Text 61

Translation: Year after year at the time of Ratha-yātrā, the great devotees would travel from Bengal to see His lotus feet, which are worshiped by Brahmā and Śiva. Attaining great satisfaction at heart, they then left Orissa. I meditate on Him, the king of sannyāsīs, and the supreme friend of the Bengali devotees.

Jayapatākā Swami: Haribol! All Glories to Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Lord Caitanya has appeared in disguise as a channa-avatāra, as a disguised avatāra. He is actually Kṛṣṇa Himself but He appears in Kali-yuga as a devotee.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.1

chayarūpe vilāsakārī sāvaraṇa śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya-mahāprabhura o sevārata preṣṭhāli-pariveṣṭita śrī-rādhā-kṛṣṇera praṇāmaḥ

vande ’haṁ śrī-guroḥ śrī-yuta-pada-kamalaṁ śrī-gurūn vaiṣṇavāṁś ca
śrī-rūpaṁ sāgrajātaṁ saha-gaṇa-raghunāthānvitaṁ taṁ sa-jīvam
sādvaitaṁ sāvadhūtaṁ parijana-sahitaṁ kṛṣṇa-caitanya-devaṁ
śrī-rādhā-kṛṣṇa-pādān saha-gaṇa-lalitā-śrī-viśākhānvitāṁś ca

Translation: I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master and of all the other preceptors on the path of devotional service. I offer my respectful obeisances unto all the Vaiṣṇavas and unto the six Gosvāmīs, including Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī, Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī, Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī, Jīva Gosvāmī and their associates. I offer my respectful obeisances unto Śrī Advaita Ācārya Prabhu, Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and all His devotees, headed by Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura. I then offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa, Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and all the gopīs, headed by Lalitā and Viśākhā.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, here the maṅgalācaraṇa is stated by Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.1

(Enter a kinnara couple)

The Man: Beloved, this year Lord Jagannātha’s Guṇḍicā festival was more charming than any year before.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.2

The Woman: How is that?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.3

Man: It has become greatly charming, because this year Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, who is personified bliss, who is golden in complexion as the golden mountain, who wears the garments of the greatest sannyāsī, and who is the incarnation as a devotee, has made this festival sweet.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.4

Woman: Alas! Alas! Why didn’t you take me with you? I didn’t see the festival.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.5

Man: Beloved, next year you will see.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.6

Woman: If only it becomes like this next year.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.7

Man: From now on He (Śrī Caitanya) will stay here (in Jagannātha Purī).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.8

Woman: What is the certainty?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.9

Man: I know the truth.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.10

Woman: How do you know?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.11

Man: By listening to the mutual conversations of His associates who know all about His pastimes and who were praising his wonderful pastimes.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.12

Woman: How was the talk?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.13

Man: Beloved, listen.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.14

Woman: What three ways?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.15

Man: First, by direct appearance. Second by entering other's heart. Third by appearing simply by thinking.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.16

Woman: Tell it by explaining in detail?

Jayapatākā Swami: So, here the fact that Lord Caitanya He may enter someone's heart and that person becomes Lord Caitanya's non-different expansion.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.3

tinaprakāre prabhura jīvoddhāraḥ

sarva-loka uddhārite gaura-avatāra
nistārera hetu tāra trividha prakāra

Translation: In His incarnation as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa descended to deliver all the living beings in the three worlds, from Brahmaloka down to Pātālaloka. He caused their deliverance in three ways.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.4

(1) sākṣād-darśana, (2) yogyajīve āveśa o (3) āvirbhāvaḥ

sākṣāt-darśana, āra yogya-bhakta-jīve
‘āveśa’ karaye kāhāṅ, kāhāṅ ‘āvirbhāve’

Translation: The Lord delivered the fallen souls in some places by meeting them directly, in other places by empowering a pure devotee, and in still other places by appearing before someone Himself.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya is appearing by His personal appearance by His āveśa coming through some pure devotee and by āvirbhāvaḥ by His suddenly appearing before someone.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.22

Translation: The philosopher Bhagavān Ācārya is so eager to see the Lord that he vowed to stay his whole life in Puruṣottama-kṣetra. In this way, they have obtained the direct mercy of the Lord. For those unable to come here (to Puruṣottama-kṣetra) to see Him, the Lord gives His mercy by personally entering other’s hearts. In this way, the Lord has entered the hearts of Advaita Ācārya, Nakula Brahmacārī and others also.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, how Lord Caitanya enters the heart of others is described here.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.23

Woman: Tell me something about it.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.24

Man: The story of the Lord entering Advaita Ācārya's heart is very long and and its description will take a very long time. Listen, about how the Lord entered Nakula Brahmacārī's heart.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.25

Woman: Tell. I am listening.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.5-6

trividha prākaṭya-varṇanaḥ—
‘sākṣāt-darśane’ prāya saba nistārilā
nakula-brahmacārīra dehe ‘āviṣṭa’ ha-ilā

īśvarera svabhāva : —
pradyumna-nṛsiṁhānanda āge kailā ‘āvirbhāva’
‘loka nistāriba’,—ei īśvara-svabhāva

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu delivered almost all the fallen souls by directly meeting them. He delivered others by entering the bodies of great devotees, such as Nakula Brahmacārī. And He delivered still others by appearing before them, as in the case of Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī. “I shall deliver the fallen souls.” This statement characterizes the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Purport: By His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupāda The Lord always manifested His āvirbhāva appearance in the following four places: (1) the house of Śrīmatī Śacīmātā, (2) wherever Nityānanda Prabhu danced in ecstasy, (3) the house of Śrīvāsa (when kīrtana was performed), and (4) the house of Rāghava Paṇḍita. Lord Caitanya Himself appeared in these four places. (In this connection, one may consult text 34.)

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya will appear at these places described above and this is not comprehensive but these four places are very prominent.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.7

trividha prākaṭyera phala varṇana; prabhura ‘sākṣād-darśanera’phalaḥ—

sākṣāt-darśane saba jagat tārilā
eka-bāra ye dekhilā, se kṛtārtha ha-ilā

Translation: When Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was personally present, anyone in the world who met Him even once was fully satisfied and became spiritually advanced.

Jayapatākā Swami: So great was the effect of meeting Lord Caitanya even once and when He went to South India, He saw people on the road and would sometimes embrace them and gave them love for Kṛṣṇa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.8

gauḍa-deśera bhakta-gaṇa pratyabda āsiyā
punaḥ gauḍa-deśe yāya prabhure miliyā

Translation: Every year, devotees from Bengal would go to Jagannātha Purī to meet Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and after the meeting they would return to Bengal.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, these devotees from Bengal would meet the Lord and become empowered and go back to Bengal and in this way they would deliver all the people.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.17

Man: The Lord directly appears before the pilgrims who are able to come to Puruṣottama-kṣetra. Each year many thousands of pilgrims, more than anyone has ever seen or heard of before, cross from many different countries have come, more eager to see Lord Kṛṣṇa Caitanya then they are to see Lord Jagannātha Himself.

Jayapatākā Swami: Hari bol!

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.18

Woman: Then? Then?

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.9

āra nānā-deśera loka āsi’ jagannātha
caitanya-caraṇa dekhi’ ha-ila kṛtārtha

Translation: Similarly, people who went to Jagannātha Purī from various provinces of India were fully satisfied after seeing the lotus feet of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, people may have gone to Jagannātha Purī in order to see the Ratha Yātrā festival and thus have the darśana of Lord Jagannātha and when they saw Lord Caitanya dancing in ecstasy they were fully satisfied and they became very advanced in devotional service.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.19

Man: Among all these people the Gauḍīyas (pilgrims from Bengal) are dear to the Lord whom I have seen. These Gauḍīyas who are especially dear to Him are very fortunate even if they have not seen Him. These devotees are:

