Jayapatākā Swami: So today we will continue with the compilation reading of the Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book. We are happy to see so many devotees. We also welcome His Holiness Bhakti Nityānanda Swami. Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare / Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare! So today we had the physiotherapy in the morning, and we had Punjabi paneer parathas in breakfast. Then I attended the physiotherapy. Tomorrow there is no physical therapy but there is an international meeting on the internet on the TOVP exhibitions. Today we answered some of the emails. But there are still some pending. I am very happy to see all the devotees here. Now we will continue with the reading.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.254
śiṣya bale,—“paṇḍita, ucita vyākhyā kara’”
prabhu bale,—“sarva-kṣaṇa śrī-kṛṣṇa smaṅara
Translation: The students asked, “O Paṇḍita, please explain properly.” The Lord replied, “Every moment remember Kṛṣṇa.
Commentary: The word ucita means “proper,” “reasonable,” or “logical.”
Jayapatākā Swami: The disciples asked, “oh Paṇḍita, please give proper explanation, which is logical and appropriate.” Lord Viśvambhara replied, “every moment, remember Śrī Kṛṣṇa.” Haribol!
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.255
kṛṣṇera bhajana kahi—samyak āmnāya
ādi-madhya-ante kṛṣṇa bhajana bujhāya”
Translation: “I am explaining to you about the worship of Kṛṣṇa, which is the purport of the beginning, middle, and end of all Vedic literature.”
Commentary: The phrase samyak āmnāya is explained as follows: The śāstras that instruct one about the supremacy of Lord Viṣṇu are called āmnāya; the śāstras that are always discussed by great sages who have realized the Supreme Brahman are called āmnāya; and the śāstras that instruct human beings about supreme religious principles so that they may attain the goal of life are called āmnāya. In his commentary on the word samāmnāya found in Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (10.47.33), Śrīdhara Svāmipāda explains, samāmnāyo vedaḥ “knowledge of the Vedas is received through disciplic succession.”
In the Bhagavad-gītā (15.15) Lord Kṛṣṇa speaks to Arjuna as follows:
sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo
mattaḥ smṛtir jñānam apohanaṁ ca
vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyo
vedānta-kṛd veda-vid eva cāham
“I am seated in everyone’s heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedānta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.”
In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (12.13.1) Śrī Sūta Gosvāmī speaks to the sages headed by Śaunaka as follows:
yaṁ brahmā varuṇendra-rudra-marutaḥ stunvanti divyaiḥ stavair
vedaiḥ sāṅga-pada-kramopaniṣadair gāyanti yaṁ sāma-gāḥ
dhyānāvasthita-tad-gatena manasā paśyanti yaṁ yogino
yasyāntaṁ na viduḥ surāsura-gaṇā devāya tasmai namaḥ
“Unto that personality whom Brahmā, Varuṇa, Indra, Rudra and the Maruts praise by chanting transcendental hymns and reciting the Vedas with all their corollaries, pada-kramas and Upaniṣads, to whom the chanters of the Sāma Veda always sing, whom the perfected yogīs see within their minds after fixing themselves in trance and absorbing themselves within Him, and whose limit can never be found by any demigod or demon—unto that Supreme Personality of Godhead I offer my humble obeisances.”
In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (11.21.42-43) Lord Kṛṣṇa speaks the following words to Uddhava:
kiṁ vidhatte kim ācaṣṭe
kim anūdya vikalpayet
ity asyā hṛdayaṁ loke
nānyo mad veda kaścana
māṁ vidhatte ’bhidhatte māṁ
vikalpyāpohyate tv aham
etāvān sarva-vedārthaḥ
śabda āsthāya māṁ bhidām
māyā-mātram anūdyānte
pratiṣidhya prasīdati
“In the entire world no one but Me actually understands the confidential purpose of Vedic knowledge. Thus people do not know what the Vedas are actually prescribing in the ritualistic injunctions of karma-kāṇḍa, or what object is actually being indicated in the formulas of worship found in the upāsanā-kāṇḍa, or that which is elaborately discussed through various hypotheses in the jñāna-kāṇḍa section of the Vedas. I am the ritualistic sacrifice enjoined by the Vedas, and I am the worshipable Deity. It is I who am presented as various philosophical hypotheses, and it is I alone who am then refuted by philosophical analysis. The transcendental sound vibration thus establishes Me as the essential meaning of all Vedic knowledge. The Vedas, elaborately analyzing all material duality as nothing but My illusory potency, ultimately completely negate this duality and achieve their own satisfaction.”
