24 Nov 2018|English|Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book|Transcription|Chennai, India

Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book work 24th November 2018 in Chennai, India by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Guru Mahārāja.

Under the section: Madhya-līlā Begins

* * *

Jayapatākā Swami: So we continue with the compilation of the Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book and yesterday we had the Rāsa-pūrṇimā and we broke our fast from Bhīṣma-pañcaka and the cātur-māsa is completed and now we are back to our regular diet!

Lord Caitanya, He would stay in different places during the monsoon season. One time He stayed at Śrī Raṅgam for four days and He took prasāda with the head priest and his son Gopāla Bhaṭṭa was eager to serve Him. So eventually Gopāla Bhaṭṭa was sent to Vṛndāvana and he became one of the Six Gosvāmīs. So Lord Caitanya left Navadvīpa as Nimāi Paṇḍita. He went to perform the rituals for His deceased father at Gayā.

But there He met Īśvara Purī. He took initiation and He started to manifest kṛṣṇa-bhakti. He saw the lotus footprint of Viṣṇu in Gayā and He was overwhelmed with the ecstasy of love of Kṛṣṇa. He cried, His hairs stood on end, so many things. So then, He went back to Navadvīpa and on the way He stopped at Kanāi Nāṭaśālā, which is now under ISKCON, and there He saw Kṛṣṇa. In fact Kṛṣṇa embraced Him and then He ran away.

So Lord Caitanya since that time had been mad in separation from Kṛṣṇa. So when He came back to Navadvīpa, He was not the same person. He was not recognized by the people. His character had changed. Now He was Kṛṣṇa conscious. So we read this history in Caitanya-Bhāgavata. Now we will read the history as given in Caitanya maṅgala.

Today I resumed by physiotherapy and after that I attended the EIDC through internet, that is Eastern India Divisional Council. They are meeting in Purī. Now we hand over the mike to Deva Gaurāṅga dāsa.

Śrī Caitanya-maṅgala, Madhya 1.7

Jayapatākā Swami: So the Lord, He came back to Nadia. His consciousness was very blissful. He had a happy heart and stayed with His friends and relatives.

Śrī Caitanya-maṅgala, Madhya 1.8

navadvīpavāsī yata brāhmaṇa-kumāra
satkuladbhava tārā ati śuddhācāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Navadvīpa residents who were the sons of brāhmaṇas, they were very pure in their activities. They were coming from very pure families. They were very fortunate. They were the most fortunate in the three worlds. The Lord Himself, Viśvambhara gave instructions to these boys in the form of transcendental knowledge.

Jayapatākā Swami: After the Lord performed His bath in the Ganges, as soon as the Lord returned, His students came and were assembled there. The Lord Gaurasundara, He was engaged in the loving service of Kṛṣṇa in the mood of separation and He did not explain anything other than Kṛṣṇa. But His students could not at all understand the current condition of their teacher Nimāi Paṇḍita.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.143

TRANSLATION: The Lord did not explain anything other than Kṛṣṇa, so the students could not understand anything.

COMMENTARY: The Lord, who was engaged in the loving service of Kṛṣṇa in the mood of separation, did not explain any word apart from Kṛṣṇa, but His students could not at all understand the current condition of their teacher, Nimāi Paṇḍita.

Jayapatākā Swami: So other than Kṛṣṇa, the Lord didn’t explain… no other sound came from the Lord’s mouth. The students could not understand anything.

Jayapatākā Swami: His students opened their books by chanting the name of Hari. When Śacīnandana, son of mother Śacī, heard this, He was greatly pleased.

TRANSLATION: On hearing the name of Hari, the Lord lost all external consciousness. Then the jewel of the twice-born cast His merciful glance on everyone there.

Jayapatākā Swami: When the Lord heard the chanting of the name of Lord Hari, He lost His external consciousness. He gave His auspicious glance to all the students. The Jewel of the twice born, gave His auspicious glance to all His students.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.147

nitya-śuddha-pūrṇa-mukta cinmayī parama-mukhyā vidvadraḍhi-vṛttite prabhura vyākhyānārambha

āviṣṭa haiyā prabhu karena vyākhyāna
sūtra-vṛtti-ṭīkāya, sakala hari-nāma

TRANSLATION: Being fully absorbed in Kṛṣṇa, the Lord explained the names of Hari in all the sūtras, aphorisms, and commentaries.

