Under the Section: Pastimes with Jagadānanda Paṇḍita and Raghunātha Bhaṭṭa Gosvāmī
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.1
kṛṣṇavirahakṛśa athaca bhāvapraphulla prabhura āśrayagrahaṇa :—
kṛṣṇa-viccheda-jātārtyā
kṣīṇe cāpi manas-tanū
dadhāte phullatāṁ bhāvair
yasya taṁ gauram āśraye
Translation: Let me take shelter at the lotus feet of Lord Gauracandra. His mind became exhausted and His body very thin from the pain of separation from Kṛṣṇa, but when He felt ecstatic love for the Lord, He again became fully developed.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.3
hena-mate mahāprabhu jagadānanda-saṅge
nānā-mate āsvādaya premera taraṅge
Translation: In this way, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu would taste various transcendental relationships of pure love in the company of Jagadānanda Paṇḍita.
Jayapatākā Swami: So here we are about to hear various examples of loving pastimes with Jagadānanda Paṇḍita. Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, in the Gaura-ganoddeśa-dīpikā, it states that he was Satyabhāmā in kṛṣṇa-līlā.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.4
ukta ślokārtha :—
kṛṣṇa-vicchede duḥkhe kṣīṇa mana-kāya
bhāvāveśe prabhu kabhu praphullita haya
Translation: The unhappiness of separation from Kṛṣṇa exhausted the Lord’s mind and reduced the structure of His body, but when He felt emotions of ecstatic love, He again became developed and healthy.
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya was experimenting in the love of Rādhārāṇī for Kṛṣṇa. Sometimes He would be in intense separation of Kṛṣṇa and then Kṛṣṇa would become very reduced and thin, and when He felt ecstatic love He became very developed and healthy.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.5
prabhura kaṭhora vairāgya :—
kalāra śaralāte, śayana, ati kṣīṇa kaya
śaralāte hāḍa lāge, vyathā haya gāya
Translation: Because He was very thin, when He lay down to rest on the dry bark of plantain trees, it caused Him pain in His bones.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.6
taddarśane prabhusukhatatpara bhaktagaṇera kaṣṭa; jagadānandera prabhusukha-vidhāne ceṣṭā :—
dekhi’ saba bhakta-gaṇa mahā-duḥkha pāya
sahite nāre jagadānanda, sṛjilā upāya
Translation: All the devotees felt very unhappy to see Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu in pain. Indeed, they could not tolerate it. Then Jagadānanda Paṇḍita devised a remedy.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, he was thinking what can I do to relieve Lord Caitanya’s pain.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.7
prabhura janya geruyā oyāḍa diyā toṣaka o bāliśa taiyāra :—
sūkṣma vastra āni’ gaurika diyā rāṅgāilā
śimulīra tūlā diyā tāhā pūrāilā
Translation: He acquired some fine cloth and colored it with red oxide. Then he filled it with cotton from a śimula tree.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.8
prabhura vyavahāre niyogārtha govindake anurodha :—
eka tūlī-bālisa govindera hāte dilā
‘prabhure śoyāiha ihāya’—tāhāre kahilā
Translation: In this way he made a quilt and a pillow, which he then gave to Govinda, saying, “Ask the Lord to lie on this.”
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s purpose was to save Lord Caitanya’s feeling pain in His body.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.9
śrī-svarūpakeo anurodha :—
svarūpa-gosāñike kahe jagadānanda
‘āji āpane yāñā prabhure karāiha śayana’
Translation: Jagadānanda said to Svarūpa Dāmodara Gosvāmī, “Today please personally persuade Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to lie down on the bed.”
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.10
svarūpa o govindera taddvārā śayyā-racanā, taddarśane prabhura krodha :—
śayanera kāle svarūpa tāhāṅi rahilā
tūlī-bālisa dekhi’ prabhu krodhāviṣṭa ha-ilā
Translation: When it was time for the Lord to go to bed, Svarūpa Dāmodara stayed nearby, but when Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu saw the quilt and pillow, He was immediately very angry.
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya was following great vairāgya, austerities. All the devotees were suffering because of this. But Lord Caitanya was maintaining a very strict standard.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.11
prabhura tannirmmāṇakārīra nāma-jijñāsā; paṇḍitera nāma-śravaṇe prabhura bhaya :—
govindere puchena,—‘ihā karāila kon jana?’
jagadānandera nāma śuni’ saṅkoca haila mana
Translation: The Lord inquired from Govinda, “Who has made this?” When Govinda named Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was somewhat fearful.
Jayapatākā Swami: In the past, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita had given things to Lord Caitanya, but when He refused and Jagadānanda Paṇḍita became very angry.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.12
tatkṣaṇāt sei śayyā dūre nikṣepa o kadalīpatre śayana :—
govindere kahi’ sei tūli dūra kailā
kalāra śaralā-upara śayana karilā
Translation: After asking Govinda to put aside the quilt and pillow, the Lord lay down on the dry plantain bark.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya was using dry banana bark as His bedding.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.13
svarūpakarttṛka jagadānandera duḥkhaprāptira sambhāvanā-jñāpana :—
svarūpa kahe,—‘tomāra icchā, ki kahite pāri?
śayyā upekṣile paṇḍita duḥkha pābe bhārī’
Translation: Svarūpa Dāmodara said to the Lord, “I cannot contradict Your supreme will, my Lord, but if You do not accept the bedding, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita will feel great unhappiness.”
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.14
āpanāke virakta yati-abhimāne prabhura kṛtrima krodhapūrvaka anuyoga :—
prabhu kahena,—“khāṭa eka ānaha pāḍite
jagadānanda cāhe āmāya viṣaya bhuñjāite
Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu replied, “You might as well bring a bedstead here for Me to lie on. Jagadānanda wants Me to enjoy material happiness.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.15
sannyāsī mānuṣa āmāra bhūmite śayana
āmāre khāṭa-tūli-bālisa mastaka-muṇḍana”
Translation: “I am in the renounced order, and therefore I must lie on the floor. For Me to use a bedstead, quilt or pillow would be very shameful.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya was following this strict standard 500 years ago. But Śrīla Prabhupāda, he did not enforce such a strict standard. But Lord Caitanya was observing a very austere sannyāsa standard.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.16
jagadānandake svarūpera prabhuvākya-jñāpana, paṇḍitera kleśa :—
svarūpa-gosāñi āsi’ paṇḍite kahilā
śuni’ jagadānanda mane mahā-duḥkha pāilā
Translation: When Svarūpa Dāmodara returned and related all these incidents, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita felt very unhappy.
Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita understood that actually Lord Caitanya was the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So He did not need to take all these austerities. So Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was very unhappy at this turn of events.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.17
sevā-catura śrī-svarūpera prabhu-sevārtha śayyā-dravya nirmmāṇa :—
svarūpa-gosāñi tabe sṛjilā prakāra
kadalīra śuṣka-patra ānilā apāra
Translation: Then Svarūpa Dāmodara Gosvāmī devised another method. First he secured a large quantity of dry banana leaves.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.18
nakhe ciri’ ciri’ tāhā ati sūkṣma kailā
prabhura bahirvāsa duite se saba bharilā
Translation: He then tore the leaves into very fine fibers with his nails and filled two of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s outer garments with the fibers.
Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, Svarūpa Dāmodara was making a kind of bedstead out of banana leaves.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.19
atikaṣṭe prabhura tad grahaṇe sammati-pradāna :—
ei-mata dui kailā oḍana-pāḍane
aṅgīkāra kailā prabhu aneka yatane
Translation: In this way, Svarūpa Dāmodara made some bedding and a pillow, and after much endeavor by the devotees, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepted them.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, since Lord Caitanya wanted to pleases His devotees, He accepted this offering.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.20
prabhura śayane sakale sukhī, kevalamātra jagadānandera duḥkha :—
tāte śayana karena prabhu,—dekhi’ sabe sukhī
jagadānanda—bhitare krodha bāhire mahā-duḥkhī
Translation: Everyone was happy to see the Lord lie down on that bed, but Jagadānanda was inwardly angry, and externally he appeared very unhappy.
Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita had prepared something much more appropriate in his mind. So he was feeling very sad and angry that the Lord was not accepting this. Although the other devotees were happy that Lord Caitanya had at least accepted a thicker banana leaf arrangement.
Actually, Lord Caitanya is called Mahāprabhu, He is trying to instruct by His example.
Thus Ends the Chapter Entitled, When the Quilt and Pillow was Not Accepted by Lord Caitanya, Jagadānanda is Angry and Unhappy
Under the Section: Pastimes with Jagadānanda Paṇḍita and Raghunātha Bhaṭṭa Gosvāmī
Different devotees had different pastimes with Lord Caitanya. So, some of the pastimes were straightforward and some of them were twisted or very complicated. Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s pastimes were unique.
He wrote a book called Prema-vivarta. He performed different pastimes which were very unique with Jagadānanda Paṇḍita. Like, he went with Lord Caitanya and Gadādhara Prabhu when They were students. Lord Caitanya picked up a parrot from the tree and said, “Oh! you are a śuka-pākhī, you are just like the parrot Śukadeva Gosvāmī. So tell me some pastime of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.”
But the parrot began to chant, “Gaura Gaura, Gaura Gaura, Gaura Gaura, Gaura Gaura, Gaura Gaura!”
Lord Caitanya threw the parrot away, “No, no, I don’t want to hear that. I am a devotee of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, I will only hear the glories of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.”
So, the parrot said, “I have been chanting this mantra since time immemorial. You chant Rādhā Kṛṣṇa your way, I will chant my way - Gaura Gaura, Gaura Gaura, Gaura Gaura, Gaura Gaura, Gaura Gaura!”
Then Lord Caitanya said, “You are non- different from Śukadeva, why don’t you glorify Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa?”
The parrot said, “You see, Kṛṣṇa is present before me as Gaurāṅga, and Rādhā is present before me as Gadādhara, so I chant the name of Gaura and Gadādhara. Gaura Gaura, Gaura Gaura, Gaura Gaura!”
So Lord Caitanya covered His ears and ran away. So these are the kind of stories that are there in the book Prema-vivarta by Jagadananda Paṇḍita.
