The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on January 14, 1992 – in Colombo, Śrī Lanka. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.9.38.
My. India, malaysia, australia. Shaming. That. Canto 7, chapter 8, text 38, Chapter nine is good. In this way, my Lord, you appear in various incarnations as a human being, animal, a great saint, a demigod, a fish or a tortoise, thus maintaining the entire creation in different planetary systems and killing the demonic principles according to the age. O my Lord, you protect the principles of religion in the age of Kali. However, you do not assert yourself as the supreme personality of Godhead and therefore you are known as Three Yuga or the Lord who appears in three Yugas. Bawana, You want to just read the purport. Or should I read in English? Would it take more time? Everyone here knows time. Yeah, everybody knows. How many here know English? Those who know English could raise their hand just for my knowledge. Kapadu. And ātmā kaliman.
In the Yuan. Vedas. Ave yara. Sumed. Thus ends the translation and prayer poem of the shrimad bhgavatam. Canto 7, chapter 9, text 38 in the matter of Prahlad pacifies the Lord with prayers spoken in this 14th day of January 1992 in the 505th year of our Lord. Caitanya Mahāprabhu Colombo, Śrī Lanka. So. This verse is spoken by Prahlad to pacify Lord Narasiṁha Dev after Nirshinga to pacify Lord Narcinghe day. And Nishingadev had already protected Prahlad from Iranian. So in this Prahlad was touched by the corn shell of Narasinghadev and now he is giving beautiful prayers. The glorifying the Lord is coming in various incarnations as human being, animal, great saint, demigod, fish. The Lord’s incarnation as a human being was Lord Ravna Chakra. Who came as a perfect king, as animal came as a boar incarnation. He’s a great saint.
There are many like Naradaraya Rishi Rishabh. Nārada Muni is also a great saint. He’s a demigod. The Lord came as. As a fish, he came as Matya avatar, as a tortoise, he came as Kurma avatar. So he’s maintaining the entire creation of different planetary systems and killing the demoniac principles. So Bhagavad Gītā Kṛṣṇa explains that he comes to this world to protect his devotees and to annihilate the irreligious principles. So every Yuga he is coming in order to establish and maintain and protect the particular Yuga Dharma or religious principle of the age. The Lord is known as three Yugas because although he appears in all the Yugas, only in three Yugas does he declare himself to be Godpara Yuga. He asserted himself to be the Incar to be Kṛṣṇa or to be Bhagavad.
But in Kali Yuga he comes as a Channa avatar or a covered disguised incarnation where he does not declare that he is God. First he came as Lord Buddha. Buddha never claimed he was God, But actually he was incarnation of the Lord. With a specific purpose teaching the people non violence. Then Kṛṣṇa himself came with his full potency. As his own devotee. He came as Lord Caitanya Mah Prabrah, similar Lord Caitanya. Since he was coming as a devotee, he never told anyone. He never accepted publicly that he was Kṛṣṇa. Here how do we say that he is Kṛṣṇa? Because all the Vedas are giving references predicting that Kṛṣṇa would come in this way. Just like the verse mentioned here from the 11th Canto. Pangastra Parshadam.
In Kali Yuga, intelligent men worship the supreme personality of God in the form of R Caitanya Mah Prabhu who is always accompanied by his associates such as Nithyananda, Advaita, Gaddadhara and Shivas. Means sacrifice. So the process of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa together is the sacrifice for this age. It says that Kṛṣṇa that this incarnation will be glorifying Kṛṣṇa but will be of a non blackish color. Therefore Lord Chaitanya is golden in color. So this is a very mysterious incarnation. That the Lord has come down as his own devotee. Why did Kṛṣṇa decide to do that? What is the reason? Of course there are many reasons. But also there’s some historical background. I can give you. That. In the Dwarpa Yuga, Kṛṣṇa had already promised his devotees he would come back. In dwarfara. You guys.
Just before Kṛṣṇa was about to leave the world, Nārada Muni was traveling over the world. And he was seeing all the people. But he saw the people were becoming more materialistic. They were not offering all their activities unto Kṛṣṇa so regularly. They were starting to become more attached to materialistic enjoyment. And they’re starting to be a tendency to disagree with one another. So he became very concerned because these were the beginning symptoms of the age of quarrel or Kali Yuga. What is going to happen when Kṛṣṇa leaves the planet? When the age of kara kali yuga begins, Everything is going to become very horrible. People are going to be quarreling with one another and becoming absorbed in gross sense gratifications. So Naramuni became very upset. How to deliver these people in the age of Kali?
I won’t be Able to do it, I need Kṛṣṇa’s help. I must go and see Kṛṣṇa and Dwarka and ask him. What is the hope for the people in the age of Kali Kamala? How will they get his love? How will they have his devotion? Sundarara Muni flew to Dwarka. Meanwhile Kṛṣṇa was in the house of Satyabana. And he gave our information to Rukmiṇī, his first queen that he would be visiting her house. Kṛṣṇa is coming. Kṛṣṇa is coming. Rukmiṇī told all of them people in the palace, Quickly, let’s clean everything again. Make everything ready to receive our beloved Kṛṣṇa. So they began. Even she was personally also cleaning the palace again. Even though it was already clean. She wanted to make everything perfect for Kṛṣṇa. She decorated the children. She had sugar cane put on the door. Just like at Pongal.
