mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.551

dasyugaṇera ākāśakusuma racanā—

dasyu-gaṇa bale,—“sabe śu uka khāiyā
āmarā o vasi’ sabe hānā diba giyā”

Jayapatākā Swami: The dacoits said, “Let them eat and go to sleep. We will wait a while and then raid the house.”

The word hānā means “attacking with cries and shouts.”

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.552

vasilā sakala dasyu eka-vṛkṣa-tale
para dhana laibeka—ei kutūhale

Jayapatākā Swami: All the dacoits sat under a tree, with eagerness that they would take other’s wealth.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.553

keha bale,—“mohāra sonāra tāḍa-bālā”
keha bale,—“muñi nimu mukutāra mālā”

Jayapatākā Swami: Someone said, “I will take His gold bracelets.” Someone else said, “I will take the pearl necklace.”

There were all thieves and all the thieves were aspiring which valuable object they could steal.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.554

keha bale,—“muñi nimu karṇa-ābharaṇa”
“svarṇa-hāra nimu muñi”bale kona jana

Jayapatākā Swami: Someone said, “I will take away His decorated earrings.” Someone else said, “I will take the gold necklace.”

They were all deciding who would take, what! In this way they were meditating on the transcendental form of Lord Nityānanda, they didn’t know that this was purifying them, thinking of Lord Nityānanda’s earrings, necklace on all parts of His body.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.555

keha bale,—“muñi nimu rajata nūpura”
sabe ei mana-kalā khāyena pracura

Jayapatākā Swami: Someone else said, “I will take His silver anklebells.” In this way all of them greatly entertained this desire in their imagination. This is the definition of mana kalā. The phrase mana-kalā means “an object of enjoyment desired in a dream.”

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.556

nityānandera icchāya dasyugaṇera cakṣe nidrāvirbhāva—

henai samaye nityānandera icchāya
nidrā-bhagavatī āsi’ cāpilā sabāya

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time, by the will of Lord Nityānanda, the goddess of sleep came and overcame all of them.

The dacoits were hoping that all the associates of Lord Nityānanda would eat and sleep, meanwhile they were waiting under a tree imagining how they would steal the different ornaments of Lord Nityānanda. Sitting under the tree regardless, the goddess Bhagavathī, of sleep came and overcame them, and all the thieves, dacooits slept.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.557

sei khāne ghumāilā saba dasyu-gaṇa
nidrāya hailā sabe mahā-acetana

Jayapatākā Swami: At that place all the assembled thieves fell asleep. They fell asleep and went into deep unconsciousness.

So, the thieves were hoping that Lord Nityānanda’s associates would eat and fall asleep, meanwhile, they fell asleep!

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.558

prabhura māyāya hena haila mohite
rātri pohāila, tabu nāhika samvita

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord’s illusory potency put them under such illusion that even the night had passed, still they had not awakened.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.559

kākarabe prātaḥkāle dasyagaṇera jāgaraṇa—

kāka-rave jāgilā sakala dasyu-gaṇa
rātri nāhi dekhi’ sabe haila duḥkha-mana

Jayapatākā Swami: The crows cried out, and the assembled thieves woke up. When they saw that the night had passed, they were all unhappy.

Since the night had passed the day light was not appropriate for them to do their thieving. So they felt very sad not being able to steal.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.560

sasambhrame astraśastra guptasthāne rākhiyā gaṅgāsnāne gamana—

āste-vyaste ḍhāla khāṅḍā phelāiyā vane
satvare calilā saba dasyu gaṅgā-snāne

Jayapatākā Swami: They quickly hid their shields and swords in the nearby forest and then all the thieves went to take their bath in the Ganges.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.561

paraspara doṣāropa o caṇḍīra dohāi —

śeṣe saba dasyu-gaṇa nija-sthāne gelā
sabe sabāre gāli pāḍite lāgilā

Jayapatākā Swami: Finally all the dacoits went to their places. All of them were abusing everyone else.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.562

keha bale,—“tui āge ghumāye paḍili”
keha bale,—“tui baḍa jāgiyā āchili”

Jayapatākā Swami: Someone said, “You fell asleep first.” Someone said (sarcastically), “You were wide awake!”

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.563

keha bale,—“kalaha karaha kene āra
lajjā-dharma caṇḍīāji rākhila sabāra”

Jayapatākā Swami: Someone said, “Why are you quarreling? Caṇḍī has saved us today from embarrassment.”

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.564

dasyu-senāpati ye brāhmaṇa durācāra
se balaye,—“kalaha karaha kene āra

Jayapatākā Swami: The commander of all the thieves, who was a misbehaved, sinful brāhmaṇa, he said, “Why quarrel any more?

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.565

ye haila se haila caṇḍīra icchāya
eka dina gele ki sakala dina yāya

Jayapatākā Swami: “Whatever has happened has happened by the will of Caṇḍī. If one day passes like this fruitlessly, is it that all the days will go like this?"

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.566

bujhilāma caṇḍīāji mohilā āpane
vini caṇḍī pūjiyā gelāṅa te-kāraṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: “I understand that today Caṇḍī has personally bewildered us, because we went without first worshiping Caṇḍī, for that reason she bewildered us.

Purport: Another reading for āji (“today”) is āsi (“came”).

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.567

bhāla kari’ āji sabe madya-māṁsa diyā
cala sabe eka ṭhāñi caṇḍī pūji giyā”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Very good, today, we should offer Caṇḍī wine and meat, let us all go together and onetime worship Caṇḍī,”

Purport: Wine and meat are ingredients for the worship of goddess Caṇḍī.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.568

dasyugaṇera madyamāṁsādi-dvārā caṇḍīpūjā—

eteka kariyā yukti saba dasyu-gaṇa
madya-māṁsa diyā sabe karilā pūjana

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, with their reasoning, all the thieves and dacoits, they worshiped Goddess Caṇḍī with wine and meat.