COMMENTARY: As a teacher fully absorbed in love of Kṛṣṇa, Nimāi explained in the course of teaching that the name of Hari was the only purport of all sūtras, aphorisms, and commentaries. The conventional meaning of every word may be understood from three angles—vidvad-rūḍhi, the conventional meaning according to enlightened persons, sādhāraṇa-rūḍhi, the conventional meaning according to ordinary persons, and ajña-rūḍhi, the conventional meaning according to unenlightened persons. At that time, being induced by ajña-rūḍhi, the mundane teachers of grammar who were attached to sense gratification explained every word as conducive to sense enjoyment. Because of their enjoying propensity, they could not understand that every syllable and word stimulate Kṛṣṇa consciousness and are therefore nondifferent from the Absolute Truth. Gaurasundara explained to His students that one can derive the real meaning of a book by discussing and studying through vidvad-rūḍhi. He further explained that it is totally prohibited to consider that there is a difference between the Supreme Lord Viṣṇu and His transcendental holy name. Whenever one sees a distinction between the Lord and His name it is to be understood that he is compelled by ajña-rūḍhi and bewildered by the illusory energy of the Lord. At that time Viśvambhara had no realization of word meanings other than their being indicative of the transcendental holy names situated in the spiritual sky. From the pure, transcendental vidvad-rūḍhi, every sound unfolding in the spiritual sky of Kṛṣṇa’s service is completely nondifferent from the Lord and His holy names.

Jayapatākā Swami: Being fully absorbed in Kṛṣṇa, Lord Gaurasundara, He explained how in all the sūtras, aphorisms and commentaries names of Hari was present.

It’s a long commentary so I just read. So Nimāi Paṇḍita was fully absorbed in love of Kṛṣṇa and through His teachings He explained that the name of Hari was the only purpose of all the śastras, sūtras, aphorism and commentaries. And the name of Hari could be understood by three angles, vidvad-rūḍhi, conventional meaning according to enlightened souls or enlightened process, that is vidvad-rūḍhi.

The other one is sādhāraṇa-rūḍhi, the conventional meaning according to the ordinary persons and then there is ajña-rūḍhi the mundane teachers of grammar, who are attached to sense gratification and they explain the holy name as the conducive to sense enjoyment. So one should not see any difference between Kṛṣṇa and Viṣṇu and also any difference between Supreme Lord Viṣṇu and His holy names. A person who sees the difference between the person Kṛṣṇa and the name Kṛṣṇa is compelled by the ajña-rūḍhi that means he is bewildered by the material energy or the illusory energy of the Lord. So the holy names are situated in the spiritual world and in the enlightened process of vidvad-rūḍhi, they see every sound of Kṛṣṇa’s name unfolds in the spiritual sky and Kṛṣṇa’s service as completely non-different from the Lord and His holy names.

Otherwise in this material world a person is different from his body. We say my hand, my foot, my head but who is the me? That is the living force in the body. When the living force leaves the body, the body is considered dead. Actually the body is never alive but the presence of the spirit soul puts a spark of life in the body. When the soul leaves the body, the body becomes motionless, starts to decay, eaten by worms or vultures or fire, depending on what they do to the body after death.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.148

prabhu-kartṛka sarvaśāstra-varṇita kṛṣṇera nāma o tattva-mahimā-vyākhyāna

prabhu bale,—“sarva-kāla satya kṛṣṇa-nāma
sarva-śāstre ‘kṛṣṇa’ bai nā balaye āna

TRANSLATION: The Lord said, “The holy names of Kṛṣṇa are the eternal Truth. All scriptures explain Kṛṣṇa and nothing else.

COMMENTARY: The holy names of Kṛṣṇa are not temporary objects subject to creation and annihilation within the jurisdiction of time. Since there is no material difference between the names of Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa Himself, the form of Kṛṣṇa, which is the personified source of time, and His holy names are at all times the undivided Truth. All Vaiṣṇava literatures have no aim other than Kṛṣṇa. As stated in the Hari-vaṁśa:

