Jayapatākā Swami: Today we are continuing reading and compiling the Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book. We have many visitors here. We thank all of you for coming. And so far 105 on Facebook! But we hope more will come! So we got some news that in Avatārī Deśa in the Middle East a group of single devotees, who are married people and their wives are in India but they are staying in the Middle East. This group in the month of Dāmodara, they were able to engage 30,000 people to do offering of lamp to Dāmodara. I hope they will send their results to the Congregational Development Ministry. It seems that the total will be more than one million lamps, combining all over the world. So we are very grateful that these bachelors, and these single married men have done such a tremendous sevā, in spite of their heavy workload they found time to cultivate so many people. Normally those conditioned souls are very busy how to have sensual enjoyment but real happiness, the real satisfaction comes when we please guru and Kṛṣṇa and we have a service attitude rather than being a godaasa or a slave to the senses we become Gosvāmīs or the controller of the senses.

So today I had physiotherapy. I had voice therapy, and I met with various devotees. I talked over the phone to the devotees in Avatārī Deśa. So like this, we hope that everyone will use their energies to please Kṛṣṇa and to help people become liberated. So now we will start the reading.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.339

putra-buddhi chāḍi’ ajāmila se smaraṇe
calilā vaikuṇṭha, bhaja se kṛṣṇa-caraṇe

Translation: “By remembering that the holy name was not really that of his son, Ajāmila attained Vaikuṇṭha. Therefore worship the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa.

Commentary: Although the most sinful Ajāmila first uttered the name Nārāyaṇa referring to his son, as soon as he gave up thoughts of his son as the object of enjoyment and simultaneously remembered that the sound vibration of Nārāyaṇa is nondifferent from Nārāyaṇa Himself, he immediately attained liberation by the influence of nāmābhāsa resulting from remembering Kṛṣṇa. He was then able to enter the kingdom of Vaikuṇṭha, which is transcendental, beyond the reach of the senses, and beyond the jurisdiction of māyā.

For a description of Ajāmila’s life one should see Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Canto Six, Chapter One, verses 21-68, as well as Chapters Two and Three.

Jayapatākā Swami: This is Lord Caitanya speaking to His students. He talked about Ajāmila that He remembered that his son who was named Nārāyaṇa and who he called out at the time of leaving his body, “Nārāyaṇa!” So then he remembered that this name is not the name of his son originally but this holy name is the name of Nārāyaṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. By remembering this he ultimately went to Vaikuṇṭa. So worship the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

So Ajāmila was the most fallen sinful person. He first uttered the name Nārāyaṇa for calling his son. As soon as he gave up the idea that his son was who this name referred to, and that Nārāyaṇa, name is non-different from the person, he immediately attained liberation by the influence of nāmābhāsa, the accidently chanting of the holy name and with that alone he was able to enter the spiritual kingdom of VAIKUṆṬA, which is transcendental, beyond the region of mundane senses and beyond the jurisdiction of Māyā, the illusory energy of Kṛṣṇa. You will find the description of Ajāmila’s life in Śrīmad Bhāgavatam Canto 6, chapter 1, verses 21-68 as well as chapter 2 and 3 of Canto 6.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.340

yāṅhāra caraṇa sevi’ śiva—digambara
ye-caraṇa sevibāre lakṣmīra ādara

Translation: “While serving His lotus feet, Śiva goes about naked. The service of those lotus feet is desired by Lakṣmī.

Commentary: In the Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa it is stated:

yat pādodakam ādhāya  śivaḥśirasi nṛtyati
yan nābhi-nalinād āsīd  brahmā loka-pitāmahaḥ
yad-icchā-śakti-vikṣobhād  brahmāṇḍodbhava-saṅkṣayau
tam ārādhaya govindaṁ  sthānam agryaṁ yad īcchati

“If one desires the topmost abode, he should worship the lotus feet of Śrī Govinda; for Śiva dances in ecstasy after accepting on his head water that has washed His lotus feet; Brahmā, the grandfather of mankind, is born from His lotus navel; and the creation and destruction of the universe take place simply as a result of being agitated by the power of His desire.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Śiva is going around naked; He serves the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Those lotus feet are served by Lakṣmī devī with great – Lakṣmī devī wants to serve those lotus feet with great desire.

So the Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa also states the glories of Kṛṣṇa. That if one wants to achieve the topmost abode, he should worship the lotus feet of Lord Govinda.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.341

ananta ye caraṇa-mahimā-guṇa gāya
dante tṛṇa kari’ bhaja hena kṛṣṇa-pāya

Translation: “Take straw between your teeth and worship Kṛṣṇa, whose lotus feet are glorified by Lord Ananta

Jayapatākā Swami: Anantadeva, glorifies the lotus feet, the glories and the qualities to those lotus feet, one should take a straw in the teeth and worship those lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.342

anumṛtyu yāvat sarvāśraya kṛṣṇapādapadma-bhajanārtha sakalake anurodha—

yāvat āchaye prāṇa, dehe āche śakti
tāvat karaha kṛṣṇa-pāda-padme bhakti

Translation: “As long as there is life and strength in your body, you should render devotional service to the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa.

Commentary: In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (11.9.29) the mendicant brāhmaṇa speaks to the King of the Yadus as follows:

labdhvā su-durlabham idaṁ bahu-sambhavānte
mānuṣyam artha-dam anityam apīha dhīraḥ
tūrṇaṁ yateta na pated anu-mṛtyu yāvan
niḥśreyasāya viṣayaḥ khalu sarvataḥ syāt

“After many, many births and deaths one achieves the rare human form of life, which, although temporary, affords one the opportunity to attain the highest perfection. Thus a sober human being should quickly endeavor for the ultimate perfection of life as long as his body, which is always subject to death, has not fallen down and died. After all, sense gratification is available even in the most abominable species of life, whereas Kṛṣṇa consciousness is possible only for a human being.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Render devotional service to the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa, as long as one has life, as long as their body has the strength.

In Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 11th canto, 9th chapter, 29th verse, the mendicant, the brāhmaṇa speaks the following to the king of the Yadus:

“After many, many births and deaths one achieves the rare human form of life, which, although temporary, affords one the opportunity to attain the highest perfection. Thus a sober human being should quickly endeavor for the ultimate perfection of life as long as his body, which is always subject to death, has not fallen down and died. After all, sense gratification is available even in the most abominable species of life, whereas Kṛṣṇa consciousness is possible only for a human being.”

So this point Lord Caitanya is teaching to His students that being a human being and being born as a brāhmaṇa in Navadvīpa, they should worship Kṛṣṇa as long as they have life in their body. So this instruction is very potent and people today, they should also take advantage of Lord Caitanya and Śrīmad Bhāgavatam’s instructions. The purpose of human life is to understand our real relationship with Kṛṣṇa, to develop our Kṛṣṇa consciousness and to awaken our dormant love for Kṛṣṇa. So this truth is largely absent from the modern psyche. People do not think that the human life is meant for understanding the higher spiritual goal. Instead they find unique ways to waste the valuable human form of life, like sports, people surfing - Prabhupāda called them “sufferers”, they were surfers but Prabhupāda called them “sufferers” - so many activities but they are not including Kṛṣṇa. So Lord Caitanya gave us a process which is simply blissful, singing Hare Kṛṣṇa, dancing Hare Kṛṣṇa, studying the teachings of Lord Kṛṣṇa and serving Lord Kṛṣṇa and feasting on His prasāda.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.343

kṛṣṇa mātā, kṛṣṇa pitā, kṛṣṇa prāṇa dhana
caraṇe dhariyā bali,—‘kṛṣṇe deha, mana’”

Translation: “Kṛṣṇa is your mother, Kṛṣṇa is your father, Kṛṣṇa is your life and wealth. I fall at your feet and beg you to engage your minds in thinking of Kṛṣṇa.”

Commentary: In the Caitanya-candrāmṛta (90) it is stated:

dante nidhāya tṛṇakaṁ padayor nipatya
kṛtvā ca kāku-śatam etad ahaṁ bravīmi
he sādhavaḥ sakalam eva vihāya dūrād
gaurāṅga-candra-caraṇe kurutānurāgam

“Taking a straw in my teeth I fall at your feet hundreds of times and implore you with sweet words, saying, ’O noble soul! Please throw out everything you have learned and cultivate attachment to the lotus feet of Śrī Gaurāṅga.’”

In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (7.1.32) Nārada Muni speaks to Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira as follows: tasmāt kenāpy upāyena manaḥ kṛṣṇe niveśayet—“Somehow or other, one must engage his mind in thinking of Kṛṣṇa.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Kṛṣṇa is your Mother; Kṛṣṇa is your Father. Kṛṣṇa is your life and wealth. I fall at your lotus feet… at your feet and beg you, engage your minds in thinking of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

So this verse is from the Caitanya-candrāmṛta (90), states that someone has a very humble mood, he falls at the feet of some person, hundreds of times and he implores him with sweet words saying, “Oh noble soul, please throw out everything you have learnt, cultivate attachment to the lotus feet of Śrī Gaurāṅga!” GAURĀṄGA! GAURĀṄGA!

Similarly, one devotee went to a Kazi, another Kazi, not Chand Kazi, and he said, “Please chant Hare Kṛṣṇa.” He said, “I will chant Hare Kṛṣṇa tomorrow.” So he said, “Oh, you just chanted Hare Kṛṣṇa!! Don’t stop now!!” And then one devotee went to a very aristocratic man and he said, “You are born in a very good family, you are handsome, you are rich, you are educated, you have all the good qualities, I have just one thing to request you, please.” He said, “Okay”. He said, “Forget everything you know, everything you have leave aside and take up the shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Gaurāṅga.” GAURĀṄGA!! So these devotees of Lord Gaurāṅga would preach in these bold ways.

In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7th canto, 1st chapter 32nd verse, Nārada Muni speaks to Yudhiṣṭhira Mahārāja as follows: “Somehow or other one must engage his mind in thinking of Kṛṣṇa.” Haribol!

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.344

prabhura aphurantabhāve nijābhinna kṛṣṇa-mahimā-kīrtana—

dāsya-bhāve kahe prabhu āpana-mahim
āhaila prahara dui, tabu nāhi sīmā

Translation: In the mood of a servant, the Lord continually narrated His own glories until half of the day had passed.

Commentary: The word sīmā means “the end,” “completion,” “retirement,” “finished.”

Jayapatākā Swami: In the mood of a servant, Gaura Mahāprabhu singing His own glories, since He is Kṛṣṇa Himself, half the day passed. But there was no end in sight.

The word “sīmā” means the end, completion and finished. So there is a song in the adhivāsa kīrtana-yajña. So they say that when we chant for 24 hours from morning to next morning and the night before they do adhivāsa, one of the stanzas is ānanadera sīmā nai, ānandera sīmā nai, there is no limit to the bliss. ānanadera sīmā nai, nirānanda dūre jāy - sadness goes far away – nirānanda dūre jāya. Sing, ānanadera sīmā nai, ānandera sīmā nai, nirānanda dūre jāy, nirānanda dūre jāy.