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.20

Translation: Devotees headed by Narahari, Raghunandana, and the other residents of Khaṇḍa-grama are very fortunate. Although at first they did not see the Lord, eventually they were able to come to Puruṣottama-kṣetra every autumn.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.21

Translation: The inhabitants of Kulīna-grāma, successors of Guṇarāja Khān, and all these beginning with Rāmānanda Vasu, are well-wishing friends of the Lord. And Nyāyācārya and the other wise devotees thriving with the mellow of love, come to Puruṣottama-kṣetra every autumn.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.10

sapta-dvīpera loka āra nava-khaṇḍa-vāsī
deva, gandharva, kinnara manuṣya-veśe āsi’

Translation: People from all over the universe, including the seven islands, the nine khaṇḍas, the planets of the demigods, Gandharvaloka and Kinnaraloka, would go there in the forms of human beings.

Purport: By His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupāda For an explanation of sapta-dvīpa, see Madhya-līlā, chapter twenty, verse 218, and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Fifth Canto, chapters sixteen and twenty. In the Siddhānta-śiromaṇi, chapter one (Golādhyāya), in the Bhuvana-kośa section, the nine khaṇḍas are mentioned as follows:

“Within Bhārata-varṣa, there are nine khaṇḍas. They are known as (1) Aindra, (2) Kaśeru, (3) Tāmraparṇa, (4) Gabhastimat, (5) Kumārikā, (6) Nāga, (7) Saumya, (8) Vāruṇa and (9) Gāndharva.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this shows how wise people from all over the universe came to see Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu and in this way we may wonder, how the Lord would deliver all the residents of universe. But we can see that they came from different parts of the universe knowing that the Lord had appeared in this planet. So, they wanted to take the blessing of seeing the Lord.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.11

prabhure dekhiyā yāya ‘vaiṣṇava’ hañā
kṛṣṇa bali’ nāce saba premāviṣṭa hañā

Translation: Having seen the Lord, they all became Vaiṣṇavas. Thus in ecstatic love of Godhead they chanted the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra and danced.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, in this way the saṅkīrtana movement is spread all over the universe in different planets simply by the presence of Lord Caitanya on this planet.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.12

prabhura āveśera hetu, deśa, kāla o pātra-vaiśiṣṭya varṇana :—

ei-mata darśane trijagat nistāri
ye keha āsite nāre aneka saṁsārī

Translation: Thus by direct meetings, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu delivered the three worlds. Some people, however, were entangled in material activities and could not go.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the residents from all over the universe came and saw Lord Caitanya and thus they became Vaiṣṇavas. But what about those who could not come? Lord Caitanya had also plans for their deliverance.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.13

tā-sabā tārite prabhu sei saba deśe
yogya-bhakta jīva-dehe karena ’āveśe’

Translation: To deliver people in regions throughout the universe who could not meet Him, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu personally entered the bodies of pure devotees.

Jayapatākā Swami: Hari bol!

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.14

āveśera phalaḥ—

sei jīve nija-bhakti karena prakāśe
tāhāra darśane ‘vaiṣṇava’ haya sarva-deśe

Translation: Thus He empowered living beings [His pure devotees] by manifesting in them so much of His own devotion that people in all other countries became devotees by seeing them.

Purport:By His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupāda As stated in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Antya 7.11):

kali-kālera dharma—kṛṣṇa-nāma-saṅkīrtana
kṛṣṇa-śakti vinā nahe tāra pravartana

Unless one is empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, one cannot spread the holy names of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra throughout the world. Persons who do so are empowered. Therefore they are sometimes called āveśa-avatāras, or empowered incarnations, for they are endowed with the power of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada inspired people all over the world by his devotion and so authorities have said that Lord Caitanya had entered into him and empowered him with His devotion. Anyway, in this way, by seeing him, people from different countries became Vaiṣṇavas.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.15

ei-mata āveśe tārila tribhuvana
gauḍe yaiche āveśa, kari dig-daraśana

Translation: In this way Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu delivered the entire three worlds, not only by His personal presence but also by empowering others. I shall briefly describe how He empowered a living being in Bengal.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, an example is being given but Lord Caitanya may empower anyone, and that’s a wonderful thing how His movement has spread not only by His personal appearance but by His empowering some pure devotees.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.26

Woman: Then? Then?

