Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.345

tacchravaṇe chātragaṇera vismaya o moha—

mohita paḍuyā-saba śune eka-mane
dvirukti karite kāro nā āise vadane

Translation: The charmed students heard the Lord’s explanation with rapt attention. None of them dared to open their mouths.

Jayapatākā Swami:  All the students were in wonder and they were listening with rapt attention. Nobody expressed their impatience or any complaint from their mouths.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.346

ai chātragaṇa niścayai kṛṣṇera nijajana pārṣada—

se-saba kṛṣṇera dāsa,—jāniha niścaya
kṛṣṇa yāṅre paḍāyena, se ki anya haya?

Translation: Know for certain that they are all eternal servants of Kṛṣṇa. When Kṛṣṇa Himself is teaching them, can they be anyone else?

Commentary: See the following verse 397.

Jayapatākā Swami:  So these students were all Kṛṣṇa’s eternal associates. You should know this for certain. Whoever Kṛṣṇa teaches, is that person is an associate of the Lord?

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.347

prabhura vāhya-jñāna-lābha o lajjā-bodha—

kata-kṣaṇe bāhya prakāśilā viśvambhara
cāhiyā sabāra mukha—lajjita-antara

Translation: After a while, Viśvambhara manifested His external consciousness. He felt ashamed by looking at everyone’s face there.

Jayapatākā Swami:  After some time, Lord Viśvambhara He achieved His external consciousness and He looked at everybody’s face and He was feeling ashamed inside Himself.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.348

prabhura jijñāsāra uttare chātragaṇera prabhukṛta vyākhyāra satyatva-jñāpana—

prabhu bale,—“dhātu-sūtra vākhāniluṅ kena?”
paḍuyā sakala bale,—“satya artha yena

Translation: The Lord asked, “How was My explanation of the sūtras on dhātus?” The students replied, “Your explanation was correct.

Commentary: The word kena means “how” or “in which way,” the word yena means “as” or “in this way.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  The Lord asked, “so the dhatu-sūtra or the essence of the verbs, why don’t you refute it?” No students replied because “Your explanation was true.”

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.349

ye-śabde ye-artha tumi karilā vākhāna
kār bāpe tāhā karibāre pāre āna?

Translation: “There is no one arrogant enough to deny the meaning of every word that You have explained.

Commentary: The word āna means “otherwise,” “contradictory,” “opposing.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  The word which meaning was explained by you, what person can give another explanation?

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.350

yateka vākhāna’ tumi,—saba satya haya
sabe ye uddeśe paḍi,—tāra artha naya”

Translation: “Whatever You explained is perfectly true, but the aim for which we study is different.”

Commentary: “The meanings of words that You present and have presented through vidvad-rūḍhi is the only actual eternal truth. The meaning of the words that we explain through ajña-rūḍhi, though bearing the apparent meaning, is not the actual truth but a useless interpretation.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  Whatever You explained is perfectly true. But the purpose for which we studied is different.

So the students were saying the meaning of the words that You have presented thru vidvad-rūḍhi is the only actual eternal truth The meaning of the words that we explained thru ajña-rūḍhi though giving the apparent meaning, is not the actual truth but useless interpretation.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.351

āpanāke vāyugrasta baliyā prabhura vañcanā-ceṣṭā—

prabhu bale,—“kaha dekhi āmāre sakala?
vāyu vā āmāre kariyāche ye vihvala

Translation: The Lord said, “Would you explain to Me everything I said? Perhaps I have been overwhelmed by a disorder of the nerves.

Jayapatākā Swami:  The Lord said explain to Me everything that I said. Perhaps due to disturbed vāyu, or due to My being overwhelmed, I have explained things overly.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.352

prabhura jijñāsāra uttare chātragaṇera prabhu-kṛta alaukika kṛṣṇapara-vyākhyā, tadīya alaukika-jñāna o apūrva-rūpa-varṇana—

sūtra-rūpe kon vṛtti kariye vākhāna?”
śiṣya-varga bale,—“sabe eka hari-nāma

Translation: “What import of the sūtras did I explain?” The students replied, “You have explained the name of Hari in all of them.

Jayapatākā Swami:  What basis or meanings that I give for all the explanation of the sutras said Nimāi Paṇḍita. The students replied, some way everything is simply hari-nāma in all of the sutras.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.353

sūtra-vṛtti-ṭīkāya vākhāna’ kṛṣṇa mātra
bujhite tomāra vyākhyā kebā āche pātra?