This is a very auspicious symptom. With bananas and full Kandi, full punches hanging. Also with full water pots with Brahmanas to chant mantras. Brahmanas to chant mantras. All to receive Lord Kṛṣṇa. She’s making all the preparations. Then she had a Shinai bend. To receive Kṛṣṇa when he came. So Kṛṣṇa coming to her palace was a festival. So when Kṛṣṇa came, there was the band playing music. There was a prominence offering Vedic mantras and hymns. Then she sent the children to go to put garlands over Kṛṣṇa’s neck. Kṛṣṇa was received with so much love and devotion and affection. He embraced our children. Smiling at everyone. With his lotus face. So smiling just to charm the hearts of all present. Then Rukmiṇī took Kṛṣṇa into the private quarters, Sat Kṛṣṇa down on his back special seat.
And then Rukmiṇī bade the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa to receive him. So while bathing the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, she just grabbed Kṛṣṇa’s two lotus feet. Which are lotus red on the soles. Then she held them tightly to her chest. And she was just holding them tightly, looking at the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, at lotus face of Kṛṣṇa. All of a sudden tears started pouring down her eyes. Kṛṣṇa was startled. Why is my queen Rukmiṇī crying when I have just arrived? So why you are crying right now? It.
(Side B of the Cassette)
I have just come here. You should be happy. Why you are crying? What is this mystery? Has someone been fighting with you in the house? Some children have been disobedient? Or has any of your servants been arguing with you? Why are you crying, my queen? Rukmiṇī. But Kṛṣṇa. Rukmiṇī was holding the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa to her chest. And looking at Kṛṣṇa’s lotus face. And the tears are just pouring down. And then Rukmiṇī spoke to her Lord. Her beloved Lord. My dear Lord Kṛṣṇa. You are the Lord of the three worlds. You know everything. Past, present and future. You know everything that’s going on everywhere. You know what Lord Brahma is doing in Brahmaloka. What Shiva, Morgan and Ganapati are doing in Koilas. You know everything. Is this the only thing you don’t know? Is this the only thing that you do not know?
You don’t know what I am feeling for you at this moment. I know that Rādhārāṇī, the Queen of Vrindavan. She knows what I am feeling now. Kṛṣṇa was startled. Kṛṣṇa. Asya Bhatt, what are you saying? He never replied. No one had ever told him before. There was something he didn’t know. What do you mean, Rupini? That I don’t know. Please explain yourselves. That you have come down into my home. Now I have your two beautiful lotus feet. Now these lotus feet are here in my house. But one day they will leave. And again this house will become devoid of your lotus feet. And everything will be empty. Now I have your lotus feet. But just like you left Vrindavan and Rādhārāṇī. Everybody Rādhārāṇī knows what I am feeling now. One day you may also leave me.
And your Lord and speed will go to some other place. You promised me you will never leave. Your lordless feet will never leave my palace. And then I won’t have to cry. Then she started crying more in the. No. No. Urbini, come here. Kṛṣṇa lifted her up, put on his lap by his side. Tried to rub away the tears from her eyes. Don’t cry, my beloved. Don’t cry. Why do you say I will leave you? I am always with you. Now. You don’t understand, Kṛṣṇa. You don’t understand what we feel things. Because. Then Kṛṣṇa was comforting her. Meanwhile Nārada Muni came into the window, flying in. Narana Muni, our Guru has come. Immediately Kṛṣṇa and Rukmiṇī jumped up to receive Narana Muni who they respected like their Guru. Kṛṣṇa was playing the part. So he was receiving the autom with all respect and devotion.
They gave a higher seat to him the raised seat for the Guru. And both Rukmiṇī and Kṛṣṇa began to lay the lotus seed of Nara. Although Nārāyaṇa knew that Kṛṣṇa was a lord, he had to go along because Kṛṣṇa was playing this pastime. So in this way. Kṛṣṇa saw that Nana Muri was disturbed. Why are you disturbed? What a day. Naramuni, you are the most sober, steady minded, peaceful sage. You are never disturbed for anything. Why today I see you disturbed for the first time. Please tell me what a day this was for Kṛṣṇa. First his queen was crying on his arrival and now his Guru is practically crying due to some disturbance. What a day. What a day. He said, My Lord, I am going around the world and I am seeing many bad signs, many bad omens.
People are becoming more materialistic and tendency to enjoy is increasing. I can see the age of Kali is coming. Soon you will leave this world. When you leave this world, People are just going to get absorbed in enjoying attitude and they will be caused so much bad karma for themselves. They will suffer so much. They will be deprived from your pure love. What is your plan? How are you going to deliver the people the ancient Kali? As a guru I am your representative. I have to deliver these people. But I can see no way to deliver them in the materialistic age of Cully without your mercy. Please bless us. What is your plan? What will you do to see these people get love for you? Then Kṛṣṇa, he replied to his two beloved devotees Rukmiṇī and Narad Muni.
