Introduction: Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya-līlā, the chapter entitled is:

The Residents of Navadvīpa Reach the House of Advaita Ācārya

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.67

Nityānanda: (Hearing) Advaita! Has someone is sent to Navadvīpa.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.68

Advaita: Yes. Everyone has almost arrived.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.69

Bhagavān: Dear Advaita: We have not gone to Your home before.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.70

Advaita: Am I so fortunate like Śrīvāsa in whose house You displayed Your pastimes everyday.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.71

Nityānanda: Advaita, hereafter a great crowd will come. News of the Lord is manifest itself of it’s own accord. Still, the Lord’s going to Mathurā is widely known. At present, When the Lord, who is a nectar ocean of mercy, graces Your home, all the local people, children, young and old, will come to see Him. Before the news spreads everywhere, let us enter Your home unobserved.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.72

Advaita: So be it. (He walks a few steps) Lord, this is our home. Please enter.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.73

(thus everyone enacts entrance).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.74

A Voice from Behind the Scenes: Lord Viśvambhara cheating His mother and accepting sannyāsa was eager to go to Mathurā. Nityānanda brought Him to Śāntipura by a trick. Go! Go see Him!

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.75

Nityānanda: (listening and observing) Advaita, see that which you heard. Here itself, thousands of people have come. Without any delay, it will become hundreds of thousands. Therefore, post guards at the door!

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.76

(Advaita posts guards at each door. Keeping the Lord in front, He enters with Nityānanda and thus they exit from the stage.)

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.77:

(Many people, eager to see the Lord, enter).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.78

Some people: He is not the same, as when we saw Him in Navadvīpa. He is different, and this agitates our hearts. Ah! Ah! Still, our eagerness to see Him increases greatly. The transcendental substance has equal mellow in both original and modified form. We should know as to where is the Lord now?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.79

(They walk about).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.80

(From another direction) Other people: The sweetness that the Lord had in His previous āśrama never became the guest of our eyes (i.e., He did not address us personally). Aho! If we cannot see His beautiful form even now, then our birth in this world is worthless! Our bodies are worthless! Our lives are worthless! Our eyes are worthless!

Jayapatākā Swami: So the devotees, people are lamenting that they cant see the Lord they cant associate with the Lord and their birth is worthless, and their bodies are worthless! their lives are worthless! Their eyes are worthless! So the value is to have actual direct perception and direct service to Lord Kṛṣṇa Caitanya.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.81

Others: Dear Sir! Come! Come! It is heard that the Lord has entered Advaita's house. Therefore, let us go there. (They eagerly approach) These guards turn everyone away. It is best that they are to be pacified: they are to be paid something. (Thus they approach near).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.82

(Enter guards. They hold staff in their hands and stand at the doorway).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.83

Guards: Oh men! Stay for a moment! From the time He took sannyāsa until now the Lord has not eaten anything. Only today, He will receive alms of a meal. Therefore, please do not make an uproar. Sit down and stay for some time. See Him after He has taken His meal.

Jayapatākā Swami: They are appealing with the sentiments of people, “Let Lord Caitanya take His prasāda, His meals!”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.84

A Voice from Behind the Scenes: Lord, this way. This way.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.85

Guards: I will look. (Climbing to a higher place and craning his neck, he looks). Ah! The Lord has taken His meal. Because…

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.86

His body is anointed with sandalwood paste, clothed with fresh red (saffron) garments and His chest is decorated with a garland of white flowers. All glories to His golden splendour that is like the lustre of the red setting sun mixed with the Gaṅgā's waves or like the jewel summit of Mount Sumeru!

Jayapatākā Swami: They are appreciating Lord Caitanya beauty, one of His names is Gaurasundara, because He is so beautiful. Now is His golden body and saffron clothes of a sannyāsī, in that way He looks like with red setting sun with golden rays of Ganges like a jewel summit of the Mount Meru, the golden mountain.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.87

How will these anxious people look at Him? (He looks again) Aho! Advaitadeva has set it right nicely, because He has brought the Lord onto a raised balcony overlooking the crowd of devotees. They happily gaze on Him. The raised balcony’s name (upakārikā) has become appropriate (successful) by helping (upakārika) everyone to see the Lord. (Everyone eagerly calls out togetheer "" Haribol!

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.88

(As described, the Lord enters the balcony. Advaita and the other devotees also enter).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.89

Advaita: What kind of pastimes are You doing? You have accepted the sannyāsa-āśrama, which is so dear to the Advaitavādīs.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.90

Bhagavān: (laughing) Advaita, recollect whether we are not the worshipers of Advaita? Even though by form and gender you are different from Advaita (Parabrahman), but by svarūpa you are Advaita (non-different from) the Lord.

