Introduction: Today is the compilation of Caitanya līlā book, the chapter today is entitled:

Three Principal Forms of Bhagavān – 3. Āveśa [+2.tad-ekātma-rūpa – b.svāṁsa (Personal Expansions) - 6. śaktyāveśa avatāra]

Under the section: Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Instructs Sanātana Gosvāmī in the Science of the Absolute Truth

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.367

kṛṣṇera ṣaḍ-vidha vilāsera o trividha rūpera anyatama

(c) śaktyāveśāvatāra-varṇana –

śaktyāveśāvatāra kṛṣṇera asaṅkhya gaṇana
dig-daraśana kari mukhya mukhya jana

Translation: “There are unlimited śaktyāveśa-avatāras of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Let Me describe the chief among them.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Kṛṣṇa may empower the living entity thus they become a śaktyāveśa-avatāra. And in this way the jīva he can do some great things for the Lord, because he is empowered by Kṛṣṇa. Actually, Lord Caitanya said that unless Kṛṣṇa empowers someone, he cannot spread the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. So, we can see that those who are empowered by Kṛṣṇa they can spread the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement all over the world.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.368

dvividha śaktyāveśa—sākṣātśaktyāviṣṭa mukhya - ‘avatāra’ o śaktyābhāsāviṣṭa gauṇa - ‘vibhūti’ saṁjñā —

śaktyāveśa dui-rūpa—‘mukhya’, ‘gauṇa’ dekhi
sākṣāt-śaktye ‘avatāra’, ābhāse ‘vibhūti’ likhi

Translation: “Empowered incarnations are of two types — primary and secondary. The primary ones are directly empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead and are called incarnations. The secondary ones are indirectly empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead and are called vibhūti.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.369

(1) mukhyāveśāvatāragaṇera nāma –

‘sanakādi’, ‘nārada’, ‘pṛthu’ ‘paraśurāma’
jīva-rūpa ‘brahmāra’ āveśāvatāra-nāma

Translation: “Some śaktyāveśa-avatāras are the four Kumāras, Nārada, Mahārāja Pṛthu and Paraśurāma. When a living being is empowered to act as Lord Brahmā, he is also considered a śaktyāveśa-avatāra.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, these are the primary śaktyāveśa-avatāras empowered by the Lord personally.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.370

vaikuṇṭhe ‘śeṣa’—dharā dharaye ‘ananta’
ei mukhyāveśāvatāra—vistāre nāhi anta

Translation: “Lord Śeṣa in the spiritual world of Vaikuṇṭha and, in the material world, Lord Ananta, who carries innumerable planets on His hoods, are two primary empowered incarnations. There is no need to count the others, for they are unlimited.

Jayapatākā Swami: The persons empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead are unlimited therefore it is not possible to count all of  them.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.371

mukhya-śaktibhede mukhyāveśāvatāragaṇa –

sanakādye ‘jñāna’-śakti, nārade śakti ‘bhakti’
brahmāya ‘sṛṣṭi’-śakti, anante ‘bhū-dhāraṇa’-śakti

Translation: “The power of knowledge was invested in the four Kumāras, and the power of devotional service was invested in Nārada. The power of creation was invested in Lord Brahmā, and the power to carry innumerable planets was invested in Lord Ananta.

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord empowers living entities with some specific capacity, here the details of some of these is mentioned.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.372

śeṣe ‘sva-sevana’-śakti, pṛthute ‘pālana’
paraśurāme ‘duṣṭa-nāśaka-vīrya-sañcāraṇa’

Translation: “The Supreme Personality of Godhead invested the power of personal service in Lord Śeṣa, and He invested the power to rule the earth in King Pṛthu. Lord Paraśurāma received the power to kill rogues and miscreants.

Purport: Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā (4.8), paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām. Sometimes the Lord invests His power to rule in a king like Pṛthu and enables such a king to kill rogues and miscreants. He also invests His power in incarnations like Paraśurāma.

Jayapatākā Swami: The kṣatriyas stopped listening to brāhmaṇas and in this way became miscreants and misbehaved. So Paraśurāma was empowered to kill these rogue kṣatriyas.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.373

āveśāvatārera saṁjñā —
Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛte
(1.1.18)
āveśaprakaraṇe —

jñāna-śakty-ādi-kalayā
yatrāviṣṭo janārdanaḥ
ta āveśā nigadyante
jīvā eva mahattamāḥ

Translation: “‘Whenever the Lord is present in someone by portions of His various potencies, the living entity representing the Lord is called a śaktyāveśa-avatāra — that is, an incarnation invested with special power.’

Purport: This verse is found in the Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛta (1.18).

Jayapatākā Swami: So, we see that the śaktyāveśa-avatāras  has some particular ability invested in him by the Lord, but Kṛṣṇa and His expansions have all the abilities and all His activities but a śaktyāveśa-avatāras is simply empowered in one area or in limited areas.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.374

(2) gītāya vibhūtira varṇana —

‘vibhūti’ kahiye yaiche gītā-ekādaśe
jagat vyāpila kṛṣṇa-śakty-ābhāsāveśe

Translation: “As explained in the eleventh chapter of the Bhagavad-gītā, Kṛṣṇa has spread Himself all over the universe in many personalities through specific powers, known as vibhūti.

Purport: The expansion of specific māyā powers is explained in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (2.7.39).

Jayapatākā Swami: So, if anyone has got exceptional qualities, it can be understood that he received this from the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.375

Śrīmad-Bhagavad-gītāya (10.41-42)—

yad yad vibhūtimat sattvaṁ
śrīmad ūrjitam eva vā
tat tad evāvagaccha tvaṁ
mama tejo-’ṁśa-sambhavam

Translation: “‘Know that all opulent, beautiful and glorious creations spring from but a spark of My splendor.’

Purport: This is a statement made by Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavad-gītā (10.41).

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.376

atha vā bahunaitena
kiṁ jñātena tavārjuna
viṣṭabhyāham idaṁ kṛtsnam
ekāṁśena sthito jagat

Translation: “‘But what need is there, Arjuna, for all this detailed knowledge? With a single fragment of Myself I pervade and support this entire universe.’

Purport: This is also a statement made by Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavad-gītā (10.42).

Jayapatākā Swami: As Kṛṣṇa has given various persons and living entities, who have spiritual powers are known as vibhūtis of Kṛṣṇa. But  He states that what is the use of all these details, since by a fraction of His energy, all these things are manifested. He supports the entire universes.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.377

kṛṣṇa-svarūpera ṣaḍ-vidha vilāsamadhye avaśiṣṭa dvividha vayodharmi-rūpe līlā –

eita kahiluṅ śakty-āveśa-avatāra
bālya-paugaṇḍa-dharmera śunaha vicāra

Translation: “Thus I have explained specifically empowered incarnations. Now please hear about the characteristics of Lord Kṛṣṇa’s childhood, boyhood and youth.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya explained Sanātana Gosvāmī different kinds of incarnations or avatāra, now He is explaining about the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, Himself. His childhood pastimes, boyhood pastimes and youthful pastimes.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.378

svayaṁ kṛṣṇera līlā-prakaṭanera pūrve guruvargarūpa sevakagaṇera prakaṭana —

kiśora-śekhara-dharmī vrajendra-nandana
prakaṭa-līlā karibāre yabe kare mana

Translation: “As the son of Mahārāja Nanda, Lord Kṛṣṇa is by nature the paragon of kiśora [youth]. He chooses to exhibit His pastimes at that age.

Jayapatākā Swami: The different stages of Kṛṣṇa's life He exhibits different pastimes.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.379

ādau prakaṭa karāya mātā-pitā—bhakta-gaṇe
pāche prakaṭa haya janmādika-līlā-krame

Translation: “Before His personal appearance, the Lord causes some of His devotees to appear as His mother, father and intimate associates. He then appears later as if He were taking birth and growing from a baby to a child and gradually into a youth.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Kṛṣṇa actually descends from the spiritual world with His transcendental body, but He performs His pastimes so as to bewilder the atheists. He appears to be born, to be a child, and a youth. But we don’t choose who our parents are, but He sends His parents in advance and chooses who will act as His parents. So, in the rasa of the parental love, those devotees are acting as His parents, they are sent ahead to act as Kṛṣṇa’s parents.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.380

vayaso vividhatve ’pi
sarva-bhakti-rasāśrayaḥ
dharmī kiśora evātra
nitya-līlā-vilāsavān

Translation: “‘The Supreme Personality of Godhead is eternally enjoying Himself, and He is the shelter of all kinds of devotional service. Although His ages are various, His age known as kiśora [pre-youth] is best of all.’

Purport: This verse is found in the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (2.1.63).

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.381

prati-brahmāṇḍe prati-kṣaṇe sei vicitrā navanavāyamānā cinmayī līlā –

pūtanā-vadhādi yata līlā kṣaṇe kṣaṇe
saba līlā nitya prakaṭa kare anukrame

Translation: “When Lord Kṛṣṇa appears, from moment to moment He exhibits His different pastimes, beginning with the killing of Pūtanā. All these pastimes are eternally being demonstrated one after another.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Kṛṣṇa is always the Supreme Personality of Godhead, it is not that anyone by performing some austerities or meditation they can become God. Actually Kṛṣṇa is always the Supreme Personality of Godhead, although He may appear as a baby or child or youth and His pastimes are also eternal.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.382

ananta brahmāṇḍa, tāra nāhika gaṇana
kona līlā kona brahmāṇḍe haya prakaṭana

Translation: “The consecutive pastimes of Kṛṣṇa are being manifested in one of the innumerable universes moment after moment. There is no possibility of counting the universes, but in any case some pastime of the Lord is being manifested at every moment in one universe or another.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, there is a saying that the Lord’s pastimes are eternal, nitya-līlā, How is it that somehow or another these pastimes are being performed in some universe there are Ananta, millions of universes, numberless universes. This is not so wonderful that each pastime may be performed in different universes. People play the part of demons, but in the spiritual world there are no demons. Some of these pastimes are simply performed in different material universes.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.383

kṛṣṇāvatāra-līlāra dṛṣṭānta—yena niravacchinna gaṅgādhārā –

ei-mata saba līlā—yena gaṅgā-dhāra
se-se līlā prakaṭa kare vrajendra-kumāra

Translation: “Thus the Lord’s pastimes are like the flowing Ganges water. In this way all the pastimes are manifested by the son of Nanda Mahārāja.

Jayapatākā Swami: Just like Ganges River flows towards the sea, similarly Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes are manifested in some universes. So, to be part of Kṛṣṇa'sthe  pastimes is the perfection of life.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.384

kiśora kṛṣṇerai vraja-līlā –

krame bālya-paugaṇḍa-kaiśoratā-prāpti
rāsa-ādi līlā kare, kaiśore nitya-sthiti

Translation: “Lord Kṛṣṇa exhibits His pastimes of childhood, boyhood and pre-youth. When He reaches pre-youth, He continues to exist eternally to perform His rāsa dance and other pastimes.

Purport: The comparison made here is very interesting. Kṛṣṇa does not grow like an ordinary human being, even though He exhibits His pastimes of childhood, boyhood and pre-youth. When He reaches the age of pre-youth, kaiśora, He does not grow any older. He simply remains in His kaiśora age.

He is therefore described in the Brahma-saṁhitā (5.33) as nava-yauvana:

advaitam acyutam anādim ananta-rūpam
ādyaṁ purāṇa-puruṣaṁ nava-yauvanaṁ ca
vedeṣu durlabham adurlabham ātma-bhaktau
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi

This nava-yauvana, or pre-youth, is the eternal transcendental form of Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa never grows older than nava-yauvana.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, in the Pristine Chapel in Rome, God is depicted as an old man with grey hair and beard but actually Kṛṣṇa’s body is transcendental, and He never grows beyond His youthful form. So, even when He spoke the Bhagavad-gītā, He was hundred and twenty years old but He still looked like a youth of twenty years old, so Kṛṣṇa never grows old, If you are God, why would you grow old?

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Three Principal Forms of Bhagavān – 3. āveśa [+2.tad-ekātma-rūpa – b.svāṁsa (Personal Expansions) - 6. śaktyāveśa avatāra]
