The following is a Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book Compilation given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on January 6th,2023 in Śrī Dhāma Māyāpur, India.

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram

Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

Phalaśruti- Easily receive ecstatic love for the lotus feet of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa

 

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.72

rāmacandra-purī haya ninduka-svabhāva
tāra bole anna chāḍi’ kibā habe lābha?

Translation: Paramānanda Purī said, “My Godbrother Rāmacandra Purī is by nature a bad critic. If You give up eating because of his words, what will be the profit?

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.73

purīra svabhāva,—yatheṣṭa āhāra karāñā
ye nā khāya, tāre khāoyāya yatana kariyā

Translation: “It is the nature of Rāmacandra Purī that first he lets one eat as much as desired, and if one does not eat more than necessary, with great attention he makes him eat more.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.74

khāoyāñā punaḥ tāre karaye nindana
‘eta anna khāo,—tomāra kata āche dhana?

Translation: “In this way he induces one to eat more than necessary, and then he directly criticizes him, saying, ‘You eat so much. How much money do you have in your treasury?

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Paramananda Puri is explaning the svabhāva, the nature of Rāmacandra Puri - since he is his Godbrother, he can comment.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.75

sannyāsīke eta khāoyāñā kara dharma nāśa!
ataeva jāninu,—tomāra kichu nāhi bhāsa’

Translation: “Also, by inducing sannyāsīs to eat so much, you spoil their religious principles. Therefore I can understand that you have no advancement.’

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.76

ke kaiche vyavahāre, kebā kaiche khāya
ei anusandhāna teṅho karaya sadāya

Translation: “It is Rāmacandra Purī’s business to inquire always about how others are eating and conducting their daily affairs.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Rāmacandra Purī, he likes to criticize others, and was always checking on how others were eating and how they were practicing. In that way he was constantly criticizing others.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.77

hiṁsārtha parera chala vā chidrānveṣaṇa—śāstra-viruddha o niṣiddha —

śāstre yei dui dharma kairāche varjana
sei karma nirantara iṅhāra karaṇa

Translation: “The two kinds of activities rejected in the revealed scriptures constitute his daily affairs.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Rāmacandra Purī's activities are directly forbidden by the śāstras, but that is what he constantly does.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.78

śrīmad-bhāgavate (11.28.1)—

Translation: “One should see that because of the meeting of material nature and the living entity, the universe is acting uniformly. Thus one should neither praise nor criticize the characteristics or activities of others.’

Purport: This verse from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (11.28.1) was spoken by Lord Kṛṣṇa to Uddhava.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, here Lord Kṛṣṇa is saying not to praise nor criticize others, but this activity is being forgotten by Rāmacandra Purī, that’s why they say that he was going against the śāstras.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.79

pūrvavarttī praśaṁsā-vidhi apekṣā paravarttī nindā niṣedharūpa vidhii śāstroddeśya —

tāra madhye pūrva-vidhi ‘praśaṁsā’ chāḍiyā
para-vidhi ‘nindā’ kare ‘baliṣṭha’ jāniyā

Translation: “Of the two rules, Rāmacandra Purī obeys the first by abandoning praise, but although he knows that the second is more prominent, he neglects it by criticizing others.

Purport: The above-mentioned verse from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam gives two injunctions. The first, called pūrva-vidhi, is that one should not praise, and the second, para-vidhi, is that one should not criticize. As will be apparent from the following verse, the injunction against praise is less important than the injunction against blasphemy. One should carefully observe the para-vidhi, although one may neglect the pūrva-vidhi. Thus the actual injunction is that one may praise but should not criticize. This is called śleṣokti, or a statement having two meanings. Rāmacandra Purī, however, acted in just the opposite way, for he neglected the para-vidhi but strictly observed the pūrva-vidhi. Since he avoided following the principle of not criticizing, Rāmacandra Purī broke both the rules.

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīla Prabhupāda advised one should not be like a fly, which looks for the infection in the body, criticizing others. So Rāmacandra Purī, his nature was to criticize everybody and if he could not find anything to criticize with, he would imagine something.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.80

paravidhirai adhikatara gurutva — nyāyavacana :—

purva parayor madhye para-vidhir balavān

Translation: “Between the former rule and the latter rule, the latter is more important.”