Jayapatākā Swami: So Lord Caitanya is revealing the spiritual position of Advaita Ācārya.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.91

Advaita: Is it possible to debating with the master of words?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.92

Bhagavān: Please understand this. Without renouncing everything it is not possible to worship and serve He who is the Lord of My life. For this reason, I have accepted sannyāsa. What is the use in our discussion about advaitavāda? I have especially taken this sannyāsī's daṇḍa only to tame the fickle animal of My mind.

Jayapatākā Swami: As there are two types of sannyāsī’s, eka-daṇḍa and trī-daṇḍa. Lord Caitanya said that, He is actually taking the Vaiṣṇava sannyāsa. Actually, He should have a trī-daṇḍa, as the eka-daṇḍa or Māyāvādī sannyāsī or Advaitavādī are those who want to merge in the brahma-jyoti. Lord Caitanya when He chanted the sannyāsa mantra of Avanti brāhmaṇa. etāṁ sa āsthāya parātma-niṣṭhām adhyāsitāṁ pūrvatamair mahadbhiḥ ahaṁ tariṣyāmi duranta-pāraṁ tamo mukundāṅghri-niṣevayaiva [Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 11.23.57] He was inspired to cross over this material world by serving the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa or Lord Mukunda. He was showing everyone how they should focus their mind by serving Kṛṣṇa.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.93

Advaita: All this is a trick. You have accepted the sannyāsa to fulfill these words: sannyāsa-kṛc chamaḥ śānto niṣṭhā-śānti-parāyaṇaḥ:” In His later pastimes He accepts the sannyāsa order, and He is equipoised and peaceful. He is the highest abode of peace and devotion, for He silences the impersonalist’s non devotees. [Note: This is a verse from the Mahābhārata (Dāna-dharma, Viṣṇu-sahasra-nāma-stotra) as translated by Prabhupāda in Cc Ādi 3.49]

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.94

A Guard: (looking at all the people in front) Wonderful! In this uncountable densely crowded assembly of people having different natures of high and low are situated peacefully in their respective places and gaze at the Lord to their heart's content, and the Lord also glances on them with great mercy.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.95

This vision does not go in vain. Because they each describe their great good fortune by saying: “Now we have crossed the ocean of repeated birth and death. The gate to Yama's kingdom is now closed for us. Now we have attained the ripened fruit of this human birth. Now we have attained the results of all penances and austerities. We have attained all this by seeing the sweet, merciful, sidelong glance of the Lord.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Having the Lord’s association, seeing the Lord gives one spiritual perfection, That all the people in Śāntipura realised.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.96

(Tumultuous sounds from behind the scenes).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.97

People: Now the people from the Lord's birthplace (Navadvīpa) have come. There will be a very great crowd. Let us leave. (Everyone exits).

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 1.221

śrī-nityānandera bhaktagaṇa-saṅge nadīyā haite āgamana—

henai samaye śrī-ananta-nityānanda
āilā nadīyā haite saṅge bhakta-vṛnda

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time Lord Śrī Nityānanda, who is Ananta Śeṣa, arrived from Navadvīpa/Nadia with the assembly of devotees.   (All the residents of Navadvīpa enter).

The residents of Navadvīpa: Our eyes had become blind (being bereft of Caitanya), but today all directions are blissful. The vines of our desire to live had withered away, but now they are bursting with new shoots. Our hearts had died (without Caitanya), but now the life (Caitanya) is again placed within them. This has happened because of Caitanya Candrodaya (the moon of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has risen) before us. (They eagerly approach).

Jayapatākā Swami: The meaning of ‘Caitanya’ also means ‘Living force’. When Lord Caitanya left it was as if their life left and when He came back as if they regained their Caitanya or their life back.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.99

(looking) Headed by Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita and others, friends, children, youth and elderly, keeping the Lord's mother in front have assembled. What more need I say. That place (Navadvīpa) and that time (when the Lord appeared) has appeared here now.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 1.222

śrīvāsādi-bhakta-gaṇa dekhiyāṭhākura
lāgilena hari-dhvani karite pracura

Jayapatākā Swami: So Śrīvāsa and all the devotees when they saw Lord Caitanya, they began to loudly chant the Holy name of Hari. “Hari bol! Hari bol! Hari bol! Gaurāṅga!”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 14.80

jaya jaya-dhvani śuni hari-hari bola
sakala vaiṣṇava-hiyā ānandahillola

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the words “Jaya! Jaya!” and “Hari! Haribol!” All Vaiṣṇava’s heart was overwhelmed with waves of transcendental bliss.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 14.81

tejaḥ dekhi’ ānandita hailā haridāsa
murāri, mukundadatta āra śrīnivāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing the Lord Gaurāṅga's effulgence, Haridāsa Ṭhākura, Murāri, Mukunda Datta, and Śrīvāsa became filled with transcendental bliss.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.100

(Bhagavān enacts quickly descending from the balcony).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.101

(The Guards respectfully allow them to enter).

