Mukunda Datta repents for his offence.

I took rest at 3. They were supposed to wake me up at 5 but they didn’t. So that is why I am late! I thank His Holiness Bhakti Puruṣottama Svāmī for giving the class earlier.

Chapter entitled as Mukunda Datta Is Given Permission to See Mahāprabhu – Continued…

Jayapatākā Swami: Mukunda Datta, he is one of the special associates of Lord Caitanya. He was one of the kīrtana singers that would make all the devotees, cry in love of Kṛṣṇa. And he was born in the Caṭṭagrāma district of Bangladesh, along with his brother Vāsudeva Datta, who took all the sins of the fallen souls. These two brothers are very special. I saw their birthplace, and I am still hopeful that one day we will get that. After the disappearance of Lord Caitanya, they set-up their āśrama near to the house of Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi and there we have those bhajana-kutīras. We built a temple of Gaura Nitāi and Vāsudeva, Mukunda Datta. And Mukunda Datta’s original temple is still there. So that is about 300 to 400 meters from Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi’s birth place. There we have a temple, āśrama, guest house, many facilities. Rādhā Kuṇḍa, Śyāma Kuṇḍa. Every year they have special festival on Vasanta Pañcamī. Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi is the incarnation of Vṛṣabhānu Mahārāja, the father of Rādhārāṇī. He became the guru of Gadādhara. So, these are very special places. We would hope that the devotees would get an opportunity to go there sometime. We wanted to open the temple in Chittagong city, but because of this corona virus, everything is locked down. Now we have to postpone the opening. So now we are reading Mukunda Datta, how he was forbidden by Lord Caitanya, and then how he was forgiven, and now how he is repenting.

Jayapatākā Swami: “Such devotional service is so glorious, but I didn’t accept it, because of my sinful attitude. Even after unlimited births, there is no auspicious destination for me. For I will not achieve the goal, even after unlimited births.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.236

bhakti-yoge gaurī-pati hailāśaṅkara
bhakti-yoge nārada hailā muni-vara

Translation: “On the strength of devotional service Śaṅkara became the husband of Gaurī, and on the strength of devotional service Nārada became the greatest among sages.

The devotional service of Gaurī's husband is explained in the Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa, Chapter Six, as follows: When Lord Kṛṣṇa desired to give Satī as a wife to Śaṅkara, Lord Śiva spoke as follows: “O my Lord, I do not wish to have a wife. Please give me my desired benediction.... My desire for Your devotional service is increasing day and night, and I'm not satiated by chanting Your names and serving Your lotus feet. O my Lord, may I constantly sing Your most auspicious names and qualities with my five mouths as I wander about in dream or in wakefulness. Material enjoyment, yoga, and austerities do not appeal to my mind, for I wish to eagerly meditate on Your enchanting form for millions of kalpas. My happiness is uninterrupted while serving You, offering obeisances to You, and chanting Your names; but when these activities are finished, my happiness is also. O Lord, O giver of benedictions, please bestow on me the nine forms of devotional service so that I may constantly remember Your pastimes, chant and hear Your glories and qualities, meditate on Your attractive form, offer obeisances at Your lotus feet, surrender fully, and eat Your remnants.” In the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (3.28.22) it is stated:

yac-chauca-niḥsṛta-sarit-pravarodakena
tīrthena mūrdhny adhikṛtena śivaḥśivo 'bhūt
dhyātur manaḥ-śamala-śaila-nisṛṣṭa-vajraṁ
dhyāyec ciraṁ bhagavataś caraṇāravindam

“The blessed Lord Śiva becomes all the more blessed by bearing on his head the holy waters of the Ganges, which has its source in the water that washed the Lord's lotus feet.” In the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (10.63.43-44) it is stated:

ahaṁ brahmātha vibudhā
munayaś cāmalāśayāḥ
sarvātmanā prapannās tvām
ātmānaṁ preṣṭham īśvaram

taṁ tvā jagat-sthity-udayānta-hetuṁ
samaṁ prasāntaṁ suhṛd-ātma-daivam
ananyam ekaṁ jagad-ātma-ketaṁ
bhavāpavargāya bhajāma devam

“I, Lord Brahmā, the other demigods and the pure-minded sages have all surrendered wholeheartedly unto You, our dearmost Self and Lord. Let us worship You, the Supreme Lord, to be freed from material life. You are the maintainer of the universe and the cause of its creation and destruction. Equipoised and perfectly at peace, You are the true friend, Self and worshipable Lord. You are one without a second, the shelter of all the worlds and all souls.”

The devotional service of Nārada is explained in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, Canto One, Chapters Five and Six, as follows: Long ago, the great sage Nārada took birth from the womb of a maidservant, who engaged in the service of sages well-versed in the Vedic literatures. When the sages remained together at one place during the period of Cāturmāsya, she steadfastly served them and ate their remnants. As a result, the mirror of her heart was cleansed and she developed a taste for bhāgavata-dharma. Later on, when those sages were leaving for other places, they instructed her in the most confidential science of the Absolute Truth. In due course of time, after his mother left her body, Nārada gave up all hesitation for loudly chanting the Lord's names. As he traveled alone in this state through many provinces he once sat down under a tree and through meditation achieved darśana of Lord Hari. Thereafter he served saintly persons for some time, and while chanting the holy names without expecting any respect yet ready to offer all respect to others, he left his body and attained the position of Lord Hari's associate.

Jayapatākā Swami: “On the strength of devotional service, Lord Śaṅkara became the husband of Gaurī. On the strength of devotional service, Nārada became the greatest of all the munis.” When Lord Kṛṣṇa wanted to give Gaurī to be the wife of Śiva, Lord Śiva in the Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa, He prayed that I want to relish the chanting of the holy names by 5 heads. I want to engage in the 9 practices of devotional service. I am happy to do this service for millions of kalpas. I don’t have any desire for material enjoyment, for anything material. I certainly want to chant Your holy names. And if I ever finish this devotional service, My happiness will also be finished. For You are the bestower of benedictions. Please benedict me that I can always practice the nine forms of devotional service. Lord Śiva prayed, that He also wants to remember the pastimes and qualities of the Lord, His all-attractive form, and offer obeisances at His lotus feet, and eat Your remnants, mahāprasāda! Ha! Ha!

In the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (3.28.22) it is stated: “The blessed Lord Śiva becomes all the more blessed by bearing on his head the holy waters of the Ganges, which has its source in the water that washed the Lord's lotus feet.”

In the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (10.63.43-44) it is stated: “I, Lord Brahmā, the other demigods and the pure-minded sages have all surrendered wholeheartedly unto You, our dearmost Self and Lord.

That explains the service of Nārada in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam.

Translation: “After compiling many scriptures dealing with Vedic religious principles and yoga, Vyāsadeva did not feel any satisfaction at heart.

Jayapatākā Swami: “Vyāsadeva, after compiling many scriptures dealing with yoga, karma, jñāna, he did not feel any satisfaction at heart.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.238

mahā-gopya jñāne bhakti balilā saṅkṣepe

Translation: The cause of his dissatisfaction was due to the fault of describing devotional service too briefly in the course of his elaborate presentation of the most confidential knowledge.

Jayapatākā Swami: The cause of his dissatisfaction was due to his offence of just briefly explaining the glories of devotional service, in his elaborate explanation of all the other processes.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.239

nāradera vākye bhaki karilā vistāre
tabe manoduḥkha gela,—tārilā saṁsāre

Translation: On the instructions of Nārada, he elaborately described devotional service. Then his distress was vanquished and he delivered the entire world.

For a description of this topic, see Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Canto One, Chapter Four.

Jayapatākā Swami: On the instruction of Nārada Muni, his guru, he described devotional service elaborately and then his dissatisfaction went far away, and he delivered the whole world. This explanation is given in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Canto One, Chapter Four.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.240

kīṭa hai' nā māniluṅ muñi hena bhakti
āra tomā dekhibāre āche mora śakti?”

Translation: “I am an insignificant creature, for I have not accepted such devotional service. So, what power do I have to see You?”

Jayapatākā Swami: “I am an insignificant creature like a bug. I didn’t accept devotional service. Now where will I have the power to see You?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.241

manoduḥkhe mukundera krandana—

bāhu tuli' kāṅdaye mukunda mahādāsa
śarīra calaye—hena bāhe mahāśvāsa

Translation: The great servant Mukunda raised his arms and cried. He breathed so heavily that his body began to shake.

Jayapatākā Swami: Raising his hands in the air, Mukunda the great servitor, began to weep. He breathed so heavily, that his body began to shake.

So, Mukunda Datta, his prayers are so filled with bhakti. Although he is saying, I have no bhakti, and he is crying, all the devotees’ hearts would melt hearing such a presentation. So Mukunda Datta is such a great devotee, and he thinks himself totally unqualified. Maybe sometimes he associated with the Māyāvādīs. But we can see that, he repents that. We should be very careful not to associate with non-devotees, especially Māyāvādīs and impersonalists.

Thus ends the chapter “Mukunda Datta Is Given Permission to See Mahāprabhu”

Any questions?

(Bhagavad-gītā sponsorship – 81-year-old Dukhahantrī devī dāsī a disciple of HH Tamāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja, from China, sponsored 20 Bhagavad-gītās!)

Who? Dukhahantrī! Thank you Dukhahantrī devī dāsī.

Question: Dearest Please accept my respectful obeisances, when Anantadeva is an expansion of Kṛṣṇa, how is that He is not able to glorify? As His very name means unlimited. Requesting you to please help us understand, guru Mahārāja. Your insignificant servant, Lalitāṅgī Rādhā devī dāsī.

Jayapatākā Swami: Anantadeva is also known as Śeṣa. He is the last expansion of Lord Kṛṣṇa, and He is fully absorbed in devotional service. He manifests as the cloth or brāhmaṇa thread, the umbrella, all the paraphernalia of the Lord. The Lord’s paraphernalia is an expansion of Himself. Anantadeva with His thousands of hoods, He is constantly glorifying the glories and pastimes of the Lord, but He could never find the end. Because the Lord Has unlimited qualities and pastimes. Haribol!

So, during to this worldwide pandemic of COVID-19, this is like a world war, in fact more than a world war. All the planes, all the countries have been closed down, brought to their knees. Although America is spending trillions of dollars, they cannot stop this pandemic, they can only try to treat the patients. At this time, we should organize worldwide chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa. Other religions can chant their names of God, if there is any hesitation to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. But we should fill the world with transcendental sound vibration. If we fight the invisible enemy, with the invisible mantra, which can be heard but not seen, the evils of kali yuga will be dissipated. So, everyone, please encourage the political and the religious leaders of your country, to tell the people to chant the holy name of God. We recommend the Sanskrit names, Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare, Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare. Otherwise, Śrīla Prabhupāda had said that they can chant any bona fide name of God. So, thank you very much! Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Announcement: Lokapāvanī devī dāsī, from Malaysia, resident of Māyāpur has sponsored Rs. 45,000 on behalf of her father for devotee care and Food for Life in Māyāpur.
