Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book work 25th November 2018 in Chennai, India by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Guru Mahārāja. Reading from Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.151-154.
Under the section: The Lord's Pastimes with Students after His Gayā Yātrā
* * *
Jayapatākā Swami: So today we are continuing the compilation of the Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book. Lord Caitanya has returned from Gayā, initiated by Īśvara Purī and from Nimāi Paṇḍita He has been completely changed as a pure devotee, the greatest devotee of Kṛṣṇa. So everything He described was in relation to Kṛṣṇa and that is what we are reading now. So I am reviewing all the various scriptures which tell about His pastimes giving the translations and making it complete and the purports.
Today was Sunday so we didn’t have our physiotherapy but I did it with the devotees. About 12 different sets and we had our voice therapist come and he taught a new consonant. First, I learnt the vowels and joint vowels and the first consonant ‘mmmmmmaaaaam’. So he would have me pronounce each consonant and each vowel because for 45 days I was in tracheostomy, and I could not speak. When they closed it up, I was still unable to speak. By voice therapy I am gradually now able to speak. In Purī the Eastern India Divisional Council meeting which my office manager attended for me and sent me different proposals and discussions which we tried to vote and then we had a visit from a disciple couple from Dāmodaradeśa in the Middle East. They are moving tomorrow to Māyāpur so I spoke to them. Then they had me go down and see a new car whether I want it or not. Finally, Muralīdhara Govinda has arrived from Dallas. Sarvajaya Mādhava dāsa and his family sponsored a Samsung 9 mobile phone. I am giving my Samsung 8 as prasāda. So that pretty much sums up my... So now we will go thru this Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.151
āgama-vedānta-ādi yata daraśana
sarva-śāstre kahe ’kṛṣṇa-pade bhakti-dhana’
Translation: “The philosophies in all scriptures headed by the āgamas and Vedānta describe the wealth of devotion to the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa.
Commentary: The āgamas, or Pañcarātras, which are expansions of the Vedas; the Upaniṣads, which are the head of the Vedas; and Vedānta, which is the essence of the Upaniṣads; as well as various philosophical scriptures all point out that service to the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa is the goal of life.
Jayapatākā Swami: So the different philosophies of the Vedas or Vedic scriptures starting from the āgamas and the Vedānta-sūtra including all other bona fide Vedic literatures and scriptures, whatever philosophy they are containing, all of these scriptures say that, “the wealth is pure devotion for the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa.” So various scriptures or Vedas, Pañcarātras, Vedas, the Upaniṣads, and the Vedānta which is the essence of all the Upaniṣads as well as the various philosophical scriptures, all point out that service to the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa is the goal of life.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.152
mugdha saba adhyāpaka kṛṣṇera māyāya
chāḍiyā kṛṣṇera bhakti anya pathe yāya
Translation: “Teachers bewildered by the illusory energy of Kṛṣṇa give up the devotional service of Kṛṣṇa and take to other paths.
Jayapatākā Swami: The teachers and professors are bewildered by Kṛṣṇa’s illusory energy. They get illusioned and give up the devotion to Lord Kṛṣṇa and take to other paths. So the material energy is very powerful. It’s an illusion created by Lord Kṛṣṇa. So this material world appears real because it is one of the energies of the Lord but it’s temporary. Its form is temporary so it is always changing, and person gets disease, old age and finally dies and then they take rebirth, soul goes with the subtle body of the mind, intelligence and the false ego and takes birth again. So Kṛṣṇa, devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa can free one from this cycle of birth and death. But the illusory energy of the material world bewilders such people, and these people leave the devotional service to Kṛṣṇa and take the other paths.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.153
karuṇā-sāgara kṛṣṇa jagat-jīvana
sevaka-vatsala nanda-gopera nandana
Translation: “Lord Kṛṣṇa is the ocean of mercy, the life and soul of the universe, the lover of His servants, and the darling son of the cowherd Nanda.
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Kṛṣṇa is the ocean of mercy. He is the life and soul of the universes. He is very affectionate to His devotees. He is the son of the cowherd Nanda Mahārāja, a darling son of cowherd Nanda Mahārāja.
Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, Madhya 1.154
hena kṛṣṇa-nāme yāra nāhi rati-mati
paḍiyā o sarva-śāstra, tāhāra durgati
Translation: “Even if one studies all the scriptures, if he has no affection or inclination for the name of Kṛṣṇa, he is certainly degraded.
Commentary: By giving up vidvad-rūḍhi and accepting ajña-rūḍhi, a learned scholar, in spite of having studied all the scriptures, does not develop any taste for the transcendental names of Kṛṣṇa. Such a proud, self-proclaimed scholar is simply an unfortunate asslike traveler to hell rather than a swanlike person.
Jayapatākā Swami: Even if one studies all the scriptures, if he does not have any devotion or inclination to chanting Kṛṣṇa’s holy names he is downgraded or he achieves a durgati - inauspicious destination. So previously we discussed that there are three ways of understanding scriptures. In the vidvad-rūḍhi is that one hears from the authorities. If one gives up the vidvad-rūḍhi and accepts the ajña-rūḍhi which is the ways of someone who is [not clear -17:45] of the actual position of Kṛṣṇa… he gives up the service of Kṛṣṇa by listening to someone who is not having any knowledge or faith in the position of Kṛṣṇa. So, someone in this position even though he is a learned scholar, even though he has studied all the scriptures, if he does not develop any taste for the transcendental names of Kṛṣṇa, such a proud self-proclaimed scholar is simply an unfortunate, foolish traveler to hell rather than a swan like person.
Śrī Caitanya-maṅgala, Madhya 1.10
saba śiṣyagaṇe ekadina gaurahari
balila sabhāre prabhu anugraha kari
Jayapatākā Swami: So Viśvambhara, Nimāi Paṇḍita tells His students, “The one thing that you should study as the eternal truth is worshipping the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa. That knowledge has the symptom of devotion for Lord Kṛṣṇa.”
Śrī Caitanya-maṅgala, Madhya 1.12
tāhā vinu avidyā sakala śāstre kahe
rādhā-kṛṣṇa-bhakti vine kehe saṅgī nahe
Jayapatākā Swami: “Do not My dear students, do not study any other truth, the śāstras declare or describe. Any truth other than devotion to Śrī Śrī Rādhā Kṛṣṇa.” So Nimāi Paṇḍita who had the cream of all the sons of brāhmaṇas as His students without telling them that they should simply study the devotion to Śrī Śrī Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. That is something new for the students. They never heard Lord Caitanya or Nimāi Paṇḍita speak like that before.
Śrī Caitanya-maṅgala, Madhya 1.13
vidyā-kula-dhanamade kṛṣṇa nāhi pāya
bhaktite se anāyāse pāi yadurāya
Jayapatākā Swami: Persons who are intoxicated by their knowledge, their learning, by their honorable families, by their wealth, they do not attain Lord Kṛṣṇa. Only by devotional service can one easily achieve the lotus feet of the King of the Yadus... Lord Kṛṣṇa, the King of the Yadus.
Śrī Caitanya-maṅgala, Madhya 1.14
bhakti rase vaśa kṛṣṇa dekhaha vicāri
eta kahi śloka paḍhe śāstra-anusāri
Jayapatākā Swami: “My Lord Kṛṣṇa is conquered by the nectar of devotional service. See this, consider this and judge yourself. To prove this point, I quote these words from various scriptures.”
Śrī Caitanya-maṅgala, Madhya 1.15
tathāhi—
(padyāvalyāṁ dhṛtaṁ dākṣiṇātyakavivākyam)
vyādhasyācaraṇaṃ dhruvasya ca vayo vidyā gajendrasya kā
kubjāyāḥ kimu nāma rūpamadhikaṁ kiṁ tat sudāmno dhanam
vaṁśaḥ ko vidurasya yādavapaterugrasya kiṁ pauruṣaṁ
bhaktyā tuṣyati kevalaṁ na ca guṇair bhaktipriyo mādhavaḥ
Bangla anuvāda: Vyādhera ki ācāra chila, dhruverai vā vayasa kata chila, vidurera ki vaṁśamaryādā chila, yadupati ugrasenerai vā ki pauruṣa chila, kubjāra ki adhika rūpa chila. evaṁ sudāmā viprera vā kata dhana chila? ataeva bhaktipriya mādhava kevala bhakti dvārāi tuṣṭa hana, asaṁkhyaguṇe tuṣṭa nahena.
Translation: “Where was the hunter Dharma’s piety, Dhruva’s maturity and Gajendra’s knowledge? Where was Kubjā’s beauty? Where was Sudāma’s wealth? Where was Vidura’s noble birth? Where was Ugrasena’s chivalrous strength? Lord Mādhava is pleased only by devotional service and not by material qualifications.”
Śrī Caitanya-maṅgala, Madhya 1.16
eimate śiṣyagaṇe paḍāya ṭhākura
prakāśiba nijaprema ānanda pracura
Jayapatākā Swami: So in this way the Lord taught His disciples, His students, the Lord manifested His ecstatic spiritual love and the unlimited bliss that He felt.
So that’s a section finished. Are there any questions?
