Under the section: Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Instructs Sanātana Gosvāmī in the Science of the Absolute Truth

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.282

samagra jīva-śakti o prakṛtira kāraṇa-rūpe tinii anantakoṭi dhāmera mūlakartā—

samasta brahmāṇḍa-gaṇera iṅho antaryāmī
kāraṇodakaśāyī—saba jagatera svāmī

Translation: “Mahā-Viṣṇu is the Supersoul of all the universes. Lying on the Causal Ocean, He is the master of all material worlds.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since the Māha-Viṣṇu expands all the unlimited universes, He is the master of them all,  in His expansions, He is the Supersoul in all the universes, although He is lying in one place.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.283

(2) pradyumnarūpī dvitīya-puruṣāvatāra garbhodaśāyīra varṇana –

eita kahiluṅ prathama puruṣera tattva
dvitīya puruṣera ebe śunaha mahattva

Translation: “I have thus explained the truth of the first Personality of Godhead, Mahā-Viṣṇu. I shall now explain the glories of the second Personality of Godhead.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya instructed Sanātana Gosvāmī  about the glories of Māha-Viṣṇu and now He will instruct about the glories of Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.284

kāraṇodaśāyī brahmāṇḍa-saṁsthita garbhodaśāyī —

sei puruṣa ananta-koṭi brahmāṇḍa sṛjiyā
ekaika-mūrtye praveśilā bahu mūrti hañā

Translation: “After creating the total number of universes, which are unlimited, Mahā-Viṣṇu expanded Himself into unlimited forms and entered into each of them.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.285

praveśa kariyā dekhe, saba—andhakāra
rahite nāhika sthāna, karilā vicāra

Translation: “When Mahā-Viṣṇu entered each of the limitless universes, He saw that there was darkness all around and that there was no place to stay. He therefore began to consider the situation.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.286

garbhabāri prākaṭya, tathāya vaikuṇṭhe śeṣaśayyāya śayana —

nijāṅga-sveda-jale brahmāṇḍārdha bharila
sei jale śeṣa-śayyāya śayana karila

Translation: “With the perspiration produced from His own body, the Lord filled half the universe with water. He then lay down on that water, on the bed of Lord Śeṣa.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since there was no place to stay the expansion of Māha-Viṣṇu, which was in each universe produced water from His pores and filled up half of the universe and then lay down on the bed of Ananta Śeṣa, the snake.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.287

caturmukhāntaryāmī garbhodaśāyī haitei guṇāvatārera prākaṭya,—

(a) jagasraṣṭā brahmāra utpatti –

tāṅra nābhi-padma haite uṭhila eka padma
sei padme ha-ila brahmāra janma-sadma

Translation: “A lotus flower then sprouted from the lotus navel of that Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. That lotus flower became Lord Brahmā’s birthplace.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, we see ordinarily to produce a child we need a man and woman to combine together, but here Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, He simply sprouted a lotus flower from His navel and Lord Brahmā, he appeared on this lotus flower, there is no need of any woman.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.288

sei padma-nāle ha-ila caudda bhuvana
teṅho ‘brahmā’ hañā sṛṣṭi karila sṛjana

Translation: “In the stem of that lotus flower, the fourteen worlds were generated. Then He became Lord Brahmā and manifested the entire universe.

Jayapatākā Swami: The fourteen planetary systems manifested into millions of planets and luminaries in the sky, how corelating with the fourteen levels, Lord Brahmā, he did the creation of the universe and filled all the planets with living entities.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.289

(b) jagatpālaka viṣṇu-prākaṭya;

tini sattvādhiṣṭhātṛdeva haiyāo svayaṁ guṇamāyātīta—

‘viṣṇu’-rūpa hañā kare jagat pālane
guṇātīta viṣṇu—sparśa nāhi māyā-sane

Translation: “In this way, the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His form of Viṣṇu maintains the entire material world. Since He is always beyond the material qualities, the material nature cannot touch Him.

Purport: The influence of the material energy cannot touch Lord Viṣṇu as she touches Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva. Therefore it is said that Lord Viṣṇu is transcendental to the material qualities. The incarnations of the material qualities — Lord Śiva and Lord Brahmā — are under the jurisdiction of the external energy. Lord Viṣṇu, however, is different. In the mantras of the Ṛg Veda it is said, oṁ tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam (Ṛg Veda-saṁhitā 1.22.20). The words paramaṁ padam indicate that He is transcendental to the material qualities. Because Lord Viṣṇu is not within the jurisdiction of the material qualities, He is always superior to the living entities who are controlled by the material energy. This is one of the differences between the Supreme Lord and the living entities. Lord Brahmā is a very powerful living entity, and Lord Śiva is even more powerful. Therefore, Lord Śiva is not accepted as a living entity, but at the same time he is not considered to be on the level of Lord Viṣṇu.

Jayapatākā Swami: Here we understand how Lord Viṣṇu is always transcendental to material influence, how even Lord Śiva and Lord Brahmā are in somewhat in touch with  the material world, and therefore they are affected.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.290

(c) jagat-saṁhāraka rudrera utpatti–

‘rudra’-rūpa dhari kare jagat saṁhāra
sṛṣṭi, sthiti, pralaya haya icchāya yāṅhāra

Translation: “The Supreme Lord in His form of Rudra [Lord Śiva] brings about the dissolution of this material creation. In other words, only by His will are there creation, maintenance and dissolution of the whole cosmic manifestation.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, ultimately there is only Kṛṣṇa, and He expands in various forms, various energies and some are His direct expansions, and some are His energies and the living entities are minute energies and also the material energy. Lord Śiva is in between the material world and spiritual world, He is in a special category but ultimately everything come from Kṛṣṇa, but He expands in various degrees

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.291

tinaṭī guṇāvatāre trividha adhikāra-bhāra nyasta —

brahmā, viṣṇu, śiva—tāṅra guṇa-avatāra
sṛṣṭi-sthiti-pralayera tinera adhikāra

Translation: “Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva are His three incarnations of the material qualities. Creation, maintenance and destruction respectively are under the charge of these three personalities.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Brahmā sees to the creation, Viṣṇu the maintenance and Rudra, the dissolution.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.292

hiraṇyagarbha vā samaṣṭijīvera antaryāmī ei garbhodaśāyīi ṛksūktera stavanīya –

hiraṇyagarbha-antaryāmī—garbhodakaśāyī
‘sahasra-śīrṣādi’ kari’ vede yāṅre gāi

Translation: “Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, known within the universe as Hiraṇyagarbha and the antaryāmī, or Supersoul, is glorified in the Vedic hymns, beginning with the hymn that starts with the word ‘sahasra-śīrṣā.’

Jayapatākā Swami: From the Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu comes the next purusa-avatāra who maintains the universe and who enters as the Supersoul of all living entities.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.293

tinio svayaṁ māyādhīśa tattva –

ei ta’ dvitīya-puruṣa—brahmāṇḍera īśvara
māyāra ’āśraya’ haya, tabu māyā-pāra

Translation: “This second Personality of Godhead, known as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, is the master of each and every universe and the shelter of the external energy. Nonetheless, He remains beyond the touch of the external energy.

Jayapatākā Swami: The impersonalists think that the Personality of Godhead is another form of material nature, but this clearly explains how the Lord is transcendental to the material nature.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.294

(3) aniruddharūpī tṛtīya-puruṣāvatāra kṣīrodaśāyī vā guṇāvatāra viṣṇu –

tṛṭīya-puruṣa viṣṇu—‘guṇa-avatāra’
dui avatāra-bhitara gaṇanā tāṅhāra

Translation: “The third expansion of Viṣṇu is Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, who is the incarnation of the quality of goodness. He is to be counted within both types of incarnations [puruṣa-avatāras and guṇa-avatāras].

Jayapatākā Swami: Although there is one Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu in each universe, He expands into Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu and simultaneously oversees the mode of goodness and maintenance of the universe, and also acting as the Supersoul, a witness in everyone’s heart.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.295

tinii sarvabhūtastha arthāt virāṭ vā vyaṣṭijīvera antaryāmī o pālaka –

virāṭ vyaṣṭi-jīvera teṅho antaryāmī
kṣīrodakaśāyī teṅho—pālana-kartā, svāmī

Translation: “Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu is the universal form of the Lord and is the Supersoul within every living entity. He is known as Kṣīrodakaśāyī because He is the Lord who lies on the ocean of milk. He is the maintainer and master of the universe.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, He interfaces more with Lord Brahmā and the devas of the Universe, so when Lord Brahmā has a question, He goes to the edge of the Ocean of the Milk and in meditation He prays to the Lord, who give him some reply and in this way the Lord comes sometimes He descends as avatāra, or He sends His empowered representatives.
