mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram

Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees! Today we will continue with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book, Today's chapter is entitled as:

Phalaśruti – Achieve the Treasure of Love for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu
Under the section: The Meeting of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Vallabha Bhaṭṭa

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.138

bhaṭṭakarttṛka prabhuke nimantraṇa:—

bhaṭṭa kahe,—“yadi more ha-ilā prasanna
eka-dina punaḥ mora māna’ nimantraṇa”

Translation: Vallabha Bhaṭṭa Ācārya requested Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, “If You are actually pleased with me, please accept my invitation once again.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Vallabha Bhaṭṭa had fed Lord Caitanya and all His associates but now he wanted to feed Him again as a confirmation that he was forgiven for his offenses and that the Lord was pleased with him.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.139

jīvera prati bhuvanapāvana prabhura ahaitukī kṛpāra nidarśana:—

prabhu avatīrṇa hailā jagat tārite
mānilena nimantraṇa, tāre sukha dite

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who had descended to deliver the entire universe, accepted the invitation of Vallabha Bhaṭṭa just to give him happiness.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepted the invitation of Vallabha Bhaṭṭa to give him happiness and this exchange of love in the form of serving prasāda is very special.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.140

akṣajajñānī abhimānīke daṇḍapradānadvārā uddhāra-sādhana:—

jagatera ‘hita’ ha-uka—ei prabhura mana
daṇḍa kari’ kare tāra hṛdaya śodhana

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is always eager to see everyone in the material world happy. Therefore sometimes He chastises someone just to purify his heart.

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīla A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda would accept invitations, to take prasāda from those who became life-members just to make them happy and Śrīla Prabhupāda was saying there are giving us donations just by eating prasāda.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.141

tadgṛhe sagaṇa prabhura bhikṣā-svīkāra:—

svagaṇa-sahita prabhura nimantraṇa kailā
mahāprabhu tāre tabe prasanna ha-ilā

Translation: When Vallabha Bhaṭṭa invited Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His associates, the Lord was very pleased with him.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu was very pleased with Vallabha Bhaṭṭa, and taking this invitation was a special favor given to Vallabha Bhaṭṭa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.142

satyabhāmāra avatāra jagadānandera vṛttānta-varṇana; tāṅhāra bāmyasvabhāva o śuddha gāḍha gauraprema:—

jagadānanda-paṇḍitera śuddha gāḍha bhāva
satyabhāmā-prāya prema ‘vāmya-svabhāva’

Translation: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita’s pure ecstatic love for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was very deep. It can be compared to the love of Satyabhāmā, who always quarreled with Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, different devotees descended with Lord Caitanya, some were gopīs, some were queens. Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was the incarnation of Satyabhāmā Rāṇī, the second queen in Dvārakā.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.143

jagadānandera prabhusaha praṇaya-kalaha:—

bāra-bāra praṇaya kalaha kare prabhu-sane
anyo-’nye khaṭmaṭi cale dui-jane

Translation: Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was accustomed to provoking loving quarrels with the Lord. There was always some disagreement between them.

Jayapatākā Swami: There are two types of Gopīs and two types of queens, dakṣiṇa, those who are submissive and those who don’t quarrel but the vāma, west wing, have quarrels and they have loving arguments with the Lord.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.144

rukmiṇīra avatāra gadādharera dakṣiṇa-svabhāva o śuddha gāḍha gauraprema:—

gadādhara-paṇḍitera śuddha gāḍha bhāva
rukmiṇī-devīra yaiche ‘dakṣiṇa-svabhāva’

Translation: Gadādhara Paṇḍita’s pure ecstatic love for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was also very deep. It was like that of Rukmiṇīdevī, who was always especially submissive to Kṛṣṇa.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Rukmiṇī is dakṣiṇa, or submissive svabhāva.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.145

prabhura prati gadādharera svābhāvika aiśvaryabhāvamiśra premasnigdha namratāvaśataḥ krodhābhāva:—

tāṅra praṇaya-roṣa dekhite prabhura icchā haya
aiśvarya-jñāne tāṅra roṣa nāhi upajaya

Translation: Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu sometimes desired to see Gadādhara Paṇḍita’s affectionate anger, but because of his knowledge of the Lord’s opulences, his anger was never invoked.

Purport: Joking with Rukmiṇīdevī in Dvārakā, Kṛṣṇa once advised her to accept another husband because He was unfit for her. Rukmiṇīdevī, however, unable to understand His joking words, took them very seriously and immediately fell to the ground in fear of separation from Him. In the pastimes of Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita was always in disagreement with the Lord like Satyabhāmā, whereas Gadādhara Paṇḍita was always awed by the Lord’s opulence and was therefore submissive to the Lord under all circumstances.

Jayapatākā Swami: This purport gives a explanation of the difference between left wing and the right wing consorts.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.146

vallabhaprati prītyupalakṣye vāhye kṛtrima krodha dekhāiyā gadādharera prema parīkṣā; gadādharera bhīti:—

ei lakṣya pāñā prabhu kailā roṣābhāsa
śuni’ paṇḍitera citte upajila trāsa

Translation: For this purpose Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu sometimes showed His apparent anger. Hearing of this anger inspired great fear in the heart of Gadādhara Paṇḍita.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.147

dvāpara-yuge kṛṣṇa o rukmiṇīra dṛṣṭānta:—

pūrve yena kṛṣṇa yadi parihāsa kaila
śuni’ rukmiṇīra mane trāsa upajila

Translation: Previously, in kṛṣṇa-līlā, when Lord Kṛṣṇa joked with Rukmiṇīdevī, she took His words seriously, and fear awoke within her mind.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.148

vallabhabhaṭṭera pūrve vātsalya-rase bhajana:—

vallabha-bhaṭṭera haya vātsalya-upāsana
bāla-gopāla-mantre teṅho karena sevana

Translation: Vallabha Bhaṭṭa was accustomed to worshiping the Lord as child Kṛṣṇa. Therefore he had been initiated into the Bāla-gopāla mantra and was thus worshiping the Lord.

Jayapatākā Swami: Vallabha Bhaṭṭa was in the mood of vātsalya or parental rasa. This rasa is different than the conjugal rasa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.149

gadādharera saṅga-phale madhura rase bhajana-pravṛtti:—

paṇḍitera sane tāra mana phiri’ gela
kiśora-gopāla-upāsanāya mana dila

Translation: In the association of Gadādhara Paṇḍita, his mind was converted, and he dedicated his mind to worshiping Kiśora-gopāla, Kṛṣṇa as a young boy.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Vallabha Bhaṭṭa was worshipping Kṛṣṇa as a young boy, by the association of Gadādhara Paṇḍita.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.150

gadādharera nikaṭa mantralābhecchā, gadādharera asvīkāra:—

paṇḍitera ṭhāñi cāhe mantrādi śikhite
paṇḍita kahe,—“ei karma nahe āmā haite

Translation: Vallabha Bhaṭṭa wanted to be initiated by Gadādhara Paṇḍita, but Gadādhara Paṇḍita refused, saying, “The work of acting as a spiritual master is not possible for me.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Vallabha Bhaṭṭa had been worshipping Bāla-Gopāla but by the association of Gadādhara Paṇḍita he was worshipping Kṛṣṇa as Kiśora but when he wanted to receive a new mantra from Gadādhara Prabhu, he was refused.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.151

gaurāṅgaikagati gadādharera gaura-vaśyatā:—

āmi—paratantra, āmāra prabhu—gauracandra
tāṅra ājñā vinā āmi nā ha-i ‘svatantra’

Translation: “I am completely dependent. My Lord is Gauracandra, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. I cannot do anything independently, without His order.

Jayapatākā Swami: Gadādhara Paṇḍita was completely surrendered to Lord Caitanya, therefore he did not act as his spiritual master without the order of Lord Caitanya

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.152

vallabhake mantradānera viruddhe yukti-pradarśana:—

tumi ye āmāra ṭhāñi kara āgamana
tāhātei prabhu more dena olāhana”

Translation: “My dear Vallabha Bhaṭṭa, your coming to me is not appreciated by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Therefore He sometimes speaks to chastise me.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Whether actually Lord Caitanya approved Vallabha Bhaṭṭa seeing Gadādhara Paṇḍita, is not clear because sometimes He jokingly speaks to Gadādhara Paṇḍita.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 5.153-154

vallabhera prabhukṛpā-lābha:—

ei-mata bhaṭṭera katheka dina gela
śeṣe yadi prabhu tāre suprasanna haila

bhikṣā-divase prabhura kṛtrima-krodhe santrasta gadādharake prabhura sneha-premabhare āhvāna:—

nimantraṇera dine paṇḍite bolāilā
svarūpa, jagadānanda, govinde pāṭhāilā

Translation: Some days passed, and when Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, finally pleased with Vallabha Bhaṭṭa, accepted his invitation, the Lord sent Svarūpa Dāmodara, Jagadānanda Paṇḍita and Govinda to call for Gadādhara Paṇḍita.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.155

paṇḍitake svarūpera sāntvanā-dāna o sarvavṛttānta-jñāpana:—

pathe paṇḍitere svarūpa kahena vacana
“parīkṣite prabhu tomāre kailā upekṣaṇa

Translation: On the way, Svarūpa Dāmodara said to Gadādhara Paṇḍita, “Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu wanted to test you. Therefore He neglected you.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.156

svarūpakarttṛka gadādharake prativādakaraṇārtha uttejanā ceṣṭādvārā parīkṣā:—

tumi kene āsi’ tāṅre nā dilā olāhana?
bhīta-prāya hañā kāṅhe karilā sahana?”

Translation: “Why did you not retaliate by reproaching Him? Why did you fearfully tolerate His criticism?”

Jayapatākā Swami: Since Svarūpa Dāmodara is an avatāra of Lalītā and Lalītā is a left wing gopī, so her nature is to argue with him.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.157

prabhu-premasnigdha paṇḍitera aiśvaryajñānamayī vaśyatā:—

paṇḍita kahena,—prabhu svatantra sarvajña-śiromaṇi
tāṅra sane ‘haṭha’ kari,—bhāla nāhi māni

Translation: Gadādhara Paṇḍita said, “Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is completely independent. He is the topmost omniscient personality. It would not look well for me to talk to Him as if I were His equal.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this reveals the mood of Gadādhara Paṇḍita.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.158

paṇḍitera tatpriyatama prabhura sarvavidha snehatyācāra-sahane svābhāvikī pravṛtti:—

yei kahe, sei sahi nija-śire dhari’
āpane karibena kṛpā guṇa-doṣa vicāri’”

Translation: “I can tolerate whatever He says, bearing it upon my head. He will automatically be merciful to me after considering my faults and attributes.”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.159

eta bali paṇḍita prabhura sthāne āilā
rodana kariya prabhura caraṇe paḍilā

Translation: After saying this, Gadādhara Paṇḍita went to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and fell down crying at the lotus feet of the Lord.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, it’s very interesting, that Gadādhara Paṇḍita, we accept as the avatāra of Rādhārāṇī but Lord Caitanya is Kṛṣṇa with the heart of Rādhārāṇī. Rādhārāṇī is the chief of the left hand gopīs and Rukmiṇī is chief of the right hand queens. It seems that Gadādhara Paṇḍita takes up the mood of Rukmiṇī, when He comes as Rādhārāṇī’s reflection. Rukmini is Radharani's reflection.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.159

paṇḍitera prabhusamīpe āgamana o krandana:—

eta bali’ paṇḍita prabhura sthāne āilā
rodana kariyā prabhura caraṇe paḍilā

Translation: After saying this, Gadādhara Paṇḍita went to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and fell down crying at the lotus feet of the Lord.

Jayapatākā Swami: Here we see how Gadādhara Paṇḍita has so much love for Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.160

paṇḍitera premavaśa prabhura sneha-premabhare gadādharake āliṅgana o āśvāsana:—

īṣat hāsiyā prabhu kailā āliṅgana
sabāre śunāñā kahena madhura vacana

Translation: Smiling slightly, the Lord embraced him and spoke sweet words so that others would also hear.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.161

svayaṁ prabhukarttṛka gadādharera atula snigdha sudṛḍha gauraprema-varṇana:—

“āmi cālāiluṅ tomā, tumi nā calilā
krodhe kichu nā kahilā, sakala sahilā

Translation: “I wanted to agitate you,” the Lord said, “but you did not become agitated. Indeed, you could not say anything in anger. Instead, you tolerated everything.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.162

āmāra bhaṅgīte tomāra mana nā calilā
sudṛḍha sarala-bhāve āmāre kinilā”

Translation: “Your mind was not disturbed by My tricks. Rather, you stayed fixed in your simplicity. In this way you have purchased Me.”

Jayapatākā Swami: These loving exchanges between Lord Caitanya and His devotees are very difficult to understand.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.163

prabhura “gadādhara-prāṇanātha” nāma:—

paṇḍitera bhāva-mudrā kahana nā yāya
‘gadādhara-prāṇa-nātha’ nāma haila yāya

Translation: No one can describe the characteristics and ecstatic love of Gadādhara Paṇḍita. Therefore another name for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is Gadādhara-prāṇanātha, “the life and soul of Gadādhara Paṇḍita.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Gadādhara Paṇḍita has pure love for Lord Caitanya , therefore Lord Caitanya is known as Gadādhara-prāṇanātha, the life and soul of Gadādhara Paṇḍita.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.164

bhaktagaṇera nitya ‘gadāi-gaurāṅga’ nāma-gāna:—

paṇḍite prabhura prasāda kahana nā yāya
‘gadāira gaurāṅga’ bali’ yāṅre loke gāya

Translation: No one can say how merciful the Lord is to Gadādhara Paṇḍita, but people know the Lord as Gadāira Gaurāṅga, “the Lord Gaurāṅga of Gadādhara Paṇḍita.”

Jayapatākā Swami: In Cāṅpāhāṭi there is Gadādhara Gaurāṅga Deities and also Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura in his house he worshipped the Gaura-Gadādhara Deities. But we worship Nitāi-Gaura while we are in preaching mood but Gaura-Gadāi are in the loving mood.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.165

acintya-caitanya-līlā-sindhura prati-taraṅge bahu uddeśya-sampādana:—

caitanya-prabhura līlā ke bujhite pāre?
eka-līlāya vahe gaṅgāra śata śata dhāre

Translation: No one can understand the pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. They are like the Ganges, for hundreds and thousands of branches flow from even one of His activities.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, how Lord Caitanya He would have different relationships with different devotees. In one pastime, simultaneously He was exchanging all these loving exchanges with different devotees.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.166

prabhukarttṛka—(1) paṇḍitera gauraprema pracāra, (2) vallabhera garvanāśa o uddhāra, (3) akṣajajñānī jīvake bāhire upekṣāi tatprati adhokṣaja-kṛpā evaṁ (4) tādṛśa duḥkha-daṇḍake bhagavadanukampā-jñānei jīvera nityamaṅgala o buddhimattā-pracāra:—

paṇḍitera saujanya, brahmaṇyatā-guṇa
dṛḍha prema-mudrā loke karilā khyāpana

Translation: Gadādhara Paṇḍita is celebrated all over the world for his gentle behavior, his brāhmaṇical attributes and his steady love for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: These are the qualities of Gadādhara Paṇḍita, one of the pastimes of the Lord in this pastime was to glorify the pure love of Gadādhara Paṇḍita.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.167

abhimāna-paṅka dhuñā bhaṭṭere śodhilā
sei-dvārā āra saba loke śikhāilā

Translation: The Lord purified Vallabha Bhaṭṭa by cleansing him of the mud of false pride. By such activities the Lord also instructed others.

Jayapatākā Swami: Another aspect of this pastime, I show He cut the false pride of Vallabha Bhaṭṭa by purifying him, and in this way instructed others. Because Vallabha Bhaṭṭa was a great devotee and therefore He used him to give this message.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.168

vāhyadraṣṭā bahirarthamānīrai adhaḥpatana:—

antare ‘anugraha,’ bāhye ‘upekṣāra prāya’
bāhyārtha yei laya, sei nāśa yāya

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was actually always merciful within His heart, but He was sometimes externally negligent of His devotees. We should not be preoccupied with His external feature, however, for if we do so we shall be vanquished.

Jayapatākā Swami: How Lord Caitanya is always merciful in His heart and He would externally sometimes show neglect, this is for another purpose. We should always understand that He is always thinking of the well-being of His devotees

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.169

caitanye acalā bhaktii caitanya-līlā-tattva-jñānera kāraṇa:—

nigūḍha caitanya-līlā bujhite kā’ra śakti?
sei bujhe, gauracandre yāṅra dṛḍha bhakti

Translation: The pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are very deep. Who can understand them? Only one who has firm, deep devotion to His lotus feet can understand these pastimes.

Jayapatākā Swami: If one sees the external aspects of Lord Caitanya's mood he will be vanquished. So one has to understand that the Lord is simultaneously performing many pastimes and that His inner mood is always of great mercy.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.170

gadādharakarttṛka sagaṇa prabhuke bhikṣā-dāna:—

dināntare paṇḍita kaila prabhura nimantraṇa
prabhu tāhāṅ bhikṣā kaila lañā nija-gaṇa

Translation: Another day, Gadādhara Paṇḍita invited Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to dinner. The Lord took prasādam at his home with His personal associates.

Purport: Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura comments that Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu acted as a very merciful well-wisher toward Vallabha Bhaṭṭa by externally neglecting him in many ways to purify him of his false pride in being a learned scholar. The Lord neglected Gadādhara Paṇḍita for a few days because of his associating with Vallabha Bhaṭṭa. Actually He was not at all displeased with Gadādhara Paṇḍita. Indeed, because Gadādhara Paṇḍita is the personal potency of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, there is no chance of the Lord’s being dissatisfied with him. However, a person who is too much attracted to externals cannot understand the deep meaning of these dealings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. If one therefore becomes disrespectful to Gadādhara Paṇḍita, he will surely be vanquished.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya has different reasons for his acting in different ways with different devotees. That is why it is difficult to understand Lord Caitanya because He is performing many things in one pastime.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.171

tathāya gadādharera nikaṭa madhurarase vallabhera kiśora gopālamantre dīkṣā-lābha:—

tāhāṅi vallabha-bhaṭṭa prabhura ājñā laila
paṇḍita-ṭhāñi pūrva-prārthita saba siddhi haila

Translation: There Vallabha Bhaṭṭa took permission from Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and his desire to be initiated by Gadādhara Paṇḍita was thus fulfilled.

Jayapatākā Swami: Vallabha Bhaṭṭa or Vallabha Ācārya took initiation and the Gopāla mantra from Gadādhara Paṇḍita with the blessings of Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 7.172

gadādhara-vallabha-milane gaura-prīti-lābha:—

ei ta’ kahiluṅ vallabha-bhaṭṭera milana
yāhāra śravaṇe pāya gaura-prema-dhana

Translation: I have thus explained the Lord’s meeting with Vallabha Bhaṭṭa. By hearing of this incident, one can achieve the treasure of love for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Haribol! I hope everyone was listening very carefully.

Thus ends the chapter entitled,

Phalaśruti – Achieve the Treasure of Love for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu
