Purport
It is confirmed in the Hari-vaṁśa that Śrī Kṛṣṇa picked up the Govardhana Mountain with His left hand: sa dhṛtaḥ saṅgato meghair giriḥ savyena pāṇinā. “With His left hand He picked up that mountain, which was touching the clouds.” According to Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura, when Lord Kṛṣṇa was preparing to lift Govardhana Hill, a partial expansion of His Yoga-māyā potency named Saṁhārikī temporarily removed all the rain from the sky so that as He ran very swiftly from the porch of His house to the mountain, neither His turban nor other garments became wet.
Convenient!

Thus ends Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Tenth Canto, 25th Chapter, Text 19  Kṛṣṇa Lifts Govardhana Hill by disciples of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedānta Swāmi

Prabhupāda.Srila Prabhupāda ki ….Jaya!
Prabhupāda disciples ki…. Jaya!!

So then, I was reading the class which Prabhupāda gave in 1966 in New York, and it's interesting, he gave a very, because at that time of course no body even heard about Govardhana. So he had to explain it in great detail everything about the ceremony, but here we have all heard - most of you probably many times about Govardhana and all of that time. But here Prabhupāda brings up the point is that when  Kṛṣṇa was on earth, it's not that everybody understood He was God, Prabhupāda said may be out of the whole population, say a hundred or two hundred men knew that He was Supreme Personality of Godhead. Otherwise everyone thought He is an ordinary man like one of us but most powerful. So it was like some kind of superman, superhero but not God. Who thought He was God is few people. Hundreds not thousands. Even the demigods in other planets they thought He is a foolish person , they are thinking of a cowherd boy as God, Ha ha ha! Even Indra - Prabhupāda said - he dramatised it, he was so powerful - he thought “What God has come, My God - He cannot come on this earth. This was some speculation”. Even Brahma also speculated, but  Kṛṣṇa wanted to show Indra, “Yes, actually I have come”, so that Prabhupāda said the incidence is today Govardhan Pūja ki…. Jaya!

It is interesting because I met this one man in the airport somewhere, he told me “Oh! You guys believe in God?”

I said, “Yes - We believe in God, same God you believe in, there is only one God.”

“No, but you people say that God came to earth, God cannot come to earth. So you believe in some other God”.

I said, “God is so powerful.”

 “Yes, of course.”

“So, if He is so powerful, why - who is going to prohibit Him from coming to earth if He wants to come here?” He is scratching.

Most people, they put God in such a high position that, you know, they just speculate something like He is just stuck there in the sky, you know, something up there, some impressive conception. But actually the Lord came down, so even the demigods after so many millions and billions and so many yugas, finally the Lord comes down and He is acting like a cowherd boy, playing leapfrog and hide and seek. What kind of God is He? Millions of kids are playing these games all along. Someway one kid is playing the game and He claims, so He is God! So, some speculation, that's the problem. This was some speculation, God cannot - He cannot come. Even Indra thought that God can’t come. God can create the universe but He can't play leapfrog.

And Prabhupāda, he explains about satisfying the devas - deva-yajan, how we should worship the devas . It is interesting he is talking about how Nanda Mahārāja, was very wealthy. Now we measure wealth by how many millions and billions of dollars and euros and  pounds we have. Prabhupāda said in those days, in the days of yore, there was no banks, no bank balance, you are rich according to how much land you have, how much rice you have, how many cows you have. If you have cows and grains then you can survive.

Prabhupāda always told us that we should be ready in case, if there is some disaster and modern society breaks-down. You heard that, ever heard that? Anybody heard about that? How many of you think that that’s a possibility?

