By Nityānanda’s Mercy the Dacoits are Intoxicated with Love for Kṛṣṇa and Constantly Chant ‘Kṛṣṇa’
Under the Section: The Pastimes of Nityānanda

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.678

sakalera vismaya o bhakta brāhmaṇake praṇāma —

śuniyā sabāra haila mahāścarya-jñāna
brāhmaṇera prati sabe karena praṇāma

sakalera vismaya o bhakta brāhmaṇake praṇāma —

śuniyā sabāra haila mahāścarya-jñāna
brāhmaṇera prati sabe karena praṇāma

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the words of the dacoit leader, everyone became greatly astonished. They all offered obeisances to the brāhmaṇa.

So those devotees, they realized that this dacoit leader the commander of the dacoits, he had received the mercy of Lord Nityānanda, who is known as patita-pāvana, the deliverer of the most fallen.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.679

brāhmaṇera gaṅgāya dehatyāgarūpa prāyaścitte saṅkalpa—

dvija bale,—“prabhu, ebe āmāra vidāya
e deha rākhite āra more nāhi bhāya

Jayapatākā Swami: The brāhmaṇa said, “O Lord, now is my farewell. It is not proper for me to maintain this body any longer.

So the dacoit leader is saying that he wants to end his life. He explains why.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.680

yena mora citta haila tomāra hiṁsāya
sei mora prāyaścitta—marimu gaṅgāya”

Jayapatākā Swami: Since I intended to harm You, my atonement should be to drown myself in the sacred Ganges.

So the dacoit leader, he is very much repentant for his sins.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.681

śuni’ ati akaitava dvijera vacana
tuṣṭa hailena prabhu, sarva bhakta-gaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: On hearing the extremely sincere words of the brāhmaṇa, Lord Nityānanda and the devotees all became pleased.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.682

prabhu bale,—“dvija, tumi bhāgyavanta baḍa
janma janma kṛṣṇera sevaka tumi daḍha

prabhu bale,—“dvija, tumi bhāgyavanta baḍa
janma janma kṛṣṇera sevaka tumi daḍha

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda said, “O brāhmaṇa, you are most fortunate. Birth after birth, you should be a servant of Lord Kṛṣṇa.”

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.683

nahile e-mata kṛpā karibena kene
e prakāśa anye ki dekhaye bhṛtya vine

nahile e-mata kṛpā karibena kene
e prakāśa anye ki dekhaye bhṛtya vine

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Nityānanda is saying you are a solid servant of Lord Kṛṣṇa, otherwise, why would Lord Kṛṣṇa be bestowing such mercy upon you. Other than a devotee, the servant, can anyone manifest such a characteristic?

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.684

patita-tāraṇa-hetu caitanya-gosāñi
avatari āchena ihāte anya nāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: Deliverance of the fallen is the reason Caitanya Gosāñī has descended from the spiritual world. This is the reason you are delivered, there is no doubt about this.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.685

jīva punarāya svatantratāra apavyavahāra nā karile patitapāvana-nityānandera kṣamā—

śuna dvija, yateka pātaka kaili tui
āra yadi nā karis saba nimu muñi

Jayapatākā Swami: “Listen! O brāhmaṇa, whatever sins you have committed, if you don’t do again, I will take all the reactions.”

Purport: If sins that are committed are confessed before a bona fide spiritual master, the sinner becomes relieved of the reactions. Then he no longer engages in such sinful activities. If a human being accepts the punishment that is prescribed by the rules of atonement, he learns for the future. In some cases, however, a punished person commits the same sin for which he had undergone punishment. When there is no longer a propensity for committing further sin, a person desires to be relieved of the reactions for the sins he has committed. If that desire is sincere, then there is no possibility of reviving the propensity to commit sin. But if one is not completely free from sin, then the seed of sin naturally induces one to engage again in sinful activities. As a bankrupt person unable to repay his debts is given a fresh opportunity to repay his debts under a formula prescribed by the judge, the mind of one who is inclined to lead a pious life by giving up desires to commit sinful activities like harming others does not run after sin. Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu excused the previous deeds of that sinful brāhmaṇa and gave him a new life.

Jayapatākā Swami: Haribol! So, this is why Lord Nityānanda is described as patita-pāvana, He is the deliverer of the fallen souls. We find that they have a system in the Roman Catholic church, that they confess their sins. So then they are supposed to be forgiven for their sins, but then they do the sins again. So here, Lord Nityānanda said that He would clean all the karma but he should not do the sinful acts again. That is described in the next verse.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.686

parahiṁsā, ḍākā-curi, saba anācāra
chāḍa giyā ihā tumi, nā kariha āra

Jayapatākā Swami: Give up violence to others, plundering, stealing, and other immoral activities. You should renounce these activities and not do them again.

So, here Lord Nityānanda said, He would forgive him, but he should not do these activities of stealing, etc., anymore.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.687

pāpavṛtti parityāgapūrvaka harināme upadeśa; pāpavṛtti saṁrakṣaṇa pūrvaka harināma-grahaṇera abhinaya nāmāparādha mātra—

dharma-pathe giyā tumi laha hari-nāma
tabe tumi anyere karibā paritrāṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Going on the religious path, you should chant the name of Hari – Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare, Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare! Then you will deliver others as well.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.688

yata saba dasyu-cora ḍākiyā āniyā
dharma-pathe sabāre laoyāo tumi giyā

...and He gave His own flower garland on the neck of the brāhmaṇa dacoit leader.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.690

mahā-jaya-jaya-dhvani haila takana
dvijera haila sarva-bandha-vimocana

Jayapatākā Swami: Great jaya-dhvani, victory call, “Jaya Jaya!” Resounded at that time.

