Pleased by the Prayers of Bali Mahārāja, Kṛṣṇa States the Reason for His Arrival
Under the Section: The Glories of Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.52

śuni’ jananīra vākya kṛṣṇa-saṅkarṣaṇa
sei kṣaṇe cali’ gelā balira bhavana

Jayapatākā Swami: After hearing the words of Their mother, Kṛṣṇa and Saṅkarṣaṇa (Balarāma) immediately went to the abode of Bali Mahārāja.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.53

nija-iṣṭa-deva dekhi’ bali mahārāja
magna hailena premānanda-sindhu-mājha

Jayapatākā Swami: When Bali Mahārāja saw his own worshipable Deities, he was merged in an ocean of ecstatic love.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.54

gṛha-putra-deha-vitta sakala bāndhava
sei-kṣaṇe pāda-padme āni’ dilā saba

Jayapatākā Swami: His household, his children, his body, his wealth, all his friends and associates, immediately he brought all of them and offered them at the lotus feet of the Lords.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.55

loma-harṣa aśru-pāta pulaka ānande
stuti kare pāda-padma dhari’ bali kānde

Jayapatākā Swami: His bodily hairs stood on end and tears flowed from his eyes, as he was feeling great ecstasy and he was saying prayers grabbing on Their lotus feet and he cried in ecstasy.

See Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.85.34-38.

Text 34: The sage Śukadeva said: Thus entreated by Their mother, O Bhārata, Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa employed Their mystic Yoga-māyā potency and entered the region of Sutala.

Text 35: When the King of the Daityas, Bali Mahārāja, noticed the arrival of the two Lords, his heart overflowed with joy, since he knew Them to be the Supreme Soul and worshipable Deity of the entire universe, and especially of himself. He immediately stood up and then bowed down to offer respects, along with his entire entourage.

Text 36: Bali took pleasure in offering Them elevated seats. After They sat down, he washed the feet of the two Supreme Personalities. Then he took that water, which purifies the whole world even up to Lord Brahmā, and poured it upon himself and his followers.

Text 37: He worshiped Them with all the riches at his disposal — priceless clothing, ornaments, fragrant sandalwood paste, betel nut, lamps, sumptuous food and so on. Thus he offered Them all his family’s wealth, and also his own self.

Text 38: Taking hold of the Lords’ lotus feet again and again, Bali, the conqueror of Indra’s army, spoke from his heart, which was melting out of his intense love. O King, as tears of ecstasy filled his eyes and the hair on his limbs stood on end, he began to speak with faltering words.

Jayapatākā Swami: Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma came to Sutala to see Bali Mahārāja. Bali Mahārāja was in complete ecstasy to see the Lords of his life. The Lord of the Universe.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.56

‘jaya jaya ananta prakaṭa saṅkarṣaṇa
jaya jaya kṛṣṇacandra gokula-bhūṣaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: All glories, all glories to Ananta, who has appeared as Saṅkarṣaṇa! All glories, all glories to Kṛṣṇacandra, the ornament of Gokula!

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.57

jaya sakhya gopācārya haladhara rāma
jaya jaya kṛṣṇa-bhakta-dhana-mana-prāṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: All glories, all glories to Haladhara Rāma, who is the friend of the cowherd boys and their ācārya! All glories, glories to Kṛṣṇa, who is the wealth and life of the devotees!

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.58-59

yadyapiha śuddha-sattva deva-ṛṣi-gaṇa
tā-sabāro durlabha tomāra daraśana

tathāpi hena se prabhu, kāruṇya tomāra
tamo-guṇa asure o hao sākṣātkāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Although the devas and sages are situated in pure goodness, it is very rare even for them to attain Your darśana. Nevertheless, O Lords, You are so merciful that You appear even before demons who are in the mode of ignorance.

Bali Mahārāja, who was the king of the Daityas, the demons, he is being very humble and he is glorifying the Lord, how He has appeared before the demons. But Kṛṣṇa is so wonderful that even demons can become devotees. Like Prahlāda Mahārāja, Bali Mahārāja.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.60

ataeva śatru-mitra nāhika tomāte
vede o kahena, ihā dekhi o sākṣāte

Jayapatākā Swami: Therefore, You have neither friends nor enemies. Even the Vedas also say this and I am directly seeing this.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.61

mārite ye āila laiyā viṣa-stana
tāhāre o pāṭhāilā vaikuṇṭha-bhuvana

Jayapatākā Swami: Who came to kill you and put poison on her breast, even her, You have sent to Your abode of Vaikuṇṭha.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.62

bhagavān o bhaktera mahattva akṣaja-jñānera agamya—

ataeva tomāra hṛdaya bujhibāre
vede śāstre yogeśvara sabe o nā pāre

Jayapatākā Swami: Therefore, to understand Your heart, even the Vedas, scriptures, best of the yogīs, they cannot understand Your heart.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.63

yogeśvara saba yāṅra māyā nāhi jāne
muñi pāpī asura vā janiba kemane

Jayapatākā Swami: Even the best of the yogīs cannot understand your potencies. I am a sinner, demon, how can I know You?

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.64

ei kṛpā kara more sarva-lokanātha!
gṛha-andha-kūpe more nā kariha pāta

Jayapatākā Swami: O Lord of all the planets, have this mercy on me, do not throw me in the dark well of family life.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.65

tora dui pāda-padma hṛdaye dhariyā
śānta hai’ vṛkṣa-mūle paḍi thākoṅ giyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Your two lotus feet I hold in my heart and being peaceful, let me stay on the root of a tree of the universe in this way.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.66

tomāra dāsera saṅge more kara dāsa
āra yena citte mora nā thākaye āśa’

Jayapatākā Swami: In the association of Your servants, make me Your servant, that my consciousness never is distracted by some material desire.

Purport: Liberated souls have no desire other than to live in the association of the Lord’s devotees and serve the actual devotees. At present, since the servants of Śrī Gauḍīya Maṭha have clearly understood this topic, they reside in maṭhas and temples with Hari, Guru, and Vaiṣṇava.

Jayapatākā Swami: This purport of the Caitanya-bhāgavata was written by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura. The purpose of spiritual life is to live in the association of Vaiṣṇavas and serve their lotus feet. Previously, devotees were living in the temple, like ISKCON Dallas was established by Śrīla Prabhupāda. But recently, since Śrīla Prabhupāda’s centennial, we established the Bhakti-vṛkṣa groups where people can have the association of devotees, Vaiṣṇavas and serve their lotus feet.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.67

rāma-kṛṣṇa-pāda-padma dhariyā hṛdaye
ei mata stuti kare bali-mahāśaye

Jayapatākā Swami: The lotus feet of Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa holding to his heart, in this way prayers were offered by Bali Mahārāja Mahāśaya.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.68

brahma-loka śiva-loka ye caraṇodake
pavitra karitechena bhāgīrathī-rūpe

Jayapatākā Swami: In the form of the Bhāgīrathī, Gaṅgā, the water that washed the lotus feet of the Lord, purifies the abodes of Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.69

hena puṇya-jala bali goṣṭhīra sahite
pāna kare śire dhare bhāgyodaya haite

Jayapatākā Swami: Because of this auspicious water, Bali Mahārāja and his family and associates, they were able to drink this water and put it on their heads, and thus they could achieve all auspiciousness.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.70

gandha, puṣpa, dhūpa, dīpa, vastra, alaṅkāra
pāda-padme diyā bali kare namaskāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Bali Mahārāja he offered sandalwood pulp, flowers, incense, lamps, cloth and ornaments at the lotus feet of the Lords and bowed down before Them.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.71

‘ājñā kara prabhu more śikhāo āpane
yadi more bhṛtya hena jñāna thāke mane

Jayapatākā Swami: O my Lords, please give me Your instructions and instruct me personally. If you think that I am Your servant, then personally give me instructions and Your orders.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.72

bhagavadājñā-pālanakārīi vidhiniṣedhera parapāre gamane samartha—

ye karaye prabhu, ājñā-pālana tomāra
sei jana haya vidhi-niṣedhera pāra’

Jayapatākā Swami: O Lords, anyone who follows Your orders, he transcends all rules and regulations.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.73

śuniyā balira vākya prabhu tuṣṭa hai
lāye nimitta āgamana kahite lāgilā

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord became pleased on hearing the words of Bali Mahārāja. He began to tell the reason for His coming.

Purport: See Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.85.39-46.

Text 39: King Bali said: Obeisances to the unlimited Lord, Ananta, the greatest of all beings. And obeisances to Lord Kṛṣṇa, the creator of the universe, who appears as the impersonal Absolute and the Supersoul in order to disseminate the principles of sāṅkhya and yoga.

Text 40: Seeing You Lords is a rare achievement for most living beings. But even persons like us, situated in the modes of passion and ignorance, can easily see You when You reveal Yourself by Your own sweet will.

Texts 41-43: Many who had been constantly absorbed in enmity toward You ultimately became attracted to You, who are the direct embodiment of transcendental goodness and whose divine form comprises the revealed scriptures. These reformed enemies include Daityas, Dānavas, Gandharvas, Siddhas, Vidyādharas, Cāraṇas, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Piśācas, Bhūtas, Pramathas and Nāyakas, and also ourselves and many others like us. Some of us have become attracted to You because of exceptional hatred, while others have become attracted because of their mood of devotion based on lust. But the demigods and others infatuated by material goodness feel no such attraction for You.

Text 44: What to speak of ourselves, O Lord of all perfect yogīs, even the greatest mystics do not know what Your spiritual power of delusion is or how it acts.

Text 45: Please be merciful to me so I may get out of the blind well of family life — my false home — and find the true shelter of Your lotus feet, which selfless sages always seek. Then, either alone or in the company of great saints, who are the friends of everyone, I may wander freely, finding life’s necessities at the feet of the universally charitable trees.

Text 46: O Lord of all subordinate creatures, please tell us what to do and thus free us of all sin. One who faithfully executes Your command, O master, is no longer obliged to follow the ordinary Vedic rites.

Jayapatākā Swami: So Bali Mahārāja, he understood how serving Lord Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma was the real perfection of life. In the Bhagavad-gītā (18.66) Kṛṣṇa gives instruction –

sarva-dharmān parityajya
mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja

ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo
mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ

– that simply surrender to Me, I will protect you from all the sinful reactions.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.74

prabhu bale,—“śuna śuna bali-mahāśaya!
ye nimitte āilāṅa tomāra ālaya

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Kṛṣṇa said, listen, listen, Bali Mahāśaya! This is why We have come to your abode.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.75

amāra māyera chaya putra pāpī kaṁse
mārileka, sei pāpe seha maila śeṣe

Jayapatākā Swami: My mother, Devakī’s six sons were killed by the sinful Kaṁsa. Because of his sin, he was ultimately killed.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.76

niravadhi sei putra-śoka saṅariyā
kāndena devakī-mātā duḥkhitā haiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: By constantly remembering the bereavement of losing her sons, my mother Devakī cries and feels distressed.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 6.77

tomāra nikaṭe āche sei chaya jana
tāhā niba jananīra santoṣa-kāraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Those six sons are here with you. I will take them for My mother’s satisfaction.

Kṛṣṇa, He is the ultimate potency to do whatever He wants. He knew exactly where the sons were and He would bring them back to His mother. In this way, He is completely independent Lord.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Hearing the Prayers of Bali Mahārāja, Kṛṣṇa States the Reason for His Arrival
Under the Section: The Glories of Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu

Haribol! Remember a brāhmaṇa asked Lord Caitanya to explain how Lord Nityānanda He acted, He appeared strangely, and he wanted to understand what the actual position of Lord Nityānanda was. Lord Caitanya was saying how a very elevated soul, He can do things and is not subject to the same analysis as others. Just like Mahadeva could drink the poison from the ocean. But if we take one drop of poison we will die. He could drink all the ocean of poison. We cannot imitate Him, we cannot understand him. So this in is the explanation we have gone to the six sons who were killed by Kaṁsa, to Sutala. We will find out why these six sons, the brothers of Kṛṣṇa, the sons of Devakī, why they were killed. Stay tuned for tomorrow.

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Haribol!