[Devotees answer : not clear 10:50]

It could break down. How many think it is a very distant possibility? Not very likely. Nobody is [Not clear 11:03] to raise their hand. Because I just visited Mississippi, where the Katrina hurricane hit. Talking about, you know, Indra dropping the cloud, rain, well this hurricane is one of Indra’s special clouds. I don't know, those are the kind of clouds he used against Vraja Dhāma. But the economy of the New Tālavan farm is - they have cows, they have food grains, they have six hundred hectares of land, may be thirteen hundred acres, and lot of people there go to work in New Orleans which is a hour drive away, and also when you read the papers, New Orleans was fully wiped  - you know, flooded. They evacuated the entire city. It was  illegal to remain in the city. Even the deities were evacuated , They were in Dallas - being worshipped. I went to see Them there, They were very nicely worshipped there, devotees made a nice arrangement for Them. When I went to see the devotees in New Tālavan we never used to go discussing.

So they said, “Well, we always heard Prabhupāda said we should be prepared that there could be a breakdown. We never did it, even though we have so much land and even, we didn't prepare. [Not clear 12:44]New Orleans which is the nearest city, there was thoroughly no electricity, no lights, water above your head, it was totally stopped - evacuated. Whatever Prabhupāda said that here we realised it happened. And in that area all the cities nearby Gulfport, Biloxi -  whatever little cities they have there - towns, they were wiped out. I drove along the beachfront. And one of my disciples is a Police officer, so he got into the restricted area, right on the beach where the hurricane hit, about four five hundred meters, nothing - flat. There were huge trucks throughout - on top of trees and houses. That's amazing, it's just like, I can’t explain it, inexplicable, even you see the pictures when you are right there, it's just like, it's just amazing what it did - the storm. Completely wiped out everything within a - so much area.

So, now the devotees, they take it - they really have to,  what happened is they didn’t have gas. How to cook without gas? It’s very impossible to cook without gas, right? You cannot survive without propane gas. That’s like you know,  little things like that they never figured out that to cook with wood, like here we have got tons and tons of wood, we don't have gas, but in America nobody uses wood to cook anymore. They use gas and electricity. No electricity, no gas. People got shocked to get gasoline, to get petrol. Well, so now they are going to - they need someone to go there and setup chūlas. Stoves, ovens for cooking with wood. So whenever there is - something like this happens again, we will be prepared. But we take for granted because we always have power. There were states who have  lack of electricity, electricity failure in India? They have never experienced such things in the West sometimes. So when suddenly it happens they don't know what to do.

Since - I mean, in the previous times - Nanda Mahārāja, Prabhupāda, said he belonged to the vaiśya community, he was a well to do man, very rich man. He had 900,000 cows, nine hundred thousands of cows. 900,000 cows he was protecting. Formerly according to vedic civilization a man was considered to be a rich man in proportion to his stock of grains and livestock cows. We do the wedding ceremony, there’s one ceremony called sapta pathi, they take seven steps, one of the steps - each step is a blessing. May you be blessed to do the seven sacrifices - the last one, you will be strong in your vows, you will be strong, you will be successful, one of them says will you have many cows. Another one says many kids. Lots of kids, lots of cows, that was the sign of wealth in the previous time. Lots of grains. Prabhupāda said not the bank balance, there was no bank, no paper money. He possessed foodstuff enough. People had - devotees [Not c;ear 17:08].in New Orleans - they had some money, they went to the grocery store, the grocery store was abandoned. The store owner and all the employees had left to escape the flood and the hurricane. So they can’t buy the food and then the policeman said, ‘Go take.’ Opened the door, and said, “ You can take whatever you want, you don't have to pay for it, it's alright, it's a survival.” Then the last [Not cear 17:42] is groceries to the people taking on so many things. The devotees took water and they did not pay. But there was no electricity and no gas.

So they couldn't cook anything. They didn't have wood. So there was - whatever Prabhupāda had predicted the devotees personally realised. So this - everything broke down. All the normal facilities broke down. So here Prabhupāda, he was saying that, if you got sufficient milk and grains you can make nice nutritious, full of vitamin value preparations with the grains. No question of starvation, if you got grains and cows. This was the standard of economic solution in days of yore - of days yore.

Anyway, they were preparing to satisfy Indra Krsa Balarama came and discussed,

tad-abhijño ’pi bhagavān

sarvātmā sarva-darśanaḥ

praśrayāvanato ’pṛcchad

vṛddhān nanda-purogamān

[Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.24.2]

So  Kṛṣṇa started to ask - although He knew everything, He knew all the things that are going, He is my son -  He is coming and asking questions. So He is saying, “Dear Father, I am very respectfully and humbly I am enquiring. What is this arrangement you are doing? Why you are busy making some sacrificial ceremony? What is the reason, what is the result? Kim phalam? Kim phalam? What is the result of doing this ?

kiṁ phalaṁ kasya voddeśaḥ [SB 10.24.3]

Who are you trying to satisfy?

kena vā sādhyate

What is the purpose of the sacrifice? So I cannot understand it. Will you kindly explain to me? I am very much anxious

etad brūhi mahān kāmo

mahyaṁ śuśrūṣave pitaḥ

 [SB 10.24.4]

For I am your most obedient son. So kindly explain to me. So , maybe this is very confidential but sādhus or saintly people, they keep no secret. So you can  tell me. What is the reason you are doing all this ceremony?”

Then Prabhupāda goes and explains how Lord Caitanya said [verse - coil not find]

One should teach others the principles of religion by his own example - his or her own example. “So there is no secret you should keep from me Father, Nanda Mahārāja.  I am your son. Please tell Me why you are doing this ceremony. What is your purpose? Is this some superstition or something religious ritual? Or does it have some actual effect?”

And Prabhupada he was describing how  Kṛṣṇa - He is presenting the point that we shouldn’t do anything out of superstition. That there’s a lot of religions in the world which are doing the rituals - but there is no spiritual result. No change in their habits or their life. In vedic religion there were different yajnas but there would be results. Putreshti -yajna to get a child. You do the yajna, you get a child. So there will be all kinds of yajnas to get different effects. No religious ritual should be performed without a practical effect. Prabhupāda said that people became atheists because there is so many rituals in all the religions. Not only Hindu, but Christian, Buddhists, Muslims and so many religions. But there is some formality. Prabhupāda said there is no effect, there is no effect. That such sort rituals, religious ceremonies, not recommended by  Kṛṣṇa. There must be some effect.

Prabhupāda gives the example that Lord Caitanya was talking with Chand Kazi and there were complaints, there were daily reports that the kīrtan is disturbing people. Lord Caitanya started the sankīrtan movement that if you chant

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare

All your desires will be fulfilled. Everything you  want, everything you need in life will be fulfilled. So Prabhupāda said the priestly class, they thought that if people take to this process, nobody  would come to us and ask to do the rituals. We won't get any money. So this is dangerous. He is just telling everybody we don't need organised religion. They don't need even a priest. They can just chant

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare

And everyone is going to become happy. We got to stop this. We have to stop it. Or we’ll be finished. So they went to the Kazi and complained. He is not Hindu religion. He must be stopped. Then  Lord Caitanya, then He broke the wand and He broke the drums. Then Lord Caitanya, He took  Civil Disobedience movement. And hundreds and thousands of people marched on the Kazi. Now there are so many demonstrations going on all over the world, over the - ecology, over the environment, over  the - so many things. Very common now, right? Demonstrations. So Lord Caitanya is the beginner of demonstrations. First - but He had the right reason, that is different. Civil Disobedience was first started by Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Every Civil Disobedience march should have a picture of Lord Caitanya - the founder of Civil Disobedience. So then Lord Caitanya, He went to talk to Chand Kazi and said, “Why  you are killing your mother and father? What kind of religion you follow?”

“What do you mean by killing our mother and father? We don't kill our mother and father.”

“No, you are. The cow gives you milk. You cook them out. You drink it. So she is your mother. You are killing her.”

“You Hindus also have cow sacrifice.”

Then Lord Caitanya  explained,” No but that’s not actually killing the cow. That used to be that by taking the mantra the old cow would be given a new life.”

But nowadays the brāhmanas aren’t so powerful to do that ceremony. Cow sacrifice is forbidden. So something is not practical, it is forbidden. If you get the result by some spiritual religious ritual, then Prabhupāda said it is very good. Otherwise it is superstition. So Lord Caitanya’s point was that because all the vedic injunctions - sacrifices are not possibly performed in this age. So it is very difficult. There is no expert leader to perform all these sacrifices and ceremonies and rituals. Therefore there is no need of the rituals. We should take to chanting

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare

So Prabhupāda, he really went into this point, he said,

viduṣaḥ karma-siddhiḥ syād

yathā nāviduṣo bhavet

One who is intelligent he should know by this sacrifice, I must get the result. [SB 10.24.6]

viduṣaḥ karma-siddhiḥ syād

yathā nāviduṣo bhavet

So those who are fools by simply by superstition they go on doing it. So we get the communists say the religion [Not Clear 28:36] of the people. They don't know, of course,  that there is some religion that gives results. There is  a sanātana dharma, a religion that always gives results. So what was very interesting is that religion is eternal. So Lord Caitanya- Prabhupāda is saying here,  Kṛṣṇa is here now recommending we shouldn’t do something under superstition. Otherwise it is dogmatism - fanaticism. Also Prabhupāda said, ‘Well, why should I chant Hare  Kṛṣṇa. I am a Chritian, I am a Jew.’ Lot of Jews were coming to ISKCON in those days. This is fanaticism. I you are finding any ecstasy by chanting Hare  Kṛṣṇa why you shouldn’t chant? Why you shouldn't?

No, I am Jew. I am Christian, I am Mohammedan. What is a transcendental vibration from the spiritual platform? This Mohammedism, Christianism, Hinduism, Buddhism, this is skin disease. Because you got some particular body or particular circumstances therefore you claim like that. But actually we are all spirit soul. And this sound vibration is from the spirit soul. So what appealed to everyone. See the effect. Don't be sectarian. Don't be fanatic.  Kṛṣṇa warns that simply by custom one should not follow the rituals. One should see the effect. So Prabhupāda, he kind of used all this - interesting how he used the Govardhan līla to present these points. That’s how  Kṛṣṇa was doing.

“Why are you doing all this, Father? What is the result? What is the purpose?.Is this some superstition or some custom? Are there any results for doing all these things? “

So the father, he could understand that my son, He is asking all these questions because He wants to stop me from doing this. Just that  Kṛṣṇa  is very intelligent and Prabhupāda says like father like son. So father is also intelligent. He can figure out why He is asking all these questions. He wants to stop me from all these sacrifice. So he is presenting why he should go on. This has been done from generation after generation. Then Indra provides us the rain, if we don't - we need the rain for our foodgrains. Then Prabhupāda in his explanation he said, like we have to pay the departmental tax, we pay to Con Edison bills to the supplier of electricity and gas. Must be the electric company from NewYork. I don't know, I am not from New York. Con Edison. That is the name that Prabhupāda was referring to the electric company - the utility. We have no program to pay the bills of the sun who is supplying us so much light. What is that? So we have to pay bill for your telephone, your gas, your light, what about for the sun, what about for the rain? So that seems a supporting  - Indra pūja is reasonable. He is providing us something. That's what the whole point - of course this goes on and  Kṛṣṇa  convinces the  - His father better we worship Govardhana and the cows and the  brāhmaṇas. And He says some pretty harsh things about Indra - i would say, indirectly. Indra gets angry with these people, why they are stopping my pūja? So then he makes all the tropical storm, rain, hurricane, whatever it was, crashing down on everyone. So now  Kṛṣṇa lifts up Govardhana Hill and lifting up the Govardhana hill, He provides shelter to everyone.  Kṛṣṇa  tells, “Don't fear that the mountain would fall from My hand. Don't be afraid of the wind and the rain. For your deliverance from all these afflictions has been arranged.” So their minds were pacified by  Kṛṣṇa. They all entered beneath the hill, where they found enough room for themselves and all their cows, wagons, servants, priests and for all the members of the community. So everybody - the dogs, the cows, buffalo - all went under the hill. So   Kṛṣṇa for seven days stood holding the hill. When Indra saw this exhibition of  Kṛṣṇa’s mystical power, he became astonished. He got pulled down from his platform of false pride and his intentions thwarted. He ordered his clouds to desist. The fierce wind, the clouds cleared. The sun had risen. Then   Kṛṣṇa told everyone, “My dear cowherd men, please go out with your wives children, possessions. Give up your fear. The wind and rain had stopped. Now the rivers’ high waters have subsided.” So they all went out from the  - underneath the Govardhana. And then with everybody looking on  Kṛṣṇa put back  Govardhana in its original place just as it stood before.

taṁ prema-vegān nirbhṛtā vrajaukaso

yathā samīyuḥ parirambhaṇādibhiḥ

gopyaś ca sa-sneham apūjayan mudā

dadhy-akṣatādbhir yuyujuḥ sad-āśiṣaḥ

All the residents of Vṛndāvana were overwhelmed with ecstatic love, and they came forward and greeted Śrī Kṛṣṇa according to their individual relationships with Him — some embracing Him, others bowing down to Him, and so forth. The cowherd women presented water mixed with yogurt and unbroken barleycorns as a token of honor, and they showered auspicious benedictions upon Him. [SB 10.25.29]

Mother Yaśodā, Rohiṇī, Nanda Mahārāja and Balarāma, the greatest of the strong, all embraced Kṛṣṇa. Overwhelmed with affection, they offered Him their blessings.

Some equals were laughing with  Kṛṣṇa, joking with him. So we know that the cowherd boys, they thought that they were holding with their sticks. They thought that they were helping  Kṛṣṇa - so they thought that. Because they were helping   Kṛṣṇa to do it. They are always fixed in this. Everyone has a relationship with - the friends who are equal age think that  they are equal age with  Kṛṣṇa, the younger ones are more subservient - they are massaging  Kṛṣṇa’s legs, or bowing down, very respectful friends - more - the cowherd boys they think that - whatever they told when  Kṛṣṇa, He  was holding up the mountain,

“Listen, you can hand it over to Śrīdhāma for a while. Must be getting tired holding up your hand for so long. We can massage your arms. Otherwise switch hands, we can massage your hand.”

They don't see  Kṛṣṇa  as superior to themselves. They had this friendship mood with Him. Even though they are in Vrindavana, they don't think that  Kṛṣṇa  is God, they just think that He is our friend. So today, of course the Govardhana, they offered so many offerings to Govardhana, but since the Govardhana hill took a big form and he was eating so many offerings in our - so today we offer mountain of rice. They told me that they are going to cook over a ton of rice which with all the water and things after it is cooked it must be around five tons, right? I don't know, nobody ever - I never calculated once- uncooked rice when you cook how much more weight it assumes? When you cook how much water you put in?

Devotee: Double.

GuruMahārāja: Double? So then it will be three times as much. So it will be about three tons of rice here with halwa and other things for distributing, so you will see how big a mountain that is. Devotees are taking prasādam. And this was the day, many years ago on the Govardhana Pūja day, we fed so many people. But there were some people who didn't get and they filled the leaf plates in the back and the kids were fighting with the dogs for the food , and Prabhupada said let us distribute prasādam, so nobody goes hungry within ten miles. This was on Govardhana Pūja day also. So today was official starting of our Food for Life. Many things happened today. Today, many years ago we had - we were attacked. Then on the Govardhan Pūja day we also had a big procession - 25,000 people marched against the injustices that were being done against the devotees at that time. There was one march on Balarāma Pūrnima and another on Govardhana. ISKCON Māyāpur also today is a very historical day. Lots of people come today, we feed them prasādam.

So today is the appearance day of Rasikānanda. He was such a powerful devotee. Even in the presence of his guru, his guru asked him to initiate disciples. Usually the disciples initiate after the guru. But sometimes the guru gives the order the disciple can also initiate. He was given such an order. And his samādhi and his baithak - his sitting place is in the Remuna temple. At Kśira cora Gopinātha. There is a famous story that he was brushing his teeth in the morning and some villagers -  disciples came and said, “Gurudev! There is a yogi flying around in the village.” And he is brushing teeth with neem twig and said, “No, it is not important.”

Then someone came and said, “ Gurudev, he is flying, flying  - swish, swish.”

Then he is brushing his teeth with the neem twig and said, “Not important.”

Then another group came and said,” Gurudev! He is flying.”

“I told you, it is not important. “ He took the neem twig out from his mouth, put it under his  leg and starts flying around the āśrama looking down, “I told you it is not important. If it was important I would have told you long time ago.” Then he landed down again, “Not important.''

That was Rasikānanda - very powerful devotee. So he appeared today. He had a face like a moon. Took his birth to deliver all of us. So he appeared in this holy month of Dāmodara. When he appeared it was solar eclipse. So he came to remove the darkness. His eyebrows like Cupid - all beautiful features. He was granted eighty years of life. Long life. So today Rasikānanda, he appeared, another auspicious thing. .[Not clear 44:57] gurukula students and  devotees who made the Govardhana hill.

In South America, we were banned in Bolivia. For about eight years we were going in all the courts. We finally reached the Supreme Court and they found us that the ban was illegal and that we are bonafide religion. Our secret sign of victory was always  - little finger up  - left hand like Kṛṣṇa holding up Govardhana hill. Victory! New victory sign. Come on, give me the victory sign. [Laughter, Haribol!] Māyāpur Project Development Committee is meeting now in Māyāpur. So today is the second day and also the last day. Most of them will come down to take prasādam with the devotees today. They are trying to do the needful so that the main temple can be built and the city can be developed. There were prayer - they would pray everyday morning for the development. Any questions about the class?

Question:  [Indistinct]

GuruMahārāja: Yeah. Prabhupāda, he explains that vaisṇavas, especially guru- disciple, they don't have secrets. That Prabhupāda makes the point , the sādhu - the saintly people, for them there is no secret, no privacy. Sādhu has no privacy. In ordinary social [Not clear 47:48] there is no difference between the private life and  the public life. In the modern schools, we have a teacher. When he is working, if he were to smoke or get drunk that would be considered very wrong. And he might be fired from his job. But in his “private life” when he is off the job, he may get drunk, he may do so many things. So they say they don't care what he does off his job as long as he is a good teacher doing his work. Prabhupāda raises the point, the vedic conception is that he is not a teacher, if his private life is not very good, he is not a sādhu. That is vedic conception. One must be a teacher according to his own behavior in life.

āpane ācāre prabhu jīvera śikśa

A teacher must demonstrate in his practical life of what he is teaching. That is the meaning of ācārya. Ācārya means teacher, must demonstrate things by applying them in his own life. So, that is why  Kṛṣṇa is  saying, “You can't keep anything private, closer. And even if it is very confidential, I am your son. You can explain it to me. I am your well- wisher.” Some very personal thing , maybe you don't tell everybody. But your son, you will tell. That was the point. Kṛṣṇa  is seven years old and He is like pressing His father, you know,  why you are doing this.

Mahāprasādam. Today is very special fast. The fast - you must fast from fasting .[laughter]. You are not allowed to fast today. You have to eat. Fasting from fasting. Govardhana pūja day, special day of prasād. Thank you all very much. Hare  Kṛṣṇa!