Purport: The brāhmaṇa was freed from all bondage.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Nityānanda had been told by Lord Caitanya that We have descended from the spiritual world to deliver four types of people who normally do not get delivered – the mūrkhas, the foolish; the nīcas, the low born; the patītas, the fallen; and the duḥkhīs, the sad. Anyone before you were a devotee experienced any suffering in the material world? So that’s the duḥkhīs. I qualified in all the four. ? Śrīla Prabhupāda said you give up these patīta activities and take the mercy of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda whose mercy is unlimited. But Lord Nityānanda, He takes the mercy of Lord Caitanya and distributes it. And Śrīla Prabhupāda, he took the mercy from Nitāi-Gaura and he distributed that in the Western world. He was told by his guru to preach in the Western world. But when he was in LA, the Deity Rukmiṇī Dvārakānātha, told Śrīla Prabhupāda, he should also preach in India. Now we have many temples, many devotees in India and people are foolish in the sense that they think they are the body and therefore they miss the actual purpose of human life which is God realization.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.691

viprera krandana o kākuvāda—

kāku kare dvija prabhu-caraṇe dhariyā
krandana karaye bahu ḍākiyāḍākiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: In a most pitiful voice, the brāhmaṇa caught hold of Lord Nityānanda’s lotus feet and crying profusely, he called out loudly again and gain.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.692

ahe prabhu nityānanda pātakī-pāvana!
muñi pātakīre deha’ caraṇe śaraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: O Lord Nityānanda! O deliverer of the sinful! Please give this most sinful person shelter at Your lotus feet!

So, this leader of the dacoits, he was fully surrendering at Lord Nityānanda’s lotus feet. Haribol!

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.693

tomāra hiṁsāya se haila mora mati
muñi pāpiṣṭhera kon loke haibe gati

Jayapatākā Swami: Causing You suffering had become my intention. I, a most sinful person, will attain which planet as my due destination?

So, the brāhmaṇa dacoit leader, he realized that by wishing to harm Lord Nityānanda, and stealing His possessions, he would have to suffer and go to some hellish destination.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.694

viprera mastake nityānandera padasthāpana—

nityānanda prabhuvara—karuṇā-sāgara
pāda-padma dilā tāra mastaka-upara

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda, most merciful of the Lords, an ocean of mercy, placed His lotus feet on that brāhmaṇa’s head.

Lord Nityānanda He was so merciful that goes beyond estimation. This sinful leader of the dacoits, received the mercy of Lord Nityānanda’s lotus feet. Haribol! Haribol!

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.695

caraṇāravinda pāi’ mastake prasāda
brāhmaṇera khaṇḍila sakala aparādha

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda’s lotus feet were obtained on the dacoit leader’s head as mercy, and all of the brāhmaṇa’s offenses were nullified by Lord Nityānanda.

Lord Nityānanda who is described as an ocean of mercy, by placing His lotus feet on the head of the dacoit leader, he nullified all the offences of the sinful brāhmaṇa.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.696

sei dvijera ceṣṭāya coradasyugaṇera pāpavṛtti-parityāga evaṁ caitranyapadāśraya—

sei dvija-dvāre yata cora-dasyu-gaṇa
dharma-pathe āsi’ laila caitanya-śaraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Through that brāhmaṇa, all the thieves and dacoits came to take to the religious path and took shelter of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

So, Lord Nityānanda had ordered the dacoit leader to bring all the dacoits, thieves to take to the religious path and he did that.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.697

pāpavṛtti o anācāra parityāgapūrvaka dasyugaṇera harināma-grahaṇa—

ḍākā curi parahiṁsā chāḍi’ anācāra
sabe lailena ati sādhu vyavahāra

Jayapatākā Swami: These thieves and dacoits gave up thievery, violence to others, and all kinds of immoral activities, all of them took up saintly sādhu behavior.

So, Lord Nityānanda, had all these thieves and fallen people delivered by His mercy.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.698

sabei layena hari-nāma lakṣa lakṣa
sabe hailena viṣṇu-bhakti-yoge dakṣa

Jayapatākā Swami: All of them chanted the name of Lord Hari, hundreds of thousands, and hundreds and thousands of time. They all became expert in devotional service, bhakti-yoga to Lord Viṣṇu.

Purport: There is a difference between devotion to Viṣṇu and devotion to objects other than Viṣṇu. In devotional service to Viṣṇu there is no sense gratification, but in devotion to demigods other than Viṣṇu there is the desire for fulfilling one’s selfish motives. Yet in devotional service to Viṣṇu there are three categories — kṣīṇa (weak), madhyama (medium), and nipuṇa (expert). By chanting the name of Hari, love for Kṛṣṇa is awakened and one becomes qualified to relish the topmost transcendental mellows.

Jayapatākā Swami: In the verse it says they all became expert in the practice of bhakti-yoga. By chanting Harināma one can achieve this expertise and by getting the mercy of Nitāi-Gaura.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.699

kṛṣṇa-preme matta, kṛṣṇa-gāna nirantara
nityānanda-prabhu hena karuṇā-sāgara

Jayapatākā Swami: Mad and intoxicated in kṛṣṇa-prema, love of Kṛṣṇa, they chanted the name of Lord Kṛṣṇa constantly. Lord Nityānanda Prabhu, in this way is an ocean of mercy!

So, normally it is very difficult to achieve pure love for Kṛṣṇa and we don’t see many thieves, rogues, serial killers, mafia, becoming pure devotees, in love of Kṛṣṇa. But by the mercy of Nitāi-Gaura that was possible.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, By Nityānanda’s Mercy the Dacoits are Intoxicated with Love for Kṛṣṇa and Constantly Chant ‘Kṛṣṇa’