Translation: “You have explained that Kṛṣṇa alone is the meaning of the sūtras, the brief explanations, and the commentaries. But who is qualified to understand Your explanations?

Jayapatākā Swami:  Nimāi Paṇḍita, You have explained how Kṛṣṇa alone is the real meaning of the sūtras, the great explanation and the commentaries, but who is qualified to understand Your explanation?

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.354

bhaktira śravaṇe ye tomāra āsi’ haye
tāhāte tomāre kabhu nara-jñāna nahe”

Translation: “By the transformations You undergo while hearing about devotional service, one can never consider You an ordinary human being.”

Commentary: The first line of the verse is explained as follows: “As a result of hearing the previously quoted verses indicating the glories of devotional service to Kṛṣṇa, You manifested various extraordinary transcendental transformations of ecstatic love.”

The phrase nara-jñāna nahe means “one cannot consider You a product of matter.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  When you hear the explanation of devotional service, transformation should go thru. One can never think You as an ordinary human being.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.355

prabhu bale,—“kon-rūpa dekhaha āmāre?”
paḍuyā sakale bale,—“yata camatkāre

Translation: The Lord said, “In what form do you regard Me?” The students replied, “As the perfection of all excellence.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.356

ye kampa, ye aśru, ye vā pulaka tomāra
āmarā ta’ kothā kabhu nāhi dekhi āra

Translation: “We have never before seen the tears of love, the shivering, and the hairs standing on end that You manifest.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.361

āpādamastaka haila pulake unnati
lālā-gharma-dhūlāya vyāpita gaura-mūrti

Translation: “The hairs of Your entire body stood on end, and Your golden form was smeared with sweat, saliva, and dust.

Commentary: The phrase pulake unnati means “hairs standing on end.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  The body hairs stood on end, the golden form was smeared with perspiration, saliva and dust.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.362

prabhura premavikāra-darśane nānājanera nānā-mata-varṇana—

apūrva bhāvaye saba,—dekhe yata jana
sabei balena,—’e puruṣa nārāyaṇa’

Translation: “Everyone who saw You was struck with wonder and said, ’This person is Nārāyaṇa Himself.’

Jayapatākā Swami:  Anyone who saw You was struck with wonder and said “this person is Nārāyaṇa.”

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.363

keha bale,—'vyāsa, śuka, nārada, prahlāda
tāṅ-sabāra samayogya e-mata prasāda’

Translation: “Someone said, ’The mercy He has received is comparable to that received by Vyāsadeva, Śukadeva, Nārada, and Prahlāda.’

Commentary: The phrase e-mata prasāda means “such mercy of the Lord.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  Someone said that the mercy He has received is like the mercy received by Vyāsa, Śukadeva Gosvāmī, Nārada Muni and Prahlāda.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.364

sabe meli’ dharilena kariyāśakati
kṣaṇeke tomāra āsi’ bāhya haila mati

Translation: “Then with all their strength they all held You still, and shortly after You regained external consciousness.

Commentary: The second line of the verse indicates that after a short time His external consciousness returned.

Jayapatākā Swami:  Everyone joined together and with all their strength to hold You. After sometime shortly You again achieved Your external consciousness.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.365

tatsambandhe prabhura bahiḥsmṛti-rāhitya-varṇana—

e-saba vṛttānta tumi kichui nā jāna’
āra kathā kahi,—tāhā citta diyāśuna

Translation: “You do not know all these incidents. Now please hear attentively what we have to say.

Jayapatākā Swami:  We don’t know how this happened; we will tell you more. Please listen to us, what we have to say.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.366

daśadina yāvat prabhura kṛṣṇapara vyākhyāna-phale chātragaṇera adhyayana-varjana-jñāpana

dina daśa dhari’ kara’ yateka vyākhyāna
sarva-śāstre-śabde—kṛṣṇa-bhakti kṛṣṇa-nāma

Translation: “Since the past ten days You have explained that devotional service to Kṛṣṇa and the holy name of Kṛṣṇa is the meaning of every word of every śāstra.

Jayapatākā Swami:  For the past ten days You have explained that devotional service to Kṛṣṇa and the holy name of Kṛṣṇa is the meaning of every word in every śāstra.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.367

daśa dina dhari’ āji pāṭha-vāda haya
kahite tomāre sabe vāsi baḍa bhaya

Translation: “For the last ten days our studies have been held up, and we were afraid to inform You of this.

