Today we are going to read about Mukunda Datta repenting for his offence.
But first I would like to explain something about the present situation. Here in Māyāpur, and in the whole of West Bengal the government sent a notice out that until the 27th March, everybody has to stay indoors, and the only reason you to go out is to go outside is if you have to go to hospital or to buy vegetables and so on. We want devotees to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, from their varaṇḍās, from the balconies. I don’t know who has brought up today, but I want to bring up a proposal that at particular times, everybody goes out on the varaṇḍās and chants Hare Kṛṣṇa. But we cannot do harināma in the street, we cannot have people coming over to your house, government set a rule that no more than 7 people can be together and they have to stay 1 or 2 meters apart. Have to wash your hands and all that. So it is very serious. Because the number of people that were with corona virus in India was very low, it was like 105. And then it went up to 250 and I don’t know, this morning it was 415! It is growing like anything! And this is how it spread in Italy. They have like 20 or 30 thousand cases and more people died in Italy than died in China! So it is a very serious thing. We always think that we should chant, we cannot do the ordinary way. You have to do it from inside your house or your varaṇḍās, or your balconies. We cannot just go on the street and do harināma. You are lucky, if someone complains, they can arrest you and put you in jail! It is a serious thing. By making you an example they can save many lives, that is what they think. We think that the invisible enemy of the virus can be defeated by the invisible weapon of the harināma! That is a long term. But we have to follow the government rules. I know that it is difficult for some people, we want to see everybody in the temple, we want to worship the deities, but what do we do? This is not only in India; it is all over the whole world there is a lockdown. I just thought it was only Malaysia, they are locked down, UK they are locked down, America, they are locked down many states. So, in America they had hardly any cases, but now they have over ten thousand! This in a short time. Because this virus came from animals, because people eat snakes, bats, all kinds of weird creatures and then the virus went from the animals to the human beings. We have no immunity. So, it may take us a year, how many deaths before we get immunity? They say for the vaccine to be checked and tested, it may take a year or so. So what to do? We had one devotee, elderly devotee, meeting the guests in Bhakti Vedanta Manor, he got the virus through a guest and he passed away. I heard someone else passed. But generally, the devotees have been very lucky, they are very fortunate by Kṛṣṇa’s mercy. But elderly people are especially prone. Like I am a very prone person. I asked the doctor what to do if I got it? Doctor said, don’t get it. We have no cure, we have no medicine, no nothing, no therapy! I am highly susceptible because I had a liver and kidney transplant, taking immunosuppressant drugs and many other conditions. So like that some of the elderly people they are very susceptible, but even now they found that in Europe, some of the youths are also dying. So previously they thought the youths were not so much, minor things but apparently the virus has mutated into two. One of them is, 30% is the new one which is very deadly. And the other 70% is not so heavy. So what do we have to do? This is a worldwide situation. It is a pandemic. And if it continues like this for 9 months a year then it becomes endemic. So, what we are trying to do is to encourage everyone to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa from your balcony, from your varaṇḍās, stay in your house, don’t congregate, stay apart 1 meter at least, and because if one of you gets it from someone then you become a carrier. Maybe you don’t have any symptoms but after two weeks you may be a carrier. So that is why the closed the schools because if one child gets it, he comes back and his parents get it, and the neighbors get it and pretty soon the whole town, community spread. So we have to be very careful. At the same time, we want to chant, we want to read, we want to preach. So, to stay together as a community I will appreciate if everyone can come out at certain times, say 5 o clock or something, come out and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa on your varaṇḍās! Not on the street! In your house! So small groups of people keeping your distance, following the rules. Anyway, my corona virus update! Ha! There are some devotees doing harināma and they are upset they are warned not to do it! But technically the government, if they find you breaking the rules, they can arrest you. Now you have a choice - go to hospital, Indian hospital or Indian jail! Ha! Better to stay in the temple and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. So please be careful. If you don’t follow, then we get bad publicity. If the newspapers the media they see that “ISKCON devotees, they don’t follow, they don’t care.” Anyway.

Translation: On hearing the Lord’s solacing words, Mukunda cried profusely as he lamented and condemned himself.
Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the Lord’s soothing words, Mukunda entered and cried, he criticized himself, lamenting and condemned himself.

Translation: “I am so wretched that I have not accepted devotional service. Since I am devoid of devotional service, how will I become happy by seeing You?
Mukunda said, “I am an unfortunate person, devoid of the Lord’s service, therefore I have not accepted the importance of devotional service with my body, mind, and speech. Devotional service is full of bliss. I am devoid of devotional service, so how will I achieve happiness by seeing You?”