Today has been a very special, very serious day for me. My queen has said I don’t know what my devotee feels for me. She said, although I am the supreme Lord, I know everything. This is the one thing I don’t know. I don’t know what it’s like to be a devotee of myself. And now you may Guru have come and you are praying for delivering our souls in the Kali Yuga. Even though I don’t count as a proclaimed incarnation. So I am going to satisfy both of your desires. In this coming age of Kali. I am going to come as my own devotee. I am going to realize what is devotion for me. I will not tell anyone publicly that I am the Lord. I am going to just count as my own devotee.
I am going to enjoy what it is to be a devotee and I am going to give devotion to everyone. What a wonderful promise of Lord Kṛṣṇa to come in the age of Kali as his own devotee and to give everyone which was never given before so freely pure bhakti. To serve Kṛṣṇa previously was very difficult. So very great. Bravanas, Rishis, moves. They were generally the devotees of Vishnu and Kṛṣṇa. It was easy to worship the Devas. So many common people, they became worshippers of the Devas. But Lord Caitanya, he has made it easy for everyone. Of course. Kṛṣṇa promised in the Bhagavad Gītā. That anyone who takes shelter of him, he will deliver. Want to speak of great pundits and kings. Even women merchants, Sudras or people born in sinful births. Anyone who takes shelter of him will be delivered. So.
But he, very few people would take shelter of Kṛṣṇa. Those who did, they got to bless him. But Chaitanya Mahāprabhu, Kṛṣṇa Chaitanya. When Kṛṣṇa came as Lord Caitanya, he gave out his Bhakti freely to everyone. He didn’t consider you’re qualified, you’re unqualified. He gave to everyone without consideration. He went to all the temples of the Devas. He went to Skanda temple, Morgan temple, Ganapati temple, Shiva temple, Devī temple, all the temples. And he requested everyone cher Hare Kṛṣṇa. In all the temples. He personally chanted respecting all the different deities of the Devas. His great devotees of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Who are powerful controllers in the universe. And he chanted the Mahā Mantra. So this is a very great opportunity. That is for Punggol. There are many special sales going on in the stores. 10% Discount. 15% 20%, 30%, 50%.
Do you also have such sales here? They have here also not so much. Then there’s Madras everywhere. Sales, Sales. Oh. But they’re now at pongal. They’re giving big percent kadika. 35% Rebate. So people are buying. This is a good time to get discount price. Today is the last day. 14. Tomorrow Pugal 15th. No more sale. So Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is giving special sale. Before you wanted Kṛṣṇa Bhakti, you wanted to get the complete perfection of life. You had to pay a high price. You have to give your whole self first to Kṛṣṇa. Then he will give himself to you. Is allowing installment payment, Credit, purchase. He is giving you the goods in advance. And you just pay by tithe. Had a very big discount. You just chant the Mahā Mantra. Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa. Everyone knows the mantra. Let’s hear Hare Kṛṣṇa.
Some may not know they’re not chanting. The Lord Caitanya. He made a process available like this very liberally to everyone. Without consideration of caste, greed, age, sex or anything. Even if someone chants other mantras or has other dk still there is no restriction to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa Mah Mantra. Everyone can chant Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahamantra and get these highest blessings of life. If one has got no desires or if one has got all material desires or if one wants Moksha. Simply by following this process one can achieve their desired result. Big big Pandits, they first thought what is Chaitanya Mahāprabhu dance doing? He’s dancing in the street with all the common people. But later when they understood from him the philosophy. That in this age of Kali this is the recommended process for self realization.
Gives this verse that in the age of Khalid we should chant the Harina. Chant the Harina. Chant the Harina. The name is Hari Vishnu Kṛṣṇa. This is the only method recommended in the Vedas for everyone. In the age of Kali. And other ways, which other way is recommended? What alternative can be taken? A step chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. No other way. No other way. No other way is recommended. Neither karma, north ghana nor ashtanga yoga. In this way chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahā Mantra has proved very successful because this is the medicine given in this age to cure our disease. Prabhupāda, his divine grace to the Ac Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda is coming in the line of Chaitanya Mah Prabhu as a bona fide Acharya. So he brought this message all over the world in 1965. And in 1966 he registered his car. In July.
So from July 1991 to July 1992 we’re observing our silver jubilee festival. This way in our year. Now all over the world, all over India there are many functions going on to celebrate this 25th anniversary of ISKCON. But of course ISKCON tradition is going back thousands of years, you know, eternally. We are coming from Lord Chaitanya whose 505 years ago he appeared in Ra. Initiation from Ishwar Purī who’s coming in the line of Madhwacharya through Madhavender Purī, Jayatirta. Is coming. Coming in the line of Lord Brahma. And Brahma is in the beginning of the universe. So our succession is coming from the very origins of this universe. It.
