Introduction: So today we are having the Kṛṣṇa Caitanya compilation class, and yesterday we had the Balarāma Pūrṇimā. So I am very happy, now we are in the new month, and we hope that all the devotees are healthy and enthusiastic in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Now the Lord has decided to take sannyāsa. He had first talked with Lord Nityānanda, that was yesterday. We get to learn a lot about the Personality of Godhead, and His different activities. Since Lord Nityānanda could not dissuade Him, that He understood, the Lord was independent, and that He would do whatever He wanted. So, He didn’t even try to convince Him otherwise, once He realized that He was determined to do so. So, what to speak of us? When Lord Nityānanda could not convince the Lord, then who are we? So, we can see that of course, that’s why we pray to Kṛṣṇa, if it so please Him, because ultimately whatever He wants, that will happen. So, this is very interesting in this Caitanya-līlā, we get a very close look at the Personality of Godhead. People want to know the science of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. But through this bhakti-yoga we can learn more about the Personality of Godhead, than any other yoga. So, we can see how the Lord is one without a second, and He is very lovable. So, it’s not so difficult, it is very natural for us to love Kṛṣṇa. But we don’t love Kṛṣṇa, due to our poor fund of knowledge. But by studying the character of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, we understand more about the Supreme Personality of Godhead, about His energies and about the various truths connected with Him, so this chapter is entitled:

The Lord Consoles Śrīvāsa, Mukunda, Murāri and Gadādhara

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 11.44: Hearing himself praised, the Lord was doubly afflicted and cried even more. In great trepidation, the sannyāsī again spoke. “You are Lord Viṣṇu. I know this.” Hearing this, the Lord desired to take sannyāsa.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.80

iṅgita-ākāre tāhā bujhilā mukunda
prabhu rākhibāre kare prakāra-pravandha

Jayapatākā Swami: Mukunda Datta, by seeing the various hints and His body language, he understood what Lord Gaurāṅga had decided, Mukunda Datta tried to stop Him.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 11.45: Mukunda then said, “Look at the Lord with unblinking eyes constantly, as long as he is here and does not leave.” The Lord said to Śrīvāsa and the others, “Because of prema, I will wander everywhere constantly, going from here.”

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.17: Then Mukunda Datta announced to the Vaiṣṇavas, “Noble twice-born men! For as long as He remains here, look to your full satisfaction upon Śrī Nātha, the source of this cosmic manifestation.”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.81

āilena-yathā āche saba bhaktagaṇa
kam̐diyā kahila saba bhaktera caraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: All the devotees came at that place, and Mukunda Datta, crying, weeping, he placed these words at the devotees’ lotus feet:

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.82

śuna śuna sabajana āmāra uttara
sannyāsa kariba ei prabhu viśvambhara

Jayapatākā Swami: Listen, listen, all you devotees, please hear my words. Lord Viśvambhara will certainly take sannyāsa.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.83

yāvata thākaye-dekha nayana bhariyā
śrīmukhera kathā śuna śravaṇa pūriyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Let your eyes be filled seeing Him, as long as He is here. Listen to the words, from His śrīmukha, His auspicious mouth, and fill up your ears with His divine sound.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.18: “After a short time the jagad-guru will give up His home and depart.” When they heard this statement from that discerning person, the hearts of all the Gaura-bhaktas became very agitated.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.84

chāḍiyā yāiba prabhu nija gṛhavāsa
jananī chāḍiba āra nija sara dāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga will give up and leave His own household. He will leave His mother, and His personal associates.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.85

e bola śuniñā sabe vyathita-hiyāya
yukati kariyā mane cintaye upāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing these words, everyone became sorrowful at heart. They were thinking some plan, by which the Lord would stay amongst them.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.86

svatantra īśvara nā rahiba kāru vase
ihā bali bhakta saba paḍilā tarāse

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord is independent; He will not stay under the control of anyone. Saying these words, all the devotees fell down on the ground.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.87

bhūmite paḍiyā kānde—dhūlāya dhūsara
prāṇanātha āre mora prabhu viśvambhara

Jayapatākā Swami: Falling to the ground, they wept covered with dust. They called out, “O master of our lives, Oh my Lord, Viśvambhara!”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.88

hā hā mahāprabhu kothā yāibe eḍiyā
mo-sabhāre kalisarpe khāibe dhariyā

Jayapatākā Swami: “Oh! Oh! Lord Mahāprabhu! Where will You go? The black snake of Kali-yuga, will grab and devour all of us.”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.89

kali-bhaye tora prabhu lainu śaraṇa
tora bhaye kalisarpe nā laṅegha ekhana

Jayapatākā Swami: Being afraid of Kali-yuga, Lord Gaurāṅga, we have taken Your shelter. The snake of Kali being fearful of You will not attack us, in Your presence.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.90

henakāle āsi tathā prabhu viśvambhara
śrīvāsa paṇḍita dekhi kahila uttara

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time, Lord Viśvambhara came there, when He saw Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita, the Lord said in response:

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.91

śuna śuna ohe dvija priya śrīnivāsa
eka kathā kahi-yadi nā pāo tarāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: “Please hear Me, hear, Oh dear brāhmaṇa, Śrīvāsa, I will tell you something, if you are not afraid to hear My words.”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.92

prema-upārjane āmi yāra deśāntara
to-sabhāre āni diba-śuna dvijavara

Jayapatākā Swami: To find pure ecstatic love, spiritual love, I will go to another country. My dear brāhmaṇa, listen, I will bring You back this pure love, and give to all of you.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.19: Then the Lord spoke to Śrīvāsa, the bull among the twice-born, “For your love, I will leave for another country.”