Commentary: The phrase pāṭha-vāda means “a cessation, stoppage, or rejection of teaching and learning.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  So for the past ten days, till today, our studies have been held up. We were afraid to tell You of this.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.368

śabdārthavit prabhura kṛṣṇapara vyākhyāna-kāle sakalei vismaye niruttara–

śabdera aśeṣa artha—tomāra gocara
ye vākhāna’ hāsi’ tāhā ke dibe uttara?”

Translation: “You know the unlimited meanings of every word. Who has the power to contradict even Your light-hearted comments?”

Commentary: The first line of this verse is explained as follows: “You alone are the greatest and most expert in linguistic literature. You are the most experienced person to explain the meanings of words through various brief explanations under the categories of yoga, rūḍhi, yoga-rūḍhi, gauṇī, mukhyā, laksaṇā, and abhidhā.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  You know the unlimited meaning of every word everything is new knowledge. Even the explanations You give lightheartedly, who is there who can contradict? The meaning You explained that Nimāi Paṇḍita You are alone expert in linguistic literature, You are the most experienced person in explaining the meaning of the words through various brief explanations under the categories of yoga, rūḍhi, yoga-rūḍhi, gauṇī, mukhyā, laksaṇā, and abhidhā. Viśvambhara was very expert in explaining the meaning of words.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.369

adhyayana-varjana-śravaṇe prabhura chātragaṇake mṛdyu bhatrsana

prabhu bale,—“daśa dina pāṭha vāda yāya!
tabe ta’ āmāre sabe kahite yuyāya?”

Translation: The Lord said, “Your studies have been held up for ten days! Shouldn’t you have informed Me of this?”

Commentary: The second line of this verse means “in such a situation wasn’t it proper to inform Me of this matter (regarding the cessation of studies)?”

Jayapatākā Swami:  The Lord said ten days of your studies were held up, so why didn’t you tell Me? I should have been informed of this.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.370

chātragaṇera prabhukṛta kṛṣṇapara-vyākhyāra yāthārthya-varṇana—

paḍuyā-sakala bale,—“vākhāna ucita
satya ’kṛṣṇa’—sakala śāstrera samīhita

Translation: The students replied, “Your explanations were correct. The purport of all scriptures is that Kṛṣṇa is the Absolute Truth.

Jayapatākā Swami:  The students all replied, “Your explanation is correct. It is true that Kṛṣṇa is the Absolute Truth and He is the purport of all the scriptures, He knew this.”

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.371-372

nija-durdaiva-vaśei āpanāra kṛta kṛṣṇapara-vyākhyāya āmādera amanoyoga

adhyayana ei se—sakala-śāstra-sāra
tabe ye nā lai’—doṣa āmā sabākāra

mūle ye vākhāna’ tumi, jñātavya se-i se
tāhāte nā laya citta nija-karma-doṣe”

Translation: “This is real study and the essence of all scriptures, and it is our fault if we do not accept it. Whatever You have explained is fundamental truth and the only knowledge worthy of the name. It is due to our own misdeeds that we do not accept it.”

Commentary: “Although the only aim, intention, and purport of all scriptures is to understand Kṛṣṇa, due to our own offenses we do not accept Your scriptural explanations based on Kṛṣṇa. Actually our only goal is to realize the meaning of words in the way You explain and have explained, but due to the fault of misfortune our minds are incapable of grasping the true purport of the essence of all scriptures as explained by You.”

Jayapatākā Swami:  This is real study. This is the essence of all scriptures. Who does not accept this, it is our fault, if we do not accept this.

“What You have explained is the fundamental truth and the only knowledge is the holy name. This is just due to our own karma, our misdeeds, but we do not accept it. The aim of the purport of all the scriptures is to understand Kṛṣṇa. Due to our own offences we do not accept Your scriptural explanations based on Kṛṣṇa. Actually our only goal is to realize the meaning of the words as You explained, but due to our faults or misdeeds, it is the misfortune of our mind that we are not able to grasp the true purports of the essence of all the scriptures as explained by You,” said the students.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.373

chātragaṇera dainyavākye prabhura santoṣa o kṛpapākti—

paḍuyāra vākye tuṣṭa hailāṭhākura
kahite lāgilā kṛpā kariyā pracura

Translation: The Lord was pleased on hearing the students’ words. Out of compassion, He began to speak as follows.

Jayapatākā Swami:  The Lord was very happy, very pleased, hearing the words of the students. Out of great compassion, He began to speak as follows.
