Jagadānanda Paṇḍita Intends to Beat Sanātana Gosvāmī with a Cooking Pot
Under the Section: Pastimes with Jagadānanda Paṇḍita and Raghunātha Bhaṭṭa Gosvāmī

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.42

bhaktagaṇa haite vidāya laiyā kāśī-āgamana :—

saba bhakta-gaṇa-ṭhāñi ājñā māgilā
vana-pathe cali’ cali’ vārāṇasī āilā

Translation: He took permission from all the devotees and then departed. Traveling on the forest path, he soon reached Vārāṇasī.

Jayapatākā Swami: So Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, he went by the forest path and thus he was following in the footsteps of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and arrived at Vārāṇasī.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.43

tapanamiśra o vaidya candraśekhara-saha sākṣātkāra o saṁlāpa :—

tapana-miśra, candraśekhara,—doṅhāre mililā

Translation: When he met Tapana Miśra and Candraśekhara in Vārāṇasī, they heard from him about topics concerning Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: Tapana Miśra and Candraśekhara followed Lord Caitanya’s orders and stayed at Vārāṇasī, but naturally they were very eager to hear about the pastimes of Lord Caitanya. So meeting with Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, he told them about Lord Caitanya’s transcendental activities.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.44

mathurāya sanātanasaha milana o ubhayera ānanda :—

mathurāte āsi’ mililā sanātane
dui-janera saṅge duṅhe ānandita mane

Translation: Finally Jagadānanda Paṇḍita reached Mathurā, where he met Sanātana Gosvāmī. They were very pleased to see each other.

Jayapatākā Swami: When Vaiṣṇavas meet each other, they are naturally very pleased. When we have the great Milan in Māyāpur at the time of the appearance day of Lord Caitanya, the devotees are very happy to meet other devotees from different parts of the world. Is that correct?

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.45

sanātanānugatye paṇḍitera dvādaśavana-darśana :—

sanātana karāilā tāṅre dvādaśa vana daraśana
gokule rahilā duṅhe dekhi’ mahāvana

Translation: After Sanātana Gosvāmī had taken Jagadānanda to see all twelve forests of Vṛndāvana, concluding with Mahāvana, the two of them remained in Gokula.

Jayapatākā Swami: Just as in Navadvīpa there are nine islands, there are twelve forests in Vṛndāvana.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.46

ubhayera ekatra avasthāna, kintu pṛthak abhyāsa-mata pṛthak khādya-grahaṇa :—

sanātanera gophāte duṅhe rahe eka-ṭhāñi
paṇḍita pāka karena devālaye yāi’

Translation: They stayed in Sanātana Gosvāmī’s cave, but Jagadānanda Paṇḍita would go to a nearby temple and cook for himself.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.47

sanātana bhikṣā karena yāi’ mahāvane
kabhu devālaye, kabhu brāhmaṇa-sadane

Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī would beg alms from door to door in the vicinity of Mahāvana. Sometimes he would go to a temple and sometimes to a brāhmaṇa’s house.

Jayapatākā Swami: So Sanātana Gosvāmī was doing mādhukarī, he was begging from door to door. That was how he survived. Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, he went to a nearby temple and cooked prasāda.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.48

mānada sanātanakarttṛka paṇḍitera sevā :—

sanātana paṇḍitera kare samādhāna
mahāvane dena āni’ māgi’ anna-pāna

Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī attended to all of Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s needs. He begged in the area of Mahāvana and brought Jagadānanda all kinds of things to eat and drink.

Jayapatākā Swami: So Sanātana Gosvāmī was begging for Jagadānanda Paṇḍita.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.49

ekadina paṇḍitera sanātanake nimantraṇa o randhana :—

eka-dina sanātane paṇḍita nimantrilā
nitya-kṛtya kari’ teṅha pāka caḍāilā

Translation: One day Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, having invited Sanātana to the nearby temple for lunch, finished his routine duties and began to cook.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.50

mastake sannyāsidatta-vastra paridhānapūrvaka sanātanera paṇḍitera gṛhe āgamana :—

‘mukunda sarasvatī’ nāma sannyāsī mahājane
eka bahirvāsa teṅho dila sanātane

Translation: Previously, a great sannyāsī named Mukunda Sarasvatī had given Sanātana Gosvāmī an outer garment.

Jayapatākā Swami: The sannyāsīs wear kaupīna, a bahir-vāsa - outer garment, and a front piece which is called uttarīya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.51

sanātana sei vastra mastake bāndhiyā
jagadānandera vāsā-dvāre vasilā āsiyā

Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī was wearing this cloth bound about his head when he came to Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s door and sat down.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since Jagadānanda Paṇḍita had invited Sanātana Gosvāmī to take lunch with him, so Sanātana Gosvāmī sat down in Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s place and he was wearing the cloth that the sannyāsī had given him, on his head.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.52

sanātanera vastrake prabhudatta-vastra-jñāne paṇḍitera prema :—

rātula vastra dekhi’ paṇḍita premāviṣṭa ha-ilā
‘mahāprabhura prasāda’ jāni’ tāṅhāre puchilā

Translation: Assuming the reddish cloth to be a gift from Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was overwhelmed with ecstatic love. Thus he questioned Sanātana Gosvāmī.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.53

sanātanera vastraprāptira kāraṇa-jijñāsā :—

“kāhāṅ pāilā tumi ei rātula vasana?”
‘mukunda-sarasvatī’ dila,—kahe sanātana

Translation: “Where did you get that reddish cloth on your head?” Jagadānanda asked.

Sanātana Gosvāmī replied, “Mukunda Sarasvatī gave it to me.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Sanātana Gosvāmī told the truth that he got the cloth from this renowned sannyāsī, Mukunda Sarasvatī. But Jagadānanda Paṇḍita thought that he got the cloth from Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.54

prabhu vyatīta anya sannyāsīra dāna-grahaṇe paṇḍitera krodha :—

śuni’ paṇḍitera mane krodha upajila
bhātera hāṇḍi hāte lañā mārite āila

Translation: Hearing this, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita immediately became very angry and took a cooking pot in his hand, intending to beat Sanātana Gosvāmī.

Jayapatākā Swami: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, he would easily become angry if he thought something was transgressing Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.55

sanātanera lajjā :—

sanātana tāṅre jāni’ lajjita ha-ilā
balite lāgilā paṇḍita hāṇḍi culāte dharilā

Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī, however, knew Jagadānanda Paṇḍita very well and was consequently somewhat ashamed. Jagadānanda therefore left the cooking pot on the stove and spoke as follows.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.56

sanātanake paṇḍitera bhartsanā :—

“tumi mahāprabhura hao pārṣada-pradhāna
tomā-sama mahāprabhura priya nāhi āna

Translation: “You are one of the chief associates of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Indeed, no one is dearer to Him than you.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.57

anya sannyāsīra vastra tumi dhara śire
kon aiche haya,—ihā pāre sahibāre?”

Translation: “Still, you have bound your head with a cloth given to you by another sannyāsī. Who can tolerate such behavior?”

Jayapatākā Swami: So Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was expressing why he is angry.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.58

amānī mānada mahādhīra sanātana-gosvāmīra ātmadainya o paṇḍitera gauraprema-niṣṭhā-praśaṃsā :—

sanātana kahe—“sādhu paṇḍita-mahāśaya!
tomā-sama caitanyera priya keha naya

Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī said, “My dear Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, you are a greatly learned saint. No one is dearer to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu than you.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So Jagadānanda Paṇḍita is saying to Sanātana Gosvāmī that you are the dear most to Lord Caitanya. And Sanātana Gosvāmī is saying to Jagadānanda Paṇḍita you are the dear most to Lord Caitanya. Such are the dealings of the associates of Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.59

aiche caitanya-niṣṭhā yogya tomāte
tumi nā dekhāile ihā śikhiba ke-mate?

Translation: “This faith in Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu quite befits you. Unless you demonstrate it, how could I learn such faith?”

Jayapatākā Swami: Many times, devotees ask, we have faith in Kṛṣṇa, but how can we develop faith in Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu? Sanātana Gosvāmī was saying that you Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, your niṣṭhā, your faith in Lord Caitanya is very great and by your demonstrating it, you are teaching us.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.60

paṇḍitera premaparīkṣaṇa o pratyakṣa taddarśana :—

yāhā dekhibāre vastra mastake bāndhila
sei apūrva prema ei pratyakṣa dekhila

Translation: “My purpose in binding my head with the cloth has now been fulfilled because I have personally seen your uncommon love for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Gaurāṅga! Haribol! Sometimes we like to think how this activity served guru and Gaurāṅga. Sanātana Gosvāmī said, the real purpose for my putting this cloth on my head was fulfilled when I saw your uncommon love for Lord Caitanya. Haribol! Gaurāṅga!

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 13.61

rāgamārgīya paramahaṁsera kāṣāya-vastra-paridhāna-viṣaye niṣiddhatā :—

rakta-vastra ‘vaiṣṇavera’ parite nā yuyāya
kona pravāsīre dimu, ki kāya uhāya?

Translation: “This saffron cloth is unfit for a Vaiṣṇava to wear; therefore I have no use for it. I shall give it to a stranger.”

Purport: Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura comments on this incident as follows: Vaiṣṇavas are all liberated persons, unattached to anything material. Therefore a Vaiṣṇava need not accept the dress of a sannyāsī to prove his exalted position. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepted the renounced order from a sannyāsī of the Māyāvāda school. Present-day Vaiṣṇava sannyāsīs, however, never think that by accepting the dress of the sannyāsa order they have become equal to Caitanya Mahāprabhu. In fact, a Vaiṣṇava accepts the sannyāsa order to remain an eternal servant of his spiritual master. He accepts the sannyāsa order knowing that he is unequal to his spiritual master, who is a paramahaṁsa, and he thinks that he is unfit to dress like a paramahaṁsa. Therefore a Vaiṣṇava accepts sannyāsa out of humility, not out of pride.

Sanātana Gosvāmī had adopted the dress of a paramahaṁsa; therefore it was inappropriate for him to wear the saffron cloth on his head. However, a Vaiṣṇava sannyāsī does not think himself fit to imitate the dress of a paramahaṁsa Vaiṣṇava. According to the principles set down by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu (tṛṇād api su-nīcena), one should always think himself in the lowest stage, not on the level of a paramahaṁsa Vaiṣṇava. Thus a Vaiṣṇava will sometimes accept the sannyāsa order just to keep himself below the level of a paramahaṁsa Vaiṣṇava. This is the instruction of Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sanātana Gosvāmī and the other five of the Six Gosvāmīs, they wore the dress of a bābājī or paramahaṁsa. So, when this sannyāsī gave a red cloth to Sanātana Gosvāmī, actually Sanātana Gosvāmī was not wearing geruā or red cloth. He was dressed as a bābājī, as a paramahaṁsa, and so he put the cloth around his head, not knowing what to do with it. This pastime happened, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita, he thought that Sanātana Gosvāmī was wearing a saffron cloth on his head, it must be from Lord Caitanya. And when he heard that it was from someone else he became very angry and wanted to beat Santana Gosvāmī. But then he told Sanātana Gosvāmī you are the dear most of Lord Caitanya, why are you wearing anyone else’s cloth on your head? And Sanātana Gosvāmī was saying, you are the dear most to Lord Caitanya. And because of your uncommon love for Lord Caitanya, my purpose was fulfilled for wearing this saffron cloth on my head.

But when we take sannyāsa, not out of pride. It is that we are keeping ourselves within the varṇāśrama - brahmacarya, gṛhastha, vānaprastha and sannyāsa. So we are not taking the position of paramahaṁsas. We say to Śrīla Prabhupāda Oṁ viṣṇupāda paramahaṁsa. So Śrīla Prabhupāda is a paramahaṁsa, parivrājakācārya, he established 108 temples around the world, which are our worshipable places. And we can keep the humble position, Śrīla Prabhupāda is paramahaṁsa and we are lower. But Śrīla Prabhupāda said in 1973 in London on his Vyāsa-pūjā, that he wanted all his gṛhastha followers to be paramahaṁsas. So, this does not mean that he wanted them to take sannyāsa, but that as gṛhasthas, he wanted them to become paramahaṁsas, that means they would be fully dedicated to serving guru and Kṛṣṇa. So in that way Śrīla Prabhupāda, he gave his blessings to all his devotees, to be fully in their Kṛṣṇa consciousness. One time may be in 1977 Śrīla Prabhupāda when he was a bit sick, he decided to go to the temple, that time he sat on his vyāsāsana and he wished, he blessed, that his disciples would be dedicated, would be completely strong in their Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and that also they would preach the message of Lord Caitanya. So that was his desire. He mentioned in London that his Guru Mahārāja had sent some sannyāsīs to preach in London, but they were not able to do much. One of the British Lords asked a sannyāsī, “Can you make me a brāhmaṇa?” “Yes, I can make you a brāhmaṇa,” said the sannyāsī. “You have to follow the four principles – no meat eating, no illicit sex, no wine, no gambling, no intoxication.” “That is impossible!” he said! That is my life! So, they are not able to change the people. But Śrīla Prabhupāda said, I sent three gṛhastha couples and I forget which, in one of the London newspapers the front-page article was ‘Hare Kṛṣṇas Rock London’! So he said, “My gṛhastha devotees did what the sannyāsīs could not.” So, like that Śrīla Prabhupāda had great expectation from his gṛhastha followers. Hare Kṛṣṇa!