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.20-21: In the same way that gentlemen board a boat and journey to another country, later bringing wealth back for their friends, so shall I...

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.21: ...bring from a foreign country an abundance of love and give you all, so that you may fully behold Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the worshipable Deity of all gods.”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.93

sādhū yena naukā caḍi yāya dūradeśa
dhana-upārjana-lāgi kare nānā kleśa

Jayapatākā Swami: As a pious man climbs on a boat, travels to distant lands, in order to earn wealth, he encounters, endures many difficulties.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.94

āniñā bāndhabagaṇe karaye poṣaṇa
āmiha aichana āni diba premadhana

Jayapatākā Swami: And that person, returns home and with his wealth, he maintains his kinsmen and friends. In the same way, I will bring you back the treasure of spiritual love and give to you.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.22: After listening to the words of Śrī Hari, Śrīvāsa replied to, “He Nātha! How can I live in Your separation?”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.95

e bola śuniñā kahe śrīvāsa paṇḍita
tomā nā dekhiyā prabhu ki kāja jīvita

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing these words, Śrīvāsa Prabhu replied, “My dear Gaurāṅga, if we don’t see You, what is the use of our remaining alive?”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.96

jīvita śarīre bandhu karaye poṣaṇa
dehāntare kari tāra śrāddha-tarpaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: One can maintain his kinsmen if they stay alive. If they leave their bodies, all you can do is offer them tarpaṇa and śraddha. Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura is telling Lord Caitanya, that without His association, all the devotees of Navadvīpa will certainly leave their bodies. So, Lord Caitanya cannot return and give them love, because all of them will be dead, out of separation from the Lord.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.97

ye jīye—tāhāre tumi dio premadhana
tomā nā dekhile habe sabhāra maraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: If we remain alive, and then You can give us the treasure of pure spiritual love. But if we cannot see You, we will certainly die.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.23: Hearing this, Bhagavān said, “O best of the vipras, I will reside eternally within your temple. Do not be surprised in your mind.”

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 11.46: Again, Śrīvāsa spoke in fear. “How can I remain in separation from you? O Lord! My mind will constantly burn up.” The Lord said, “I will stay in your house.” Immediately Śrīvāsa’s mind became peaceful.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.24: Hearing these words from Gaura Hari, that best of the twice-born felt baffled, and he thought, “He is the all-pervasive Supreme Lord. Who is capable of controlling him?”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.157

prabhura mukunda-gṛhe gamana o kīrtanānte mukunda-samīpe nijābhilāṣa jñāpana—

mukundera vāsāya āilā gauracandra
dekhiyā mukunda hailā parama ānanda

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gauracandra went to the home of Mukunda Datta. When Mukunda saw the Lord Viśvambhara, he felt great spiritual ecstasy.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.158

prabhu bale,—“gāo kichu kṛṣṇera maṅgala”
mukunda gāyena, prabhu śuniyā vihvala

Jayapatākā Swami:Lord Gaurāṅga said, sing something about the auspicious glories of Lord Kṛṣṇa. When Mukunda sang, Lord Gaurāṅga became overwhelmed in ecstasy listening to Him sing.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.159

‘bola bola’ huṅkāra karaye dvijamaṇi
puṇyavanta mukundera śuni' divya-dhvani

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga, the jewel of the twice-born, hearing the pious Mukunda’s melodious singing, Lord Gaurāṅga roared loudly, “Chant! Chant! Sing! Sing!”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.160

kṣaṇeke karilā prabhu bhāva samvaraṇa
mukundera saṅge tabe kahena kathana

Jayapatākā Swami: After a while Lord Gaurāṅga controlled His ecstasies and began to speak with Mukunda.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.161

prabhu bale,—“mukunda, śunaha kichu kathā
bāhira haiba āmi, nā rahiba hethā

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga said, “O Mukunda, please listen to me. I will not stay here. I will leave home.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.162

gārihasta āmi chāḍibāṅa suniścita
śikhā-sūtra chāḍiyā caliba ye-te-bhita”

Jayapatākā Swami: Certainly, I will leave household life, I will shave My head and give up My brāhmaṇa thread and go where I please.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura:The karmī and jñānī, sannyāsīs abandon material enjoyment and give up their śikhā and brāhmaṇa thread for the sake of renunciation. Śrī Caitanyadeva's renunciation of His śikhā was meant to prove a point to the Māyāvādī jñānīs. The tridaṇḍi-sannyāsīs engage their śikhā and brāhmaṇa threads in the service of the Supreme Lord. That is why they keep their śikhā and brāhmaṇa threads while accepting “tridaṇḍa-sannyāsa” according to the Madhva-Gauḍīya line. Following in the footsteps of the Madhva-Gauḍīya line, Tridaṇḍi Bhikṣu Śrī Prabodhānanda Sarasvatī, who belonged to the Śrī-sampradāya, also kept his śikhā and brāhmaṇa thread. Vallabhācārya, who belonged to the Śrī Gadādhara branch, preserved his śikhā and brāhmaṇa thread at the time of accepting tridaṇḍa-sannyāsa. Śrī Viṣṇusvāmī, Śrī Rāmānuja, and Śrī Nimbāditya were all sannyāsīs with śikhās and brāhmaṇa threads. In the Madhva-sampradāya, only the Tīrthas have even today the provision to give up their śikhās and brāhmaṇa threads. In the Madhva-Gauḍīya line, the vraja-vāsī Six Gosvāmīs accepted tridaṇḍa-sannyāsa based on Śrī Upadeśāmṛta, and according to the principles of paramahaṁsas some of them did not even wear saffron cloth. Therefore, it is to be understood that they were paramahaṁsas. This does not mean that tridaṇḍa-sannyāsīs aspiring to progress should give up saffron cloth. Their spiritual masters, however, may not need to wear saffron cloth. Retaining saffron cloth does not disturb the principles of a paramahaṁsa. Those paramahaṁsas with śikhās and brāhmaṇa threads who traverse the paramahaṁsa path under the shelter of Śrī Gauracandra do not give up their śikhās and brāhmaṇa threads—this is known as “Śrī Caitanyadeva's śikṣā.” [Even today it is the practice in Bengal to call the śikhā, or tuft of hair on the head of devotees, “Śrī Caitanya's śikhā,” and śikhā is a corrupted form of the word śikṣā, which means “teaching]

Jayapatākā Swami: So although Lord Caitanya said, He would give up His śikhā and brāhmaṇa thread. This was the system practiced by the ekadaṇḍi sannyāsīs. But the tridaṇḍi sannyāsīs in the line of Caitanya Mahāprabhu, would keep their śikhā, a tuft of hair at the back of their heads, and their brāhmaṇa threads. And practice devotional service. So, apparently there are different tridaṇḍi sannyāsīs, in different paramparāās. They also follow the system, by keeping their śikhā and brāhmaṇa thread, engaging in this bhakti-yoga service.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.163

prabhura sannyāsa vārtā-śravaṇe mukundera duḥkha—

śrī-śikhāra antardhāna śuniyā mukunda
paḍila virahe, saba ghucila ānanda

Jayapatākā Swami: When he heard that the Lord would shave His head, Mukunda Datta fell into separation, and lost all sense of spiritual happiness.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.98

mukunda kahaẏe-prabhu poḍaye śarīra
antare poḍaye prāṇa nā haẏa bāhira

Jayapatākā Swami: Mukunda Datta said to Lord Gaurāṅga, my body is burning. Although flames burn inside my heart, my life air does not come out.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.99

morā saba adhama duranta durācāra
tumi śaṭha khalamati-bujhila vebhāra

Jayapatākā Swami: I may be a fallen, wretched sinner, misbehaved person. But I have understood Your behavior, You are a crooked-hearted cheater.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.100

acatura-gaṇa morā nā bujhiyā tore
śaraṇa lainu sarva chāḍiyā saṃsāre

Jayapatākā Swami: Foolish people like myself, did not understand Your true nature. We took shelter of Your lotus feet and renounced the material world.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.101

dharma karma chāḍi tora pada kailum̐ sāre
patita kariyā kene chāḍa mo-sabhāre

Jayapatākā Swami: Renouncing the religious rituals and duties, we took the shelter of Your lotus feet. Making us fallen, why do You leave all of us?

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.102

patita-pāvana tumi śāstrete jāniñā
śaraṇa lai sarva dharmere chāḍiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: All the scriptures glorify You. That You are the uplifter of the fallen, that’s why we surrendered to Your lotus feet, giving up all other religious principles.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.103

ekhane chāḍiyā yāha mo-sabhāre tumi!
e nahe ucita prabhū-nivedila āmi

Jayapatākā Swami: Now, You will renounce all of us and go away. Lord Gaurāṅga, this is not proper. O Lord, I place this appeal before You.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.104

khala-mati nā bujhiyā lailu śaraṇa
bajara-antara tora hṛdaya kaṭhina

Jayapatākā Swami: Not understanding Your crooked nature, we took shelter of Your lotus feet. Inside, Your heart is very hard. It is like a thunderbolt.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.105

bāhire kamala-rasa sugandhi pāiyā
antareha ei mata—chila mora hiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Outside, we smell the fragrance of a lotus flower. I thought that Your inside was of the same nature. So just like when Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma left the vraja-vāsis, they were like completely absorbed in separation. So now, the navadvīpa-vāsis, the associates of the Lord are feeling the same spiritual sorrow.

We will continue reading more tomorrow. Hare Kṛṣṇa!

This is a very tough pastime to hear. All the devotees of Navadvīpa were like the vraja-vāsis, when Kṛṣṇa left to Mathurā. When He is leaving to take sannyāsa, they are feeling great separation.
