rule. So that Kṛṣṇa water tuned in to establish what was the standard of being a powerful honor. The ruler or governmental head smiling not only is also an individual living entity, but he has been given the full power of devotion. So he manifests what is the ideal standard of devotion for the Supreme Lord. Of course, Narana Muni is came down to associate with Lord Chaitanya Mahabhu in his pastimes as Śrīvastava of the Panchatatwa.

Actually, not only was also encouraging Kṛṣṇa to come down into the material world prior to the Kali Yuga, he had encouraged Kṛṣṇa to deliver the fallen souls of the Kali Yuga. And when he went all the way to the spiritual realm and requested Lord Chaitanya to come that time Lord Chaitanya agreed to come and told all the Gopīs and Ranis to also accompany him. Then he told Nārada Muni to go and invite Balaram to come as Nityvatta. So where she was? Excuse me. Ramuni went to invite Mahara. May he say that Kṛṣṇa Chaitanya was also coming. So then he could leave the cup. But then he told God, you also come. You’re not going to get left out of this pastime. You got everybody else to come, you have to come too. So the Adam Huli came as Shiva Snakur.

Balaram came as a Lord Ikyanatha. So this way that’s kind of unfolded. Actually. Śrīvas Thakur was also at the most holiday pastimes one of the most central figures. Because every day in his house the Nagar is a Moses was going on Sushivas was already discovered responsible householder. At the same time he was the most responsible devotee. So nothing would conflict with his devotion for Kṛṣṇa. That was his number one priority art. For that he did everything perfectly in his Mahastra affairs in his other affairs, in the medical affairs. But whatever Chaitanya Maharaj’s interest was at question, there was no question that would be the number one concern of Śrīla’s conflict. And everything else would be relegated to the second position. Dislike. People are told to put countries before self. Mashiva’s daughter showed to put God before everything, to put Lord Caitanya before everything else.

So therefore we worship the Panchata Śrīvas. He’s also Shakta Vish Avutara Prahamuri. So this way there are many empowered souls. In fact, were at a program one time with Śrīla Prabhupāda and one Ramana stood out. What Hindi and Ramana, one very big society. And he started to say that actually Prabhupāda must be a Shankar Mish Allotar because he has shown the power of Chaitanya Mahabhabu to deliver the fallen souls. And that man Bhagavad just smiled and didn’t say anything, didn’t object. Actually Prabhupāda is really in power. Chaitanya Charaka Reada states that. Possessor Dharma is the Samirta. And unless one is empowered by Kṛṣṇa, nobody can spread the Samirta movement. So he just. We shouldn’t ever think that we’re ever successful in spreading Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. That is due to our own efforts.

But rather even with our efforts without the mercy of Kṛṣṇa couldn’t be possible. So the desire of the devotee empowered by the mercy of the Lord is what makes the Sadhgirta Buddha spread. Therefore we always need to very humbly get the mercy of the Lord in order to be able to represent him, in order to be an id, an instrument in his hands. Especially if we get the mercy of Prabhupāda that we can spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Because Śrīla Prabhupāda has been fully empowered by Chaitanya Mahāprabhu. That is unfortunate that some of the contemporaries that should have God didn’t want to accept that and someone give lip service. Then his godmothers said that he was empowered. But then if they really understood that he was in power, then why didn’t they want to his example? I follow his guidance.

He requested all the maishawas to work cooperatively together. He requested all of his godmothers to work together. Unfortunately they didn’t make it up. So he said in the future His God will be able to unite the different Vaishnavas. Sadhguru Bhāgavatam also mentions that many Vaishnavas in South India walk the sacred river site. Somehow we need to bring together all the Vaishnavas so that this Kṛṣṇa conscious movement can continue to spread Lord Chaitanya’s message to everyone. And engaging all the Maisha and Lord Chaitanya. So. Specific instructions what to be done, what not to be done with his followers and Sikhs Goswamis. And a little deviation from that puts us in a very dangerous predicament, very dangerous position.

So therefore it’s very important to Shastra holding guidance of the previous Acharyas and follow them as we are careless of following them, then we are put in adultery. So therefore there are many lessons by Śrīla monkey Siddharth. This earth shall be taught for simply about devotees. Very sincere and very careful. Apparently he was encountering a lot of situations where devotees were not following strictly the principles of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Putting on external show. He had the stories of Prabhupāda used to tell us about Shalikaram via Vedant Mālā that don’t use the Shaligram Sheila to break your peanut shells. It sounds like a pretty amazing structure. How would anybody in South India? We couldn’t imagine some priest taking his shaling gram sila to make peanuts. But Rla Bhakti Siddhartha Ta, there was a hired priest in a temple.

And every day some devotee was bringing about half a kilo of peanuts in the shell to the deity. That Punjari would close the door. And he didn’t have anything else, you know, he thought, well, it’s a stone to break peanuts. So he took the stone. Who’s cracking the peanuts? Every bit chills off our back. How horrible. What a great offense. But the point was that this Pujari had no faith in God, had no faith in the Shastra. He was just doing it as a job. He was just doing it as an occupation. And for him the statues were. The deities were statues. The the shaling ground which is the stone. So if we use Kṛṣṇa’s things for material purposes, this is a very offensive thing. The Śrīla Bhakti Śrīnathakur said just like he was using the shaling ground for some material purpose.

If we use Ka’s property for our own sense gratification. There is also like Shaligram Siddha. The gate Madam Baba is like taking a Shaligram Shiva and using it to break the peanut. Kṛṣṇa is properly should be used only for Kṛṣṇa. We don’t want to use anything that Kṛṣṇa has given us for any kind of material purpose. What we do then after that we have to suffer various Ways just like that. Pujari was suffering a hellish mentality. Sometimes you may fall into that via of taking that. Well, I have done so much work for Kṛṣṇa, so what am I getting out of the materialist? Let me take some things of Kṛṣṇa and use it for my own sense gratification. We are not dismissed that we’re serving Kṛṣṇa expecting some kind of material remuneration. Remuneration.

We are serving Kṛṣṇa as the offering, selfless offering without any expectation of any material return. If Kṛṣṇa is kind of us, our only request is to get his pure devotion and never be separated from his lotus feet, to be protected from committing offenses to his lotus feet and his Vaishnavas. His holy gate. Devotee doesn’t want. The devotee doesn’t want any material expectation. So Mishra’s name shouldn’t be used for any material purpose. That event Shivatov informed that people were taking his car. He had a very near one of the few cars which was used for preaching. They were taking it over to the doctors to get the medicine. So he made an order that in the future, Anisha Gastri needs to go to the doctors and go somewhere just, you know, you should walk.

Anything to do with your sense gratification, you can walk, but if you want to use the vehicle for preaching, then you can ride. It’s all right. Don’t use Kṛṣṇa’s property for your own material or purpose. Even as Sannyāsī wasn’t going to unnecessarily use the material to say that were there just because they were there so their mind be used. Of course, that car was a very valuable facility. The cost of fortune, it was very rare. So just to use it for ordinary activities was not considered very appropriate. But nowadays cars are very common commodities. But the principle is there. You may have to adjust according to the changing facilities. But in principle we shouldn’t use Kṛṣṇa as things unnecessarily just for our own purposes, material purposes. We should think how we can actually work on behalf of Kṛṣṇa we have of this interest.

So he actually that very simple example, he gave many different applications. How people are using Kṛṣṇa for their own ulterior motive. Myavadis, they’re also using Kṛṣṇa for their own purpose. They want to achieve immigration. They want to become one with Kṛṣṇa. So they’re also trying to use Kṛṣṇa for their own Sanskritification. They show some devotion to Kṛṣṇa, but in the end they want to become one with Kṛṣṇa. So all these kind of misuse of mishla mercy need to be very carefully avoided. Bridget Maharaj was someone who showed how to use everything properly. He used everything he had in the service of the Lord. He did everything in the proper way. So we have to also discuss the other Gospel silver. So if we use those facilities to serve him, then you will get Bhava Kṛṣṇa. We will get devotion for Kṛṣṇa.

Everything will be all His Kṛṣṇa. If we use the facilities that he gives us in a way which is not really helpful for his service, then we lose the shelter of Kṛṣṇa to different degrees. And that makes us more accessible for Māyā to attack us. So we need to be very careful. The grandpa said the Samkirta devotees need to not take any money from Samkirta without authorization because this will pollute the mind. They should only take what they’re authorized to take for their expenses or otherwise turn everything into the temple and then only get from the treasury according to what the requisitions are. All these things are guidelines to keep our mind pure. Otherwise we can easily fall into taking KA’s things to be our things.

Then we can start also bringing the pitas with the Shali gramma in an indirect way for our own material purpose. Are there any questions?

Dislike. We read about Prithv Mahārāja Shakti Aveshava and he is a great devotee. We always look upon great devotees as infallible. And sometimes we see as it is described in the pastime in the Bhāgavatam like he was attacking Indra and Brahma had to interfere.

It.

(Side B of the Cassette)

It.

He was attacking Yakshas and Manu had to interfere. Sometimes we see in these past times their behavior which was not later on reconciled to be not the best or the correct one. So how do we understand? Sometimes.

This material world is a very complex and powerful energy of the Lord. As Kṛṣṇa mentions in the Bhagavad, This material energy is very difficult to overcome. Only by bringing a shelter of the Lord is impossible.

So.

Even sometimes great devotees appear to be slightly misdirected by the material energy, seem to be carried away. But because they are surrendering to the Lord directly or through his representative, the Guru constant corrects the devotees various ways. Somehow he directs devotee. So this is our mercy of the Lord. The Lord itself never becomes bewildered by the material energy. But even if empowered devotees, the true devotees, they may somehow temporarily become affected, apparently from this very simple pistol. And immediately they are corrected. So that also shows how the Lord protects his devotee. The intention of the devotee may be that do something for the service of the Lord. But then they get carried away. That’s what usually happens. Just like wanted to do a Yajna’s budapesta, then he got carried away and it became an over endeavor which was no longer very easy to Kṛṣṇa.

So there the Guru came, Brahman came and directed him as that important to 99 sacrifices and even death. Guru Na or dislike Jubba Maharaj as the king. He has to protect himself from aggressors. He was attacked, his brother was killed. But then he got little carried away in the battle and started to massacre all of the Yakshas. So then he was also corrected that it wasn’t necessary1 but Yaksha did. The mistakes of it being solved. These things are there when we get into devotional service. We may also get carried away. We may get. We may expect good something and tension was a resolutely good. But then in the end it becomes something which is not so useful. I mean, what does it mean?

We experienced that on a daily basis or on a weekly basis, where once in a lifetime it was experienced by these great Vaishnavas and they were really corrected. So we had to be humble. This is just an example, a lesson for us how careful we have to be of the vigil energy. Sometimes you hear devotees say, well, I am an older devotee, why does everybody get out my case? I know what’s right and wrong and there’s no danger that I would be misdirected or anything. And then, you know, these are my famous last words before you Know, they take. They really go on the deep end because Māyā is so strong that it could really affect anybody. The difference is that if we are already careful to do things for Kṛṣṇa protects us.

Because their intentions were good, they were protected, they were very great devotees. So whether as it were taken as an example, how we had to be so careful in dealing with this material energy, what they have is like that lesson we told yesterday morning about the sannyāsī at the mouth. The one thing that ended next and pretty soon, you know, he completely left his responsibilities. So in the name of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, we can completely get off the track if we don’t have the reference points properly fixed with everything in the well, this is for Kṛṣṇa. This is for. This is needed. That’s needed, you know. Thank you. One thing going on the Buddhist sun, you’re so far off that it tips your scale.

So we have to be very careful not to lose the reference points, lose the instructions of the guru intelligence given from Sadhu Shastra Stayhappi grant. So therefore there’s many points like that. Devakī Devī, she also was fearful of Kṛṣṇa being attacked by Kaṁsa. Although she perceived that Kṛṣṇa was Nārāyaṇa, still she was feeling fear that O Kaṁsa will come and attack my son. So said this kind of motherly affection was actually a special quality of Vatsali Arasthav. But it was also an example that the devotee should always be afraid of Māyā. We should be afraid that Māyā will come and affect our devotion. Māyā could take Kṛṣṇa away from us. Actually one time a devotee told me that he just kind of carelessly when Prabhupāda was standing before the deities, after Prabhupāda was finished praying, he just asked Prabhupāda, what were you praying?

Which was really not getting light of his to ask. Prabhupāda was kind of surprised to hear somebody answer, what were you praying to the Lord if it was his business? But then he saw that it was a very innocent question. So then Prabhupāda smiled and looked at him and said that I simply pray to the Lord. So something to the effect, I am paraphrasing, I am hearing it secondhand. Something to the effect that Kṛṣṇa will not allow me to fall away devotional service. That he will keep me in his devotional service without any interruption. The devotee was very shocked that here Prabhupāda never considered that Prabhupāda would never be inconceivable that he would be misled in devotional service. But he’s saying that he was praying to Kṛṣṇa every day. So please don’t allow him to be missing led from his devotional services.

So whether you take it as a a lesson for us, how careful we had to be, how we had to be praying to Prabhupāda, to Guru and Kṛṣṇa, to not allow us to be misdirected by their material, by the Lord’s material energy to be kept in the service of the lotus people me. It.