Jayapatākā Swami: “I didn’t accept devotional service; therefore, I am very wretched, and now that I realized I am devoid of all devotional service, what happiness can I receive?” So, Mukunda Datta was saying, how he was a very unfortunate person, because he was devoid of the Lord’s devotional service. He didn’t accept the importance of devotional service, with his mind, body and words. Devotional service is full of bliss, but since I am devoid of devotional service, so how will I achieve happiness by seeing You?

viśvarūpa tomāra dekhila Duryodhana
yāhā dekhibāre vede kare anveṣaṇa
Translation: “Duryodhana saw Your universal form, which some people search throughout the Vedas to see.
Duryodhana’s darśana of the universal form is described as follows: Desiring to avoid unnecessary battle, Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira sent Lord Kṛṣṇa as a messenger to Duryodhana, the head of the Kauravas, prior to the commencement of the Battle of Kurukṣetra and proposed that the kingdom be divided in half to maintain peace. Duryodhana did not agree to this proposal and conspired to arrest Lord Kṛṣṇa. As a result, Lord Kṛṣṇa became angry and said to Duryodhana, “O Duryodhana, you desire to arrest Me, considering that I am alone. But such a desire is completely foolish. Just behold, all the Pāṇḍavas, Andhakas, Vṛṣṇis, Ādityas, Rudras, Vasus, and sages are all present.” After speaking in this way, Lord Kṛṣṇa loudly laughed and the demigods, Pāṇḍavas, Andhakas, and Vṛṣṇis, who were all as effulgent as fire and resembled a thumb in size, began to appear from the body of Lord Kṛṣṇa. In this way Lord Kṛṣṇa agitated, shocked, and frightened Duryodhana by manifesting His universal form and then left the assembly. (Mahābhārata, Udyoga-parva, Chapters 130-131)
Jayapatākā Swami: Duryodhana saw Your universal form, which to see, some of the people search throughout the Vedas. The pastime was that to avoid a battle in Kurukṣetra, Yudhiṣṭhira Mahārāja sent Lord Kṛṣṇa, as a messenger to speak to Duryodhana. Yudhiṣṭhira was proposing that to avoid a battle, let there be peace on earth, divide the kingdom in half – half for the Kurus and half for the Pāṇḍavas. But Duryodhana did not agree to that proposal. And he conspired to arrest Lord Kṛṣṇa. A messenger is supposed to be respected and not arrested. So, when Duryodhana tried to arrest Lord Kṛṣṇa, thinking that now He was alone. But Kṛṣṇa said, that all the Pāṇḍavas, Andhakas, Vṛṣṇis, many others are with Him. All these great sages and different dynasties appeared from the body of Kṛṣṇa. In this way, Kṛṣṇa shocked and agitated and frightened Duryodhana, by showing His universal form. Then He left the assembly. This is described in the Mahābhārata. Still Duryodhana, he was not accepting Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Even though he saw Kṛṣṇa’s universal form.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.217
dekhiyā o savaṁśe marila Duryodhana
nā pāila sukha, bhakti-śūnyera kāraṇa
Translation: “Yet even after seeing the universal form of the Lord, Duryodhana along with his family were all killed. He did not obtain any happiness because he was devoid of devotional service.
Persons who are engrossed in material concepts consider this material world as the temporary universal form of the Lord. Although Duryodhana, who was enriched in material knowledge, saw such a universal form of the Lord, he was killed along with his family because he was cheated from seeing the actual form of the Lord. Although due to his piety Duryodhana saw the Lord within the material world created by the external energy of the Lord, since he did not see the actual form of the Lord but rather considered the Lord material, he could not become inclined towards the service of the Lord. That is why it was impossible for Duryodhana to achieve any devotional happiness. Rather, since he was averse to the service of the Lord, he was destroyed along with his family as a mark of punishment.
Jayapatākā Swami: Although Duryodhana saw the universal form, he along with his whole dynasty became distorted. He didn’t get any happiness, because he didn’t have any devotion. So, although Duryodhana saw this universal form of Lord Kṛṣṇa, because he was devoid of devotion, he didn’t really see the form of Kṛṣṇa, he didn’t understand, and therefore he was defeated. So Duryodhana, seeing the form of the Lord as material, he was not inclined to devotional service of the Lord. Though there was piety he could see the Lord, but he was not inclined to serve the Lord. So Mukunda Datta is saying that just as Duryodhana saw the Lord, but since he had no devotion, therefore he was destroyed with his dynasty, and he didn’t get any happiness seeing the Lord. So, he was comparing himself to Duryodhana.