In the Hari-vaṁśa it is stated: “Throughout the Vedas, the Rāmāyaṇa, the Purāṇas, and the Mahābhārata, from beginning to end, only the glories of the Supreme Lord Hari are sung.”
Jayapatākā Swami: “Please worship Kṛṣṇa. I am telling you about His worship, worship of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Which is the purport of the beginning, middle and end of all the Vedas, all Vedic literatures.”
So āmnāya is used to describe many things. The śāstra or scriptures that instruct one about the supremacy of the Lord Viṣṇu, are called āmnāya. The scriptures which are always discussed by great sages who have realized the Supreme Brahman, are called āmnāya. And the śāstra or scriptures that instruct human beings about the Supreme principles, so that they may attain the goal of life, are called āmnāya. So āmnāya is used in all these ways.
In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10th canto 47th chap 33 verse, the purport of the word samāmnāya is found in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Another meaning is that Vedic knowledge which is received through the guru-paramparā or disciplic succession. So there are many quotes from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam which explain how Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme and how everything comes from Him. So there are rituals which produce good karma, and the section is called karma-kāṇḍa. Ritualistic ceremonies which produce good karma are called karma-kāṇḍa. And the formulae for worshipping the Supreme Lord are found in the upāsana-kāṇḍa or the worship process. So Kṛṣṇa is explaining how He is the ultimate goal of all the Vedas but that His illusory energy ultimately negates Kṛṣṇa’s Absolute position and engages the conditioned souls in serving the material nature for their own satisfaction. So in the Hari-Vamśa it is stated throughout the Vedas, Rāmayaṇa, the Purāṇas, Mahābhārata, from beginning to end only the glories of the Supreme Lord Hari are sung.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.256
śuniyā prabhura vyākhyā hāse śiṣya-gaṇa
keho bale,—“hena bujhi vāyura kāraṇa”
Translation: Hearing the Lord’s explanation, the students began to laugh. Some remarked, “It appears He is affected by an imbalance of life airs.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the Lord’s explanation, some of the students began to laugh. They said, “now we understand that maybe the life air is affected and that is the cause of His condition.”
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.257
śiṣya-varga bale,—“ebe kemata vākhāna?”
prabhu bale,—“yena haya śāstrera pramāṇa”
Translation: The students asked, “From where did You get this explanation?” The Lord replied, “This is the verdict of the scriptures.”
Commentary: The students asked the Lord, “How have You given such a strange explanation?” The Lord answered, “I have explained according to the conclusions and consistency of the scriptures.”
Jayapatākā Swami: His students or disciples asked, “How did you… where did You get this explanation?” The Lord replied, “this is the verdict of all Vedic scriptures.” So the students thought that the Lord was giving a strange explanation. But the Lord answered, “I have explained according to the conclusions and consistency of the śāstras.”
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.258
prabhu bale,—“yadi nāhi bujhaha ekhane
vikāle sakala bujhāiba bhāla mane
Translation: The Lord said, “If you cannot understand now, then I will explain to you in detail this afternoon.
Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord said, “if you cannot understand Me now, in the afternoon, I will explain to you in detail.”
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.259
āmiha virale giyā vasi’ puṅthi cāi
vikāle sakale yena hai eka ṭhāṅi”
Translation: “I will also go sit in a solitary place and look at My books. Let us meet together in the afternoon.”
Commentary: The words puṅthi cāi, or cinti, mean “to study a book.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Also the Lord said, “I will also go and sit in a solitary place and look at My books. So let us meet together in the afternoon.”
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.260
chātragaṇera prasthāna o gaṅgādāsa-samīpe prabhura kṛṣṇābhīṣṭa-vyākhyā o līlāra varṇana evaṁ parāmarśa-jijñāsā—
śuniyā prabhura vākya sarva śiṣya-gaṇa
kautuke pustaka bāndhi’ karilā gamana
Translation: Hearing the Lord’s words, all the students packed up their book and left.
Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the explanation of the Lord, all His disciples, or the students, in a happy mood, bound their books and left.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.261
sarva-śiṣya gaṅgādāsa-paṇḍitera sthāne
kahilena saba—yata ṭhākura vākhāne
Translation: All the students reported to Gaṅgādāsa Paṇḍita everything that Nimāi had explained to them.
Jayapatākā Swami: All the disciples went to the place of Gaṅgādāsa Paṇḍita who was the Sanskrit teacher of Lord Caitanya, of Nimāi, and they explained everything that Nimāi had explained to them.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.262
“ebe yata vākhānena nimāñi-paṇḍita
śabda-sane vākhānena kṛṣṇa-samīhita
Translation: “In every explanation that Nimāi Paṇḍita has given recently, He explains Kṛṣṇa as the meaning of every word.
Commentary: The word samīhita means “complete,” “desired,” “intention,” “wish,” or “purport.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Now in every explanation of Nimāi Paṇḍita He explains Kṛṣṇa as the meaning of every word.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.263
gayā haite yāvat āsiyāchena ghare
tadavadhi kṛṣṇa bai vyākhyā nāhi sphure
Translation: “Since He has returned from Gayā, He does not mention anything other than Kṛṣṇa in His explanations.
Jayapatākā Swami: Since the Lord had returned from Gayā to His house, He doesn’t mention anything but Kṛṣṇa in His explanations.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.264
sarvadā balena ’kṛṣṇa’—pulakita-aṅga
kṣaṇe hāsya, huṅkāra, karaye bahu raṅga
Translation: “He always chants the name of Kṛṣṇa, and the hairs of His body stand on end. Sometimes He laughs or shouts loudly as He manifests different moods.
Jayapatākā Swami: He always chants the name of Kṛṣṇa and His hairs on His body are standing on end. Sometimes He laughs, sometimes He shouts loudly, in this way He manifests many different moods.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.265
prati-śabde dhātu-sūtra ekatra kariyāprati-
dina kṛṣṇa-vyākhyā karena vasiyā
Translation: “Every day He takes the dhātu, or verbal root, of every word and explains Kṛṣṇa through grammatical rules.
Commentary: Through the process of grammatical derivation extended to its natural logical limit, Śrī Gaurāṅgadeva brought together the verbal root, or original form, of every word with the sūtras for generating each word’s base and inflections in such a way as to explain them all as referring to Kṛṣṇa.
Jayapatākā Swami: Every word of Lord Viśvambhara or Nimāi Paṇḍita, He explains the verbal root of every word and explains Kṛṣṇa through grammatical rules, as He is sitting down giving His lessons.
So through the process of Sanskrit grammar, He found the grammatical derivation extended to its logical limit. Śrī Gauraṅgadeva, He brought one to understand the verbal root of the original sound of every word with the sūtras by generating each word base and inflections in such a way as to explain them all as referring to Kṛṣṇa.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.266
ebe tāna bujhibāre nā pāri carita
ki kariba āmi-saba?—balaha, paṇḍita!”
Translation: “O Paṇḍita, we are unable to understand His present characteristics, so please tell us what to do.”
Jayapatākā Swami: So we are not able to understand His present characteristic, what shall we do? Please tell us, oh great Paṇḍita!
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.267
chātragaṇera abhiyoga-śravaṇe gaṅgādāsa paṇḍitera hāsya o tāhādigake sāntvanā—

śuniyā sabāra vākya upajila hāsa
Translation: Hearing the students’ words, the brāhmaṇa Gaṅgādāsa Paṇḍita, who is the crest jewel of teachers, burst into laughter.
Jayapatākā Swami: The crest jewel of the brāhmaṇas, Gaṅgādāsa Vipra or Gaṅgādāsa Paṇḍita hearing the students’ explanation, he burst into laughter.

āji āmi śikṣāiba tāṅhāre vikāle
Translation: Gaṅgādāsa said, “Go home now and return soon. This afternoon I will instruct Him.
Jayapatākā Swami: So Gaṅgādāsa Paṇḍita said, “go home now, everyone go home. And return soon. Today I will go and instruct Nimāi Paṇḍita in the afternoon.”
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.269
bhāla mata kari’ yena paḍāyena puṅthi

This is the end of the chapter.