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 1.223

daṇḍavata haiyā sakala bhakta-gaṇa
krandana karena sabe dhari' śrī-caraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: All the assembled devotees offered their prostrated obeisances to the Lord and they began to cry in ecstasy as they held the Lord's lotus feet.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 1.224

prabhura sneha-kṛpā o bhaktagaṇera jīva-vandhana-vināśana ānanda krandana—

sabāre karilā prabhu āliṅgana dāna
sabei prabhura nija-prāṇera samāna

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord Caitanya, He gave His embrace to everyone of them, for the Lord considered them equal to His own life.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 1.225

ārta-nāde rodana karaye bhakta-gaṇa
śuniyā pavitra haya sakala bhuvana

Jayapatākā Swami: The devotees' loud crying in ecstasy The vibration of devotees' loud crying in ecstasy purified the entire world.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 14.82

daṇḍa-paraṇāma kare bhūmite paḍiyā
chala chala kare āṁkhi vadana dekhiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Falling on the ground, and offering their prostrated obeisances like sticks. As they see the Lord's face, tears flowed from their eyes.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 14.83

ānanda-gadagad svara–aṅga pulakita
maila-śarīre jīu āila ācambita

Jayapatākā Swami: Their voices were choked with ecstasy. The hairs of their bodies stood erect. The bodies that were once almost dead were now suddenly filled with life.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 1.226

kṛṣṇa-premānande kānde se sukṛti jana
se dhvani-śravaṇe sarva-bandha-vimocana

Jayapatākā Swami: The fortunate persons were crying in ecstatic love for Lord Kṛṣṇa. By hearing that auspicious sound, all material bondage was destroyed. So the transcendental vibration of devotees crying for Lord Caitanya liberated the listeners.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 1.227

caitanya-prasāde vyakta haila hena dhana
brahmādi-durlabha rasa bhuñje ye-te-jana

Jayapatākā Swami: By the mercy of Lord Caitanya such a treasure was manifested. Even great personalities like devas headed by Brahmā the ecstatic mellows of love of Kṛṣṇa was revealed to everyone. Everyone was able to relish that.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 14.84

henamane nijajane dekhi’ gaurārāya
kṛpādiṭhe cāhe–dayā bāḍhila hiyāya

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way His own devotees gazed at Lord Gaura Rāya. With eyes filled with mercy Lord Gaurāṅga glanced at everyone. In Lord Gaurāṅga's heart, the mercy increased.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 14.85

kāre nija kare prabhu paraśana kare
hāsiyā sambhāṣe’ kāho koli cāpi dhare

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga, He touched personally someone and with someone He smiled and joked and talked. Someone else He tightly embraced. Lord Caitanya was very personal and with different devotees He was reciprocating their natural love for Him and in his heart His feelings of mercy was increasing.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 14.86

yāra yei abhimata karaye ṭhākura
sabhāra antare premā bāḍhila pracura

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way Lord Gaurāṅga filled the desires of each devotee. Every heart the spiritual love for Lord Krishna increased unlimitedly.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 14.87

hṛṣṭa hailā sabajana–dūre gelā śoka
ānande maṅgaladhvani hari bole loka

Jayapatākā Swami: Everyone was delighted. All grief and lamentation went far away. Everyone chanted auspicious sounds with great ecstasy, “Hari bol! Hari bol! Hari bol!”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.108

(The Lord greets everyone, pleasing them with appropriate embraces, touches, glances, questions, and other actions).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.109

Advaita: (again hastily enters) Who is staying where? There must be residences, food, drink, and other necessities as one likes to please everyone beginning from caṇḍālas and the children, young and old.

Jayapatākā Swami: The gṛhastha-āśrama is concerned with providing facilities for all the unexpected guests. But here hundreds of thousands of people came still Advaita is thinking how to give everyone place to stay.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.110

One man: (Tossing aside the curtain, he hastily enters). I will do this as per your instruction. (He exits).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.111

Advaita: (approaching the Lord) I am the same (object of Your favour) as before, same are these people (Śrīvāsa and Your friends), same are You (our dearmost friend), same is their loving mellows towards You and same is Your mercy towards them. All these are the only reason of our happiness, but Your appearance otherwise (as a sannyāsī) is the reason for displeasure.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 5.112

Bhagavān: Advaita, Advaita, don't talk like this. My body has fallen into a dark nectar-river, and whatever state I obtain by being tossed by that river's mighty waves whether be it auspicious or inauspicious, in all condition, that very state itself makes My love (for Kṛṣṇa) eminent again and again. (I have accepted sannyāsa for attaining kṛṣṇa-prema and so I will not give it up). Come here. Having seen them (Śrīvāsa etc…) after a long time, let us sit together and experience love equally. (Thus, everyone exits). let us sit together and experience love equally. (Thus, everyone exits).

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya accepted sannyāsa to experience His love for Kṛṣṇa and that can be reversed but now is that He is reunited with His friends and devotees, he wants to give them His mercy. So today, the class started a little late. At 8.30 I have another appointment. I extend my blessings to all those who are present.

Kṛṣṇe matir astu!