Jayapatākā Swami: “During the Rāja-rājeśvara-Yajña, when they did abhiṣeka of You, all the kings saw Your effulgent form.” He is giving all examples, how many people saw the Lord, saw His effulgence, saw His special form, but still because they had no devotion, they couldn’t get love for Kṛṣṇa.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.222
tāhā dekhi’ mare saba narendrera gaṇa
nā pāila sukha,—bhakti-śūnyera kāraṇa
Translation: In spite of seeing Your form, all those kings were killed. They could not achieve any happiness because they were devoid of devotional service.
The kidnapping of Rukmiṇī by Lord Kṛṣṇa is described as follows: Rukmiṇīdevī, the manifestation of Lakṣmī, appeared as the daughter of Bhīṣmaka, the King of Vidarbha. She heard about the beauty and qualities of Lord Kṛṣṇa from various persons and became attached to Him within her mind. Considering Śrī Kṛṣṇa as a suitable groom, King Bhīṣmaka resolved to give Rukmiṇī to Him in charity. At that time, Rukmiṇī’s brother Rukmī, who was envious of Kṛṣṇa, forbade his father and fixed Śiśupāla as the groom. On hearing this, Rukmiṇī became extremely distressed and in order to convey her attachment for Kṛṣṇa she sent Him a letter through a reliable brāhmaṇa. She also requested that Kṛṣṇa should kidnap her before Śiśupāla comes to marry her, and she informed Him as to how that should be done. When Lord Kṛṣṇa and the brāhmaṇa arrived by chariot in the city of Vidarbha on the day before the marriage, the brāhmaṇa went to Rukmiṇī and informed her of Kṛṣṇa’s arrival and plan. When, according to family custom, Rukmiṇī went the day before marriage to visit the temple of goddess Ambikā, Lord Kṛṣṇa immediately placed her on His chariot, defeated the kings who were Śiśupāla’s well-wishers, and departed for His own abode. (Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, Tenth Canto, Chapters Fifty-three and Fifty-four)
Jayapatākā Swami: “Even though they saw Your transcendental form, all those kings, they didn’t get spiritual happiness, because they were devoid of any devotion.” This is going back to the history where Rukmiṇī hearing about the glories of Kṛṣṇa, decided that He would be a suitable match. And her father, Bhīṣmaka, had decided to give her in charity to Kṛṣṇa. But Rukmiṇī’s brother, Rukmī who was envious of Kṛṣṇa, he forbade his father and fixed Śiśupāla the demon to be her husband. On hearing this Rukmiṇī became greatly distressed and sent a letter to Kṛṣṇa through a brāhmaṇa messenger. She told Kṛṣṇa that He should kidnap her before Śiśupāla come to marry her. When Kṛṣṇa arrived, at the city of Bhīṣmaka, was the city of Vidarbha. So that brāhmaṇa messenger informed Rukmiṇī of Kṛṣṇa’s arrival plan. According to the family custom, Rukmiṇī went to see the deity of Goddess Ambikā. Kṛṣṇa immediately came and placed her on His chariot, defeating the kings who were Śiśupāla’s well-wishers, and departed for His own abode. So, this is mentioned in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10th canto chapters 53 and 54. Although the kings there, there they were defeated by Kṛṣṇa, they saw His unlimited power, but they couldn’t surrender, they couldn’t accept Kṛṣṇa because they were devoid of devotion.

dekhileka hiraṇya apūrva daraśana
nā pāila sukha, bhakti-śūnyera kāraṇa
Translation: Although Hiraṇyākṣa saw that wonderful form, he did not receive any happiness because he was devoid of devotional service.
After universal annihilation, when Lord Brahmā, with a desire to create, was absorbed in thought of how to deliver the submerged earth from the waters, the tiny form of Varāha came out of his nostril. Within a moment, that form assumed the size of a large elephant. While searching for the earth by smelling like an animal, He entered into the water and then raised the earth from Rasātala by His tusks. At that time Hiraṇyākṣa came before the Lord with a club in hand in order to stop Him, but Lord Varāhadeva easily destroyed him. (Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, Third Canto, Chapter Thirteen)
Jayapatākā Swami: Although Hiraṇyākṣa saw that wonderful form, he didn’t get any happiness because he was devoid of devotional service. So, Lord Brahmā was thinking how to deliver the earth, which had been knocked out of its orbit by the great demon Hiraṇyākṣa. Then he sneezed and a minute boar came out from his nostril, and that in a moment was as big as an elephant and grew bigger and bigger until He could enter the water of the Garbhodaka ocean and take out the earth on His tusk. Imagine how big that Boar was! But Hiraṇyākṣa seeing that, he wanted to fight with Lord Boar. He didn’t have the vision of devotion. So, seeing such a great form of the Lord, you would think that he would surrender, and somehow Lord Varāhadeva, when He hit Hiraṇyākṣa and took away his life, His hind foot touched the earth at the place in Navadvīpa-dhāma called Koladvīpa. Haribol!
And here is his brother Hiraṇyakaśipu who saw this great manifestation.

Translation: “His brother, Hiraṇyakaśipu, also saw a wonderful and most confidential manifestation of the Lord, who resides in the heart of Śrī Kamalā, Lakṣmī.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, he saw this most confidential form of the Lord, who resides in the heart of Lakṣmī devī, Śrī Kamalā. By giving all these examples of personalities who saw the Lord, but because they had no devotion, they could not be happy. So, he was repenting, lamenting, that since I have no devotion, then how will I get happiness seeing the Lord? But this is, we can see actually how much love he has for Kṛṣṇa. He is fully absorbed in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. He is remembering all the pastimes of the Lord, all the wonderful forms, and although he is saying he has no devotion, actually he is the greatest devotee! Haribol!

Any questions?
Question: From Facebook: Dear Mahārāja, PAMHO, AGTSP! Could you please describe in more details the benefits of congregational chanting online worldwide? What resources does it require, both technical and personal? Is it possible to chant 24 hours, 7 days a week, kīrtana, taking into account different time zones?
Jayapatākā Swami: Who asked the question? (Bhakti Vṛkṣa they said.) Where? I am sure that there are devotees who have the technical expertise to organize this. Apparently, Satyamedha Gaurāṅga das had arranged a worldwide kirtan, when I was being operated and so it could be done. How to do it and maintain it 24 hours, I don’t know personally the technique. But I think all the technical devotees we have should get together and workout, how we can use Zoom and social media and have kīrtana going on around the world. Good idea! Kṛṣṇa is not different from His holy name. Let us celebrate the holy name. So, there is nothing that Kṛṣṇa cannot do. If people chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, you cannot limit the potency, the possibility of anything. He can do anything He wants. So in the age of Kali, we think that just chanting the name, it is not ‘just’. The name and Kṛṣṇa are the same. So, the unlimited power of Kṛṣṇa is in His holy names. So we can take advantage of that and this will purify the whole world. More people we get to chant, more that the situation on earth would change.
Offering: A group for devotees from Mumbai, 6 devotees, sponsored 108 Bhagavad-gītās.
Where is the virtual book table? Veṇudhārī’s number – what is his number?
Question: Bengali: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahārāja. Daṇḍavat praṇāma. How can I help the Vaiṣṇavas from not getting attacked by the great destroyer corona virus? Mādhava Kānti Gaurāṅga dāsa.
Jayapatākā Swami: Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and get many people to chant. Get people to participate in online chanting and also broad the message of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. In the Kalisantaraṇa Upaniṣad, it says,
Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare
iti sodaśaka nāmnāṁ
kali-kalmaṣa nāśanam
nātaḥ parataropāyaḥ
sarva-vedeṣu dṛṣyate
By chanting these 16 names all the evils, all the problems of Kali-yuga, contaminations are destroyed. Somehow the chanting of the Lord’s names is the best thing. Also, I was saying how this virus came from the animals, so we should give up eating animals, at least for some time, give up eating meat, fish, eggs, especially meat. And then by doing this and chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, chanting the name of God, we can see a significant change. Other than that, remind devotees to keep clean and observe the rules. That slows down the pandemic, but it doesn’t in itself cure it. But chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa can change the karma of the whole world. If we have bad karma then some people are going to perish, if we change the karma, by chanting the holy names, then we will have auspicious results.
Question: Dear guru, PAMRO. (Jayapatākā Swami: Respect accepted.) AGTSP! (Jayapatākā Swami: All Glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda). Guru Mahārāja, thank you so much for your daily classes. As spirit souls, jīvera ‘svarūpa’ haya—kṛṣṇera ‘nitya-dāsa’. We are constitutionally servants of Kṛṣṇa, and other impurities in our hearts are not actually permanent parts of our identity. How then do these impurities not dissipate in the direct presence of the Lord? There are so many examples, like the ones given here, as well as the laundry man in Mathurā, who did not want to give royal clothes to Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma and even in Mahāprabhu’s time also, there were envious people. How to understand this? Thank you, Guru Mahārāja! Your servant, Nandapriyā Premā devī dāsī.
Jayapatākā Swami: Just seeing the Lord is not enough. In fact, to see a pure devotee of the Lord maybe more important, because then when one sees the Lord, they will have devotion. Devananda Paṇḍita was against the Lord but his relative Vakreśvara Paṇḍita, preached to him the glories of Lord Caitanya and therefore Devananda Paṇḍita changed his vision. So, people see the Lord, but they are blinded by the material energy, so they don’t really see the Lord, because they have no devotion. If they have devotion and they see the Lord, then they have a completely different experience. So, the point given here is that we should cultivate our devotion, just like Śrīla Prabhupāda gave the example, one time the Indian Prime Minister was Mr. Śāstrī, Now if you meet him on the street, you wouldn’t know who he is, he would be like any other Indian, so like that if you see Kṛṣṇa you don’t realize who He is. It may not have the same effect. But if you know who He is, and then you r actually see Kṛṣṇa for what He is, although He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He is coming down, He is mingling with the human beings and He has all these great qualities, it is a whole different experience. So, because these envious kings and other people saw Kṛṣṇa as an ordinary person, although they saw him, they could not appreciate. The Pāṇḍavas and others who saw the Lord, they appreciated Him and loved Him. So, we should cultivate devotion. Otherwise, seeing the Lord is – why doesn’t Kṛṣṇa show Himself to us? We are not ready yet. If we have devotion for the Lord then He will reveal Himself, and we will appreciate it. Did you understand what I said? Today I have a sore throat.
Today I gave a class, mid-day to the Malaysians. It was very nice to see the devotees there, the Kṛṣṇa conscious devotees. Before that I went to a MAC meeting. We discussed about this situation. Before that I had a meeting on the TOVP Exhibits. So, my voice is fading, as it is the fourth class today. I don’t know if I am understood or not (Śyāmarasika dāsa said it is clear Guru Mahārāja, but you need to take rest.)
Question: Thank you Mahārāja. Gadādhara Paṇḍita has so strong faith in Mahāprabhu, He is Rādhārāṇī Herself. I am not Her and have never seen Mahāprabhu. So, I don’t have strong faith in Him. But I have strong faith with Śrīla Prabhupāda. Is the result the same? Rajendra dāsa, China devotee in Māyāpur.
Jayapatākā Swami: If you have faith in Śrīla Prabhupada, and he had faith in Lord Caitanya and Kṛṣṇa. Then naturally we should have faith in Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupada said that he tried to follow his spiritual master, every word. Word by word. And therefore when he said to preach in the West, he went to the West. He was given the order to spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness, all over the world, he did that. And printing books, like establishing a Governing Body Commission, so if we have faith in Śrīla Prabhupada, they we should have faith in the things that he taught us. He taught us that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He is Bhagavan, we should believe that! Then the result will be the same. Kṛṣṇa will be very pleased that you are taking shelter of His devotee.
Submission: Hare Kṛṣṇa Gurudeva. PAMRO (Guru Mahārāja; Accepted). I am very indebted to you, one year ago on this day, you initiated me. Please bless me that I can follow my initiation vows and serve you better, all my life. Your servant, Antaraṅga Tulasī devī dāsī.
Jayapatākā Swami: Gestured with his hands.
Submission: Jaya Śrīla Gurudeva, PAMRO, Last year on this day, you gave me my spiritual birth and gave me my spiritual identity as Rajeśvara Madhusūdhana dāsa. Even though I know how fallen and undeserving I am, you have showed your limitless mercy and kindly accepted this fallen soul, under the shelter of your lotus feet. I have no words to thank you or express my gratitude to you. Oh, my spiritual father, I just pray to you that you please bless me that I can be eligible to serve and assist you in the mission of Śrīla Prabhupāda!
Jayapatākā Swami: I pray every day when I go before the deities, for my disciples and others. So, this prayer that you can help me in serving Śrīla Prabhupāda’s mission, I think that is part of my prayer!
Guru Mahārāja’s virtual book table number is 9434760402 – you can place order, and Guru Mahārāja will sign the books.
This number is a What’s app number +91 9434760402.
Thank you all!
So, I gave two videos in Bengali and English. One is Spanish. So one is for the devotees, and one is for the non-devotees. So you can see those and listen to those and then we could have some videos in Chinese or Russian. And if you like to say something in Bengali, also, Tamil translation. Alright!