Purport:This is a verse from the nyāya literatures.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.81

rāmacandra-purīra makṣikā vṛtti —

yāhāṅ guṇa śata āche, tāhā nā kare grahaṇa
guṇa-madhye chale kare doṣa-āropaṇa

Translation: “Even where there are hundreds of good qualities, a critic does not consider them. Rather, he attempts by some trick to point out a fault in those attributes.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.82

rāmacandrera vyavahāra o svabhāve bhaktagaṇera marmmantuda duḥkha —

iṅhāra svabhāva ihāṅ karite nā yuyāya
tathāpi kahiye kichu marma-duḥkha pāya

Translation: “One should not, therefore, follow the principles of Rāmacandra Purī. Nevertheless, I have to say something against him because he is making our hearts unhappy.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Paramānanda Purī is apologizing for criticizing for Rāmacandra Purī but he is saying that he has to do this because Rāmacandra Purī had made all their hearts sad.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.83

rāmacandra-vākyake tuccha-jñāne prabhuke annagrahaṇe anurodha

iṅhāra vacane kene anna tyāga kara?
pūrvavat nimantraṇa māna’,—sabāra bola dhara”

Translation: “Why have You given up proper eating due to the criticism of Rāmacandra Purī? Please accept invitations as before. This is the request of us all.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Everyone is very sad that Lord Caitanya had cut down His eating and He is become very thin, so they are requesting Him to accept prasāda as before and make all of them happy.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.84

jagadguru lokaśikṣaka prabhukarttṛka yatidharmavidhi-nirṇaya; vidhira atīta īśvara o adhīna baddha-jīve samabuddhikārīi ‘prākṛta-sahajiyā’; ābāra svayaṁ īśvara haiyāo āpanāke vairāgya-vādhya jīvajñāne yativeṣī ācāryake nairapekṣya-śikṣā-dāna :—

prabhu kahe,—“sabe kene purīre kara roṣa?
‘sahaja’ dharma kahe teṅho, tāṅra kibā doṣa?

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu replied, “Why are all of you angry at Rāmacandra Purī? He is expounding the natural principles of sannyāsa life. Why are you accusing him?

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.85

yati hañā jihvā-lāmpaṭya—atyanta anyāya
yatira dharma,—prāṇa rākhite āhāra-mātra khāya”

Translation: “For a sannyāsī to indulge in satisfying the tongue is a great offense. The duty of a sannyāsī is to eat only as much as needed to keep body and soul together.”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.86

bhaktagaṇera āgrahe prabhura arddha-svīkāra —

tabe sabe meli’ prabhure bahu yatna kailā
sabāra āgrahe prabhu ardheka rākhilā

Translation: When they all requested very fervently that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu take a full meal, He still would not do so. Instead, He responded to their request by accepting half as much as usual.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya wanted to practice vairāgya-vidya, so He ate half as much as He usually did, and He was defending Rāmacandra Purī because a sannyāsī should only eat to keep the body and soul together .

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.87

dui-paṇa kauḍi lāge prabhura nimantraṇe
kabhu dui-jana bhoktā, kabhu tina-jane

Translation: The cost for the food needed to invite Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was fixed at two paṇas of kauḍis [160 conchshells], and that food would be taken by two men and sometimes three.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, previously Lord Caitanya would take 320 kauḍis or 4 paṇas and now He was taking 2 paṇas. So after Rāmacandra Purī Mahārāja came, He reduced His eating to half.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.88

abhakta varṇa-brāhmaṇa o pāṅkteya-brāhmaṇera gṛhe prabhura bhikṣā-grahaṇa-rīti-vaiśiṣṭya :—

abhojyānna vipra yadi karena nimantraṇa
prasāda-mūlya la-ite lāge kauḍi dui-paṇa

Translation: When a brāhmaṇa at whose home an invitation could not be accepted invited the Lord, he would pay two paṇas of conchshells to purchase the prasādam.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.89

bhojyānna vipra yadi nimantraṇa kare
kichu ‘prasāda’ āne, kichu pāka kare ghare

Translation: When a brāhmaṇa at whose home an invitation could be accepted invited Him, the brāhmaṇa would purchase part of the prasāda and cook the rest at home.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the system was established whether one could eat the food cooked by the brāhmaṇa. There were some brāhmaṇas who could not cook for the Lord, therefore they had to purchase prasāda from Lord Jagannātha and those who cooked, they would purchase some prasāda from Lord Jagannātha and cook the rest.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā 8.90-91

gadādhara, bhagavān o sārvabhaumera gṛhe bhaktādhīna bhagavānera bhojana—

paṇḍita-gosāñi, bhagavān-ācārya, sārvabhauma
nimantraṇera dine yadi kare nimantraṇa

tāṅ-sabāra icchāya prabhu karena bhojana
tāhāṅ prabhura svātantrya nāi, yaiche tāṅra mana

Translation: Even on a day when Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was invited to dine by others, if Gadādhara Paṇḍita, Bhagavān Ācārya or Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya invited Him, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu had no independence. He would accept their invitations as they desired.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya would take the prasāda offered by His intimate associates even if they did not adhere to His strict rules.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.92

prabhura avatārera uddeśya o vyavahāra rīti :—

bhakta-gaṇe sukha dite prabhura ‘avatāra’
yāhāṅ yaiche yogya, tāhāṅ karena vyavahāra

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu actually descended to give happiness to the devotees. Thus He behaved in whatever way fit the time and circumstances.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya had descended from the spiritual world to give happiness to the devotees, therefore depending on time, place and circumstance He would accept prasāda.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.93

prabhura kakhanao prākṛta jīvera nyāya ācaraṇadvārā vañcanā, kakhanao parameśvararūpe pūrṇakṛpā —

kabhu laukika rīti,—yena ‘itara’ jana
kabhu svatantra, karena ‘aiśvarya’ prakaṭana

Translation: Because of His full independence, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu sometimes behaved like a common man and sometimes manifested His godly opulence.

Jayapatākā Swami: As the Supremely independent Personality of Godhead, Lord Caitanya would sometimes not use His independence and eat like an ordinary man and sometimes He would eat unlimitedly showing his opulence.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.94

kakhanao rāmacandra-purīke laukikī maryādā-dāna, kakhanao tṛṇabat upekṣā—

kabhu rāmacandra-purīra haya bhṛtya-prāya
kabhu tāre nāhi māne, dekhe tṛṇa-prāya

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu sometimes accepted Rāmacandra Purī as His master and considered Himself a servant, and sometimes the Lord, not caring for him, would see him as being just like a straw.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya would relate with Rāmacandra Purī differently at different times.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.95

acintya īśvarera sakala ācaraṇai nitya, śivada o sundara

īśvara-caritra prabhura—buddhira agocara
yabe yei karena, sei saba—manohara

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu behaved exactly like the Supreme Personality of Godhead, beyond the restriction of anyone’s intelligence. He did whatever He liked, but all His activities were very beautiful.

Jayapatākā Swami: No one could speculate what the Lord activities would be because He was fully independent. So, this was being noted by the author Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.96

bhagavadāśraya-parityāgapūrvaka rāmacandrera tīrtha-yātrā:

ei-mata rāmacandra-purī nīlācale
dina kata rahi’ gelā ‘tīrtha’ karibāre

Translation: Thus, Rāmacandra Purī stayed for some days at Nīlācala [Jagannātha Purī]. Then he left to visit various holy places of pilgrimage.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.97

tāhāte bhaktagaṇera hṛdaya-bhāra lāghava o ruddhaśvāsa-mocana—

teṅho gele prabhura gaṇa haila haraṣita
śirera pāthara yena paḍila ācambita

Translation: The devotees considered Rāmacandra Purī to be like a great burden on their heads. When he left Jagannātha Purī, everyone felt extremely happy, as if a great stone burden had suddenly fallen from their heads to the ground.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since the devotees had a strong desire to see Lord Caitanya be served very opulently, but in the presence of Rāmacandra Purī that was not possible, when Rāmacandra Purī left they were extremely happy.

Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.98

prākṛta śuṣka vairāgyavidhi tyāgapūrvaka gauragataprāṇa bhaktagaṇera sarvātmadvārā prabhu-santoṣaṇa :—

svacchande nimantraṇa, prabhura kīrtana-nartana
svacchande karena sabe prasāda bhojana

Translation: After his departure, everything was happy once again. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepted invitations as usual and led congregational chanting and dancing. Everyone else also accepted prasāda without hindrances.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, when Rāmacandra Purī left Nīlācala everyone was relieved and they all took prasāda fully.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.99-100

guru upekṣā karile, aiche phala haya
krame īśvara paryanta aparādhe ṭhekaya

yadyapi guru-buddhye prabhu tāra doṣa nā la-ila
tāra phala-dvārā loke sikṣā karāila 

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu did not consider the offenses of Rāmacandra Purī, for the Lord considered him His spiritual master. However, his character instructed everyone about the result of offending the spiritual master.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, here was a practical example of Rāmacandra Purī Mahārāja offending his guru, thus he became a critic for everyone including the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.101

śravaṇapuṭe caitanya-caritāmṛta-pāna-phale hṛtkarṇa rasāyanatā —

caitanya-caritra—yena amṛtera pūra
śunite śravaṇe mane lāgaye madhura

Translation: The character of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is full of nectar. Hearing about it is pleasing to the ear and mind.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, His pastimes are full of nectar, and one should see how He behaves in different circumstances.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 8.102

caitanya-carita-śravaṇei kṛṣṇa-prema-lābha :—

caitanya-caritra likhi, śuna eka-mane
anāyāse pābe prema śrī-kṛṣṇa-caraṇe

Translation: I write about the character of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. O readers, please hear with attention, for thus you will easily receive ecstatic love for the lotus feet of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa ki Jai ! Haribol! So, by hearing these pastimes and characteristics of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, one can easily achieve ecstatic love for the Lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Phalaśruti- Easily receive ecstatic love for the lotus feet of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa
