Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees! Today we will continue with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book. Today's chapter is entitled as:

Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī Assures to Bring Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu
Under the section: The Chastisement of Junior Haridāsa

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.31

Woman: O noble husband, what is the third (way of Lord showing His mercy)?

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.33

ei-mata mahāprabhura acintya prabhāva
ebe śuna prabhura yaiche haya ‘āvirbhāva’

Translation: In this way, one should understand the inconceivable potencies of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Now please hear how His appearance [āvirbhāva] takes place.

Jayapatākā Swami: We heard about Lord Caitanya's personal appearance and His appearance in the heart of a pure devotee, that is called āveśa. Now we are going to hear about the āvirbhāva, the third way that Lord Caitanya empowers or appears before the devotees.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.34-35

premākṛṣṭa prabhura ‘nitya-āvirbhāvera’ sthānacatuṣṭayaḥ—

śacīra mandire, āra nityānanda-nartane
śrīvāsa-kīrtane, āra rāghava-bhavane

ei cāri ṭhāñi prabhura sadā ‘āvirbhāva’
premākṛṣṭa haya,—prabhura sahaja svabhāva

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu always appeared in four places — in the household temple of mother Śacī, in the places where Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu danced, in the house of Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita during congregational chanting, and in the house of Rāghava Paṇḍita. He appeared because of His attraction to the love of His devotees. That is His natural characteristic.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, these four places Lord Caitanya was always present although invisible He was present as in āvirbhāva. Some fortunate devotees could see Him.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.36

kadācit ‘āvirbhāvera’ dṛṣṭānta; pradyumna vā nṛsiṃha brahmacārīra vṛttānta- varṇanaḥ—

nṛsiṁhānandera āge āvirbhūta hañā
bhojana karilā, tāhā śuna mana diyā

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu appeared before Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī and ate his offerings. Please hear about this with attention.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.32

Man: The third way is when the Lord appears merely by the thought. Please listen. Once, Śivānanda’s nephew Śrīkānta went first and alone to Puruṣottama-kṣetra, where he saw the feet of Lord Caitanya. At that time, in the company of Paramānanda Purī, Svarūpa Dāmodara and the other devotees, Lord Caitanya, the only friend of the entire world, amusingly said to Śrīkānta: “Please tell the merciful Advaita Ācārya and the other devotees they should not come to see Me this year. Tell your uncle Śivānanda that I will come to see him in the month of Pauṣa (December). Jagadānanda is there and he will give Me offerings of food.” When Śrīkānta repeated the Lord’s orders to them, Advaita Ācārya and all the other devotees slackened the arrangement to travel to see the Lord. “This is needed and that is needed” thus Śivānanda attentively gathered vāstuka śāka, moca, and other ingredients for cooking the Lord’s favorite foods, since the Lord desired to arrive.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, before Lord Caitanya's appearance they are gathering all the favorite foods of Lord Caitanya. The readers may learn these preparations as these are favorite of Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.33

Woman: Then? Then?

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.37

śrī-kāntasenera kathā; prabhu-darśanārtha tāṅhāra ekākī śrīkṣetre gamanaḥ—

śivānandera bhāginā śrīkānta-sena nāma
prabhura kṛpāte teṅho baḍa bhāgyavān

Translation: Śivānanda Sena had a nephew named Śrīkānta Sena, who by the grace of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was extremely fortunate.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.38

eka vatsara teṅho prathama ekeśvara
prabhu dekhibāre āilā utkaṇṭhā-antara

Translation: One year, Śrīkānta Sena came alone to Jagannātha Purī in great eagerness to see the Lord.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.39

tatprati prabhura kṛpā o ādeśaḥ—

mahāprabhu tāre dekhi’ baḍa kṛpā kailā
māsa-dui teṅho prabhura nikaṭe rahilā

Translation: Seeing Śrīkānta Sena, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu bestowed causeless mercy upon him. Śrīkānta Sena stayed near Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu for about two months at Jagannātha Purī.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Śrīkānta Sena got the special mercy to be with the Lord for two months. It is a very rare blessing and the mercy of Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.40

gauḍīya bhaktagaṇake purī āsite niṣedhājñā :—

tabe prabhu tāṅre ājñā kailā gauḍe yāite
“bhakta-gaṇe niṣedhiha ethāke āsite

Translation: When he was about to return to Bengal, the Lord told him, “Forbid the devotees of Bengal to come to Jagannātha Purī this year.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.41

pauṣamāse svayaṁ gauḍe yāibāra aṅgīkāraḥ—

e-vatsara tāṅhā āmi yāimu āpane
tāhāi milimu saba advaitādi sane

Translation: “This year I shall personally go to Bengal and meet all the devotees there, headed by Advaita Ācārya.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the devotees would every year go before the Ratha-yātrā to Jagannātha Purī. But this year Lord Caitanya forbade them saying that He would go in the winter, and He sent that message through Śrīkānta Sena, the nephew of Śivānanda Sena.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.42

śivānande kahiha,—āmi ei pauṣa-māse
ācambite avaśya āmi yāiba tāṅra pāśe

Translation: “Please inform Śivānanda Sena that in the month of Pauṣa [December-January] I shall certainly go to his home.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.43

jagadānanda haya tāhāṅ, teṅho bhikṣā dibe
sabāre kahiha,—e vatsara keha nā āsibe”

Translation: “Jagadānanda is there, and he will give Me offerings of food. Inform them all that no one should come to Jagannātha Purī this year.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya was sending this message to Bengal, He was saying how Jagadānanda would cook for Him and how He would visit the house of Śivānanda Sena and how He would see Advaita Ācārya and others, and this was very wonderful for the devotees

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.44

gauḍe āsiyā śrīkāntera prabhu-ājñā-jñāpana, bhaktagaṇera sānande gauḍe avasthānaḥ—

śrīkānta āsiyā gauḍe sandeśa kahili
śuni’ bhakta-gaṇa-mane ānanda ha-ila

Translation: When Śrīkānta Sena returned to Bengal and delivered this message, the minds of all the devotees were very pleased.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, normally not everyone can go to Purī, some would regularly go. But when Lord Caitanya came to Bengal, everybody would be able to see Him, so the devotees became very pleased.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.45

śivānanda o jagadānandera pratyaha prabhu-pratīkṣāḥ—

calitechilā ācārya, rahilā sthira hañā
śivānanda, jagadānanda rahe pratyāśā kariyā

Translation: Advaita Ācārya was just about to go to Jagannātha Purī with the other devotees, but upon hearing this message, He waited. Śivānanda Sena and Jagadānanda also stayed back, awaiting the arrival of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.46

Jayapatākā Swami: So, all the devotees were on the verge of departing to Jagannath Purī but hearing the message of Lord Caitanya they waited.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.46

pauṣa-māse āila duṅhe sāmagrī kariyā
sandhyā-paryanta rahe apekṣā kariyā

Translation: When the month of Pauṣa arrived, Jagadānanda and Śivānanda collected all kinds of paraphernalia for the Lord’s reception. Every day, they would wait until evening for the Lord to come.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, they were waiting for the Lord to arrive in the month of Pauṣa, but Lord Caitanya did not appear.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.47

prabhura āgamanābhāve ubhayera duḥkhaḥ—

ei-mata māsa gela, gosāñi nā āilā
jagadānanda, śivānanda duḥkhita ha-ilā

Translation: As the month passed but Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu did not come, Jagadānanda and Śivānanda became most unhappy.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.48-49

pradyumna brahmacārīra āgamana o duḥkhakāraṇa jijñāsāḥ—

ācambite nṛsiṁhānanda tāhāṅi āilā
duṅhe tāṅre mili’ tabe sthāne vasāilā

duṅhe duḥkhī dekhi’ tabe kahe nṛsiṁhānanda
‘tomā duṅhākāre kene dekhi nirānanda?’

Translation: Suddenly Nṛsiṁhānanda arrived, and Jagadānanda and Śivānanda arranged for him to sit near them. Seeing them both so unhappy, Nṛsiṁhānanda inquired, “Why do I see that you are both despondent?”

Jayapatākā Swami: They were so happy to receive the Lord and then He did not come, so they felt very sad.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.50

śivānandera sarvavṛttānta-jñāpanaḥ—

tabe śivānanda tāṅre sakala kahilā
‘āsiba ājñā dilā prabhu kene nā āilā?’

Translation: Then Śivānanda Sena told him, “Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu promised that He would come. Why, then, has He not arrived?”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.51

pradyumnakarttṛka āśvāsa vā prabodha-dānaḥ—

śuni’ brahmacārī kahe,—‘karaha santoṣe
āmi ta’ āniba tāṅre tṛtīya divase’

Translation: Hearing this, Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī replied, “Please be satisfied. I assure you that I shall bring Him here three days from now.”

Haribol!

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.52

śivānanda o jagadānanda, ubhayera viśvāsaḥ—

tāṅhāra prabhāva-prema jāne dui-jane
ānibe prabhure ebe niścaya kailā mane

Translation: Śivānanda and Jagadānanda knew of Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī’s influence and love of Godhead. Therefore they now felt assured that he would certainly bring Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.53

‘nṛsiṃhānanda’-nāma prāptira kāraṇaḥ—

‘pradyumna brahmacārī’—tāṅra nija-nāma
‘nṛsiṁhānanda’ nāma tāṅra kailā gaura-dhāma

Translation: His real name was Pradyumna Brahmacārī. The name Nṛsiṁhānanda had been given to him by Lord Gaurasundara Himself.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Pradyumna Brahmacārī was given the name Nṛsiṁhānanda by Lord Caitanya Himself so therefore Śivānanda Sena and Jagdānanda felt assured that he had the power to bring Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.34

Man: When the appointed time came, by the arrangement of providence the Lord was staying on the bank of the Godāvarī River with Rāmānanda Rāya on whose insistence, the Lord was not able to leave (though he wished to leave).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.35

Woman: Then? Then?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.36

Man: There is a great yogī named Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī, who is like Lord Nṛsiṁha Himself, who had been named Pradyumna Brahmacārī, but because of his perfect worship of Lord Nṛsiṁha, he was given the name “Nṛsiṁhānanda” by Lord Caitanya Himself. At that time Śivānanda went to Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī and said: “O Master, although Lord Caitanya promised, ‘I will come to visit’, He has not come. When I see the vāstuka śāka and moca my heart becomes filled with grief.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, they made all these favorite prearations for the Lord. They saw the ingredients, but the Lord was not there to take them, they felt very sad.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.37

Woman: Then? Then?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.37½

Man: Then Nṛsiṁhānanda said: “Please wait patiently. In two days, I will being Him here.” Aware of Nṛsiṁhānanda’s influence, Śivānanda believed him. From that time Nṛsiṁhānanda, who was very pleasing to Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, became absorbed in meditation on Lord Caitanya. After two days he called for Śivānanda and said to him: “I have now brought Lord Caitanya to Rāghava Paṇḍita’s home. Tomorrow morning, He will come here. I will personally cook for Him. Please give me all kinds of cooking ingredients. Hearing this, Śivānanda gave him all kinds of cooking ingredients.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.54

prabhuke prakaṭita karite pradyumna brahmacārīra pratijñā o bhogarandhanodyogaḥ—

“pāṇihāṭi grāme āmi prabhure ānila

Translation: After meditating for two days, Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī told Śivānanda Sena, “I have already brought Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to the village known as Pāṇihāṭi.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, we have heard that the house of Rāghava Paṇḍita in Pānihāṭi is one of the places that Lord Caitanya resides as āvirbhāva.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.55

kāli madhyāhne teṅho āsibena tomāra ghare

niścaya kahilāṅa, kichu sandeha nā kara

Translation: “In this way I shall bring Him here very soon. Be assured that I am telling you the truth. Do not be doubtful.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the devotees are very much anxious of the Lord's not arriving, but being assured by Nṛsiṁhānanda, they felt happy

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.57

ye cāhiye, tāhā kara hañā tatpara
ati tvarāya kariba pāka, śuna ataḥpara

Translation: “Bring all the ingredients very soon, for I want to begin cooking immediately. Please do what I say.”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.58

pāka-sāmagrī ānaha, āmi yāhā cāi’
ye māgila, śivānanda āni’ dilā tāi

Translation: Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī said to Śivānanda, “Please bring whatever cooking ingredients I want.” Thus Śivānanda Sena immediately brought whatever he asked for.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya's appearance is something very wonderful and everyone is eager to know how He is coming and they helped Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī to cook all the preparations for Lord Caitanya. This is a big mystery, what is going to happen?! Haribol! Haribol!

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī Assures to Bring Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu