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.16

‘āveśera’ dṛṣṭānta-nakula brahmacārīte prabhura ‘āveśa’ o tāṅhāra avasthā varṇanaḥ—

āmbuyā-muluke haya nakula-brahmacārī
parama-vaiṣṇava teṅho baḍa adhikārī

Translation: In Āmbuyā-muluka there was a person named Nakula Brahmacārī, who was a perfectly pure devotee, greatly advanced in devotional service.

Purport:By His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupāda Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says that Āmbuyā-muluka is the present Ambikā, a city in the Burdwan district of West Bengal. Formerly, during the Muslim regime, it was known as Āmbuyā-muluka. In this city there is a neighborhood called Pyārīgañja, and that is where Nakula Brahmacārī used to live.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this is telling the story how Nakula Brahmacārī was Lord Caitanya's āveśa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.17

gauḍa-deśera loka nistārite mana haila
nakula-hṛdaye prabhu ‘āveśa’ karila

Translation: Desiring to deliver all the people of Bengal, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu entered the heart of Nakula Brahmacārī.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya He can enter the heart of any pure devotee, He wants to deliver the people of His country, deśa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.18

graha-grasta-prāya nakula premāviṣṭa hañā
hāse, kānde, nāce, gāya unmatta hañā

Translation: Nakula Brahmacārī became exactly like a man haunted by a ghost. Thus he sometimes laughed, sometimes cried, sometimes danced and sometimes chanted like a madman.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.19

aśru, kampa, stambha, sveda, sāttvika vikāra
nirantara preme nṛtya, saghana huṅkāra

Translation: He continuously exhibited bodily transformations of transcendental love. Thus he cried, trembled, became stunned, perspired, danced in love of Godhead and made sounds like those of a cloud.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.20

taiche gaura-kānti, taiche sadā premāveśa
tāhā dekhibāre āise sarva gauḍa-deśa

Translation: His body shone with the same luster as that of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and he showed the same absorption in ecstatic love of Godhead. People came from all provinces of Bengal to see these symptoms.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Nakula Brahmacārī manifested these ecstatic symptoms, which were previously manifested by Lord Caitanya and people would come just to see his ecstatic bhakti.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 2.21

brahmacārīra upadeśa :—

yāre dekhe tāre kahe,—‘kaha kṛṣṇa-nāma’
tāṅhāra darśane loka haya premoddāma

Translation: He advised whomever he met to chant the holy names Hare Kṛṣṇa. Thus, upon seeing him, people were overwhelmed with love of Godhead.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, in this way Lord Caitanya was delivering the people of Bengal through Nakula Brahmacārī.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.28

Man: After that, the body of Nakula Brahmacārī shone with the same golden luster as that of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and all the directions became yellowish. The activities of the external senses of Nakula Brahmacārī ceased to function because of his being overwhelmed by relishing the happiness. Children, youth and old numbering millions and millions thronged and they all affectionately worshiped Nakula Brahmacārī.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 9.29

Woman: Then? Then?

Jayapatākā Swami: So, we can see Lord Caitanya desires to deliver all the people of the universe and we can see how He is delivering the people of Bengal through Nakula Brahmacārī and through His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda He delivered people all over the world and like this, who knows how the Lord is delivering people all over the universe?

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Nakula Brahmacārī is Empowered With Specific Spiritual Potencies
Under the section: The Chastisement of Junior Haridāsa
