The following is a class given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami on February 7th 1997 at Moscow, Russia. The class begins with a reading from Śrīmad Bhāgavatam fourth canto chapter six verse forty-six.

His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami:

na vai satāṁ tvac-caraṇārpitātmanāṁ

 bhūteṣu sarveṣv abhipaśyatāṁ tava

bhūtāni cātmany apṛthag-didṛkṣatāṁ

 prāyeṇa roṣo ’bhibhaved yathā paśum

(devotees repeat after His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami reads it out)

Translation:

My dear Lord, devotees who have fully dedicated their lives unto your lotus feet certainly observe your presence as Paramātmā in each and every being, and as such they do not differentiate between one living being and another. Such persons treat all living entities equally. They never become overwhelmed by anger like animals, who can see nothing without differentiation.

Purport by Śrīla Prabhupāda:

When the Supreme Personality of Godhead becomes angry or kills a demon, materially this may appear unfavorable, but spiritually it is a blissful blessing upon him. Therefore, pure devotees do not make any distinction between the Lord’s anger and His blessings. They see both with reference to the Lord’s behavior with others and themselves. A devotee does not find fault with the behavior of the Lord in any circumstances.

His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami: Thus, ends Bhaktivedanta Swami Translation Purport to Text 46 Chapter 6 canto 4 of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, in the matter of Brahmā satisfies Lord Śiva spoken on the 7th day of February 1997, 510 Gaura-abda at the Moscow ISKCON Temple.

Second half of the life of the Lord Brahmā (devotees laugh).

So here Lord Brahmā is offering prayers to Lord Śiva in the original position Lord Śiva is an expansion from Mahā Viṣṇu and he’s known as Sadā Śiva.

Before he enters into the material world He’s known as Sadā Śiva and when He enters in the material world then He becomes Śiva and when He’s connected with Pārvatī Śambhu.

Śiva means auspicious, Śiva’s also one of the names of Vishnu, so here Lord Brahmā although He’s apparently the father of Śiva, he’s accepting Śiva to be much more exalted. We find throughout the Veda’s that the one of the great authorities to explain who Lord Viṣṇu is, is Lord Śiva. It is Lord Śiva who says that he does not give liberation only Vishnu gives liberation therefore he’s known as Mukunda.

So here this verse is very significant considering what just happened. Lord Śiva and his associates had destroyed the sacrificial arena of Dakṣa after Satī had self-immolated herself.

So, someone may say that why did Śiva kill Dakṣa why did he do so many…why did he or His followers create such destruction. Dakṣa has committed a great offence and as result of his repeated offences finally things happened. But when the lord personally does something it brings auspicious results.

Kṛṣṇa liberates a demon and from their present body they get to return to the spiritual atmosphere. In this case after the prayers from Lord Brahmā, Śiva will bring Dakṣa back to life.

So ordinary people cannot do that, also since Dakṣa not only was killed but his head was chopped off and burned, so that's a very difficult situation to bring back to life, but you could read ahead and you will find and hear hear how lord Śiva did it. It reminds how in all the different yuga’s the lord comes and He annihilates miscreants and he protects His devotees,

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ

vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām

dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya

sambhavāmi yuge yuge

When lord Chaitanya was in the womb of mother Śacī the devas came and offered prayers to him, dear lord Gaurāṅga, you are the most merciful of all the incarnations of Kṛṣṇa, and most of the incarnations, and of all the incarnation except lord Kṛṣṇa, you are giving liberation to your devotees. But only in the incarnation of Kṛṣṇa you’d get love of Kṛṣṇa and that very sparingly, but in this incarnation, you are giving freely love for Krsna to everyone, that is very rare.

Matsya, Kurmam Varāha so many incarnations you get the liberation but as lord Chaitanya you are giving love for Krsna to everyone even the fallen souls,

Pāpī-tāpī jata chilo, hari-nāme uddhārilo,

tāra śākṣī jagāi mādhāi

Pāpī-tāpī jata chilo– as many as sinful people as they were, they were all delivered by chanting the holy names,

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare,

Hare Rāma Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare,

so, the Deva’s said we need your mercy, we want your blessings, we don’t want any material blessings, we have enough of that actually in the heavenly planets there’s so much sense gratification, there’s no suffering except little bit, just little problems here and there, one problem is sometimes (a lot of interference noise at the background, inaudible) when the demons attack (inaudible-interference noise)

Śrī Śrī Gaura Nīta Ki!

Jai! (Inaudible- interference noises)

so that’s a problem, the other problem is more serious, because there’s so much material sense gratification we forget to perform your pure devotional service and we think that this material happiness is something real therefore we are forced to suffer so much, we are deprived from your pure love that is the greatest suffering to be deprived of Love of Krsna, so really we want you mercy in this incarnation, oh most magnificent one please have your mercy upon us, we are your devotees the deva’s  from the higher planets, are you going to deliver everyone and not deliver us you please must deliver us too.

Advaita Ācārya who is a combination of Mahā Viṣṇu and Sadā Śiva he prayed for Lord Chaitanya to come, and then Nārada muni also went to the spiritual world to Goloka Vṛndāvan to request lord Chaitanya to come.

There he found Lord Chaitanya in a golden jewel dais… on a platform, a raised platform, and on one side was Rādhārāṇī and all of the Sakhi’s and Gopī’s thousands and thousands and on the other side of there was Rukmiṇī and Satyabama and all the queens of Dwaraka and when he came, they were doing abishekam on Lord Chaitanya, Nārada Muni offered His obeisance and Lord Chaitanya asked what is it, why have you come? He said I want…I’m very concerned that Lord Kṛṣṇa has just left the universe and the four headed Brahmā and there you are urgently needed otherwise people are losing their Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

Please come and give them love for Kṛṣṇa, and Lord Chaitanya he became very enlivened and said I’m going to descent! And told Rādhārāṇī you come also and the other Sakhi’s and Rāṇī’s you all come let’s go, lets flood the whole world for love of Kṛṣṇa!

He said I will personally preach all over Bharat, all over India and flood it but if there’s some people that miss my mercy in a distant land then later, I will send my Senapati bhakta and he will deliver the rest of the lands.

Śrīla Prabhupāda Ki Jay!

Then he told Nārada Muni yo go and tell Balarāma, he also has to come, so then Nārada muni went to Lord Balarāma, and he was with Revatī and Vāruṇī his consorts beautiful white form of Balarāma, he paid his obeisance’s, He said Lord Chaitanya is going to descent in the universe of four headed Brahmā and He wants you to come as Lord Nityānanda so you must quickly go, so then Lord Nityānanda said alright let’s go and Nārada muni was about to leave…Wait! You must also come, Nitāi Gour Sītā Nath premānande Hari Haribol!

So, they all descended, the difference is that in this descent Lord Chaitanya He’s not taking any weapon, no weapons of violence, but weapons of love, Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, the Bhagavad Gītā, the Mrdanga with Kartal, His personal beauty, things to kill the demoniac nature of the human being but not to kill the human.

So Lord Chaitanya appeared in the Falguna  full moon and on the 13th day of the rising moon the month of Mādhava, which is the next full moon, that is when Lord Nityānanda Prabhu…not on that full moon but the 13th day, just two days before the full moon that is when lord Nityānanda appears, it’s called a Māghi Pūrṇimā, Māghi Trayodashi, sometimes, like that Lord Nityānanda He appeared then he was traveling all over India from the age of 12 with his…with one sanyasi, then he went to Vrindavan, and when  Lord Nityānanda was in Vrindavan, all the Vraja Vasi’s all the cows and the peacocks became very enlivened and Balarāma is back, the deer’s are coming and licking His lotus feet, the cows are coming and smelling His body, Balarāma was very happy in Vrindavan but then he had a dream He saw that Lord Chaitanya had started the Sankirtan movement, it was time for him to go to Navadwip, so became ready to go, but there was one unfinished business, he went to Govardhan hill, when Kṛṣṇa left the world.

Sridam was very much absorbed in…Sridam Sakhā, the cowherd boy was absorbed in separation and he hid in a cave just there and he never had left the world.

So Nityānanda Prabhu knew that, so he went to that cave and started yelling Sridam Sridam Come out!

Sridam came out and said who’s this?

Who are you?

I’m Balarāma, Balarāma is big, you’re a short guy, (Devotees laugh) because Sridam still had the Dwapara yuga the forms were bigger and now Kali yuga they’re shorter, Nityānanda said Kali Yuga!

I came in this form (devotees laugh) well if you’re really Balarāma, he was the only one who could beat me in a race around Govardhan, on your marks, get set, Go! (devotees laugh) and he started running around Govardhan, Nityānanda took off and raced with him, and they’re running around in full speed going around the corner, running neck-to-neck, all the around the back side, around the final corner, and then Nityānanda pulled ahead and it was Nityānanda Prabhu, Nityānanda Prabhu Ki! Jai!

So, then Sridam said you must be Balarāma no one else can beat me so why you like this, what happened? We all went back to spiritual world then we come back because khanai Kṛṣṇa has come as Gaurāṅga, and he’s starting the Sankirtan movement in Navadwip so I’m going to go there will you come with me?

He said Khanai is there, yes! Ok let’s go! You can’t go like this though you won’t fit in your too big, let me adjust your size to Kali Yuga, Nityānanda put his hand down his head, (HH JPS makes Funny noise describing the shrinking) Shrunk him down, then they went off to Navadwip, and when lord Nityānanda reached Navadwip he went to the house of one devotee Nandana acharya, and rested there.

Soon as lord Nityānanda reached Navadwip Lord Caitanya told all of the devotees Nityānanda Prabhu is here, so whose Nityānanda?

My eternal counterpart He’s like my brother go and find him, all the devotees went out looking, door-to-door asking everywhere, Lord Nityānanda here? We don’t know any Nityānanda, like that they’re going everywhere looking even they are looking in the slums like things like that the poor people’s places, they’re looking everywhere, it’s getting late at night (Door knocking noise) What do you want? Its late!

We’re looking for one Nityānanda What’s wrong with you devotees? Lord Chaitanya disturbing people again, I can’t sleep anymore!

So, they all returned back empty handed, said we couldn’t find Nityānanda, Lord Chaitanya asked everyone did you find? Did you find?

No, we couldn’t find, of course you couldn’t find Him! (Inaudible) This brings an important point, so many people are looking for God it’s like there’s a story that one village in India there was a man going with the torch in the night behind everyone’s back yard everywhere looking so the people said what are you doing?

What are you doing walking around our houses with the torch?

Are you a thief or what are you doing?

No no, I’m looking for the sun, (devotees laugh) it set in the west and I’m just looking where did it go, Good idea? Said my dear friend you don’t have to look for the sun with the torch, when the sun rises it illuminates the whole world, doesn’t need a torch to illuminate it, when Kṛṣṇa rises in the heart of the devotee then automatically becomes illuminated, Lord Chaitanya was explaining this point you could not find him because he’s the Lord, what to do then? Lord Chaitanya said but I can find Him.

Of course, Lord Chaitanya can find the Lord because he is the lord, Lord Chaitanya said he cannot hide from me! Tomorrow morning we’ll take out the kīrtan party and we’ll find Lord Nityānanda.

So early in the morning the kīrtan party went out, went throughout Navadwip Dham, people were seeing big early morning kīrtan and was wondering what is happening today, the beautiful lord Gaurāṅga wearing a garland which was almost touching his lotus feet, wearing his beautiful yellow robe, with his golden form and broad chest like a doorway his arms are beautiful and long touching almost his knees his neck had three lines of the conch shell and his lotus face was filled with tears of love and exceedingly beautiful his eyes were big and extended almost…looked as if almost extended to his ears, and his hair was tied in a bun as a brāhmaṇa with a flower in his hair and his forward has the Vaishnava tilak.

So, Lord Chaitanya was dancing in ecstasy with his associates this way the kīrtan the chanting was going on

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare

Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare,

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare

Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare

(Guru mahārāja singing the Mahā mantra)

and Lord Nityānanda he was hearing the kīrtan in a distance the Ching! Ching! Ching! sound of the Kartal’s, his hair stood on end, Lord Chaitanya was close all of a sudden Lord Chaitanya He took a turn and went to the house of Nandan Acharya to the court yard, the Garden and there for the first time in this Līlā, in this day of brahmā, Lord Chaitanya lord Nityānanda were re-uniting Nityānanda jumped up, opened his arms to Lord Chaitanya, Lord Chaitanya shouted Nityānanda

(devotees repeat)

Nityānanda!

(devotees repeat)

and Lord Nityānanda he cried in love Gaurāṅga!

(devotees repeat)

Gaurāṅga! (devotees repeat)

Nityānanda! (devotees repeat)

Gaurāṅga! (devotees repeat)

Nityānanda! (devotees repeat)

Gaurāṅga! (devotees repeat) the devas were showering flowers from the sky there was the sound of the celestial drums and lord Chaitanya and lord Nityānanda ran to each other and embraced each other and tears of love was flowing from their eyes and the devotees were becoming overwhelmed and the ecstasy, the mercy was just flowing so intensely and everyone was chanting

Nitāi Gaur Premānande Hari Haribol,

(devotees repeat)

Haribol, (devotees repeat)

Haribol, (devotees repeat)

Haribol (devotees repeat)

then Goura Nitāi and all the associates, Sridam went out and kīrtane through Navadwip, Lord Chaitanya is golden colour the colour of the molten gold, Nityānanda’s golden colour but reddish gold, he is also tall like lord Chaitanya so people were amazed, what happen?

There was one Gaurāṅga now there’s two but this one’s a little different everyone was amazed how there two? Brothers!

So, lord Chaitanya Nityānanda Prabhu they came simply to give us causeless mercy. All the fallen souls have the special mercy to get delivered by Goura Nitāi. I feel that there’s nothing wrong with Kṛṣṇa killing demons because they got liberation.

But Lord Chaitanya Nityānanda’s mercy is even greater because he gave even the demons love for Kṛṣṇa, when lord Chaitanya and Nityānanda delivered Jagāi Mādhāi, and gave them love for Kṛṣṇa, it was just unheard of, the two demons were given such a great mercy.

In Yama loka, they were keeping track of all Jagāi Mādhāi sinful reactions and they were calculating that all of our 29 hells aren’t enough, we’re going to have to create a special program just for them and they were just getting ready for a special rehabilitation program but then they were completely free from all their bad karma, it was big commotion in the Yama loka, did you hear what happen?

Jagāi Madhaya completely free from all their Karma! No! (devotees laugh) how did that happen? Lord Chaitanya absolved them from everything, so then Chitra Gupta the head accountant went to see Yama Raj to tell him what happened and he said Jagāi Mādhāi all their Karma’s have been wiped clean. How much Karam did they have? They had so much bad Karma that if we put it down in writing it will fill up warehouse after warehouse, room after room.

Jagāi Mādhāi they never committed the offence of sinning on the strength of the chanting of the holy name, they never chanted the holy name (devotees laugh), and once they got delivered, then they were very careful and didn’t break any of their vow, Anyway Yama raj, he wanted to know more, well he said what happen? How did this happen?

He said it’s Lord Gaurāṅga, he gave and Nityānanda Prabhu they gave them love for Godhead now the Jagāi Madhaya are dancing in ecstasy chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, when Yama raj heard this, he collapsed unconscious on the ground, all his decisions oh no! he went into shock! Was too much for him, and their sprinkling water trying to revive him but then Lord Śiva came and he said what’s happening? What’s wrong with Yama raj?

Explained what happened, He is unconscious, he’s in shock! Lord Śiva said he’s not in shock, He’s in ecstasy! (devotees laugh) when he heard…a pure devotee, when he heard about the unlimited mercy of Lord Caitanya he became overwhelmed in love for Kṛṣṇa. You can’t revive him with water you got to revive him with the holy name, so he told all of them to chant so then the whole Yama loka everyone started chanting to revive Yamaraj,

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare,

Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare Hare

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare,

Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare,

while they’re chanting, Yama Raj, he start to become conscious again, he saw everyone and saw Lord Śiva, he offered his respect to Lord Śiva, Lord Śiva embraced him and then kīrtan continued in Yama loka

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare,

Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare

So, in this way let the whole universe be filled with the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahā mantra, this is a purpose Goura Nitāi wants to see everyone delivered, Yama raj, he didn’t find any fault with lord Gaurāṅga’s delivering Jagāi Mādhāi, he was overwhelmed in ecstasy.

So many times, people got hell but they come back and again they do sin it’s not…punishment alone doesn’t correct people but by the mercy of Goura Nitāi the demoniac tendency to be rebel against Kṛṣṇa is destroyed and one develops desire to serve Kṛṣṇa and chant his holy name. Chaitanya Caritamrita mentions one time how Śivānanda Sena made Lord Nityānanda wait for Prasādam, he mismanaged the traveling party and the devotees were going from Bengal to Jagannath Purī, finally going the whole day without any food and Lord Nityānanda gave a kick to Śivānanda Sena’s stomach why you making all the devotees wait? Śivānanda Sen took it as the mercy of the Lord and he was really…mismanaged, he got special mercy from Nityānanda.

One of the relatives of Śivānanda Sena took offence, why Nityānanda kicking Śivānanda Sena, this is not proper, then when Śivānanda heard he went to talk to him and said no! no! this is…Whatever lord Nityānanda does is perfect. Great sages and Rishi’s meditating their whole life just to get the lotus feet of the Lord.

He kicked me with that lotus feet, this is special mercy, so the devotee doesn’t take any fault with what the Lord does.

One day Lord Chaitanya He asked Śrīvas Thakur who he met while walking in the road, how are you?

Everything is alright by your mercy Lord, why do you hang around with that Lord Nityānanda so much, that Nityānanda?

Why do you respect him so much?

Isn’t he a bad association? He acts a little strange sometimes, running around with kids, shouting loudly, he acts you know unpredictable, so why do you associate with him and respect him so much, Śrīvas was shocked to hear these words from Lord Gaurāṅga, says why you are testing me my Lord?

Lord Nityānanda is the purest devotee everything he does is out of pure love for Kṛṣṇa, I have no doubt in Lord Nityānanda everything he’s doing is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. even if he came out of some sinful place, I would know he must be there for preaching or something, I have full faith in Nityānanda then Lord Chaitanya said was actually was testing Śrīvas, so Śrīvas passed the test.

You see every one of us who have our faith tested in various ways and just like Brahmā is explaining here in this verse how the devotee never... their faith in the Lord and the Guru doesn’t get shaken. So therefore, also Lord Brahmā His faith in Lord Śiva wasn’t shaken so then Lord Chaitanya said to Śrīvas Prabhu because of your strong faith in Nityānanda the original Guru, you have purchased me your devotion for him has bought me know I belong to you, even if you want to can do anything, you can give me away in charity or put me up for auction on the street, I’m yours, you have purchased me by your devotion to Lord Nityānanda. Like that the devotee’s by sincere devotion to their guru can win over Kṛṣṇa and attract Kṛṣṇa’s causeless mercy,

Śrīla Prabhupāda Ki! Jai! Śrīla Gurudeva Ki! Jai!

Any questions?

Nitāi means Nitāi, Goura means Goura, or Nityānanda and Gaurāṅga Premānanda - Prema means pure love of Kṛṣṇa, Ānanda means transcendental ecstasy of that pure love, Hari means the name..means Lord Kṛṣṇa and Bolo means chant, by the causeless mercy off Goura Nitāi chant the holy names of Lord Kṛṣṇa with your heart filled with transcendental love of Kṛṣṇa.

Nitāi Goura Premānanda Hari Hari Hari Haribol Haribol.

(devotee speak with Guru mahārāja - Inaudible) Well Lord Chaitanya only comes after Kṛṣṇa comes and He only come once in the day of Brahmā, and the 27th Kali Yuga of the thousand Kali Yuga’s, I mean 27th Dwarpa Yuga He comes and then Lord Chaitanya may come in the Kali yuga after Lord Kṛṣṇa.Hare Krsna!

(devotees speak with HH JPS)

After Gita class I’ll give a class in the evening, (devotee say Haribol and talks – inaudible) nobody wants to know his name

He’s still hiding from the residents of Ekachakra, because if his name gets out then He’s finished, (devotee’s laugh) they never forgave him. Even when Janala Devī she went to visit Ekacakra to see the birth place of her husband and she saw an old man coming with a cane and they say he was saying something and tears was coming from his eyes, and as he came closer they heard what he were saying, Nityānanda oh Nityānanda Nityānanda Nityānanda, I want to tell… Nityānanda oh Nityānanda and they were amazed what’s going on, said my dear sir why you are chanting Nityānanda and crying like that, said Ekachakra has never been the same since Nityānanda left said he was dear to all the children how could I have *planted (Not Sure) in giving him to that Sanyasi! I would’ve given away my children but Nityānanda he was the life and soul of the whole village, we were just living to see him, he was playing every day all kinds of Kṛṣṇa Līlā’s, his presence was the whole life of all of our lives and when he left, the village became lifeless, dead, all I can remember is that beautiful form, Nityānanda! Nityānanda! Nityānanda! when will I see him again, then Janala Devī could see how dear Nityānanda was dear to all the Ekachakra Vasi’s, Nityānanda Prabhu Ki! Jai!

So, the sanyasi dare not let his name to know,

Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Thank you! (Devotes speak)

One day he was he was caught sneaking out of Mangal Ārti time with a suitcase, he was brought before Prabhupāda, Prabhupad said I gave you a chance but you trying to cheat, one chance I gave you, I forgave you but now again you did this now I don’t have choice but to call the police, so I called the police, took the guy away…another chapter, so to forgive someone, you should not let come in your mind again but it happens again that time you remember and if we apologies please forgive me for my offence we should also be sincere not that I just  apologies and I go on offending again that’s not sincere.

Apology should be sincere, forgiveness should be sincere but even if someone does apologize and does get forgiven, Kṛṣṇa may still recognize them but if one’s not sincere then again one might also commit offence so then what's the use?

So, we have to try to avoid the offences and the Vaishnava’s they should try to keep their heart clear from all these types of disturbing thoughts, it’s difficult in Kali Yuga, mind is very uncontrolled, but we have to try and bring back Kṛṣṇa in the mind and take out this type of disturbing thought.

Today we’ll have a concluding extension seminar question and answers about Congregational preaching, then I can end early so that some other people wanted to see me next, some extra time to see them, and to get ready for the afternoon program, thank you for tolerating me, for the wonderful hospitality and allowing this humble preacher to… trying to get purified by talking about Kṛṣṇa, looking to again see where everywhere is flooded with Kṛṣṇa consciousness, with Kṛṣṇa conscious literature and Namahatta groups and big temples, seems this temple is too crowded, need bigger (devotee laugh)

Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Pray to Gaura Nitāi

Śrīla Jayapatak maharaj ki! Jai!

Śrīla Prabhupad Ki! Jai!