vede rāmāyaṇe caiva

purāṇe bhārate tathā

ādāv ante ca madhye ca

hariù sarvatra gīyate

“In the Vedic literature, including the Rāmāyaṇa, Purāṇas, and Mahābhārata, from the very beginning (ādau) to the end (ante ca), as well as within the middle (madhye ca), only Hari, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is explained.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So the Lord said, “at all times, holy name of Kṛṣṇa is true, the eternal truth. All scriptures describe name Kṛṣṇa and nothing else”. So it is said, the holy names of Kṛṣṇa are not temporary things, Subject to creation and annihilation within the jurisdiction of time. Since there is no material difference between the names of Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa Himself, the form of Kṛṣṇa which is the personified source of time, His holy names are at all times the undivided truth. All Vaiṣṇava literatures have no aim other than Kṛṣṇa. As stated in Harivaṁśa all the Vedic literatures including Mahābhārata and Rāmāyaṇa and other Purāṇas from the very beginning to the end and also in the middle only Hari, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is described.

Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.149

hartā kartā pālayitā kṛṣṇa se īśvara
aja-bhava-ādi, saba—kṛṣṇera kiṅkara

Translation: “Kṛṣṇa is the supreme controller, the creator, the maintainer, and the annihilator. Everyone beginning from Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva is His servant.

Commentary: Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the cause of all causes. He is the original creator, maintainer, and annihilator of all universes. Wherever Lord Brahmā and Lord Rudra are described as the creator and the annihilator it is to be understood that they are empowered secondary agents under the instructions of Kṛṣṇa, and therefore they are established as predominating deities of the modes of passion and ignorance.

Jayapatākā Swami: Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme controller, the creator, the maintainer and the annihilator. Everyone beginning from Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva is His servant. So Śiva and Brahmā are the topmost in the material world and they are Kṛṣṇa’s or Viṣṇu’s servants. Kṛṣṇa is the original Viṣṇu. He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the cause of all causes. He is the original creator, maintainer and annihilator of all universes, which are unlimited millions of universes. So Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva are empowered secondary agents under the instructions of Lord Kṛṣṇa, Therefore they are established as predominating deities in the mode of passion and ignorance.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya 1.150

kṛṣṇetara-vyākhyākārī kṛṣṇanāma-bhajanahīna vyaktike gahaṇa—

kṛṣṇera caraṇa chāḍi’ ye āra vākhāne
vṛthā janma yāya tāra asatya-vacane

TRANSLATION: “The life of anyone who gives up the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa and explains things as separate from Him is useless as a result of his false statements.

COMMENTARY: Kṛṣṇa alone is the cause of all causes and the original source of everything. Proud, asslike, ignorant people who give up the service of His lotus feet and take shelter of ajña-rūḍhi distort the meaning of the scriptures with superficial explanations. Thus they waste their rarely attained meaningful human form of life. In other words, as stated in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, they are actually jīvan-mṛta (living dead), jīvañ-chava (dead bodies), or śvasan-śava (dead although breathing).

Jayapatākā Swami: Anyone who gives up the shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa and explains things as being separate from Kṛṣṇa, because of his false statements, his life is considered useless due to his false statements. Kṛṣṇa alone is the cause of all causes and the original source of everything. The ācāryas describe about the people who give up the service of the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa as being proud ass-like ignorant people and they distort the meaning of the scriptures with superficial speculations and explanations. They waste their rarely attained human birth.

As they are described in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Mahāpurāṇa as actually jīvan-mṛta, living dead. jīvañ-chava-dead bodies or śvasan-śava-dead although breathing. So this human form of life is meant to get out of this material world which is a prison house and go to the spiritual sky where we actually belong. But people waste their human life by these false statements of Kṛṣṇa’s holy name in person… about the false statements of holy name and Kṛṣṇa. So sense gratification can be received in any of the animal kingdom but knowledge about the Supreme Lord is very rare and only understood by the human beings. So to not take up this opportunity is a very big loss. So, what Lord Caitanya is teaching to His students would be further described.

Since it is also very late. I will end here and will continue tomorrow with the discussion of Lord Viśvambhara’s teachings.

Any questions?

So Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, he gave the purport where he explained how Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam called the people who give up the service of Kṛṣṇa, and explained the things being separate from Hari. He gave three verses from the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, that such people are jīvan-mṛtya living dead, jīvan-śava or dead bodies, or śvāsan-śava, dead although breathing.

I remember how Śrīla Prabhupāda was sitting in the airport, he was going somewhere and people were walking by rushing to get the tickets, boarding passes. So he was saying that all these people are living dead. Because if you don’t serve Kṛṣṇa, we are living to die. If we serve Kṛṣṇa, we die to live. Haribol!
